Geoffry Gambado, [William Henry Bunbury]
London: Ackermann, 1825. Illustrated throughout with 27 hand coloured engravings. Collated, complete. The author, Geoffry Gambado, was a pseudonym for famous caricaturist Henry William Bunbury. It appears that this work was published posthumously, with Bunbury dying in 1811. In his work, Bunbury's serious efforts were not always recognised however his caricatures are as famous as those by his contemporaries Thomas Rowlandson and James Gillray. Other examples of Bunbury's work include Country Club, Barber's Shop and A Long Story. Unlike other caricaturists of the day Bunbury did not offend the nobilities of his day by creating political satire and he had many great friendships with the nobilities. In paper covered boards. Rebacked, with original paper covered boards and spine laid over and a new imitation spine label attached. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to original paper covered boards as well as heavy handling marks and the odd spot. Internally, firmly bound. Prior owner's stamp to front pastedown. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd account of offsetting and the odd spot throughout. Overall Condition: Very Good.

Two larger series of similar photos were published by Andries de Jager (1825-1905) previously. Besant. Souvenir d'Amsterdam 1883", that is the famous theosophist, socialist and women's rights activist Annie Besant (1847-1933), who was in Amsterdam in 1883 for a congress. The work was originally published as a leporello, but most of the photos are hear detached. Some thumbing in the margins and the hinges worn; photographs still in good condition.

He saw action in the Seven Years' War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. [Mott, Abigail] A Mother
New York: Mahlon Day, 1825. First Edition. Original quarter sheep over marbled boards with gilt title to spine, encased in a hand-sewn contemporary sheep wrapper. Slight worming near foot of spine; hinges starting but holding firm. Offsetting to front and rear endpapers and mild foxing throughout. Contemporary ownership stamp and gift inscription to second flyleaf: "Sarah Osborne Please to accept this this as a token of remembrance from an absent brother, 8 Mo. 1825." Collates complete, with copyright notice pasted to recto of title page and 79 page. Overall a very nice copy of this important and exceptionally scarce work on women's education. Observations has appeared only three times at auction, most recently 13 years ago; and OCLC reports only one institutional copy held at Harvard. Abolitionist and women's rights activist Abigail Mott was the sister of the famous suffragist Lucretia Mott. Both raised as Quakers, the Mott sisters were committed to the principles of human equality; this defined both of their lives. While the Mott sisters were both passionate about ending slavery in the United States, they took separate paths in the promotion of women's rights; Lucretia pursued women's enfranchisement, and Abigail pushed for equal education. The present work was her most famous on the topic, as it stressed that the education of women was not only beneficial to women themselves but to society as a whole. "If we carefully examine the pages of ancient and modern history, we shall find that where darkness and superstition have most prevailed, the female character has been most … [Click Below for Full Description]

A View of the Constitution of the United States of America. Philadelphia: Philip H. Nicklin, Law Bookseller, 1825. vii, [5]-347 pp. Octavo (8-3/4" x 5-1/2"). Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, lettering piece and blind fillets to spine, endpapers renewed. Moderate toning, early owner signature (J.L. Aitken) and small faint later library inkstamp to head of title page, library marks to its verso, early owner annotation to p. 295. An appealing copy in a handsome binding. $1,500. * First edition. Rawle's treatise is one of the earliest works on the United States Constitution, and one of the most important. This text is significant also because it suggests that states have a right to secede from the Union. As Cohen observes, the popularity of this text, which was used at West Point and other schools throughout the country, "is generally considered to have influenced the leaders and supporters of the Confederacy, although in fact Rawle opposed secession: (Cohen). The annotation to our copy refers to secession. Reading "Vide Story on the Constitution p. 327," it is footnoted to the sentence reading: "The secession of a state from the Union depends of the will of the people of such state." William A. Stewart (1825-1892)
The personal and professional life of prominent and affluent Baltimorean William A. Stewart (1825-1892) are documented in these two manuscript notebooks kept by him between 1866-1871 and 1886-1892. The notebooks contain very detailed records of the day-to-day activities of Stewart's law practice including both receipts and expenses. Stewart's career spanned a law practice and a long career as a politician and, later, elected judge. Of special note is the running thread of of Stewart's busy and successful law practice seen (typically) in single-line entries. These entries are intermingled with single to double-line entries revealing his equally busy private life. Stewart writes in a very small, though quite legible, hand, so there is a great deal of information recorded in the two day books which comprise almost 375 manuscript pages. Across the first day book, 1866-1871, professional and office expenses are recorded. Legal books and legal forms are purchased. A law library subscription is kept up. Printing costs, office costs, and witness fees are entered. Monies earned by Stewart from his own fees are dutifully recorded. Agreements are written. Deeds are gone over. Legal opinions given. Estate and trust issues or cases "in Equity." Appearances in the Court of Common Pleas. And in one legal case instance, Stewart is seen earning over $110 for his services. The names of Stewart's clients are also recorded. Their attendant reasons for retaining Stewart as a lawyer are represented in a few brief, pithy words. Notably, in one six month period, Stewart netted over $8500 in profit … [Click Below for Full Description]

TANNER, Henry Schenk
Philadelphia: Henry, 1825. unbound. very good. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Measures 44.25 x 59 inches. In very good condition. Tanner's large scale map of North America is one of the most significant maps of the continent of the 19th century. It combines the information garnered from a host of important expeditions, such as Lewis and Clark, Pike, and James, into a single map that shows the extent of North America in 1825. Some of the most notable portions of the map include the Mississippi and Missouri River Valleys, the Columbia River Basin, the Rocky Mountains, Texas, and the Oregon Territory. Copious informational notes throughout give further insight into the knowledge held of this region at the time of the map's publication. In addition to its cartographic achievement, the map also boasts a magnificent title cartouche that combines the North American landmarks of Niagara Falls and Natural Bridge with wildlife native to different parts of the region, such as a rattlesnake, eagle, beaver, moose, and a polar bear.

Just ask! 1825 BOTANICAL Hortus Gramineus Woburnensis Sinclair Botany Illustrated DARWIN In the early 1800s, George Sinclair, a notable English gardener to the Duke of Bedford, began planting the garden at Woburn Abbey. "Thomas Clarkson was a leading campaigner against slavery and the slave trade in Great Britain. He was born in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, England in 1760. Clarkson's stong antislavery stance was formed as a student at the University of Cambridge. He then devoted his life to ending the slave trade and slavery. He has often been referred to as the "Friend of Slaves." Clarkson began questioning the inhumanities of slavery and the slave trade as he gathered materials for an essay contest which set out to answer the question "Anne liceat invitos in servitutem dare?" ("Is it lawful to make slaves of others against their will?") The resulting prize winning essay was inspired by the works of Anthony Benezet, a Quaker from Philadelphia (Griggs, p 25). Clarkson was not himself a Quaker. He belonged to the Anglican Church. He came upon Benezet's "Historical Account of Guinea" during his research and won the first prize at the University of Cambridge in 1785 for "An essay on the slavery and commerce of the human species, particularly the African". Clarkson determined a person cannot be considered … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first edition of a compendium of notable trials held at Newgate between the years 1413 and 1825. Compiled by writer George Henry Borrow (1803-1881), the work, arranged chronologically, presents detailed accounts of the most high profile trials in England's history, including, but not limited to; the sentencing of Joan of Arc on charges of witchcraft; the trial of Sir Walter Raleigh for high-treason; the investigation of the conspirators involved in the Gunpowder Plot; and the execution of highwayman Richard "Dick" Turpin. At the behest of publisher Richard Philips, who had engaged Borrow's services, the later volumes include trials foreign as well as domestic - the most prominent of these being the proceedings of the French Convention following the Revolution in the sentencing Louis XVI and Marie Antionette. Size: 12mo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
