ont> Knight and Lacey : London, 1825 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A very scarce first edition of the collection of the home economics periodical 'The Economist and General Adviser', complete here as two volumes in one. The first edition of this work. A very scarce work and an original and early source for this material that became much more widespread in the Victorian period. Two volumes in one. This work is an octavo, with the signatures running as [1], B-Z8, 2A-2L8, [1], B-Z8, 2A-2K8, [2L6]. Both volumes illustrated throughout with in text woodcut vignettes. Volume II with a frontispiece. 'The Economist and General Adviser' provided a variety of useful advice on housewifery and husbandry, as well as a selection of general advice and on the annals of gulling. The advice also discussed alcoholism, agriculture, medicine, landlords and tenancy, brewing, baking, shopping, travelling, marketing, and more. These types of home economical works were very popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth century, due to the rising literacy rates in England. There were many books and periodicals aimed to teach and aid lower and middle classes in housekeeping. The periodical changed its name to 'The Housekeepers Magazine and Family Economist' for 1836 only. The issues printed in these two volumes were all issues published under the name 'The Economist and General Adviser'. The issues in the first volume run from Saturday 22nd May 1824 with issue No. 1, to Saturday the 25th December 1824, with issue No. 32. The issues in the second … [Click Below for Full Description]

CATLIN, George (1796-1872)]
[Buffalo, 1825. Watercolour over graphite, heightened with white, on grey wove paper. Sheet size: 5 3/8 x 8 3/8 inches. Inscribed in pencil lower left "A helter-schelter at Buffalo 9th Oct. 1825 / 'Huzza boys, the Brewery!'" Affixed at corners onto album leaf, with later ink attribution to Catlin below. Matted. Provenance: Captain William Henry Shippard. An early, original watercolour by George Catlin. The present watercolour attributed by provenance to George Catlin depicts a fire at a brewery in Buffalo just days before the celebration of the opening of the Erie Canal. The watercolour was at one time part of an album assembled by Captain William Henry Shippard, who Catlin describes in his Notes of Eight Years Travels and Residence in Europe , as "my best of friends." Shippard, an English army officer, worked on Catlin's behalf in the 1840s in the London exhibition and attempted sale of his collection, and further assisted in Catlin's research as a reader at the British Museum. Catlin's career as an artist was gaining significant momentum at the time he executed this watercolour in 1825. After abandoning a career in law, Catlin moved to Philadelphia in 1821 to attempt to make his way as an artist. He exhibited frequently, and, in 1824, became a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He earned the bulk of his income doing society portraits and miniatures, though he tired quickly of both. In 1825, he travelled to Buffalo, producing original artwork on the construction and opening of the Erie Canal. Several of his drawings would be included as lithographs in Cadwall … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexander (William).
London, for James Godwin. Plates dated 1814, watermarks 1825-29. Small 4to, 7 1/2 x 10 inches, 190 x250 mm, original three quarters red morroco, marbled sides, backstrip with raised bands, edges just a little rubbed, completely untrimmed, and thus in the tallest possible state, publisher's paper label to top cover. With red cloth-covered custom box, purple velvet interior. pp (52), 50 fine hand-coloured engraved plates including title-page. Internally as crisp and fresh as I have ever seen, the colouring - sometimes a little muddy and faded - of the highest quality in this copy. The images show costumes from the Emperor and his courtiers to the lowest street-seller, and include officials, soldiers, sedan chair, pipe seller, chow-chow seller, jugglers, fishermen, puppet shows etc. Alexander accompanied the Macartney expedition to the Qianlong Emperor of China in 1793, and however disappointing the trade mission was found to be, Alexander's images made a striking impact on taste and design once published and circulated in the West. SOUTH SEA BUBBLE.)
London: For Thomas Boys, 1825. Duodecimo. Uncut in the original brown paper-covered boards printed in black, early manuscript title to spine over absent label, printed vignette to front cover. 19th-century bookplate of James Whatman to front pastedown. Spine worn at head with loss to paper covering, front free endpaper excised, light foxing to initial and final leaves. A very good, unsophisticated copy of this fragile volume. Engraved frontispiece and vignette title page. Second edition, expanded from the first of the same year with an additional 37 pages of appendices. Its publication coinciding with the repeal of the 1720 Bubble Act, the book gives a history of the spectacular rise and crash of South Sea stock, and reprints eight contemporary satirical verses, alongside an 1825 London Magazine article entitled "Bubbles", and legal opinions on the matter. The anonymous author draws parallels between the financial speculation of their own time and the crash of the century before, and gives a lengthy list of the various companies which they feel are modern day bubbles - it is clear why they chose to remain anonymous. Of note is their inclusion of several railway companies, which would indeed see over-speculation and crashes over the next few decades. Both the first and second editions are uncommon in commerce, but especially so in the original boards.

Hardcover. Complete set, approximate size 22cm x 14cm. Statesman, philosopher, scientist, and essayist, he served both as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. His ideas on the empirical method of scientific enquiry were particularly influential, and he has been described as the 'father of the scientific method'. This collection of his works was edited by the English scholar and barrister Basil Montagu between 1825 and 1837, and was regarded as definitive until superceded by James Spedding's edition in 1859. Further photographs available on request. Due to the weight of these books, an additional shipping charge will apply. . Very Good. 1825.

Neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. Title-page with neatly repaired tear and the words "Illustrated with Twelve Colour Plates" erased. Some minor soiling to blank borders of a few plates. An excellent copy of a very scarce little book. "Here's a piece of pork and greens, as exclaimed a good-humoured countryman, who got into some dilemma, with his cart and horses, one day. Here's a piece of pork and greens! This comes of notoriety. No sooner had the following little volume, got wind, than all the world was on the qui vive, to learn what characters, it was to contain. One got at one, and another at another, and then the last proof-sheet was dropped on its way to the printers. Thus, by degrees, several of the persons which it introduces, acquired publicity, and all the world was agog to give, to airy nothings, a local habitation and a name." (Editor's advertisement). Most of the texts were written by Count Laborde, and the queen's melody was then developed by a professional such as Dalvimare, harp master to Empress Joséphine, the composer Plantade, or the singing master J.F.N. Carbonel. This unpretentious music exemplifies the taste of contemporary society for light, pastoral, sentimental subjects. Although simple and naive, they are expressive and elegantly written, thanks to the skill of her musical colleagues." Laurine Quetin in Grove Music Online.. Oblong folio. David Reed
Boston, Massachusetts: Francis Y. Carlile, 1825. See item description. View items for sale Exceedingly rare, bound, and complete run of the CHRISTIAN REGISTER, Volume 4, published weekly in Boston in 1825. The 52 issues date from January 8, 1825 (Volume 4, Number 1), through December 31, 1825 (Volume 4, Number 52). The paper on which the newspaper is printed is quite supple even today, having a high rag content, and the pages are clean of handwriting, except for the frequent appearance of the recipient's name (R. H. Green, Esquire) at the tops of many Pages 1, presumably appearing there in order to facilitate delivery by the Post Office. Each issue contains four pages and the newspaper was published weekly on Saturdays. The CHRISTIAN REGISTER was published from April 20, 1821, through June 27, 1835, after which the name of the newspaper was changed to THE CHRISTIAN REGISTER AND BOSTON OBSERVER. In October, 1843, the name was changed back to THE CHRISTIAN REGISTER until 1957, when the name was changed to THE UNITARIAN REGISTER. Four years later the newspaper merged with THE UNIVERSALIST LEADER to become UU WORLD, which continues to be published to this day. The 1825 newspaper contains essays related to religion, particularly Unitarianism, as well as national and local Boston news. David Reed was the publisher during 1825; the following year the publisher would be the American Unitarian Association and in 1827 Mr. Reed resumed the title as publisher. This particular Volume IV is ex-libris, but the only indication of this is a bookplate ("York Institute Library") inside the fr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Almanac. Enfield, Mass. Freemasonry]. Philo Astronomiae
Printed and sold [by John Howe], price 5 dollars a groce, 50, 1825. First Edition. Softcover. 24 pp., title vignette depicting the symbolic Masonic triangle and compass. Collation: [A-B]2 [C-D]4 COMPLETE. Old wrappers, stitched. Scattered light to moderate foxing. Very good. ¶ Highly curious "Free-Mason Almanac," printed in Enfield, Mass., a town that no longer exists and now lies completely submerged beneath the Quabbin Reservoir, in Hampshire County. Incorporated in 1818, and disincorporated in 1938, Enfield was centered at the junction of the east and west branches of the Swift River. The last building in Enfield was razed in 1940. The Quabbin Reservoir is the primary water supply of Boston, some 65 miles to the east. ¶ Whereas the printer of the above Almanac is not named, the only printer in Enfield was John Howe (1784-1845) who also printed at Greenwich. This is the last in a long series of almanacs he published; it would appear that it the only Masonic item that Howe ever printed, almanac or otherwise. The preceding issues were entitled Howe's Almanac and Howe's Genuine Almanac. The title-page format of the present work is virtually identical with that of Howe's Genuine Almanac for 1824 and 1825. Contains a "Charade, for Howe's Almanac" (p. [22]) and an article on Freemasonry (pp. [22-23]). REFERENCE: Clifford Shipton, "Publications of the Howes of Enfield and Greenwich" in: Proceedings of the AAS, vol. 60, pt. 2 (1950), pp. 222. ¶ Scarce: while there is a copy at AAS, Worldcat lists only N-YHS and Amherst College. Ours appears to be the only copy currently on the ma … [Click Below for Full Description]
