Colden, Cadwallader
New York: Printed by Order of the Corporation of New York, 1825. THE GEORGE WASHINGTON FAMILY COPY. FIRST EDITION. Presentation copy tooled in gilt on upper board: “Presented by the City of New York to the Family of General George Washington. The First President of the United States.” A congressman from New York, Colden was intensely interested in internal improvements and lobbied for the Erie Canal. Constructed in 1818-1825, the Erie Canal cut transportation costs from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic by ninety percent. As a result, New York City became the leading American port. The statewide celebration culminated in the firing of successive cannon shots along the length of the canal and the Hudson, producing a 90-minute cannonade from Buffalo to New York City. This elaborate production is a celebration of the completion of the canals, an event that Colden correctly predicted would make New York the greatest commercial metropolis in the world. The canal’s construction was the greatest engineering feat in the United State sup to its time. This lavishly illustrated work is one of the earliest American books illustrated with lithographs, some from George Catlin drawings. These include panoramic views of a crowded New York Harbor, a cross-section of the canal, ornate fire trucks drawn by horses, views of scenery along the canal, and a spectacular folding panorama entitled, “Grand Canal Celebration View of the Fleet Preparing to Form in Line.” At the end of the volume are lithograph facsimiles of letters by Adams, Jefferson, Monroe, and others concerning the event. [Women's Education] Sarah Hitchcock, with Gaunnetta Grigg translators
New York, 1825. Quarter red roan over marbled boards measuring 8 x 6.25 inches with blue endpapers and the bookseller's ticket of John C. Totten to the front pastedown. Comprised of 100 handwritten manuscript pages including the hand-illustrated title. A collaborative translation conducted by two educated women, bringing the 1788 French romance into English nearly two decades before the first published English language edition of 1841. Part love story, part critique of political and economic inequality on the eve of the French Revolution, Pierre's novel was praised by Thomas Carlyle as a work "in which there rises melodiously the wail of a moribund world" and as a shining example of French Enlightenment fiction. While census records were indeterminate, preventing us from gathering details about the translators, what becomes clear is that they were educated, had leisure time, and were remaining up to date on the literature of their time (a French sequel to Paul et Virginie came out while this project was in process, as they note in a post-script). The present manuscript is a fair copy, representing the final product of Sarah Hitchcock and Gaunnetta Grigg's work. While Sarah's name alone appears on the title page, a note at the end marks "From the word 'flow,' page 82, the translation was finished by Gaunnetta Grigg." It is unclear why Hitchcock ceded the work to Gaunnetta at that point, or which of the two women neatly copied out the present manuscript from their notes. Yet it is clear that this was a long-term commitment, with the translation and clean transcription la … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Geo. B. Whittaker, 1825. First edition. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards with gilt and morocco to spine. A charming copy with a bit of shelfwear to extremities and some rubbing along front joint. Early gift inscription to front endpaper: "Samuel Walker presented by his affectionate Mother." Light scattered foxing throughout, more concentrated in the first half. Measures 108 x 178mm and collates [iv], 160: complete, including 3 handcolored plates. Misattributed to her male sources by OCLC records, this scarce book is an important example of women's significant contributions to the development of entomology. Educated rigorously at home in Latin, Greek, and the classics, Priscilla Wakefield early on was committed to work that expanded girls' access to the humanities and sciences. "Wakefield wrote seventeen books, principally moral tales, natural history, and travelogues...Wakefield succeeded because she produced improving and didactic works of non-fiction that middle-class parents were choosing to buy. Unlike Romantic writings that celebrated imagination and fantasy, Wakefield's books have a deliberate tone, are filled with information, and focus on real-life experiences in the present day. POMEROY, William
[Devon, East Anstey? Circa 1825]. Contemporary calf, heavily worn, front board detached, bookplate of War Memorial Library to paste-down, some pages browned. Large quarto (410 mm x 335 mm x 35 mm). 176 pages, with text in fine decorated borders. Provenance: The manuscript was gifted to Tiverton Library in 1946 by a relation of the Pomeroy family of Dulverton in Devon. A William Pomeroy is recorded baptized 1775, East Anstey, Devon. This is a large and beautifully produced manuscript with some quite unusual selections. It is a gorgeous example of a very creatively expressed devotion. Each page is given an individuated border, ranging from a simple double line, through to comb-inations of moon and stars, or decorative abstract patterns. In the preface, Pomeroy declares “The following Work is designed principally for my own instruction, and that of a few friends under whose inspection it may come.” Despite the scope and physical size of the manuscript, he mentions that “A limited space only being intended for each subject, many articles are necessarily abridged, which might have been considerably extended.” This self-imposed restriction seems to have been an aesthetic consideration to allow Pomeroy to fit each entry neatly into a single, nicely laid out page. Indeed, beauty seems to have been as much a guiding principle as piety. It contains many quite straightforward Church of England representatives together with some unexpected sources and many entries indicating a strong leaning towards nonconformism. Where place names are noted they tend to be from the West Country, espec … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Women's Education] Sarah Hitchcock, with Gaunnetta Grigg translators
New York: 20 October 1824 - 28 November 1825. Yet it is clear that this was a long-term commitment, with the translation a … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Wakefield, Priscilla]
Characteristically they have a family setting and promote new-style progressive pedagogy based in domestic conversations; mothers often teach their own children, and girls receive as much attention as boys" (ODNB). In this sense, Wakefield's scientific work drew on the "epistolary and dialogic form that was so crucial to young women's engagement with natural science in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Henry Colburn, 1825. Very Good. 4to in two volumes: xlii, 498, [2], xlix; [4], 348, vii, [1], 311. Illustrated with 13 full page plates (2 pedigrees, Facsimile of Pepys handwriting, 7 portraits, 1 map, and 2 views) Aside from some minor foxing, mostly to the preliminaries and the plates (which also show offsetting to the opposite leaves), this is a very bright, clean, tight set. Finely bound in contemporary full brown calf, rebacked with a more modern spine. Original boards' edges are a little worn and the leather has suffered some chipping. Decorative gilt borders. Original marbled endpapers, as well as marbled fore-edges. Deciphered from its original shorthand by Rev. John Smith between the years 1819 - 1822, Pepys' diary recounts first-hand accounts of a number of events during the English Restoration, including the Great Fire of London, the Second Dutch War and the Great Plague of London. Inarguably one of the most important works ever written on the history of London.
