CALDECLEUGH, Alexander
Murray, 1825. In a modern fine binding of full blue leather tooled in gold.with raised bands Volume I): [xii], 374pp.; Volume II: [viii], 380pp., 2 folding engraved maps, 9 aquatint plates The frontispiece plate has shadowed onto the title page (see scan) otherwise all plates, maps and the text are in Very Good condition. A beautiful copy of this important work which provided an significant account of Rio De Janerio, both social and economic. 'During most of his travels in South America, Caldcleugh kept a detailed diary in which he recorded a wide range of interesting subjects. Based on these notes, he published a two-volume book in 1825, which was very well received in Britain and even translated into German the following year. Modern Spanish America was relatively unknown to the rest of the world. After independence, British travellers and many others were allowed to visit this 'New World'; they wrote extensively about the continent during the 1810s, 1820s and 1830s. Among the extensive British writing of this time, Caldcleugh's books are considered to be among the finest early descriptions of southern South America. His work contains not only fascinating personal stories but also helpful historic, geographic, statistical and commercial information. During this trip, Caldcleugh collected plants for Kew Gardens, which he sent to A. B. Lambert (1761 1842), including many native South American plants that were unknown in Britain. Indeed, the plant, caldcluvia, was so called in his honour.'. The Hispanic Anglosphere VG+ [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Boston Cummings, Hilliard, & Company 1825. First edition. Tall 8vo, in fine full antique tree calf, the spine with bands ruled in gilt separating the compartments and with a red morocco label trimmed with gilt chains and lettered in gilt. viii, 498 pp. A fine and handsome copy, the text extremely fresh and clean with no foxing or spotting, occasional pencil markings in a neat at the outside margins emendating certain paragraphs, the binding firm and strong and attractive with only light evidence of use or age. FIRST EDITION OF THE MEMOIR OF AMERICAN PATRIOT AND SON OF LIBERTY. JOSIAH QUINCY JUN. was also second in a long line of notable and important Bostonians to bear the name. In the years leading up to the American Revolution Josiah Quincy Jun. was a principal spokesman for the Sons of Liberty and served as John Adams' co-counsel during the trials of the soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre. A gifted orator, in 1766 he delivered an impassioned address in English "on liberty," or as others would recall it, on the meaning of being "a patriot," at Harvard's commencement upon receiving his Masters Degree. The speech caught the attention of Boston's patriot leadership, and by 1767, Quincy was contributing regularly to Samuel Adams' Boston Gazette, initially writing under the name "Hyperion". His essays were charged with colourful rhetoric denouncing British oppression. Josiah Jun.'s son, the author of this memoir, was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mayor of Boston, and President of Harvard University from 1829-1845. 1825. Any doubt or question: just shoot us a mail or call us, we speak English! We can provide you with a full description of each map and print in English, French or Spanish. Delineado a color realizado a mano. Se in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seltene erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Henze V, 327. - 010

HANMER-CLAYBROOKE, Comtesse d' ; [ BALLET DE LA CHENARDIERE, Charlotte Jeanne Camille ]
The dying mother to her infant".
