BONAPARTE (Louis);
[Click Below for Full Description]

WINCKELMANN, Johann (Joachim).
Donaueschingen, Verlag deutscher Classiker, 1825-35. 8vo (Text) u. Großfolio (Tafeln). Halbleinen d. Zeit (Text, berieben u. bestoßen) u. Originalpappband (Tafeln, fleckig u. bestoßen, Rückenbezug mit kl. Fehlstellen). Kleinere Schriften, enthält u.a. - 2. Schriften über die herculanischen Entdekungen. 1758-1763. Mit Beilage. - 3.-6. Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums. 1763-1768. - 7./8. Denkmale der Kunst des Altertums. - 9. TANESSE, Jacques.
In New York: Charles Del Vecchio & New Orleans: Pierre Maspero, 1825. Single sheet, float mounted and framed (20 3/8 x 32 2/8 inches; frame size: 31 4/8 x 43 6/8 inches). Fine engraved plan of New Orleans by William Rollinson after Tanesse (some discreet marginal repairs). Second edition, first issued in 1817, reprinted to celebrate the visit of General Lafayette to New Orleans, and with marked changes, showing the sixty-foot triumphal arch which was built in wood and canvas and erected at the Place d'Armes for the occasion. The arch was designed by city architect Joseph Pilié and painted to resemble marble by Jean Baptiste Fogliardi, the scene painter for the Théâtre d'Orléans. Another significant alteration is Tanesse's addition of a tower to the cathedral. The original rectangular format was adapted with the clever device of a lunette breaking the top of the border to accommodate the height of the new spire. This detailed engraving is an aerial projection from a height distant enough to give a good idea of the city's crescent shape. John Reps, Cornell University professor emeritus and cartographic scholar, calls Tanesse's work "one of the finest examples of 19th-century American urban cartography." By August 1817, the map was available in New Orleans when Tanesse presented two copies to the city, one for the mayor's office, the other for the council chamber. The city's various states of progress in its expansion are superbly charted in the plan's neat grid layout, which is accentuated by large open places given over to public plazas and buildings. Tanesse also includes t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Volume 4. – pp. 238. Volume 5. – pp. 243. Volume 6. – pp. 251. A very scarce title. First editions in an extraordinary and splendid half morocco with 3 wide raised bands and delightful gilt and ink tooling. Some foxing. Many of Ducange’s novels were banned due to their controversial morals and politics resulting in several periods in prison and the scarcity of his titles. Victor Henri-Joseph Brahain du Cange (or Ducange) (November 24, 1783 – October 15, 1833) was a French novelist and dramatist, born at the Hague, where his father was secretary to the French embassy. Dismissed from the civil service at the Restoration, Ducange became one of the favourite authors of the liberal party, and owed some part of his popularity to the fact that he was fined and imprisoned more than once for his outspokenness. He was imprisoned for six months for an article in his journal Le Diable rose, ou le petit courrier de Lucifer (1822). For Valentine (1821), in which the royalist excesses in the south of France were pilloried, he was again imprisoned; and after the publication of Hélène ou l'amour et la Guerre (1823), he took refuge for some time in Belgium. Ducange wrote numerous plays and melodramas, among which the most successful were Marco Loricot, ou le petit Chouan de 1830(1836), and Trente ans, ou la vie d'un joueur (1827), in which Frédérick Lemaître found one of his best parts. LARREY (Dominique-Jean)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Lord Braybrooke Richard
Henry Colburn, New Burlington Street, 1825. Condition: Very Good +. A handsome 1st edition of Samuel Pepys' famous diary, which remains one of the great sources for the study of Restoration England. Complete in 2 thick quarto volumes, with 12 engraved plates, including a folding map. Bound in a gilt-edged full leather (dark-brown calf), with ornate gilt-titling and tooling at the compartments. Boards lightly rubbed at edges and corners, very light foxing --and just a bit of offsetting opposite the plates-- thruout the text. Both volumes tight, well-preserved and solidly VG+. This seminal diary, which Pepys wrote from 1660 to 1669, presents a fascinating picture of the official and upper-class life in Restoration London, with vivid, honest accounts of ordinary as well as great events, including the Plague and the Great Fire of London. The diary went unprinted for more than 150 years after its original composition because of its coded shorthand. For 3 years, the Rev. John Smith painstakingly deciphered the diary, all the while unaware that Pepys had taken his code from Thomas Shelton's "Tutor to Tachygraphy" (1642), which sat only a few shelves above the diary in Pepys' library. "It is a document of extraordinary interest, on account both of the light that its sincere narrative throws on the author's own lovable character, and of the vivid picture that it gives of everyday contemporary life, of the administration of the navy, and of the ways of the court". (First edition. A German translation was published in Weimar in 1827-8 and in Jena in 1834. In 1821 Buckingham published Travels in Palestine which described the first part of his voyage overland from Egypt to India in 1816-17 via Palestine, Syria and Mesopotamia. The Arab Tribes describes the portion of his journey from Nazareth to Aleppo and Damascus, and it also contains an appendix refuting the charges of plagiarism which were levelled against Travels in Palestine. Buckingham had been travelling extensively in the Middle East from about 1810 as a sea captain and merchant. After he settled in India he established the Calcutta Journal a publication critical of the East India Company. In 1819, in one of the early issues of this journal, he published an account, together with correspondence, of John Lewis Burckhardt whom he had met in Cairo during the winter of 1813-14. Broadside; Murder; Rawlin, Stephen; Hardy, Thomas
1825. Gatehead: W. Stephenson, Printer, 1825. Not Recorded by OCLC or COPAC [Broadside]. [Murder]. Rawlin, Stephen. Hardy, Thomas. A True and Particular Account of a Shocking Murder, Committed on the Body of William Richardson, with an Iron Poker, by Two Pitmen Named Stephen Rawlin and Thomas Hardy, At Bishop Auckland, on Saturday September the 24th, 1825. Gateshead: W. Stephenson, Printer, 1825. 13-1/8" x 6" broadside pasted to 13-1/4" x 8" sheet. Text in single column below headline. Moderate toning, minor edgewear to sheet. A well-preserved copy. $1,250. * The murder appears to have been the result of a brawl in a pub. A few minutes after it began, Rawlin called for help to his comrade Hardy, who smashed Richardson in the head with a large iron poker. They left Richardson for dead and proceeded home. After a long and solemn investigation, the jury returned with a verdict of Wilful Murder. The broadside indicates a pattern of similar crimes. "This is the third Murder that has been committed in the county of Durham within the last three years, under very similar circumstances, in the year 1823, Joseph Spraggon was murdered by Stanwick Newton on a Saturday night, at the door of a Public House, in Middle Rainton- In 1824, Henry Curry was murdered by Thomas Atkinson, on a Saturday night at the door of a Public House, at Birtly.- And in 1825, the above melancholy affair has occurred under the like incidents." This appears to be an unrecorded broadside. No copies listed on COPAC or OCLC.

[Bloxam, Richard]
London: Samuel Leigh, 1825. Second edition of this innovative nineteenth-century set of astronomical cards, issued one year after the first edition, revised to depict additional stars. Each brightly hand-colored card depicts the mythological figures within a constellation, while strategic pinholes indicate the location of the stars, allowing a viewer to visualize their appearance in the sky when the card is held up to a light. (Few copies of Urania's Mirror survive intact, as the cards frequently caught on fire.) A contemporary review in the Weekly Globe declared: "By this elegant and ingenious device, the study of astronomy is rendered not only familiar and amusing, but a knowledge of this sublime science is communicated at a glance more effectually than by a course of lectures." The set depicts 79 constellations in all, with the final card (Hydra, Corvus, Centaurus, et al.) boasting the most on a single card at twelve. Although attributed to "a lady," Urania's Mirror was almost certainly designed by the Reverend Richard Bloxam, assistant master at Rugby School; the images are based on the illustrations in Alexander Jamieson's 1822 Celestial Atlas. A fine set. Complete set of 32 hand-colored engraved cards, measuring 7.75 x 5.5 inches, perforated to indicate position of stars, tissue guard mounted to verso of each card. Housed in original green and yellow card publisher's box with hand-colored pictorial title mounted to lid, engraved pastedowns to sides of box, silk ribbon pull. Various and Jean de La Fontaine; notice by A. C. M. Robert
Paris-Etienne Cabin, 1825. Book. A scarce first edition of the Unpublished Fables of the XIIth, XIIIth and XIVth Centuries and The Fables of de la Fontaine. Preceded with a notice on the Fabulists by A. C. M. Robert to first volume and with illustrated half titles throughout and facsimile letters one of which folds out. First edition. In two volumes complete. In French. Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was the most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is known above all for his Fables, which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions in France, and in French regional languages. According to Flaubert, he was the only French poet to understand and master the texture of the French language before Hugo. The Fables were originally issued in several volumes from 1668 to 1694. Divided into 12 books, there are 239 of the Fables, varying in length from a few lines to some hundred. The first collection of Fables Choisies appearedin 1668, dividing 124 fables into six books over its two volumes. By this time, La Fontaine was 47 and known to readers chiefly as the author of Contes, lively stories in verse, grazing and sometimes transgressing the bounds of contemporary moral standards. The Fables, in contrast, were completely in compliance with these standards. Eight new fables published in 1671 would eventually take their place in books 7-9 of the second collection. Books 7 and 8 appeared in 1678, while 9-11 appeared in 1679. Between 1682 and 1685 a few fables were published dealing with … [Click Below for Full Description]

[?St. Croix: Christianstæd:] Trykt og Udgivet af Elizabeth James, February 22, 1825. A printed broadside, approx. 39 x 24cm., printed to one side only in two columns, text mostly in English, indistinct printing of several letters or words, sometime folded, soiled, edges ragged, some time tipped on to and album leaf. This broadside announces the destructive fire that on February 12th, 1825, ravaged St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies (now part of the United States Virgin Islands). The fire, which reportedly “originated entirely from accident”, laid waste to one third of the town, and its containment required the help of crews from British and American naval ships, and those from merchant ships in the port. The fire spread quickly throughout “North Crownprince’s Quarter”, destroying every house on Frenchman’s Hill. The first column of the broadside describes the fire and its aftermath, the second column comprises a circular from P. v. Scholten, expressing thanks to individuals for their services during the fire. According to a recollection of the episode by a resident of the island, the fire was called by locals ‘Martina’s fire’ after the Curacao woman in whose property the fire had started (Johan Nissen Reminiscences of a 46 Years’ Residence in the Island of St. Thomas, p. 140). The broadside was printed by Elizabeth James, publisher in the 1820s of the islands’ gazette, the Dansk Vestindisk Regierings Avis.

SALVANDY Narcisse.Archille. de
1825. First edition. 8vo. Recent quarter morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt. 81, [1]pp. Paris, Chez Ponthieu, A rare and level-headed contribution to the ongoing debate in France on how to best protect trade. This was written during a turbulent period following the French Revolution, the loss of Haiti, the rise and fall of Napoleon, and the signing of a treaty which obliged France to abolish slavery: all of which had significant effects on the French economy. ?For some time, French merchants had demanded reestablishment of trade with Haiti as a cure for the decline in French foreign trade, while the clandestine trade in coffee and indigo increased between French ports and Haiti. Supporting this position, N.A. de Salvandy, a well-known liberal writer and politician, proposed that reopening trade with Haiti could bolster stagnant French commerce. He reminded his readers that Saint-Domingue had been lost to France for a long time, but the island had never ceased to be fertile? (Kwon). While Salvandy posits that Haiti might become a French protectorate, he stridently opposes the idea of reconquering Haiti for France and writes: ?other than some young publicists . no one would want to go and undertake an expedition two thousand leagues from its shores for a cause that is evidently condemned by fortune. No serious man has proposed it.? (Daut's translation.) The last copy to appear on the market was at Otto Lange in 1923. Sabin, 75867; Daut, Marlene, Tropics of Haiti: Race and the Literary History of the Haitian Revolution, 1789-1865. Liverpool, 2015. p.107; Kwon, Yun Kyoung, … [Click Below for Full Description]
