Original Lithograph By Samuel Prout
London Circa 1822-1826, 1825. 1st Edition 1st Printing. No Binding. Near Fine. Original Engraving, Mounted On A Card Which Is Mounted On A Larger Card. One Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. Samuel Prout (1783 - 1852) Was One Of The Masters Of British Watercolour Architectural Painting. Prout Secured The Position Of Painter In Water-Colours In Ordinary To King George Iv In 1829 And Afterwards To Queen Victoria. John Ruskin, Whose Work Often Emulated Prout's, Wrote In 1844, "Sometimes I Tire Of Turner, But Never Of Prout". Prout Is Often Compared To His Contemporaries; Turner, Gainsborough, Constable And Ruskin, Whom He Taught. He Was One Of The First To Use Lithography. His Eye Caught The Picturesque Features Of The Architecture, And His Hand Recorded Them With Skill. The Composition Of His Drawings Was Exquisitely Natural; Their Colour Exhibited "The Truest And Happiest Association In Sun And Shade"; The Picturesque Remnants Of Ancient Architecture Were Rendered With The Happiest Breadth And Largeness, With The Heartiest Perception And Enjoyment Of Their Time-Worn Ruggedness; And The Solemnity Of Great Cathedrals Was Brought Out With Striking Effect. He Established His Reputation With These Street Scenes, And Gained Praise From His Erstwhile Student John Ruskin. Until Prout, Says Ruskin, Excessive And Clumsy Artificiality Characterized The Picturesque: What Ruins Early Artists Drew "Looked As I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beethoven Ludwig van
1825. Kinsky/Halm S. 395 - Dorfmüller S. 18, 233, 350 f. - Hirsch IV, 403 - Slg. Hoboken 2, 516 - BHB C 130/7 - Kat. First print of the the full version; complete set of voices.-

"Cole, John 1792-1848, bookseller and antiquary, of Northampton and Scarborough, was born on 3 Oct. 1792 at Weston Favell in Northamptonshire. He was apprenticed to Mr. W. Birdsall, a bookseller of Northampton, and began his literary career with a History of Northampton and its Vicinity in 1815. About two years later he married Susanna, second daughter of James Marshall of Northampton, and in 1817 purchased for 1,000l. the stock and goodwill of a bookseller at Lincoln. He printed his first Catalogue of Old Books at Lincoln in that year. He brought out a History of Lincoln in 1818, and then seems to have gone to Hull and afterwards to Scarborough, where we find him in 1821 publishing An Ænigmatical Catalogue of Books of Merit, on an entirely new plan. During the next ten years he issued most of his antiquarian and biographical works, many of which relate to Scarborough. He also helped Baker in his History of the County of Northampton. As unfortunate at Scarborough as at his previous dwelling-places, Cole tried Northampton once more, and opened a shop in the market square some time after 1830. He added to his small income by giving lectures on natural philosophy, &c. His literary activity was remarkable. They are usually of small size and tastefully printed and produced. NIAKUNGITOK, George (d. 1825).
ca1825 . In October 1820, Samuel Hadlock Jr. (1792-1829), a whaling captain from Maine, brought onboard his ship "Five Brothers" an Eskimo man from Labrador, and then picked up an Eskimo woman and child about 50 miles further down the coast. Hadlock was in Labrador to obtain a cargo of ice for the West Indies trade, but arranged with the families of the two young Eskimos to take them with him until the following summer. They were initially exhibited in New London, Connecticut, and by his uncle Epps Hadlock in New York and Philadelphia in early 1821 (See Hugh L. Dwelley, "Hadlock's Eskimos in New York," 1821). A recent widower, Samuel Hadlock then left his three children with his sister and sailed for Europe, where he exhibited his "Esquimaux Indians" and "Museum" at country fairs throughout England and Ireland, and then in Hamburg, Leipzig, Berlin, Dresden, Potsdam, Prague, Vienna, Munich, Stuttgart and Strasbourg during the period of 1821-1825. According to a booklet printed to accompany the exhibition, Hadlock's "Museum" contained 77 items, with about equal proportions of North American Indian and Eskimo clothing and ethnological objects; natural history specimens, especially various animal skins, teeth, bones, and various "oddities"; and New Zealand Maori clothing and objects, including a jade hei tiki and a preserved tattooed head. The Eskimo couple originally consisted of 27 year old Niagungitok, baptized George (at the Moravian mission at Hopedale, where he learned to read lnuktitut and speak English), 25 year old Mary Coonahnik, and an infant who died in New Yo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bound in contemporary green polished calf over marbled boards, ruled in gilt, by Henry Young. Gilt tooling on spine. Color faded from spine and from top edge of upper board. Fine condition. Narrative of search for the Northwest Passage through the Hudson Bay; observations on Southampton Island, Eskimos, tides, and compass variations. George Francis Lyon, one of Barrow's favorites, had made a name for himself in the exploration of Africa before serving as commander of the HMS Hecla during William Edward Parry's second Arctic voyage. Thereafter, in the spring of 1824 Lyon was given command of the sluggish and cranky HMS Griper, with orders to winter in Repulse Bay, in northwest Hudson Bay, and then cross Melville Peninsula to explore the northern coast of mainland America. Ice conditions were difficult, however, and he was unable to even reach Repulse Bay, and had to return home that same Fall. He was never given another naval command. ZINDEL, Christian Siegmund
Nuremberg: Campe, 1825. 8vo (172 x 98 mm). [2] leaves, 180 pp. Six etched plates, including frontispiece, by Johann Adam Klein. Wove paper, the plates on thick card paper. Light foxing to the plates. Publisher's illustrated paper boards (soiled, darkened, and rubbed with a couple of losses to paper), bright green edges. Provenance: twentieth-century bookplate of "Dr. Sträguber."*** First Edition of a notoriously rare ice-skating book, beautifully illustrated, and in its original illustrated binding. Ice-skating became popular among the bourgeoisie in Germany in the late 18th century. The earliest German book on ice-skating was by Gerhard Ulrich Anton Vieth, whose anonymously published and extremely rare Ueber das Schlittschuhlaufen appeared in 1790. One or two other publications preceded the present tribute to the pastime, which is the most detailed and elaborately illustrated early work of the genre, and "the first book in any language to describe skating with a partner" (Hines). The author and compiler Zindel approaches the sport, or art, both technically and lyrically. Part one contains instructions for equipment, proper form and technique, safety precautions, exercises, meeting-places, and instructions for ice-dancing in a group. The second part, called an Anhang or Supplement but taking up nearly half of the book, contains 27 literary pieces (previously published). Most are by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, whose 1764 poem "Der Eislauf" (the first poem in the section) helped launch the vogue for ice-skating; others are from Goethe (also a passionate skater), Carl F … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clay, Henry]
[Washington?. 33, [1 blank] pp. Disbound. Light wear, Very Good, contemporary notation on title page. Clay's Letter is dated March 26, 1825, from Washington, at the end. It is his first detailed justification of his conduct in the hotly contested 1824 election, which John Quincy Adams won when Clay threw his support to Adams in the House of Representatives. Clay was charged with engineering a "corrupt bargain" when Adams appointed him Secretary of State, a stepping-stone to the presidency. Adams's Inauguration had occurred only three weeks before the date of Clay's Letter. Clay's long rebuttal of the "unmerited animadversions", when he was merely acting in the "honest and faithful discharge of my public duty," focuses first on his candidacy for the presidency and the events which would throw the four-way election into the House. It is a detailed discussion of the most complicated presidential election in our history. Clay notes with irony that, before he made his choice, "I seemed to be the favourite of every body.I knew that the sunbeams would quickly disappear, after my opinion should be ascertained, and that they would be succeeded by a storm; although I did not foresee exactly how it would burst upon my poor head." He explains his refusal to be bound by the Kentucky Legislature, which had instructed him to vote for Jackson; and evaluates the relative merits of Adams and Jackson, who had won the popular plurality. McCULLOCH, John Ramsay.
Edinburgh: for William and Charles Tait, and Longman & Co, London, 1825. Edinburgh: for William and Charles Tait, and Longman & Co, London,, 1825. with a sketch of the rise and progress of the science. Octavo (218 x 128 mm). Modern tan full levant morocco, contemporary red morocco label reused, flat bands ruled in gilt, central tool to compartments gilt, edges speckled brown. Bound without the half-title and publisher's ads. Faint spotting to endleaves. An excellent copy. First edition of the author's first major work, expanded from his contribution to the 1824 edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, "the first substantive text on political economy to appear in the encyclopaedia" (ODNB). David Ricardo, with whom McCulloch corresponded since he started taking an interest in political economy as a young man, described the article as a "valuable historical sketch" and "clear exposition of all the important principles of the science that you have left nothing for me to wish for" (P. Sraffa and M. H. Dobb (eds.), The Works and Correspondence of David Ricardo, 1951-73, Vol. 9, p. 275). The Principles of Economy enjoyed a wave of popularity soon after publication and went through five editions but was supplanted in the late 1840s by John Stuart Mill's work of the same title. McCulloch's discussion on profit and interest with regards to a cask of wine is still used today to illustrate the labour theory of value: "Suppose, to illustrate the principle, that a cask of new wine, which cost £50, is put into a cellar, and that, at the end of twelve months, it is worth £55, the questio … [Click Below for Full Description]
