Henry and Thomas Roscoe [ Compiled By
John Knight & Henry Lacey, London, 1825. This is an impressive 3 volume set, retaining the orginal fresh and clean cloth boards. Whilst this doesn't make them unique, it is very much less common in this original condition. Each volume retains the original paper titl labels to spine. The labels are with tone, the one to Vol III is chipped to the top edge with a small piece absent. Tightly and securely bound, with no hinge weaknesses whatsoever. The pages are excellent, being bright and clean, with only minor evidence of foxing or toning. This barely affects any part of the facing pages, or indeed the edges or margins. I trust that the images to follow will help any potential purchaser of my assessment. 3 v : ill., ports., facsim ; Title-pages engraved, with vignettes. Printer statement on final page: "D. Sidney & Co. printers, .". Includes bibliographical references and index. Vol I: p. folding frontis plate, viii, 3 portrait plates, 287 ; VolII: p.folding frontis plate, iv, 3 portrait plates, 287 ; Vol III: p. folding frontis plate, iv, figure in text of J. Caesar's Seal, 6 portrait plates, 288, Index p.289-304. [ Location: Revolving Bookcase ] Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York: E. Bliss and E. White, 1825. Original quarter sheep and marbled boards [hinges firm, but spine and corners rubbed]. Spine lettered and decorated in gilt. xi, [1 blank] 184 pp. Four plates [one of them folding], as issued. Light to moderate spotting, Good+.This American edition was issued in the same year as the first [London]. "This study, and that of Nicholas Wood (Practical treatise on railroads, London, 1825) constitute the first comprehensive works in railway engineering, having been written and published at the same time as the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the first to carry pay load. In Tredgold's book, the structural features of roadbed, rails, engines, and rolling stock are analyzed, and the evolution of railroads from man-powered and animal-powered to steam-powered is given. Clear and detailed engravings illustrate Stephenson's pre-Rocket engines and others with primitive transmission of power from engine to rail" [Dibner, Heralds of Science 182]. Rink 5836. Thomson 96.

MOORE, Joseph. Eighteen Views taken at & near Rangoon. London, Thomas Clay, [1825].Large Folio. Modern red half morocco over original 19th-century mabled boards; engraved pictorial title (serving as dedication leaf), engraved pictorial subscribers' list with further dedication, 3 lithographic leaves of subscribers, many of which residing in India, 18 magnificent and finely handcoloured aquatint plates; light rubbing to boards; one plate with flawed corner three inches away from printed surface, the initial two leaves with foxing and faint trace of humidity, the plates a little spotted in the margins, images clean and in superb publisher's hand-colouring; provenance: armorial engraved bookplate Newborough inside front cover.First edition, very rare, of this pictorial documentation of the Anglo-Indian capture of Rangoon, as well as presenting the beauty and atmosphere of Burmese scenery, architecture and landscape. The first Anglo-Burmese war of 1824 to 1826 was one of the costliest campaigns ever fought by the Empire. Fifteen thousand British and Indian soldiers, and an unknown, much higher number of Burmese, civilian and soldiers, died, and the finances of the East India Company, to whose directors the work is dedicated, were ruined. The 18 plates are the first large-scale views of Burma, a part of the world pretty unknown to the British. We were unable to find out anything about the clearly very talented artist, Lieutenant Joseph Moore, 89th Foot. - The following year appeared a further series of six views, and there were two text booklets as well. Contemporary Italian paper-covered album containing 30 aquatint plates (image size 140 by 185 mm), finely hand-coloured, occasionally in gouache, green painted wide margins with borders in black, captioned in ink; wear to binding, a few margins with discolouration and light trace of humidity; highly decorative. An unusual, and brightly coloured album of Florentine piazzi, architecture, church interiors, and surroundings, with the aquatints executed by at least two different artists. The fine and precise colouring of a few plates was left unfinished. This and the painted margins seem to suggest that the album, which is of utmost rarity, was actually a prototype produced for a print seller in Florence at the time.#2086749

With two loose manuscript sales receipts dated 1846 and 1870 at rear Recipes in various hands, mainly in ink, some in pencil. Some rubbing to binding. From the Lord Westbury Sale at Sotheby's, part of lot 321. A collection of recipes for patisserie, containing as well a few savory dishes, such as raw marinated fish with olive oil, parsley, nutmeg, salt, pepper and vinegar, pates, and veal ragout. Among the sweet bakery products are several based on recipes from Basle, one mentioning a chef Gaspard Keller from that town, three different preparations of nougat, a recipe for ginger beer, and a pain d'amour. The Pain d'Austerlitz combines amongst other ingredients grated chocolate with lemon zest. The ingredients of the Baton d'Orgeat are reminiscent of those still used in the syrup produced in Italy under the name Orzata. Almonds are highly used, as well as oranges and orange water, lemon zest, and cinnamon. It is intriguing that the longest recipe is that hidden away on pages 69-70 for beer, with the title disguised through the inversion of the word "biere" into mirror writing.#2098189
