RHINE - DELKESKAMP, Friedrich Wilman.
Cologne: Printed for Friedrich August Mottu. 1825. Hand coloured etched vertical panoramic strip measuring 2200 x 240 mm (300 mm at Seven Mountains), and consisting of six sheets conjoined, affixed to and folding out of thick green roan backed yellow boards, 242 x 190 mm., together with pp. 20 booklet; overall in very good original condition. German river panorama consisting of a bird's-eye view of the Rhine from Cologne in the north to Mainz in the south, with identifications appearing in margins both left and right. The panorama was produced in several versions and this example is a variant of that is described by Alfred Sattler, in his Rheinpanoramen, Reisehilfen und Souvenirs: Katalog zu der Ausstellung in der Universitats- und Stadtbibliothek Kln, 7 Mai - 24 Juli 1993, pp. 19-21. That copy is stated to be by Friedrich Wilman Delkeskamp and to have been published in 1825 by him. There are, however, minor differences in the marginal identifications on that state and that described here, that said the engraved plate would probably have gone through several revisions over several years but as this copy still retains the accompanying booklet of 1825 it would appear to be an early or the earliest version. The colouring is very vivid and the engraved lines still sharp, which would seem to confirm this suggestion. The text volume would have been issued in several languages and included in a bespoke way as here. To confuse matters Kit Batten, 'Rhine Panoramas, or a Bridge too Far', IMCoS Journal, Autumn 2006, reproduces another (slightly later?) version that is printed from … [Click Below for Full Description]

FRASER, James Baillie.
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1825. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green,, 1825. A pioneering work on Persia with valuable material on the Gulf Quarto (268 x 202 mm). Slightly later dark blue half calf, gilt banded spine with blind foliate roll to compartments, red label, blue-grey pebble-grain cloth sides trimmed with a blind triple fillet, terracotta-coated endpapers, sepia speckled edges. Large engraved folding map by Aaron and Samuel Arrowsmith. Spine a little sunned, some wear to corners, back joint split at foot, extremities rubbed, old stain to back cover, front inner hinge cracked at gutter, yet this remains a good clean, tall copy, complete with the errata leaf and having the virtue of the map being preserved in a custom-made pocket at the end. First edition of this significant contribution to the knowledge of Persia as seen through Western eyes; Fraser's biographer Denis Wright describes it as "packed with information" and notes that among much well-observed detail Fraser "gives a rare first-hand description of the shrines in the holy cities of Qum and Mashhad, both of which he had entered in disguise, probably the first European to do so" (Wright, article, p. 127). It received a lengthy two-part review in the Journal des Savants (November 1826) by the distinguished French orientalist Silvestre de Sacy and the Edinburgh Review remarked that Fraser had "made valuable additions to our knowledge of Persia, and gained a right to rank as the very first to whom we owe a distinct view of any considerable part of Persian Khorasan" … [Click Below for Full Description]

ADAMS, John Quincy
Boston Cummings, Hilliard & co, 1825. In Regards to the Controversial Presidential Election of 1824 [ADAMS, John Quincy]. [SOMERVILLE, William]. Suggestions on Presidential Elections, With Particular Reference to a Letter of William C. Somerville, Esq. Boston: Cummings, Hilliard & co., 1825. First edition of pamphlet attributed to John Quincy Adams in support of a letter that was written by Willam Somerville regarding the need to reform the presidential election system in the United States, following the controversial election of 1824. Octavo (8 x 5 1/4 inches; 204 x 133 mm). 32 pp. Pamphlet, disbound with stab-marks present. Some mild toning, mainly to final leaf. Overall a very good copy. The presidential election of 1824 was a controversial one. Four candidates ran, including Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay and William H. Crawford. Although Andrew Jackson received the most popular and electoral votes (this was the first election that popular votes were counted), he did not have the majority as there were four candidates running and none of the candidates were able to secure the majority. This led the the decision being left to the House of Representatives. Adams, actively sought the votes of Congress with the help of Clay, and was subsequently declared President. Henry Clay was later appointed secretary of state by President Adams. To Jackson and many of his supporters, they considered Adams win to be a "corrupt bargain." On February 5th, 1825, William C. Somerville, a friend of Adams and author penned an article in the National Intelligencer on the general … [Click Below for Full Description]

JEFFERSON, Thomas
Philadelphia: H.C. Carey & Lea, 1825. 1825 Thomas Jefferson Notes on State Virginia SLAVERY Indians Colonial Americana "I cannot live without books." ― Thomas JeffersonThomas Jefferson's 'Notes on the State of Virginia' was his written response to various questions he had been asked about Virginia by French secretary Francois Barbe-Marbois. This book is regularly considered the most important American book published before 1800(Bernstein). This book is important for many reasons, but it gives insight to Jefferson's views on slavery, Native Americans, important laws, powers given to the people and the government, as well as how to exhaust resources reserved for the military. This book instilled fear in many slave owners, out of fear that their 'property' would be taken from them and that an emancipation would become imminent. A.P. HILL
A.P. HILL (1825-1865). Hill was an American officer who fought in the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, he joined the Confederacy and commanded the Third Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was killed at Petersburg on April 2, 1865.Free frank. 2pg. 10” x 8”. March 15, 1861. Washington. A free frank signature “A P Hill” on a printed United States Army circular. Hill signed on the address leaf of a printed letter bearing the printed signature of Captain W. R. Palmer of the United States Coast Survey Office. It is addressed by a clerk to Dr. B. H. Coates in Philadelphia. The letter informed its recipients that the 1859 Report of the Superintendent of the Coast Survey was in the mail, and if not received promptly, because of “frequent complaints of failure to receive Documents entrusted to the mail” they should apply at their post office. Franked by Hill for Palmer somewhat earlier as Hill had resigned his United States Army commission effective March 1, 1861; in a few weeks he was Colonel of the 13th Virginia Infantry Division. There is professional repair to fold separations. This is scarce and unusual. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Boston, Massachusetts: Francis Y. Carlile, 1825. See item description. View items for sale Exceedingly rare, bound, and complete run of the CHRISTIAN REGISTER, Volume 4, published weekly in Boston in 1825. The 52 issues date from January 8, 1825 (Volume 4, Number 1), through December 31, 1825 (Volume 4, Number 52). The paper on which the newspaper is printed is quite supple even today, having a high rag content, and the pages are clean of handwriting, except for the frequent appearance of the recipient's name (R. H. Green, Esquire) at the tops of many Pages 1, presumably appearing there in order to facilitate delivery by the Post Office. Each issue contains four pages and the newspaper was published weekly on Saturdays. The CHRISTIAN REGISTER was published from April 20, 1821, through June 27, 1835, after which the name of the newspaper was changed to THE CHRISTIAN REGISTER AND BOSTON OBSERVER. In October, 1843, the name was changed back to THE CHRISTIAN REGISTER until 1957, when the name was changed to THE UNITARIAN REGISTER. Four years later the newspaper merged with THE UNIVERSALIST LEADER to become UU WORLD, which continues to be published to this day. The 1825 newspaper contains essays related to religion, particularly Unitarianism, as well as national and local Boston news. David Reed was the publisher during 1825; the following year the publisher would be the American Unitarian Association and in 1827 Mr. Reed resumed the title as publisher. This particular Volume IV is ex-library, but the only indication of this is a bookplate ("York Institute Library") inside the f … [Click Below for Full Description]

This listing is for an antique bible from 1825. I am honestly not sure what the book is; I'm seeing a mix of Latvian and Hindi on the title page. It has a decent amount of wear from age. I believe its binding is made of sheepskin. Some of the pages have come detached, but most are still secure. Please see all photos for condition and feel free to ask any questions. ***Sales tax of 7.75% is added to all California transactions. HOOKER, Sir William Jackson (1785-1865)
printed for William Blackwood (Edinburgh) and T. Cadell (London), Edinburgh & London, 1825. (9 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches). 154 (of 233) hand-coloured engraved plates (40 folding) by J. Swan after drawings by Hooker, R. K. Greville, L. Guilding, J. Lindley, and others. Early half blue morocco over marbled paper covered boards One of the most beautiful and rarest works from one of the most important botanists of the Victorian era. Sir William Jackson Hooker made his name as professor of Botany at Glasgow University, before coming to London to take up his appointment as director of Kew in 1841. The present work, published during his period in Glasgow, is important not only for the very obvious beauty of the plates but also because it reflected "the extent of active plant introduction into Great Britain, and Hooker's part in it. Many of the plates represent new species . the notes give interesting details, often including the history of the introduction of the plants" (Margadant Hooker 6). Australia was one area to which Hooker paid paricular attention: "By the early 1820s plants collected by Charles Fraser and Allan Cunningham in Australia were becoming established for horticulture . Hooker treated some of these in his 'Exotic Flora'' (Hewson Australia 300 Years of Botanical Illustration p. 91). Dunthorne 140; Great Flower Books (1990) p.103; Margadant Hooker 6; Nissen BBI 920; Stafleu & Cowan 2993. Volumes 1 and 2, only (of 3), octavo [Attributes: Hard Cover]

DOIN, G. T. AND P. R. VIGNERON.
1825. Small folio; pp. [ii] original printed green paper wrapper to first fascicle bound in as general title, [64] of biographical text; with 32 lithograph portraits; somewhat foxed throughout, with the text leaves for Linné, Aldrovani, Celsus, Sydenham and Bartez rather browned, and those for Chaussier and Haller at the end of the work heavily browned; Rare. A complete set bound together of this most striking lithograph 'gallery' of some of the most notable figures in medical history. The inspiration of the physician Guillaume Tell Doin (1794-1845), the lithographer Pierre Roche Vigneron (1789-1872), and the publisher G. Engelmann (1788-1839), according to a contemporary review in the 'Archives générales de médecine; Journal publié par une société de médecins' (Tome IX, p. 312, Sept 1825), the original intention was to produce one hundred portraits, the whole publication issued in a series of monthly fascicles containing four portraits together with accompanying biographical text. Normal copies on plain paper would cost 6fr, whilst more luxurious copies on China paper priced at 9fr. However, as later notices reveal, the plan was revised down to a proposed series of 10 fascicles - and indeed ultimately only eight were produced, with 32 fine lithograph portraits issued. No more were published, and being issued in individual fascicles, the plates more often than not, now appear individually. It is thus uncommon to find a bound copy of the complete series. In the present copy beginning with Hippocrates, (the order of the copy found at Padova is different) Doin and Vigneron hav … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Edgeworth, Maria
London R. Hunter 1825. First edition. Vols 1 & 2 only(of 4). Playfully inscribed by Edgeworth to the front endpaper of vol 1: "Mr W. Beaufort from the wee author", the "wee" is a later insertion, an "s" has also been added to the "Mr", so it is inscribed either to William Beaufort, the brother of Edgeworth's step-mother, Frances Anne Edgeworth, or, if the "s" is to be taken seriously, to William Beaufort's wife. Both volumes have the bookplate of C. Lt. L. P. de Beaufort to the front pastedown, the title page of volume 1 has "Emma A. Beaufort" written neatly to the title page, vol 2 has "Emma Beaufort from the Author" written in the same hand to the rear endpaper, and below that "Emma Anne", to the front paper is neatly written Col. Edgeworth. I am assuming "Emma Anne Beaufort" to be Mrs W. Beaufort. The two volumes are bound in the publisher's boards with paper labels to the spines. vol 1 is in poor shape, the rear board is completely detached and much of the spine is gone, the text block is slightly loose, it is a little foxed and toned. Vol 2 has survived better and is reasonably firmly bound with most of the spine extant, the text block is slightly toned and foxed and the rear hinge is a little fragile. In poor shape, not least from the complete absence of two volumes, but an interesting association copy nevertheless and inscribed examples of Edgeworth's titles appear only infrequently on the market. Exemplarnummer 612. [Click Below for Full Description]
