Paris: 1825. Exemplaire tel que photographié et décrit, mouillure transversale, toile absente du dos. Très très rare, le prix tient bien compte de l'état de la reliure et du papier. ALBUM SMALL FOLIO WITH 17 HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHS OF CHINESE LIFE & SCENES! LOVELY AND RARE!!! VOYAGE, ASIE, CHINE. [Click Below for Full Description]

FREYCINET (Louis-Claude Desaulses de).
[Paris, 1825]. 308 x 223 mm. [Click Below for Full Description]

BRYANT, Andrew
London,: Published By A. Bryant, 27 Gt. Ormond Street, Sept. 1st, 1825. DescriptionLarge scale engraved map, dissected and mounted on linen, in two sections, fine original full-wash colour, inset map of part of Buckinghamshire found within the borders of Oxfordshire, edged in green silk, housed in original full calf pull-off slipcase, gilt, rubbed and scuffed. NotesBryant's large-scale map of Buckinghamshire, dedicated to Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, who gained his remarkable surname after marrying Lady Anne Brydges, daughter and sole heir of the 3rd Duke of Chandos, adding a further two names to his original three. Between 1822 and 1835 Andrew Bryant surveyed thirteen English counties, much in the manner of the Greenwood brothers, though without the latters' extreme detail. With their swash lettering, vignette views and meticulous engraving there was a great similarity about their respective output. Of the six counties covered by both cartographers, in five instances they were both working in the field at the same time, even with the much talked about animosity between the Greenwoods and Bryant, it is most likely that they shared information. The map, like the Greenwoods', is very detailed, and shows boundaries of the counties, hundreds and parishes, churches and chapels, castles and quarries, farmhouses and gentlemens seats, heaths and common land, woods, parliamentary representatives, and distances between towns. The map is on a scale of 1 1/2 inches to the mile. The maps by Bryant are appreciably scarcer than those … [Click Below for Full Description]

Anonymous but probably P. C. L. Janet]
Paris, Louis Janet, ca. 1825. Oblong 8vo (19.0 x 12.3 cm). iv, 146, [i] pp.; Title page with large, engraved and finely hand-coloured vignette, 12 finely engraved, tissue-guarded plates with contemporary hand-colouring. Contemporary quarter polished calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt bands and title, and blind tooled vignettes. A wonderfully preserved copy of a very rare, delightfully illustrated satire on human behaviour, humorously compared with the behaviour of monkeys. OCLC reports only six copies, of which only one in France (Bibliothèque nationale), one in Spain, and four in American libraries - the one in the Morgan Library & Museum being incomplete, and none reported to be more than partly hand-coloured. The author is unknown, and, given the satire hidden behind the jolly illustrations, perhaps wisely remained anonymous. However, it seems reasonable to assume that the publisher, [Pierre Claude] Louis Janet (1788-1840) was the author, as he was known as a writer, in particular of works published by himself. Former owner's name pencilled in an old hand on the front free endpaper recto. Some (mostly light) rubbing to the boards, occasional light, marginal thumbing, a few small smudges, but generally very clean. The colouring is bright, careful and detailed. Only one auction record - in 1907. Not in any major bibliography, we could find. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Lee below. Howes L214. Gephart 13819. R.H. Lee served as President of Congress, proposed the committee of correspondence, and was the first Senator from Virginia. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail. Albert Lindley Lee (January 16, 1834 - December 13, 1907) was a lawyer, Kansas State Supreme Court Judge, and Union general in the American Civil War. Albert Lee was born in Fulton, New York. His parents were Moses Lee and Ann (Case) Lee. Lee was educated at Union College, and graduated in 1853.[1] He was admitted into the bar and practiced in New York. In 1858, Lee moved to Kansas. When he arrived he became one of the founders of the Elwood Free Press.[1] In 1859, he was elected a district judge, and when the American Civil War began Lee was serving as a justice on the Kansas Supreme Court.[2] At the outbreak of the Civil War, Lee joined the Union Army. Lee became a major in the 7th Kansas Cavalry, in October 1861. He was promoted to colonel of the regiment and took part in Henry W. Halleck's capture of Corinth, Mississippi.[1] Shortly after the fall of that city, Lee commanded the 2nd Brigade in the Cavalry Division of the Army of the Mississippi and participated in the battle of Corinth. On November 29, 1862 he received a promotion to brigadier general in the Volunteer Army.[2] He continued leading caval … [Click Below for Full Description]

[LA PEROUSE] SANQUIRICO, Alessandro, after, engraved by Carolina LOSE.
Milan: Autumn 1825. Aquatint with original hand colouring, 340 x 390 mm, mounted and handsomely framed. Atmospheric coloured aquatint depicting an evocative scene from the staging of the "Ballet-Pantomime" based on the disappearance of La Pérouse in the Pacific. Between the complete disappearance of the expedition in 1788 and the discovery of relics in 1827, just a couple of years after this performance, the mystery had captivated Europe. (Famously Louis XVI is said to have repeated on his way to the scaffold the question that he had been asking for months: ''Is there any news of M. de La Pérouse?").The disappearance inspired various highly imaginative performances or visualisations, and this scene was evidently one of the highlights from a very successful "pantomime" much performed in England and here being toured in northern Italy. As the caption notes the Naufragio was staged at the Teatrico Lirico in Milan (known as the Canobbiana until the 1890s). It starred the English actor William Barrymore (1759-1830). His European tour is not noted in the biography provided by the wonderful Garrick Club archives which mention his appearances in 'musical pieces and comedies. He was also a leading actor at the Haymarket Theatre for many summer seasons. Critical reports describe him as an awkward performer, who acted with stiff knees, and had trouble retaining his lines; but at least one friendly source praised his judgment, noted his improvement over the years and suggested that he was industrious and steady as a second-rate actor. The last several years of his career he spent in th … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Cuvier was considered by the public to be a bit of a wizard, a man who had brought to life animals that had long since become extinct... Cuvier knew how to make great strides in studying these creatures and could endow this study with new accuracy. His famous paleontological reconstructions had the living being as their point of departure... before witnesses he removed from a stone block the marsupial bones of a small opossum fossil, bones whose existence he had surmised on the basis of the conformation of the visible part of the skeleton. As early as 1804 Cuvier had the idea of reconstructing the musculature of extinct animals from imprints left by the muscles on the bones; then he merely had to imagine the skin over the muscles and the animal was practically brought back to life" "In the 1790s Cuvier began publishing a series of papers on fossil … [Click Below for Full Description]

[FREYCINET VOYAGE: HAWAII] PELLION, Alphonse, after, engraved by Adrian MIGNERET.
Paris: circa 1825. Early black-and-white proof engraving before addition of colour; manuscript colour notes in ink, bold ink note at top referring to an original drawing. Freycinet's annotated proof of Alphonse Pellion's engraved triple-portrait of Hawaiian dignitaries encountered during the visit of the voyage of the Uranie to the Hawaiian islands in August 1819. The portraits depict, from left to right, "one of the principal chiefs of Oahu"; Kiaïmoukou or "George Cox", the Royal governor of Maui; and "one of Kiaïmoukou's principal officers". More properly known as George Cox Kahekili Ke'eaumoku II, the governor of Maui had taken the English names of George and Cox to honour, respectively, the king of England and a sea captain who had befriended him. Hawaiians knew him as 'Pu?u Nui ("Great Pile"). The name refers to the rotting piles of excess goods outside his storehouses. In the true Hawaiian double entendre, the name also accurately described his physique: members of his family were known to be enormous' (Samuel Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, 1961). Freycinet has boldly annotated the proof engraving with colour notes in his familiar ink notation. The hat at left needs to be depicted as "chapeau de paille"; Ke'eaumoku's robe should be "draperies rouge or bleu"; and the officer at right is to have his hair ribbon "bleu clair", his "gilet" black, and his neckerchief to be coloured. Generally for the colours he notes "N.B. pour la couleur des figures consultez le dessin ci-joint". The plate as published follows these colour notes; it appears as plate 82 in the 1825 Atlas … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAGIC AND CONJURING
France: 1825. An Early French Magic Blow Book [MAGIC AND CONJURING]. [Magical Blow Book/Flip Book]. [France: n.d.c.a. 1825]. Small octavo (7 3/8 x 5 1/4 inches; 187 x 133 mm). This copy in contemporary blue marbled wrappers. Internally all plates very clean and bright. A beautiful copy of a magical blow book or flip book (also known as a magic coloring book). This type of trick is considered the oldest example of a "manufactured prop" to be used for magic. It works by a series of small notches, or incisions in the fore-margin to create tabs, (five tabs in this case) and depending on where the magician places their thumb, they flip the leaves of a certain group, revealing one set of plates. Then with a movement of the finger placement, a new set of plates will be revealed. With two sets of twenty-eight plates, complete with a total of 56 plates. The plates are all beautifully hand-colored with sharp detail, and each picture has a caption in French. The plates include a merchant, a magic lantern, soliders on horseback, birds, a man with a dog, a pagoda, a windmill, a goose, a nest, a drummer and a piper, an elephant and a camel, a church and a bridge, a and a dancing bear among others.
