WINCKELMANN, Johann (Joachim)
Donaueschingen, Verlag deutscher Classiker, 1825. 8vo (Text) u. Großfolio (Tafeln). Halbleinen d. Zeit (Text, berieben u. bestoßen) u. Originalpappband (Tafeln, fleckig u. bestoßen, Rückenbezug mit kl. Fehlstellen). Kleinere Schriften, enthält u.a. - 2. Schriften über die herculanischen Entdekungen. 1758-1763. Mit Beilage. - 3.-6. Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums. 1763-1768. - 7./8. Denkmale der Kunst des Altertums. - 9. A short and friendly letter from noted artist and explorer Louis Choris to Jean-Baptiste Arthus-Bertrand, Parisian bookseller and eventually the official publisher for the French Navy. [Chile] [Castro Barros, Ignacio de; Fariñas, Juan; Donoso, Juan].
Second edition, from the second printing house established at Cordoba, and printed the same year, most likely simultaneously to the first, both extremely rare. This second printing press of Cordoba was acquired by popular subscription under the rule of General Bustos in 1823. The contents are varied, however the deal mostly with current events, the inherence and relation of Church and State, superstition, the place of religion in a Republican spirited State and a particularly lengthy chapter on the progress of Christianity of the catholic Religion in the United States, their treatment and tolerance to cults, and special reports on the Diocesis of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Bardstown in "Kentucly" [Kentucky], and Baltimore. The periodical was elaborated by: F. Juan Fariñas, Chilean, a strong ideological supporter of the Independence of Chile; during the wars, he was imprisoned and condemned to death, however, for some reason, he was pardoned by the Commander of the Royalist forces, who changed his sentence for imprisonment rather than execution; later in his life he worked in the periodicals "El Imparcial” and "El Coquimbano". And by Justo Donoso, born in Chile in 1800, a polymath -lawyer, professor, preacher, and journalist. This edition of Cordoba was prepared by Ignacio de Castro Barros. The volume is to our understanding complete, and runs from the 23 March 1825 through 14 January 1827 (Number 13). We have not been able to find any copies of this journal in any U.S. library, nor have we been able to trace any copy having appeared in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Clay, Henry]
[Washington?, 1825. 33, [1 blank] pp. Disbound. Light wear, Very Good, contemporary notation on title page. Clay's Letter is dated at the end March 26, 1825, from Washington. It is his first detailed justification of his conduct in the hotly contested 1824 election, which John Quincy Adams won when Clay threw his support to Adams in the House of Representatives. Clay was charged with engineering a "corrupt bargain" when Adams appointed him Secretary of State, a stepping-stone to the presidency. Adams's Inauguration had occurred only three weeks earlier. Clay's long rebuttal of the "unmerited animadversions", when he was merely acting in the "honest and faithful discharge of my public duty," focuses first on his candidacy for the presidency and the events which would throw the four-way election into the House. It is a detailed discussion of the most complicated presidential election in our history. Clay notes with irony that, before he made his choice, "I seemed to be the favourite of every body...I knew that the sunbeams would quickly disappear, after my opinion should be ascertained, and that they would be succeeded by a storm; although I did not foresee exactly how it would burst upon my poor head." He explains his refusal to be bound by the Kentucky Legislature, which had instructed him to vote for Jackson; and evaluates the relative merits of Adams and Jackson, who had won the popular plurality. FIRST EDITION. Coleman 2708. 168 Eberstadt 277.

[ Cookery ]
London: Printed for Thomas Boys, 1825 First edition, a work with "the especial view of proving that the generally received opinion of the middle classes…respecting French dishes, namely, that they are almost all unwholesome, extravagant, and difficultly prepared, is founded in prejudice, and is either false, or highly exaggerated" (p. i). In the "Prefatory Remarks," the author states, "…the present work has been edited, in order to fill up [an] obvious deficiency in our family libraries, by laying before the British public a copious selection of the most simple and least expensive receipts in French cookery" (p.i) while also noting that, "The reader will find in the following, amongst numerous other receipts in this work, directions for re-serving dishes which have previously appeared at table; and will remark, that though these receipts afford great variety, very few of them are either expensive, or too difficult to cook" (p. ii) There are 1,068 recipes in French Cookery, such as: roasted and larded filets of … [Click Below for Full Description]

SMITH, Thomas.
London: Printed for Sherwood, Jones, and Co., 1825. Octavo (213 x 132 mm). Contemporary calf, red label, spine richly gilt to compartments, double gilt fillets to covers enclosing beaded roll in blind, marbled endpapers and edges, blue silk page marker. Covers a little spotted, some foxing to contents, chip to fore edge of p. 13, offsets from plates. A very good copy. Illustrated throughout with woodcut diagrams and illustrations, 16 plates, 13 of which are hand-coloured, 58 colour samples within woodcut frames. First edition of this richly illustrated guide to drawing and painting, part of the expansion of popular manuals for artistry which occurred in the early 19th century. This expansion reflected the fact that drawing and painting, which had once been considered a supplement to a general education for the genteel, had by the Regency Period become regarded as an essential component. The present work is a fine example of these popular guides, offering 28 lessons which start in perspective and finish in the contrast of colours, with guides to the anatomy of humans, animals and plants. The book is relatively scarce, with OCLC listing 16 copies in institutional holdings. Tooley, 459; not in Abbey. [Attributes: First Edition]

Manzoni, Alessandro
presso Vincenzo Ferrario, 1825. [Click Below for Full Description]

HOGG, John.
[London, 1825-7]. 8vo, notebook, paginated by hand 3-186 (apparently wanting a title-page) with a list of Contents at the front; two poems set to music (by G. Godwin and Moses Lawrence, in total 20 pages); written in brown ink throughout, in a legible hand, with scattered corrections in pencil and pen; first and last pages browned; contemporary calf, rebacked and re-cornered, new endpapers.A fascinating volume of manuscript verse by an otherwise unknown poetaster, probably based in Southwark. In his grandiloquent Preface, Hogg explains that his poems are designed to excite in the reader the pleasurable contemplation of heaven, via 'the Study of Nature' and of our souls.
