RAWLE, William
Philadelphia: H.C. Carey & I. Lea, 1825. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I can provide a link to many more photos. Just ask! 1825 TRUE 1st ed Rawle View of US Constitution Americana Politics Slavery LAW The first authoritative interpretation of the U.S. Constitution! William Rawle, an early American lawyer, wrote one of the most important commentaries on the United States Constitution. Rawle covers a variety of topics related to the Constitution including Presidential powers, state jurisdiction and rights, remarks on Cicero's views on Roman Law, slave trade, personal freedoms, taxation, and the art of making a treaty. In fact, Rawle's views on treating making spurred many important books including Charles Butler's 'Treating Making Power in the United States'. Howes' account of this work is perhaps the most telling of its importance: "First authoritative interpretation, in which was admitted the abstract right of state secession. These views exerted a profound influence on Southern political thought." Allibone notes that this work should be 'carefully read', 'studied or consulted by the English reader', and is 'an excellent work'. Bowdich, Thomas Edward and Sarah
London: George B. Whittaker, 1825. xii,278pp. plus twenty-two plates (four colored, three folding), including frontis. Quarto. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards. 19th-century library stamp on verso of titlepage and several other pages. Some light scattered foxing. Very good. Untrimmed. A very interesting work on Portugal, Madeira, Porto Santo, and northwestern Africa. T.E. Bowdich made three trips to Africa and died there at age thirty-three. His notes for this final expedition covered only the outward voyage to Madeira, and the text was completed by his widow, Sarah Bowdich. She edited his notes, completed the text, and provided all but two of the illustrations. In several cases Mrs. Bowdich actually drew the lithographs, which were then printed by the Hullmandel firm. There is much in the text on botany, zoology, and geology. The plates include coastal and inland views, local costumes, shells, insects, fish, and a plate of linguistic characters. ABBEY 190. COLAS 418. GAY 2983. IBRAHIM-HILMY II, p.382.

Sammtliche Werke Complete 52-volume set. By Christoph Martin Wieland Issued Leipzig, 1825 by Georg Joachim Goschen. Each volume c. 250-300 pp. Most volumes with a engraved frontis= c.45-50 fine plates throughout. Full contemporary green paper covered boards, smooth spines with gilt decoration, devices & black gilt leather labels, owner's name stamped in gilt on red oval morocco labels to front boards, boards outlined in gilt patterns, wonderful engraved frontispieces throughout. The engraved near miniature frontispieces are often charming allegorical images, well executed, richly printed, and are all signed in the plate by the engraver. Attractive, rare, monumental huge set of charming, early-19th century bindings which are utterly unique in shelf appearance. Set shows clear signs of usage, rubbing, small scuffing, light soiling and age, but as the pictures show, still a noble and very handsome looking old set of leather bound books. Textblocks square, tight, clean-moderately toned with some light scattered foxing throughout, which is most often heaviest on the engraved plates. Worthy of any library shelf or museum. Sets like this display character. Slight wear to an old object gives it a modern appeal which we believe exceeds the same item in untouched almost perfect condition. Each volume measures c. 4" W x 5" H. Measures c. 52" W across shelf. (4' 4") [V56] [note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.] Set is priced at $20 a volume. Dès lors ses écrits s'enfuient vers les contrées illuminées. [Chap Book]
Portland: Bailey and Noyes, circa 1825. First edition 15 illustrations 12 mo, publisher's original paper wraps, illustrated. 16 pp. A very well preserved copy This children's book is called a chapbook, a more modern term that derives from the chapmen. Chapmen were pedlars who hawked their goods in towns and villages, and at country fairs. In 1553, Edward VI proclaimed that champmen must be licensed and Chettle, in Kind Hart's Dreame (1592) wrote that "'Chapmen are able to spred more pamphlets...then all the booksellers in town.'" Although they sold other wares, too, they always had cheap booklets, sometimes ballad sheets which eventually assumed the familiar form af a miniature booklet, with a paper cover thatusually had a picture. Even Shakespeare, in Henry IV, mentioned the chapmen as did Urquhart's Rabelais in 1653. With the growth of small printers, miniature editions of old favourites could be printed. While chapbooks were ostensibly designed to help children learn how to read, they often broached adult subjects and were the source of entertainment in families and villages. This particular book is for a small child, describing and defining familiar objects and things such as what a chair or steamboat is.

ANONYME
Portrait in pencil of Count Gustav Adolf Wilhelm of Ingenheim (1789-1855).Son of William II of Prussia, the Count of Ingenheim was a great lover of art and an avid collector. He stayed several times in Italy between 1822 and 1833 and took part in the acquisition of Italian works of art for the Royal Museum of Berlin (today Altes Museum ) which was born under the reign of his half-brother, Frédéric -Guillaume III. He holds art fairs in Rome and Berlin, and supports painters and scholars (including the German archaeologist Eduard Gerhard), making use of his relations with the Prussian crown. He has maintained and promoted young painters of the post-Napoleonic era, such as Johann Erdmann Hummel, Aloys Hirt, Christian Daniel Rauch and Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and had his portrait painted by a member of his circle of artists, probably during his Italian stay. T. Blake.
London W. Sams, 1825. Hand coloured aquatint, 520 by 700mm (20½ by 27½ inches), some scattered, light foxing, only really evident in middle background, otherwise still very bright. Third state, the first being produced in 1818, hand-coloured aquatint with etched outline. A large and important depiction of an exhibition sparring match held in the Fives Court, in London's Little St. Martin's Street, a tennis and fives court hired for such events, the participants, unlike a regular, bare-knuckle bout, being fitted with gloves ("mittens" or "mufflers"). The contestants shown were Ned Turner, "The Out-and-Outer", who had killed a man in the ring, serving time for manslaughter, and Jack Randall, "The Prime Irish Lad", unbeaten throughout 12 years of ring activity. The two had fought an epic fight in 1818, which Randall won to become the Lightweight champion. A large number of famous pugilists are pictured in the audience, not always accurately; Jem Belcher, the famed champion and the first real sporting celebrity in the modern sense, is shown, although he was dead! It is also a fair portrait of "The Fancy" as the mix of often raffish sporting professionals and upper class spectators, including nobility, came to be known. Snelgrove, British Sporting and Animal Prints, p. 48-9, colour plate 5; Siltzer, pp. 319, 320, 325; Wilder, Sporting Prints, p. 178, colour plate p. 179; Magriel, The Ring and the Glove, pp. 17-18

Giovanni Boccaccio
London: William Pickering, 1825. Collated: Complete in three volumes with the 10 Stothard Plates. First edition with an introduction by Ugo Foscolo (or Niccolò Foscolo), a noted Italian writer and poet. Scarce. Giovanni Boccaccio was an Italian author and poet, a friend, student, and correspondent of Petrarch, an important Renaissance humanist and the author of a number of notable works including 'The Decameron', 'On Famous Women', and his poetry in the Italian vernacular. Boccaccio is particularly notable for his dialogue, of which it has been said that it surpasses in verisimilitude that of virtually all of his contemporaries, since they were medieval writers and often followed formulaic models for character and plot. 'The Decameron', with the subtitle of 'Prince Galehaut' is a 14th-century medieval allegory by Giovanni Boccaccio, told as a frame story encompassing 100 tales by ten young people. Boccaccio probably began composing the work in 1350, and finished it in 1351 or 1353. The various tales of love in 'The Decameron' range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit, practical jokes, and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary import, it documents life in 14th-century Italy. CONDITION In original publisher's cloth bindings with paper labels to the spines. Externally, rather worn. Corners are bumped on all three volumes and boards are stained. Spines are chipped and the back strips are lifting. Front board to volume I detached, with first four leaves. Front hinge failed to volume III. Internally, binding is loosening in places.
