Anno 1827. III a XII. Location/localizacao: 3-A4-B-36

Journal of an Officer in the King's German Legion:

London: Henry Colburn,, 1827. comprising an Account of his Campaigns and Adventures in England, Ireland, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, Malta, Sicily, and Italy. Octavo (190 × 115 mm) Slightly later half calf on brown cloth boards by Carss and Co. of Glasgow, black morocco label. A little rubbed, bookplate of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders to the front pastedown, hinges a touch cracked, light toning, about very good. First edition in English, first published in German in Hanover the year previously. Hering was a surgeon with the KGL. He joined up when the French occupied Hanover in 1803, "leaving his homeland clandestinely and joining the newly-formed King's German Legion in England. Hering's account of how in August 1804 he made his way northwards via Gottingen, Hanover city and Hamburg to the small North Sea port of Husum conveys the impression that he was a young man leaving home for the first time. His experiences as an army-surgeon between 1804 and 1816 (when he returned to Germany) is the subject [of the journal], which also contains a short history of the German Legion. After spending eighteen months in England he was posted to Ireland, where he lived from April 1806 till June 1807. Later he went to Denmark, Portugal, Spain, Malta, Sicily and Italy. His accounts of all these places similarly deserve notice. About his life after retirement from the army he is silent. Hering died at Gottingen on 10 November 1832. As historical evidence Hering's narrative is of good quality. It was based on a series of letters written by him while serving abroad to a relative in Germany which on his return he found to be 'a complete journal of my twelve years' service.' [It] is therefore not a memoir but a contemporary record of events. As a medical man he had long periods of leisure and was better disposed than most to consider the world objectively" (Wood, Select Documents XLI, Irish Historical Studies, Vol. 25, No.99, 1987). Uncommon.

[Mexico City]. 1827.. [2],16,11,8,18,44,14,14,[2],9-24,[1]pp. plus four folding charts. Small quarto. Contemporary plain paper wrappers, manuscript title on spine. Wrappers lightly chipped and soiled. Minor dampstaining to several leaves. Very good. In a half morocco box. One of the most important documents in California history - the result of the two- year study by the official "Committee for the Development of the Californias." First edition, scarce complete with eight parts. "Covers the ambitious grand strategy of the Junta de Fomento de Californias looking to California colonization and the establishing at Monterey of a commercial capital to dominate the whole Pacific trade" - Howes. The growing Anglo-Saxon population on the Columbia River prompted Mexico to form this Junta. Interestingly, the folding plans advocate a grid layout for land distribution, a very Anglo - rather than Spanish - concept. The pamphlets each have their own titlepage and pagination, and comprise: replies to specific questions as to the extent of the Russian and Anglo-American activity and Mexico's own establishment there; a plan for the administration of the California missions; a plan for opening California to foreigners to encourage colonization there, including a diagram for surveying grants of land (this was the basis for the California land grant laws that remained in effect until the end of Mexican power in California); a similar plan for subsidized colonization by Mexican nationals; a proposed general system of laws for the better government of California; a plan for the province's rapid mercantile development; a proposed project for establishing direct trade between Monterey and the Pacific, as well as with the United States and British trade in those regions; proposed articles for a private "Compania Asiatico- Mexicana" to implement the above. Though not made directly into law, the Junta's plans served as a primary document from which the laws of California were drawn. BANCROFT, CALIFORNIA III:3-6, 21-23. BARRETT 1355. COWAN I, pp.124-36. Pappa Flesh. "Pappa Flesh. Late minister of War in the Greek Government

Philhellenic: London & Paris " now in course of A Friedal, sold by the principal Book & Printsellers in Town & Country." 1827. Coloured lithograph portrait of Papaflessas from the fourth edtion of Friedals "Series of Greek Portraits (4th part)" verso blank. Original old colour. Printed signature in Greek. Text in English and French. Portrait of Papaflessas in helmet with full background. Georgios Dimitrios Flessas ,1788–1825. From an early age Papaflesss came in to conflict with the Ottoman Turks, and was active in trying to raise resistence against them. Papaflessas traveled to several areas seeking support for a revolution against the Ottoman Empire. At Kalamata on March 21 1821 where he had arranged armed men around the city following the arrest of leading Greeks and clergy a Turkish sympathizer tried to leave the city and was killed, starting the war of Independence on March 21, 1821. In Mani a gathering of the captains of the rebels had decided to start the revolution on March 25, 1821, but received news on the 22nd that the fighting had already begun. The Greek War of Independence officially started on March 25, 1821. 1823, Papaflessas was named the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Chief of Police by the government of Prince Alexander Mavrocordato under the name Gregorios Dikaios, the name he had when was in Filiki Etairia. When Ibrahim Pasha invaded the Peloponnese in 1825 Realizing the great danger the nation was facing with the Ibrahim's invasion, he demanded the government grant amnesty to Kolokotronis and other political prisoners. This demand was refused and he appeared before the Executive Branch and Parliament to tell them he would go to Messinia alone to organize a resistance against Ibrahim, determined to return victorious or die in the battlefield. Papaflessas gathered 3,000 poorly armed men and went to the province of Pylia, Messinia, searching for the best spot to face Ibrahim's army coming out of the city of Pylos. He selected the hills of Maniaki in order for him to have a better view of the enemy's movements and there Papaflessas established three lines of defence. On June 1, 1825, Ibrahim's forces led by well-trained French officers attacked Papaflessas' defence lines. Most of the Greek troops lost their nerve, abandoned their positions, and fled. Papaflessas continued to fight the Egyptians with a small force of 800-1000 men loyal to him and his cause. Papaflessas knew that in choosing to face Ibrahim he would die on the battlefield. Papaflessas's defenses were ultimately broken by the heavy bombardment of Ibrahim's artillery and the repeated attacks of his infantry and cavalry. Fierce hand-to-hand fighting ended with the death of the last defender. After Papaflessa's death from a bullet in the chest, Ibrahim ordered that his body be cleaned of blood and dirt and tied to a tree. After a few minutes of looking at his foe, Ibrahim walked up to the corpse and kissed it on the cheek as a sign of extreme respect. In speaking of Papaflessas after his death, it is said that Ibrahim told his officers: "If Greece had ten heroes like him, it would not have been possible for me to undertake the military campaign against the Peloponnese". Brightly colour, margins evenly toned with light spotting. Adam [de] Friedal, there is much confusion about Friedal's origins, He is supposed to be a Danish Phihellene and apparently passed himself off as a Baron. St Clair tells us that Friedal carried a lithographic press on his back whilst in Greece where he seems to have been between 1821-24.. He was at Missolonghi for a while with Lord Byron and married the sister of one of Byron's artificers, John Hodges. Byron wrote a letter introducing Friedal to the notice of the London Greek Commitee. Friedal returned and settled in London and produced his first portrait of Mavrocordato dated September 1824. "The Greeks. Twenty-four Portraits (In Four Parts Of Six Portraits Each,) of the Principal Leaders and Personages Who Have Made Themseves Most Conspicuous in the Greek Revolution.." 1st edition 1824. thereafter there are a number of editions, with differences to the portraits. The portraits in the 1st Edition, probably after Friedal's original drawings are fairly primitive, with each new edition they became more refined. A second edition of the first 2 parts was issued in 1826. Some of these plates are marked 'second edition', others merely have anew date on the plate surface. In most cases a completely new portrait replaces that of the previous ediion; parts 3 & 4 are unchanged. In 1827 two editions appeared with the imprint "London and Paris, 1827", some on India paper. one in which the portraits had no, or a very simple background, the other with full complex backgrounds. A French edition appeared the same year. In 1828-9 Dean & Munday brought out another series of Friedal plates, some but not all marked 'fourth edition', their most distinguishing feature being that they are full length. They re- issued a number of plates in 1830, marked fifth and sixth edition. There exist wrappers for a 'sixth edition 'appearing in 1832. [Navari]. Atlas Universel de GÈographie

Brussels,: Lithographed by H. Ode, 1827.. Physique, Politique, Statistique et MinÈralogique... SixiËme Partie - OcÈanique.Portfolio, comprising letterpress title-page, key map of the region and 60 numbered lithographic maps measuring 530 x 685 mm.; a fine set with expert contemporary handcolouring, preserved in a contemporary folding case of half diced russia with marbled boards and gilt lettering. A milestone of modern scientific cartography: this is the final volume, comprising Australia, New Zealand and Oceania, of the pioneering large scale atlas produced by Philippe Vandermaelen, founder of the Etablissement GÈographique in Brussels. The atlas is remarkable on several counts, not least its extraordinary scale of 26 miles to the inch. For the first time remote and inaccessible areas of the globe were mapped on a generous uniform scale, reflecting the objective spirit of scientific cartography then superseding the Eurocentric models of the eighteenth century. The atlas was printed lithographically, being the happy outcome of a fruitful collaboration between Vandermaelen and master lithographer Henri Ode.Perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of the atlas was its potential to be formed into an enormous globe with a diameter exceeding seven meters. Indeed, one complete globe was assembled for public display at the Etablissement GÈographique in Brussels. The attention to detail - and considerable challenges posed by the lithographic process - are evident in this volume dedicated to Australia and the Pacific. Although some areas remain uncharted, the sixty maps here included reflect a fastidious collation of information from myriad voyage accounts.Koeman, III, Vdm.I; Phillips, Atlases, 749; Sabin, 43762.

        Battle of Navarin."

Philhellenic: London " Engraved by Robert William Smart, and Henry Pyall, after drawings made by Sir John Theophilus Lee under the immediate inspection of Capt. Lord Vis. Inglesre"..Printed by: I Fisher. c1830. Pair of aquatints in blue and black of the Battle of Navarino by John Theophilus Lee, Second editions with new dedication : "To His Gracious Majesty King William the Fourth, late Lord High Admiral of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland." [The !st edition was to William as Duke of Clarence.] With text below describing the battle in English and French. One view shows the Combined fleet in the foreground firing on the Turkish line to the rear . Coat of arms below within the text ; marked "Proof copy". The second view, after the action shows the Asia in the centre and the Turkish Admiral's ship and much of the Turkish line in flames or destroyed, sailors being rescued in the foreground. List of the Combined fleet's ships and fire power below. Laid on board; some spotting to sky and blank margins. The Battle Of Navarino was fought off the west coast of the Peloponnesus on October 20th 1827 and effectively ended Turkish resistance to Greek independence with the destruction of the Turkish-Egyptian fleet by the British- Russian- French fleet under Vice Admiral Sir Edward Codrington, hero of Trafalgar. The news of Navarino made Codrington a hero twice over in the eyes of the general British public. But in Whitehall, senior naval and diplomatic echelons were appalled by the outcome of his campaign. It was considered that Codrington had grossly exceeded his instructions by provoking a showdown with the Ottoman fleetInitially, official disapproval of Codrington had to be restrained because of the admiral's huge popularity with the public. The Admiralty's revenge took petty form, such as its refusal, despite repeated requests by Codrington, to pay his crews their traditional prize-money from the sale of captured Ottoman treasure and goods. Meanwhile, Wellington was biding his time until he felt it was politically safe to remove Codrington from the Mediterranean theatre. Finally, in June 1828, the Admiralty announced that Codrington was being relieved of his command (although he remained in acting-command until his replacement arrived in August). Although the King felt obliged by public opinion to grant Codrington the high honour of the Grand Cross of the Bath, the Admiralty's failure to give him another operational command in his remaining decade of service or to promote him to full Admiral until shortly before his retirement from the Navy in 1837, were eloquent testimony to his fall from favour. John Theophilus Lee 1787-1843. Lee joined the Royal Navy in 1796 at the age of 9. He saw action at the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797 and then the Battle of the Nile the following year, as a midshipman aboard HMS Swiftsure. He passed for Lieutenant in 1806 and married in 1807. Lee then resigned from the Navy in 1809 and became a civilian attached to the Admiralty as head of the personnel department. Subsequently knighted, Lee retired to Bedhampton, where he wrote a book: Memoirs of the life and services of Sir J Theophilus Lee, of The Elms, Hampshire. He died in Torquay in 1843. Lee's professional painting career started at the Portsmouth Naval Academy from 1800-1803, where several of his drawings were used for engravings appearing in the Naval Chronicle. These included views of Alexandria, the Naval Academy, and the Greenwich Asylum. The Naval Chronicle also printed an engraving after JT Lee of a scene of the aftermath of the Battle of Trafalgar. William IV (William Henry; 21 August 1765 – 20 June 1837) was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of Hanover from 26 June 1830 until his death. William, the third son of George III and younger brother and successor to George IV, was the last king and penultimate monarch of Britain's House of Hanover. He served in the Royal Navy in his youth and was, both during his reign and afterwards, nicknamed the "Sailor King". He served in North America and the Caribbean, but saw little actual fighting. Since his two older brothers died without leaving legitimate issue, he inherited the throne when he was 64 years old. In 1827 George Canning, the Prime Minister, appointed William, Duke of Clarence, and Heir Presumptive, to the office of Lord High Admiral, which had been in commission (that is, exercised by a board rather than by a single individual) since 1709. While in office, the Duke had repeated conflicts with his Council, which was composed of Admiralty officers. Things finally came to a head in 1828 when the Lord High Admiral put to sea with a squadron of ships, leaving no word of where they were going, and remaining away for ten days. The King, through the Prime Minister, by now Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, requested his resignation; the Duke of Clarence complied. Despite the difficulties the Duke experienced, he did considerable good as Lord High Admiral. He abolished the cat o' nine tails for most offences other than mutiny, attempted to improve the standard of naval gunnery and required regular reports of the condition and preparedness of each ship. He commissioned the first steam warship and advocated more. Philhellenic Battle of Navarino

A good copy. ----

Norman 50; Honeyman sale 135; DSB I, p.145. FIRST EDITION. "AMPERE'S GREATEST WORK" (DSB). "Having established a noumenal foundation for electrodynamic phenomena, Ampère's next steps were to discover the relationships between the phenomena and to devise a theory from which these relationships could be mathematically deduced. This double task was undertaken in the years 1821-1825, and his success was reported in his greatest work, the Mémoire sur la théorie mathématique des phénomènes électrodynamiques, uniquement déduite de l'expérience (1827). In this work, the PRINCIPIA OF ELECTRODYNAMICS, Ampère first described the laws of action of electric currents, which he had discovered from four extremely ingenious experiments. The measurement of electrodynamic forces was very difficult, although it could be done, as J.-B. Riot and Felix Savart had shown in their formulation of the Biot-Savart law. Ampère realized, however, that much greater accuracy could be achieved if the experiments could be null experiments, in which the forces involved were in equilibrium." (DSB I p. 145). "This volume was not published until 1827." (Honeyman, 135). - Also present in this volume of the Mémoire is an important work by NAVIER "Mémoire sur les lois du mouvement des fluids." (Roberts & Trent, p. 2). This classic paper on fluid mechanics, contains his calculations about fluid flow and gives his equations for motion of a viscous fluid. Also discovered by Stokes, these calculations are known today as the Navier-Stokes Equations. Navier analyzed the motion of a fluid in much the same fashion as Euler, but considered in addition a hypothetical attraction or repulsion between adjacent molecules. - "Poisson's "Mémoire sur la théorie du magnétisme en mouvement" concerns attractive force and formulates new equations for the solution of problems therein. This work influenced the researches of Green (1828) and Gauss (1829). Also in this volume is his "Mémoire sur le calcul numerique des integrals définies" in which he sets out to improve the method of quadratures ... "The following memoirs are also of interest: Legendre's "Recherches sur quelques objets d'analyse indéterminée et particulièrement sur le théoreme de Fermat"; 'Laplace's "Mémoires sur le développement de l'anomalie vraie et du rayon vecteur elliptique, en séries ordonnées suivant les puissances de l'excentricité;" as well as Cauchy's "Mémoire sur les développements des fonctions en séries périodiques"...
