Antique print, titled: 'Salvia patens' - This attractive subtle partly hand coloured print shows the Gentian Sage, a Salvia variety. Mezzotint engraving and roulette on steel with plate and hand colouring on wove paper. Watermark: J W (J. Whatman) Description: From: 'Transactions of the Horticultural Society.', published by the Horticultural Society of London, ca. 1825. Numbered: Hort trans, Vol II, plate X. Second Series. A notable feature of this publication was its pioneering use of steel (as opposed to copper) for the engraved illustrations after 1820. A number of artists and engravers were involved in the production of the different engravings, but in all instances these are exceptionally beautiful images skillfully rendered by a combination of different techniques including engraving, mezzotint, aquatint and stipple, colored a la poupee and by hand.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'William Say' after 'Miss Drake'. William Say (1768-1834) was a productive English engraver. He was a pupil of James Ward. Say worked entirely in mezzotint, creating 335 plates between 1801 and 1834. Condition: Good, given age. Left edge irregular from binding. Sheet trimmed as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: E5-37 The overall size is ca. 8.7 x 11 inch. The image size is ca. 7.7 x 10.6 inch. The overall size is ca. 22 x 28 cm. The image size is ca. 19.5 x 27 cm.

Agassiz I, p.309. Caprotti II, p.9. Nissen ZBI, 391.

ECOLE NAPOLITAINE
Original gummed print, dating from the first quarter of the 19th century. This print, taken from the Saint-Jean district in Geneva on the right bank of the Rhone, was later added to a set of Italian landscapes in an amicorum album among engravings, lithographs, drawings, and wash.Executed in the first quarter of the 19th century, these prints summarize the stages of the "Grand Tour" of Italy and its surroundings, the obligatory journey of the post-Napoleonic nobility who came to Italy or Switzerland to make an artistic and bucolic pilgrimage to the great Renaissance works, urban panoramas and delightful mountain lakes. The European aristocracy was therefore fond of these prints of good graphic quality enhanced by brilliant colors, which brought together the high places of architecture and the Italian and Swiss countryside.(Naples) circa. 1825 13x19cm, gouache 6,8x11,5cm une feuille sous marie-louise

Portraits & Autographs of Composers and Performers] Busby, Thomas. (1754 - 1838)
1825. 3 volumes. 12mo, crushed brown morocco with gilt-lettered spine by Rivière & Son, edges rubbed, some bowing to boards; bookplates of Frances Amelia Adams, front hinge of first volume cracked with front free endpaper detached, moderate foxing and offsetting scattered throughout. An extraordinary set, extra-illustrated with 5 autographs and over 150 18th and 19th-century engravings bound in, with many inlaid to size. Most illustrations are cut down to 12mo, some with slight losses to the images; some are flush mounted to an inset window; some are larger formats folded down. Engravings are generally in very good to fine condition, many with toning to the edges, some with light foxing and some with light plate marks.A remarkable collection and veritable encyclopedia of portraiture of the period, assembled with great care, whereby at nearly every mention of a name within the printed Busby text, whether in passing or as the object of more extended focus, the collector (Frances Amelia Adams?) has found and inserted a relevant portrait (or, in a few cases, an original document) of that person.  Thomas Busby, himself a composer, published several notable works on music, including A Grammar of Music and A General History of Music. The present work is charmingly gossipy, informative and highly entertaining, and yields all manner of insights into musical life through history. Approximately a thousand anecdotes are assembled across the three volumes as a delightful potpourri. Among much else, Volume 1 includes discussion of Sir John Hawkins and Beethoven's eccentricity, Volume 2 w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bonaparte, Napoleon] Antommarchi, F. C.
Printed for Henry Colburn, London, 1825. A work describing the illness and death of Emperor Napoleon by Francois Carlo Antommarchi (1780 - 1838), an Italian physician who served as Napoleon's physician from 1818 to his death in 1821. Antommarchi performed an autopsy the day after Napoleon's death; controversy concerning the cause of death lingered for years.Antommarchi was one of a series of doctors who treated Napoleon on St. Helena, sent there in 1819 by Napoleon's uncle. Napoleon rejected many of their treatments; he appears to have suffered from a variety of ailments. A 2007 study by American, Swiss and Canadian researchers using modern methods and accounts such as Antommarchi's, came to the conclusion that the cause of death was an advanced case of gastric cancer. Two volumes, with Signet Library gilt embossed stamp at front covers.8vo, Vol I: viii, 416pp. Vol II: 286pp; ads [2]pp. Tan calf, raised bands at spine. Schadow (Johann Gottfried), 1764-1850
Wittenberg, Zimmermann ('Gedruckt in der Rübnerschen Buchdruckerei in Wittenberg'), 1825. Only edition of an account of the artistic treasures of Wittenberg, compiled and partly-illustrated by the sculptor Schadow, who as his sight deteriorated had turned more to writing art theory and history and to graphic work (he was a proficient draughtsman, engraver, and lithographer). The publication celebrates Schadow's bronze statue of Luther, designed between 1802 (the date of a competition sponsored by the Vaterländische-Litterarische Gesellschaft der Grafschaft Mansfeld) and 1820, and unveiled in the Marktplatz in Wittenberg for the Reformationsfest on 31 October 1821. A folding lithograph by Schadow himself records the Luther statue from three sides; an anonymous engraving depicts it beneath a canopy made to Karl Friedrich Schinkel's designs; and another by the Berlin printmaker Ferdinand Berger serves to introduce the volume (frontispiece). Among the many illustrations are engravings reproducing sculptural monuments in the Schlosskirche (Allerheiligen) and Stadtkirche (Marienkirche), Lucas Cranach the elder's altarpiece in the Stadtkirche, and lithograph portraits of Peter Vischer and Lucas Cranach the elder by Schadow, and an impressive self-portrait. Schadow, Johann Gottfried Berlin 1764 - 1850 Berlin Wittenbergs Denkmäler der Bildnerei, Baukunst und Malerei, mit historischen und artistischen Erläuterungen. THOMAS J. ?
RHODE ISLAND (?): (1825). Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. On offer is a beautiful and very well preserved 1825 book of mathematics relating to various aspects of geometry, trigonometry, surveying and more. The book is an excellent addition to the collection of those who delight in seeing the products of education in first half of 19th century. "Geometrical Problems" which include boxes devoted to "parallel lines," "to bisect or divide a given line in the middle" or "to draw an angle of 15 degrees" and a diagram below the words showing a drawing of that stated geometry. The next section is under the title "Mensuration of Superficies." This is divided into three parts, each with a number of rules, diagrams, problems, and solutions. For example: "Case 4th. To find the area of any triangle; Rule. Multiply the base by the perpendicular height and half the product will be the area. Example. What is the area of a triangle whose sides are 12, 14, and 16 rods." Following this example, a diagram is drawn of the triangle and the problem is solved next to the diagram. At the end of each section, there are a number of "Miscellaneous Questions" that the student answers. The following section labelled "Surveying" is by far the longest in the book. It is 35 pages in length, and covers a very indepth and comprehensive amount of mathematical rules and cases needed to understand how to survey. Each question tends to get its own page, with the question at the time, mathematical calculations and charts under that, and finally a diagram taking up the bottom half or so of the page that the student u … [Click Below for Full Description]
