Broadside; Murder; Rawlin, Stephen; Hardy, Thomas
1825. Not Recorded by OCLC or COPAC [Broadside]. [Murder]. Rawlin, Stephen. Hardy, Thomas. A True and Particular Account of a Shocking Murder, Committed on the Body of William Richardson, with an Iron Poker, by Two Pitmen Named Stephen Rawlin and Thomas Hardy, At Bishop Auckland, on Saturday September the 24th, 1825. Gateshead: W. Stephenson, Printer, 1825. 13-1/8" x 6" broadside pasted to 13-1/4" x 8" sheet. Text in single column below headline. Moderate toning, minor edgewear to sheet. A well-preserved copy. ,250. * The murder appears to have been the result of a brawl in a pub. A few minutes after it began, Rawlin called for help to his comrade Hardy, who smashed Richardson in the head with a large iron poker. They left Richardson for dead and proceeded home. After a long and solemn investigation, the jury returned with a verdict of Wilful Murder. The broadside indicates a pattern of similar crimes. "This is the third Murder that has been committed in the county of Durham within the last three years, under very similar circumstances, in the year 1823, Joseph Spraggon was murdered by Stanwick Newton on a Saturday night, at the door of a Public House, in Middle Rainton- In 1824, Henry Curry was murdered by Thomas Atkinson, on a Saturday night at the door of a Public House, at Birtly.- And in 1825, the above melancholy affair has occurred under the like incidents." This appears to be an unrecorded broadside. No copies listed on COPAC or OCLC.

Bleuler, Johann Ludwig (Louis)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Catastrophe De Don Augustin De Yturbide, Proclamé Empereur Du Mexique, Le 18 Mai 1822; Ou Relation Exacte Des Circonstances Qui Ont Accompagné Le Débarquement Et La Mort De Cet Homme Célebre Iturbide, Agustín de Paris, Libraire de F. Rosa, 1825 21pp. 19cmx12cm. Unbound. Small damp stain in the upper left corner. 4 small wormhole points, almost without affecting the text. Sabin: 35288. Very rare. No auction records. First edition in french, published simultaneously in spanish by the same printing press. This work addresses the most controversial issue related to the First Empire: the death of Agustín de Iturbide. Five days before his murder, Iturbide arrived at the port of Soto la Marina, Tamaulipas, from Europe after an exile of just over a year, completely ignoring the decree that Mexican lawmakers had enacted in order to prevent him to return to mexican territory. Iturbide's objective of returning to the country was to offer his services to the Mexican authorities in the face of the danger of an invasion by the Holy Alliance, which sought to reconquer Mexico. Upon his arrival, Iturbide was arrested, and then taken to Padilla, where the local Congress of the newly created state of Tamaulipas was meeting. The governor was Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara, who had sympathized with Hidalgo and Morelos, leading a group of insurgents in the Texas area. In his defense, Iturbide argued the possible invasion that was prepared with the help of the Holy Alliance, but no one believed him. The local congress ordered to comply with the federal decree and on … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blunt, Edmund M.
Sold by William Hamilton, Edmund and George W. Blunt [etc.], New York, 1825. First edition. [iv], 196, [20, ads] pp. 1 vols. Narrow agenda 8vo. A choice copy of the uncommon first edition of this standard American manual, by the important New York publisher of The American Coast Pilot, Bowditch's Practical Navigator, and many other sea manuals. Blunt's advertisement to the Expeditious Measurer explicitly states the reason for the new title, noting the many (and potentially costly) errors in the Merchant's and Ship-Captain's Ready Calculator (1816) "all which have been corrected in this edition." Blunt's work went through many editions during the antebellum period. Interestingly, Blunt's book ends with a discussion of calculating volumes of casks of wine and beer. American Imprints 19773 Contemporary mottled sheep, red spine label. Minor wear at extremities, a fresh and attractive copy. Very good [iv], 196, [20, ads] pp. 1 vols. "Wakefield wrote seventeen books, principally moral tales, natural history, and travelogues.Wakefield succeeded because she produced improving and didactic works of non-fiction that middle-class parents were choosing to buy. Unlike Romantic writings that celebrated imagination and fantasy, Wakefield's books have a deliberate tone, are filled with information, and focus on real-life experiences in the present day. MALIBRAN, Maria 1808-1836
1825. Apparently unpublished. Malibran, a highly distinguished Spanish mezzo-soprano, "was the daughter of the elder Manuel García and sister of the mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot. She studied with her father, a rigorous teacher whose harshness towards her was notorious, and made her London début at the King's Theatre in June 1825 as Rosina (Il barbiere)... To judge from the parts adapted for her by both Donizetti and Bellini, the compass (g to e ‴), power and flexibility of Malibran's voice was extraordinary. Her early death turned her into something of a legendary figure with writers and poets during the later 19th century." Elizabeth Forbes in Grove Music Online. Malibran made her Italian debut in June 1832 in Rome, followed by successful performances in Naples and Bologna. She was traveling with Bériot, with whom she had been romantically involved since 1829 and eventually married shortly before her death. At this time, she was pregnant with her second child, Charles-Wilfrid Bériot (1833-1914), and sought to have her planned December performances in Milan canceled. However, the impresario Gottardi was not willing to let her out of her contract, a fact attested to by this desperate letter to Lablache. It is not known whether Lablache intervened or not, but the legal challenge persisted even after Malibran and Bériot left for Belgium. Gottardi's efforts resulted in a two-year battle between the cities of Milan and Bologna that was only dropped in order to secure Malibran's La Scala debut in 1834. (RUSKIN, John) GOLDSMITH, Oliver.
Paris: A. & W. Galignani. 1825 Fronts.; lacking pp 39-42 vol. I, never bound in, some foxing to prelims. Uncut in green embossed cloth, brown morocco labels; spines sl. dulled. Presentation inscription in all four volumes: 'To the Hawkshead Institute. John Ruskin. Candlemans 1883'. Book labels of the Hawkshead Institute on leading pastedowns. v.g.The Hawkshead Institute was situated less than four miles from John Ruskin's home at Brantwood. A philanthropist and supporter of public libraries, Ruskin also gave a copy of Sir William Jackson Hooker's British Jungermanniae at Candlemas 1883. This title had originally been bought by Ruskin from Quaritch. Dearden's Library of John Ruskin records a seven volume 1792 edition of Goldsmith's Miscellaneous Works but no other. It is possible that this set is number 1045 in the catalogue which is an unspecified title by or about Goldsmith, purchased from Quaritch in January 1882. The Hawkshead Institute was in the Market Square and was comprised of 'a library, containing about 1,300 volumes, a billiard room, and reading, news, recreation and refreshment rooms. The Town Hall is a small building in the Italian style, erected in 1790, and enlarged in 1887 (Kelly's Directory of Lancashire, 1905). The library label includes five printed rules for the borrowing of books.

See Merlin, p. 174 and Bushnell, p. 147. Luigi Lablache (1794-1858) became … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Wakefield wrote seventeen books, principally moral tales, natural history, and travelogues...Wakefield succeeded because she produced improving and didactic works of non-fiction that middle-class parents were choosing to buy. Unlike Romantic writings that celebrated imagination and fantasy, Wakefield's books have a deliberate tone, are filled with information, and focus on real-life experiences in the present day.
