Hahnemann, Samuel
EGERTON, Michael.
Here and there over the water: being cullings in a trip to the Netherlands. London, George Hunt (printed by J. Davy), 1825. 4to. With aquatint illustration plates (27 plus frontispiece) after the author's drawings (24 engraved by George Hunt and coloured by a contemporary hand; 4 of inscriptions in black and white engraved by W. Bartlett), with tissue guard leaves. Early 20th-century gold-tooled red goatskin morocco by George Bayntun (the Bayntun bindery continues to flourish today as one of the finest in England). [2], 34 pp. plus plates. First and only edition of an eccentric account of a tour in what is now Belgium (from 1815 to 1830 part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands) by a fictional traveller referred to as "Omnium Gatherum", humorously written and brilliantly illustrated by Michael Egerton, whose work has been compared with that of George Cruikshank. The people he sees play an important role, from the passengers in the coaches to a chimney sweep on a roof, people drinking and dancing, soldiers in the streets and Waterloo locals who try to fob off any piece of garbage as a remnant of the battle. The handsome plates depict coaches, barges, the exchange in Antwerp, costumes, and monuments at Waterloo. Gatherum lands at Ostend, then travels to Ghent, Brussels, Antwerp and finally Waterloo, which is covered very extensively, only 15 years after Wellington defeated Napoleon. With bookplate of the Philadelphia art collector Charles Edward Dunlap. In very good condition, with only a small marginal tear in one leaf. The binding has cracks in the hinges, but is otherwise in g … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHURCHILL, James Morss.
Traité de l'acupuncture, ou zin-king des Chinois et des Japonais; ouvrage destiné a faire connaître la valeur médicale de cette opération, et a donner les documens nécessaires pour la pratiquer.Paris, Crevot (back of half-title: printed by De Lebel), 1825. 8vo. Modern paper-covered boards. [3], [1 blank], III, [1 blank], 44 pp. First edition of the French translation of Churchill's Treatise on Acupuncturation, the first English monograph on acupuncture, first published in 1821. The ancient practice of acupuncture gained devotees among French doctors beginning with Dujardin in 1774, after French missionaries had learned about it in China and Japan. Churchill's account aroused a wider interest in the practice, and the French translation by R. Charbonnier, was perhaps even more influential than the English original. With a contemporary owner's inscription on title-page. A minor restoration to the upper margin of the half-title and a small marginal water stain on the first 6 leaves. Overall a good copy of one of the earliest western accounts of acupuncture. Wellcome, p. 347; cf. Garrison & Morton 6374.14; Waller 1982.

Reis door de Republiek van Columbia, in het jaar 1823; ... Uit het Fransch vertaald door A. Bruggemans.Dordrecht, Blussé and Van Braam, 1825. 2 volumes bound as 1. 8vo. With 6 lithographed plates (1 bound as frontispiece). Contemporary brown half roan, gold-tooled spine. XVI, 283; VIII, 274 pp. Very rare first edition of the Dutch translation of a travelogue through the Republic of Colombia by Gaspard Théodore Mollien (1796-1872). The author starts with describing his journey from France to Bogota, sailing along the American coasts. In Colombia he visits all the provinces and gives brief descriptions of cities as well as smaller towns, the inhabitants, and landmarks. Some chapters deal with Colombia's history, also including an eyewitness account of the riots in Socorro and New-Grenada, while others give a geographical description of Colombia: its mountains, climate, seasons, forests, mining, rivers, indigenous animals and pets. Mollien also describes in depth the culture, customs, psychology and physiology of the Colombians. The islands of Jamaica, Curacao and Tenerife are also described.Browned with some occasional foxing. [SURINAM - WATERCOLOUR].
[Four scenes in Surinam].[Surinam?, ca. 1825]. Four pen and watercolour drawings (9.5 x 16 cm; 10 x 16 cm; 14 x 20 cm; 17 x 22 cm). Mounted on 19th-century paper and recently matted. Collection of four early-19th century watercolours, showing scenes probably in Surinam, by an unknown artist, possibly originating from an album and showing common scenes in the Dutch colony.Ad 1: Watercolour showing three men on a pondo or raft used for transporting freight. Two dark-skinned slaves navigate the raft using poles while a third lighter-skinned man stands still and carries a pole or fishing rod. Although the artist painted in the river, even using the back of his brush or a dry pen to scratch in the light reflecting off the water, no other background is visible and the slight darkening in several parts was possibly intended to reflect a misty environment.Ad 2: Watercolour of a planter's house situated in the jungle next to a river or creek. Similar in technique to ad 1, including scratched-in reflections off the water, the mostly white background shows thick foliage before a barely visible mountain. The artist shows more skill in atmospheric perspective than in linear perspective; the roof appears a bit wobbly.Ad 3: Watercolour of a ship being consumed by fire, with three other ships and two ship's boats nearby, the boats probably carrying the crewmen of the burning ship. This watercolour possibly illustrates the fire aboard the merchant vessel Willem I, destroyed in the night of 12 April 1825 near Paramaribo. The explosion of a powder keg led to an enormous fire and resulted in t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Histoire de la domination des Arabes et des Maures en Espagne et en Portugal, depuis l'invasion de ces peuples jusqu'a leur expulsion définitive.Paris, Alexis Eymery, 1825. 3 volumes. 8vo. Contemporary dark brown half morocco, gold- and blind-tooled spines. [4], "XXXVIII" [=46], [2 blank], 504; [4] 470, [2 blank]; [4], 412 pp. First edition of the French translation of a very detailed history of the Islamic presence on the Iberian peninsula, first published as Historia de la dominación de los Árabes en España ... (Madrid, 1820-1821). After several introductory chapters giving background information about Islam and the Caliphate in general, it gives a detailed account of the Islamic state in its various guises in what is now southern Spain and Portugal (al-Andalus) from Abd al-Rahman I's conquest of Córdoba in 756 to Castile's annexation of Granada under Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. During part of this period it was the Caliphate of Córdoba, an important centre of Islamic culture. It was enormously influential both through the original Spanish edition and through the translations into German, English and the present French, providing many readers with a more detailed account of the subject than they could find elsewhere and helping to shape the historical view of Islamic Spain. With occasionally a small spot or stain, but overall in very good condition. Binding only slightly rubbed along the extremities. The Arab history, a biographical list (1966), p. 256; cf. R. Irwin, For lust of knowledge, p. 175.

Gilt-ruled green morocco over thick boards, fleurons at the outer corners, double-rule inner frame enclosing a bloom roll, gilt-ruled spine, sewing bands with gilt red morocco onlays, thick dark blue endleaves, all edges gilt, by Riviere: a brilliant set with no foxing at all, interleaved with blanks at the time of binding with no offsetting. Lower cover of the binding at some time tied up with string with ensuing indentation. § First edition, limited to 150 proof sets (65 sets were also printed on French paper, and 100 sets on drawing paper with the word 'proof' removed). This is one of finest sets of the proofs I have ever seen, and far outshines the other two original printings and the later re-issue. The India paper set is the best printing of these famous plates which comprise Blake's major single achievement as a printmaker after the illuminated books. Illustrations of the Book of Job was Blake's last completed prophetic book: the text, a series of biblical quotations, is above and below each image. "It was produced while Blake was still working on Jerusalem, his most obscure book; yet the illustrations are Blake's most lucid; and they are the supreme example of his reading the Bible in its spiritual sense" (S. Foster Damon, A Blake Dictionary, p. 217). "The modest size of the central panels does not prevent them from ranking with the su … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boston, Massachusetts: Francis Y. Carlile, 1825. See item description. View items for sale Exceedingly rare, bound, and complete run of the CHRISTIAN REGISTER, Volume 4, published weekly in Boston in 1825. The 52 issues date from January 8, 1825 (Volume 4, Number 1), through December 31, 1825 (Volume 4, Number 52). The paper on which the newspaper is printed is quite supple even today, having a high rag content, and the pages are clean of handwriting, except for the frequent appearance of the recipient's name (R. H. Green, Esquire) at the tops of many Pages 1, presumably appearing there in order to facilitate delivery by the Post Office. Each issue contains four pages and the newspaper was published weekly on Saturdays. The CHRISTIAN REGISTER was published from April 20, 1821, through June 27, 1835, after which the name of the newspaper was changed to THE CHRISTIAN REGISTER AND BOSTON OBSERVER. In October, 1843, the name was changed back to THE CHRISTIAN REGISTER until 1957, when the name was changed to THE UNITARIAN REGISTER. Four years later the newspaper merged with THE UNIVERSALIST LEADER to become UU WORLD, which continues to be published to this day. The 1825 newspaper contains essays related to religion, particularly Unitarianism, as well as national and local Boston news. David Reed was the publisher during 1825; the following year the publisher would be the American Unitarian Association and in 1827 Mr. Reed resumed the title as publisher. This particular Volume IV is ex-library, but the only indication of this is a bookplate ("York Institute Library") inside the f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Raro trovare completa questa importante opera. "Claude Fleury, ecclesiastico, storico e giurista francese (1640-1723). [No place, 1825. Small embossed paper mache(?) or embossed card illustration plaque of the figure of a kneeling slave painted in black, white, and blue, which is surrounded by an oval metal frame that is hand painted in gold and lavender with the sentiment "How Sweet Is Liberty" surrounding the image; which is in turn mounted in a round marble frame. Unexamined out of the frame (the figure and surround are partially sealed into the frame with plaster), the figure appears near fine, the metal surround has some rubbing and is very good, the marble is moderately chipped and worn. One of many keepsakes featuring this kneeling figure which were popular with abolitionists starting around 1800 until the outright abolition of slavery in that country and its colonies in 1834. The image, sometimes called "Hercules Subdued", was designed as the seal of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade, and was widely distributed as a cameo by abolitionist and manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood.

[HODGKIN, Thomas, ed.]
London: Knight and Lacey, 1825. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Lacking only the week of Saturday, August 21, 1824 (No. XXIV). Numerous text illustrations and tables. Contemporary half-calf and marbled boards; an excellent copy from the libraries of the Essex Institute, Library of Francis Peabody, and Arnold Thackray, with their respective bookplates and the signature of Francis Peabody in both volumes. First and only edition. Fifty-seven (of the entire run of fifty-eight) issues of the short-lived "first English periodical on chemistry." Published weekly between March 13, 1824 and April 16, 1825, the Chemist was established as "a repository of every valuable discovery, either in chemistry or the sciences connected with it." According to Sotheran, the second volume is especially rare, and more so it's title and notice which are nearly always missing (which do appear in this copy). Of particular interest is the column, "To Correspondents" which appears at the end of each weekly number. The editors often utilize this space to provide personal opinions as to many of the letters they receive (including, without limitation, corrections that may have been pointed out in such correspondence), the majority of which are, for various reasons, unable to be printed.

SMITH, Thomas.
London: Printed for Sherwood, Jones, and Co.,, 1825. Richly illustrated guide to drawing Octavo (213 x 132 mm). Contemporary calf, red label, spine richly gilt to compartments, double gilt fillets to covers enclosing beaded roll in blind, marbled endpapers and edges, blue silk page marker. Illustrated throughout with woodcut diagrams and illustrations, 16 plates, 13 of which are hand-coloured, 58 colour samples within woodcut frames. Covers a little spotted, some foxing to contents, chip to fore edge of p. 13, offsets from plates. A very good copy. First edition of this richly illustrated guide to drawing and painting, part of the expansion of popular manuals for artistry which occurred in the early 19th century. This expansion reflected the fact that drawing and painting, which had once been considered a supplement to a general education for the genteel, had by the Regency Period become regarded as an essential component. The present work is a fine example of these popular guides, offering 28 lessons which start in perspective and finish in the contrast of colours, with guides to the anatomy of humans, animals and plants. The book is relatively scarce, with OCLC listing 16 copies in institutional holdings. Tooley, 459; not in Abbey. [Attributes: First Edition]

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green,, 1825. A pioneering work on Persia with valuable material on the Gulf Quarto (268 x 202 mm). Slightly later dark blue half calf, gilt banded spine with blind foliate roll to compartments, red label, blue-grey pebble-grain cloth sides trimmed with a blind triple fillet, terracotta-coated endpapers, sepia speckled edges. Spine a little sunned, some wear to corners, back joint split at foot, extremities rubbed, old stain to back cover, front inner hinge cracked at gutter, yet this remains a good clean, tall copy, complete with the errata leaf and having the virtue of the map being preserved in a custom-made pocket at the end. First edition of this significant contribution to the knowledge of Persia as seen through Western eyes; Fraser's biographer Denis Wright describes it as "packed with information" and notes that among much well-observed detail Fraser "gives a rare first-hand description of the shrines in the holy cities of Qum and Mashhad, both of which he had entered in disguise, probably the first European to do so" (Wright, article, p. 127). It received a lengthy two-part review in the Journal des Savants (November 1826) by the distinguished French orientalist Silvestre de Sacy and the Edinburgh Review remarked that Fraser had "made valuable additions to our knowledge of Persia, and gained a right to rank as the very first to whom we owe a distinct view of any considerable part of Persian Khorasan" (Vol. XLIII, 1826, p. 106).
