Henry Colburn, 1825. Illustrated, with a frontispiece of Pepys and a further six plates to volume I. With a frontispiece and four plates to volume II. With the bookplate of Philip Worsley Wood to both volumes. Wood was a Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He had an extensive career in academia, with published writings, being Junior Proctor at the University and also College Librarian. This is the first published edition of Pepys' diary in full. Lord Braybrooke, Richard Griffin, is the editor of this edition. He was a British Whig politician who wrote several historical works and was president of the Camden Society for several years. He used John Smith's transcription of the diary for this publication. John Smith was the first person to decipher the diary in its entirety. Previously small sections had been deciphered. It transpired that Pepys' original diaries were written in a shorthand system devised by Thomas Skelton. Smith's transcription is held in the Pepys library. Pepys' diary enabled historians to understand more about 17th century London. He wrote extensively on personal finances, weather and food. In addition to day-to-day activities the diary provides a commentary on significant events during his lifetime. These include the Restoration of the British Monarchy, the Anglo-Dutch war, The Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. Collated, complete. CONDITION In full diced calf bindings. Bres, Jean-Pierre.
Paris: Lefuel, 1825. First Edition, eight volumes each with one engraving PRINTED IN COLOR, heightened by hand, original white wrappers printed with color lithographs housed in original double-compartment box with lithograph printed in color on cover (lid), gold foil which is stamped bordering edge of box, original pink and blue ribbon pulls. Page size: 6 x 4". The eight volumes are titled: The Little Milkmaid, The Little Schoolgirl, The Little Flower Seller, The Little Harvester, The Little Savoyard, The Little Shepherd, The Little Boatman, and The Little Firewood Gatherer (5 girls and 3 boys). Each volume has an engraving printed in color of a child dressed in the manner suiting the occupation in the title. The neo-classic colored bordered lithographs on the covers of each title have elements of the occupation included, such as flowers in La Petite Marchande des Fleurs and fish, seashells, and seaweed in The Little Boatman. The text of this charming children's set is titled Simple Stories, and they are just that, clearly meant for young readers. This is an extraordinarily fine set of this early French children's title. Gumuchian listed it at 3000FF and pictured it twice. The color printing is of a very high quality and unusual for this period. The box and books have an immediately discernable freshness and charm heightened by the fine condition. It is very rare to find all eight parts of this set in fine condition, not to mention the original box. Gumuchian 916.

London: Printed for Payne and Foss, & Harding, Triphook and Lepard, by William Nicol, 1825. London: Printed for Payne and Foss, & Harding, Triphook and Lepard, by William Nicol,, 1825. from ancient historians and authentic documents. Octavo (190 x 123 mm). Late 19th-century green morocco by Marcus Ward & Co., spine lettered in gilt and richly gilt to compartments, double gilt fillet to covers incorporating gilt foliate cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Late 19th-century bookplate of the Thomas Bewick collector Robert Pinkney, incorporating a Bewick design. Very minor rubbing to extremities and occasional foxing. A lovely, highly appealing copy, wide-margined with the half-title present. First edition. Published 22 years after the author's death, Ritson's Life of King Arthur combines an impressive degree of knowledge regarding early Arthurian materials together with an unsentimental and rigourous scepticism, which placed much of the Arthurian legend as the invention or adaptation of Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century. Despite this, Ritson firmly asserts that King Arthur was a real historical figure. The late 18th and early 19th centuries saw a rapid increase of public interest in King Arthur following two centuries of relative obscurity, with Ritson's study offering a dispassionate, scholarly analysis of the historicity of the figure.

DE LAMENNAIS, FELICITE (1782-1854). An important dossier of around 100 manuscript letters signed revolving around the controversal life of French Catholic priest and philosophy, Felicite de Lamennais. Three of the letters are written and signed by Lamennais, including one in which he signifies his obedience to the Papal Encyclical Mirari Vos, which was directed at many of Lamennais' ideas and writings. There is also one manuscript letter written and signed by Jean-Baptiste Lacordaire (1802-1861), and two written and signed by Charles de Montalembert (1782-1854). The Lacordaire and Montalember letters are not addressed to Lamennais. However, the remaining manuscripts are mostly addressed to Lamennais and come from various persons, including intellectuals, politicians, admirers, critics, etc. and are dated from between 1825 to 1850. Some of the correspondence is extremely interesting with topics on the philosophy of man, Lamennais' work as editor, papal infallibility, Protestantism, and Lamennais' participation in the 1848 Revolution. Most letters are in very good condition or better.
