Smith, Ethan
Smith & Shute, 1825. 12mo, pp. x, [3], 14-285; contemporary and probably original full sheep, red morocco label on spine; some rubbing and foxing, upper joint starting, but generally good and sound. Proto-Mormonism: Ethan Smith's attempt to identify the lost tribes of Israel with the North American Indians, a theory picked up five years later in Joseph Smith's Book of Mormon. My friend and colleague Ken Sanders notes: "Claims of plagiarism were leveled at Joseph Smith at the time, which he fastidiously refuted. This is the second edition which many people believed Smith used to write the Book of Mormon." American Imprints 22295; Rosenbach, 280; Sabin 82540.

BUCHANAN (Thomas)
London: Printed for Longman, Hurst & Co., 1825. First edition, 8vo (220 x 140 mm), [9], vi-viii, 118pp., with half-title, 5 engraved plates (lightly spotted), handsomely bound in quarter calf over marbled boards, morocco label lettered in gilt. Thomas Buchanan was a Hull physician who "stressed the importance of cerumen as an aid to hearing... He was ahead of his time in stressing the importance of 'the will to hear', the tension caused by expectation, as is noticed in animals whey they 'prick up their ears'. He noted the effect of distance upon harmony, and of the baneful effect of loud sounds, stating that 'the Highland bagpipe, which at a little distance on a wide and blooming heath has a melody and sweetness particularly agreeable to the Scottish ear, may produce a stunning effect when played in a small apartment.'"—Stevenson. CREEFIELD, Rachel; John Miller Dickey; Ebenezer and Jane Miller Dickey)
[Oxford, Pennsylvania, 1825. 7/3/2018. Very Good. Six hollow-cut portrait bust silhouettes: of Rachel Creefield, an African-American servant, and members of her employer's family: Ebenezer and Jane Miller Dickey, two of their adolescent children, and their eldest son John Miller Dickey, who later founded Ashmun Institute, America's first degree-granting black university. All six are cut from off-white wove paper and backed with black paper (with a positive image of the bust transferred in brown onto the backing sheet). Each measures about 3 ½" x 4 ½". Modest toning, very good or better. All six have been removed from frames, of which two have accompanying autograph notes retained from the back sheet of the original frame. An historically important suite of silhouettes from the Dickey family of Chester County, Pennsylvania, which includes one of the earliest known silhouette portraits of an African-American. We know of only one hollow-cut silhouette portrait that is earlier (circa 1803): of Moses Williams, who was born into slavery and later became the premier African American silhouette cutter at Peale's Museum in Philadelphia. This portrait of Rachel Creefield may very likely be the earliest known hollow-cut silhouette of an African American woman. Creefield's employer Ebenezer Dickey (1771-1831), owned and operated a two hundred acre farm and was a prominent pastor of the Oxford Presbyterian Church. A former slave owner, in 1805 he married Jane Miller, daughter of John Miller, a Scottish emigrant who developed a successful marble business in Philadelphia … [Click Below for Full Description]

DUPRE, Louis.
Paris Imprimerie de Dondey-Dupré, 1825. First edition, folio (59.2 x 43.8 cm), engraved title page, dedication, 52 pp., 12 engraved vignettes in text, 40 fine hand-coloured lithographs by Lemercier after Dupré, all plates titled and numbered, and blind-stamped with the artist's monogram encircled; complete with the Turkish Firman, text leaves a bit spotted, small marginal repair to lower blank margin plate 1, last plate a little toned with small marginal repairs to verso, all tissue guards taped to verso of preceding plate, contemporary Greek red half morocco gilt by Lardi of Athens with his ticket, neatly rebacked, corners renewed, covers a little spotted. Born in Versailles in 1789, little is known about Dupré's family or childhood. However, he had a powerful patron in Count Clément de Ris, thanks to whom he was able to study at the school of the renowned painter Jacques-Louis David, an apprenticeship that had a decisive impact on his personality as well as his art. In 1811, Cardinal Joseph Fesch, Bishop of Lyon, connoisseur and statesman, sent Dupré to Kassel, where he was named court painter to the king of Westphalia, Jérôme Bonaparte, who also facilitated Dupré's journey to Rome to study, in 1813. In Italy, Dupré travelled, studied and drew antiquities, in particular vases, while developing his skills in landscape and portrait painting. He became acquainted with artists such as the sculptor David d'Angers, the painter J.A.D. Ingres, the composer J. Rossini and the architect C.R. Cockerell. He met three British art lovers, Hyett, Hay and Vivian, who suggested that he ac … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: The Court of Proprietors of East India Stock, 1825. pp.8, xxxi, 1032. A very good copy bound in half-leather, one title page neatly repaired. By the early nineteenth century Oude was important to the East India Company both for its wealth and for its mercenary troops. Major John Baillie was Resident from 1807 to 1815. He was not always tactful in his attempts to implement Company policy, and disagreed with Lord Hastings' change of policy towards the Nawab which prescribed a relaxation of interference. After achieving the enthronement of Sadat Ali's eldest son in 1814 and earning his gratitude in the form of a £1 million loan to the East India Company, Baillie fell from favour with the new ruler who denounced him in a letter to the Governor-General. Although this letter was quickly withdrawn and disavowed he was removed from office shortly after arranging a second loan to the Company, receiving the blame for the shortcomings of the Oude adminstration. This volume contains the official correspondence between Baillie and the Governor-General relating to the extent of the involvement of British troops in Oude, and the arrangement of the two loans to the Company. It also sheds light on the Resident's removal from office. Colonel Baillie, opposed to the publication of these papers and Lord Hastings' summary of his handling of the situation, addressed several letters to the Company's court trying to force the publication of unofficial correspondence justifying his actions. The Court consented to the printing of these but they were disputed by some of the Company Direc … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEOPARDI, Giacomo (1798-1837)
Due parti in un volume in 12mo (mm. 173x104). Pp. [6], 638. Mezza pelle coeva con punte, dorso con fregi e titolo in oro, tagli gialli. Lievi fioriture sparse, alone chiaro al titolo. Ottima copia. Parenti, p. 308; Mazzatinti, 668; Benedettucci, 35/B..

Richard, Lord Braybrooke, Ed.
Henry Colburn, New Burlington Street, 1825. Full leather. A handsome 1st edition of Samuel Pepys' famous diary, which remains one of the great sources for the study of Restoration England. Complete in 2 thick quarto volumes, with 12 engraved plates, including a folding map. Bound in a gilt-edged full leather (dark-brown calf), with ornate gilt-titling and tooling at the compartments. Boards lightly rubbed at edges and corners, very light foxing --and just a bit of offsetting opposite the plates-- thruout the text. Both volumes tight, well-preserved and solidly VG+. This seminal diary, which Pepys wrote from 1660 to 1669, presents a fascinating picture of the official and upper-class life in Restoration London, with vivid, honest accounts of ordinary as well as great events, including the Plague and the Great Fire of London. The diary went unprinted for more than 150 years after its original composition because of its coded shorthand. For 3 years, the Rev. John Smith painstakingly deciphered the diary, all the while unaware that Pepys had taken his code from Thomas Shelton's "Tutor to Tachygraphy" (1642), which sat only a few shelves above the diary in Pepys' library. "It is a document of extraordinary interest, on account both of the light that its sincere narrative throws on the author's own lovable character, and of the vivid picture that it gives of everyday contemporary life, of the administration of the navy, and of the ways of the court". OCEL. NCBEL II:1583. GROLIER ENGLISH HUNDRED 75. Very Good +. [Attributes: First Edition]
