Richard, Lord Braybrooke, Ed
Henry Colburn, New Burlington Street, 1825. Condition: Very Good +. A handsome 1st edition of Samuel Pepys' famous diary, which remains one of the great sources for the study of Restoration England. Complete in 2 thick quarto volumes, with 12 engraved plates, including a folding map. Bound in a gilt-edged full leather (dark-brown calf), with ornate gilt-titling and tooling at the compartments. Boards lightly rubbed at edges and corners, very light foxing --and just a bit of offsetting opposite the plates-- thruout the text. Both volumes tight, well-preserved and solidly VG+. This seminal diary, which Pepys wrote from 1660 to 1669, presents a fascinating picture of the official and upper-class life in Restoration London, with vivid, honest accounts of ordinary as well as great events, including the Plague and the Great Fire of London. The diary went unprinted for more than 150 years after its original composition because of its coded shorthand. For 3 years, the Rev. John Smith painstakingly deciphered the diary, all the while unaware that Pepys had taken his code from Thomas Shelton's "Tutor to Tachygraphy" (1642), which sat only a few shelves above the diary in Pepys' library. "It is a document of extraordinary interest, on account both of the light that its sincere narrative throws on the author's own lovable character, and of the vivid picture that it gives of everyday contemporary life, of the administration of the navy, and of the ways of the court". OCEL. NCBEL II:1583. GROLIER ENGLISH HUNDRED 75. [Attributes: First Edition]

KOZLOV, Ivan Ivanovich.
[St Petersburg: National Education Department Press,] 1825. Octavo (188 x 121 mm). Contemporary quarter cloth, green manuscript label to spine, marbled paper sides. 19th-century shelf mark to title and bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown, inscription dated 1830 to divisional half-title and a couple of other minor contemporary annotations and jottings. Minor rubbing to extremities, discreetly reinforced at inner margin throughout, tear to pp. 13-14 repaired with slight loss to text, marginal repairs to 2 other leaves not affecting text, a few minor nicks at page extremities, light patches of staining and foxing throughout, last leaf soiled. Still a good copy of this rare work. First edition of Kozlov's Byronic poem, the work that established his literary reputation, and which spread Byronic ideals among the Russian literary scene. Kozlov (1779-1840) lost his sight in 1821 and had to forgo his successful military and civil service career. He instead took to writing, learning English and German to add to his Russian and French, and began his career as a poet and translator. Through translating Scott, Moore and Byron he was introduced to romantic literature, and fell under the sway of Byron especially. His poem The Monk "is a Byronic confessional poem, a tale of love, death, and revenge shrouded in an atmosphere of mystery" (Terras, p. 234). Initially travelling in manuscript across Russia, its publication in 1825 spawned numerous imitators. Kozlov was soon compared to Pushkin, and indeed some felt he surpassed him: Pyotr Vyazemsky wrote to Alexander Turgenev in 1825 that "th … [Click Below for Full Description]

BINDINGS). (BYRON, GEORGE GORDON, LORD). GAMBA, COUNT PETER
John Murray, London, 1825. 220 x 138 mm. (8 5/8 x 5 1/4"). xii, 307, [1] pp. (without the half title). FIRST EDITION. ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY MAROON MOROCCO BY ROBERT RIVIERE (his ticket on front pastedown), covers with gilt frame in the Romantic style featuring curling tendrils and botanical ornaments, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with curling frames, gilt titling, gilt-rolled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With two folding facsimiles. Front flyleaf with early ink signature of B. Batt. Droulia 823; Atabey 476; Blackmer 646. A touch of rubbing to extremities, one corner slightly bumped, occasional minor foxing, one facsimile with short tear along one fold (no loss), but an excellent copy internally, clean, fresh, and mostly rather bright, in a very well-preserved binding. This firsthand account of the final days of the great Romantic poet is offered here in a Romantic-style binding from the early days of a great British workshop. Robert Riviere began as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829, then set up shop as a binder in London in 1840; in 1881, he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership, at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son, and the bindery continued to do business until 1939. The ticket in our binding gives an address of 24 Union St., Bath, indicating that it was done sometime before 1840, and the style is one popular in the 1830s. Riviere bindings from this period are uncommonly encountered. The text here is an eyewitness account of Lord Byron's final days in Missolonghi, to which he had travelled to fight for the … [Click Below for Full Description]

PARRY, William.
London: Printed for Knight and Lacey; and Westley and Tyrrell, Dublin,, 1825. with the Lordship's opinions on various subjects, particularly on the state and prospects of Greece. Octavo. Uncut in the original boards, printed paper label to spine. Portrait frontispiece and 3 hand-coloured plates. Contemporary ownership signature to title page and jottings to front pastedown. Discreet repair to joints and spine backing, small patch of insect damage to half-title. An excellent copy in the fragile original boards. First edition of this excellent record of Byron's final days. William Parry (1773-1859) travelled to Greece as an artillery officer in the crusade for independence. There he met Byron, who enjoyed his company, and employed him as his adviser and occasional amanuensis. Parry saw Byron frequently during his fatal illness, and it was Parry who heard his last words. Parry's book was fiercely loyal to Byron and highly critical of members of the Greek Committee, leading to fierce controversy, attacks on Parry's character and subsequent libel cases. The book's publication showed the public's fascination for the great literary celebrity, and indeed, indicates the cult-like status he had acquired among his admirers.

William Williams
London: Taylor and Hessey, 1825. Thought to be semi-autobiographical, this book details the journey of a sailor who is cast away in the New World. Written in the mid-1700s, this book did not achieve print until 1815, due to its fictional elements not fitting in with the then current vogue for true travel tales. With a frontispiece and one other plate. Direct from the Regency library of Elizabeth Greenly, later Lady Elizabeth Coffin Greenly. Elizabeth Greenly, born at Titley Court, Herefordshire, was a noted and varied collector. She kept prolific diaries from 1784 until her death in 1839 which included her responses to current events and occasions in her daily life. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear, including Lord Byron, Marie Antoinette, Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had travelled, and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaeology. The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes, Science, topography, travel, Bibliana and literature, particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works, and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over 1000 volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. George Sinclair
James Ridgeway. Very Good: Gorgeous Illustrations Intact: wonderful exploration of British natural history. George Sinclair was a botanist; in this work, he is exploring the nutritional value of various grasses as animal fodder through comparison of their water-soluble components. Originally published in folio form with cuttings of the grasses mentioned, this is the second edition and is profusely illustrated with prints of the various grasses in color. The study was instituted by the Duke of Bedford while recuperating from ill-health and done with the assistance of various others including Sir Humphrey Davies. The illustrations are just stunning both in detail and the accuracy of approach. Filled with tables and comparisons, this is a great historical document detailing grasses or "weeds" that were cultivated in Great Britain to aid in the feeding of farm animals. Prints signed variously by "C. Hullmandel", or "E.D. Smith, del and A Bailey Sculp". Please do not hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures. Very Good Condition: 4to, leather spine with marble boards; spine is grass green with gilt bands bracketing the title on a brown background with gilt lettering. Re-bound. Some age appropriate discoloration to the pages along with some shadowing, specifically of the title page due to age and ink composition. Pencil marks with occasional marginalia. Rawle, William
1825. Philadelphia, 1825. First edition. First Edition of a Treatise on the U.S. Constitution Used to Justify Secession Rawle, William [1759-1836]. A View of the Constitution of the United States of America. Philadelphia: Philip H. Nicklin, 1825. vii, [5]-347 pp. Octavo (8-3/4" x 5-1/2"). Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine, endpapers renewed. Moderate toning, four small library markings to verso of title page. An appealing copy in a handsome binding. $2,000. * First edition. Rawle's treatise is one of the earliest works on the United States Constitution, and one of the most important. This text is significant also because it suggests that states have a right to secede from the Union. As Cohen observes, the popularity of this text, which was used at West Point and other schools throughout the country, "is generally considered to have influenced the leaders and supporters of the Confederacy, although in fact Rawle opposed secession: (Cohen). The annotation to our copy refers to secession. Reading "Vide Story on the Constitution p. 327," it is footnoted to the sentence reading: "The secession of a state from the Union depends of the will of the people of such state." Geoffry Gambado, [William Henry Bunbury]
London: Ackermann, 1825. Illustrated throughout with 27 hand coloured engravings. Collated, complete. The author, Geoffry Gambado, was a pseudonym for famous caricaturist Henry William Bunbury. It appears that this work was published posthumously, with Bunbury dying in 1811. In his work, Bunbury's serious efforts were not always recognised however his caricatures are as famous as those by his contemporaries Thomas Rowlandson and James Gillray. Other examples of Bunbury's work include Country Club, Barber's Shop and A Long Story. Unlike other caricaturists of the day Bunbury did not offend the nobilities of his day by creating political satire and he had many great friendships with the nobilities. In paper covered boards. Rebacked, with original paper covered boards and spine laid over and a new imitation spine label attached. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to original paper covered boards as well as heavy handling marks and the odd spot. Internally, firmly bound. Prior owner's stamp to front pastedown. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd account of offsetting and the odd spot throughout. Overall Condition: Very Good.

Geoffry Gambado, [William Henry Bunbury]

UK Thomas Kelly, 1825. Two volumes. Containing 13 folding maps, 75 additional plates and maps and a frontispiece to each volume. Despite the bold claims of the title, the first volume deals in quite summary fashion with Asia, Africa and America and the entire second volume is devoted to Europe, with excessive focus upon France and recent events involving a Mr Bonaparte, scant attention is paid to the polar regions, although we do get a section on Astronomy at the start in order to give us a sense of our place in the wider cosmos. The books are firmly bound in contemporary calf with marbled endpapers and page ends, re-backed at some point preserving most of the spines and the original endpapers and pastedowns, the boards are somewhat bumped, rubbed and stained. The text blocks are toned, slightly foxed and with some staining. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Besant. Souvenir d'Amsterdam 1883", that is the famous theosophist, socialist and women's rights activist Annie Besant (1847-1933), who was in Amsterdam in 1883 for a congress. The work was originally published as a leporello, but most of the photos are hear detached. Some thumbing in the margins and the hinges worn; photographs still in good condition.
