[HODGKIN, Thomas, ed.]
London: Knight and Lacey, 1825. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Lacking only the week of Saturday, August 21, 1824 (No. XXIV). Numerous text illustrations and tables. Contemporary half-calf and marbled boards; an excellent copy from the libraries of the Essex Institute, Library of Francis Peabody, and Arnold Thackray, with their respective bookplates and the signature of Francis Peabody in both volumes. First and only edition. Fifty-seven (of the entire run of fifty-eight) issues of the short-lived "first English periodical on chemistry." Published weekly between March 13, 1824 and April 16, 1825, the Chemist was established as "a repository of every valuable discovery, either in chemistry or the sciences connected with it." According to Sotheran, the second volume is especially rare, and more so it's title and notice which are nearly always missing (which do appear in this copy). Of particular interest is the column, "To Correspondents" which appears at the end of each weekly number. The editors often utilize this space to provide personal opinions as to many of the letters they receive (including, without limitation, corrections that may have been pointed out in such correspondence), the majority of which are, for various reasons, unable to be printed.

SMITH, Thomas.
London: Printed for Sherwood, Jones, and Co.,, 1825. Richly illustrated guide to drawing Octavo (213 x 132 mm). Contemporary calf, red label, spine richly gilt to compartments, double gilt fillets to covers enclosing beaded roll in blind, marbled endpapers and edges, blue silk page marker. Illustrated throughout with woodcut diagrams and illustrations, 16 plates, 13 of which are hand-coloured, 58 colour samples within woodcut frames. Covers a little spotted, some foxing to contents, chip to fore edge of p. 13, offsets from plates. A very good copy. First edition of this richly illustrated guide to drawing and painting, part of the expansion of popular manuals for artistry which occurred in the early 19th century. This expansion reflected the fact that drawing and painting, which had once been considered a supplement to a general education for the genteel, had by the Regency Period become regarded as an essential component. The present work is a fine example of these popular guides, offering 28 lessons which start in perspective and finish in the contrast of colours, with guides to the anatomy of humans, animals and plants. The book is relatively scarce, with OCLC listing 16 copies in institutional holdings. Tooley, 459; not in Abbey. [Attributes: First Edition]

FRASER, James Baillie.
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green,, 1825. A pioneering work on Persia with valuable material on the Gulf Quarto (268 x 202 mm). First edition of this significant contribution to the knowledge of Persia as seen through Western eyes; Fraser's biographer Denis Wright describes it as "packed with information" and notes that among much well-observed detail Fraser "gives a rare first-hand description of the shrines in the holy cities of Qum and Mashhad, both of which he had entered in disguise, probably the first European to do so" (Wright, article, p. 127). It received a lengthy two-part review in the Journal des Savants (November 1826) by the distinguished French orientalist Silvestre de Sacy and the Edinburgh Review remarked that Fraser had "made valuable additions to our knowledge of Persia, and gained a right to rank as the very first to whom we owe a distinct view of any considerable part of Persian Khorasan" (Vol. XLIII, 1826, p. 106). Tournachon-Molin. [Click Below for Full Description]

A.P. HILL
A.P. HILL (1825-1865). Hill was an American officer who fought in the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, he joined the Confederacy and commanded the Third Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was killed at Petersburg on April 2, 1865. Free frank. 2pg. 10" x 8". March 15, 1861. Washington. A free frank signature "A P Hill" on a printed United States Army circular. Hill signed on the address leaf of a printed letter bearing the printed signature of Captain W. R. Palmer of the United States Coast Survey Office. It is addressed by a clerk to Dr. B. H. Coates in Philadelphia. The letter informed its recipients that the 1859 Report of the Superintendent of the Coast Survey was in the mail, and if not received promptly, because of "frequent complaints of failure to receive Documents entrusted to the mail" they should apply at their post office. Franked by Hill for Palmer somewhat earlier as Hill had resigned his United States Army commission effective March 1, 1861; in a few weeks he was Colonel of the 13th Virginia Infantry Division. There is professional repair to fold separations. This is scarce and unusual.

[No place, 1825. Unbound. Very Good. Small embossed paper mache(?) or embossed card illustration plaque of the figure of a kneeling slave painted in black, white, and blue, which is surrounded by an oval metal frame that is hand painted in gold and lavender with the sentiment "How Sweet Is Liberty" surrounding the image; which is in turn mounted in a round marble frame. Unexamined out of the frame (the figure and surround are partially sealed into the frame with plaster), the figure appears near fine, the metal surround has some rubbing and is very good, the marble is moderately chipped and worn. One of many keepsakes featuring this kneeling figure which were popular with abolitionists starting around 1800 until the outright abolition of slavery in that country and its colonies in 1834. The image, sometimes called "Hercules Subdued", was designed as the seal of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade, and was widely distributed as a cameo by abolitionist and manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood.

4to, 33cm, c.66ff (lower free-endpaper detached). Red ribbed morocco gilt by Riviere (rebacked retaining original spine; corners worn; occ. scuff mark). A curious hybrid book/scrapbook entitled Memoirs Of Theodore Lane by Pierce Egan. Illustrated. Lane was an English painter and engraver who engraved and etched the plates that accompanied Egan's 1825 The Life Of An Actor. It was in comic illustration that Lane's talent lay, but not a talent that was long to be realised for Lane died in accident at the age of twenty-eight when falling through a skylight. The work includes an autograph letter from Egan, A tipped in printed memoir of Lane on consecutive leaves printed by Whittingham at Chiswick, extracted from another work, of some thirty pages interspersed with leaves containing engravings (some hand coloured) of actors and prominent persons. This is followed by 26 leaves of hand-coloured engravings drawn & engraved by Lane and four further leaves with nine tipped in illustrations presumably by Lane.Three ex-libris bookplates are present in this unique volume that gives a homage to a rare comic talent tragically cut short, of Herschel V. Jones; Thomas William Waller & Alfred N. Beadleston.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Evelyn, John
Henry Colburn. 1825 EXPANDED AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF JOHN EVELYN'S MONOGRAPH ON FORESTRY, FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1664. Two 11 1/2 inches tall hardbound volumes, 3/4 leather binding with marbled boards, red leather label with gilt title to spines, Vol. I, frontis portrait of author, 330; Vol II, 393, [4], 88 pp, 42 copper plate engravings (2 folding), Terra, 3 plates, binder's plate list. Volumes have been expertly rebacked, cover edges and corners worn, scattered foxing, binding tight, plate impressions strong, very good. JOHN EVELYN (1620 - 1706) first presented Sylva in 1662 as a paper to the Royal Society. This was in response to the Royal Navy's concerns about timber shortages arising from the degraded state of the nation's forests. It was published as a book two years later in 1664, and is recognised as one of the most influential texts on forestry ever published. He described in detail the tree species of greatest use, and the fittest to be cultivated, focusing on oak (2,000 oak trees were needed for each navy ship). He also addressed trees' requirements for air, soil and water, and tree diseases. The book went through 4 editions during Evelyn's lifetime, and 5 editions edited by Alexander Hunter between 1776 and 1825 (offered here). Engravings for these editions were contributed by John Miller (Johann Sebastian Muller, 1714-1792), engraver, and botanist, trained at Nuremberg, and from 1744 active in London.
