Anonymous but probably P. C. L. Janet]
Paris, Louis Janet, ca. 1825. Oblong 8vo (19.0 x 12.3 cm). iv, 146, [i] pp.; Title page with large, engraved and finely hand-coloured vignette, 12 finely engraved, tissue-guarded plates with contemporary hand-colouring. Contemporary quarter polished calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt bands and title, and blind tooled vignettes. A wonderfully preserved copy of a very rare, delightfully illustrated satire on human behaviour, humorously compared with the behaviour of monkeys. OCLC reports only six copies, of which only one in France (Bibliothèque nationale), one in Spain, and four in American libraries - the one in the Morgan Library & Museum being incomplete, and none reported to be more than partly hand-coloured. The author is unknown, and, given the satire hidden behind the jolly illustrations, perhaps wisely remained anonymous. However, it seems reasonable to assume that the publisher, [Pierre Claude] Louis Janet (1788-1840) was the author, as he was known as a writer, in particular of works published by himself. Former owner's name pencilled in an old hand on the front free endpaper recto. Some (mostly light) rubbing to the boards, occasional light, marginal thumbing, a few small smudges, but generally very clean. The colouring is bright, careful and detailed. Only one auction record - in 1907. Not in any major bibliography, we could find. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Richard Henry Lee
Philadelphia : H.C. Carey and I. Lea, 1825. 299, 238 pp. Hardcover in marbled boards and cloth tape spine. Two volumes bound into one. SIGNED by A.L. Lee on ffep. More information about A.L. Lee below. Howes L214. Gephart 13819. R.H. Lee served as President of Congress, proposed the committee of correspondence, and was the first Senator from Virginia. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail. Albert Lindley Lee (January 16, 1834 - December 13, 1907) was a lawyer, Kansas State Supreme Court Judge, and Union general in the American Civil War. Albert Lee was born in Fulton, New York. His parents were Moses Lee and Ann (Case) Lee. Lee was educated at Union College, and graduated in 1853.[1] He was admitted into the bar and practiced in New York. In 1858, Lee moved to Kansas. When he arrived he became one of the founders of the Elwood Free Press.[1] In 1859, he was elected a district judge, and when the American Civil War began Lee was serving as a justice on the Kansas Supreme Court.[2] At the outbreak of the Civil War, Lee joined the Union Army. Lee became a major in the 7th Kansas Cavalry, in October 1861. He was promoted to colonel of the regiment and took part in Henry W. Halleck's capture of Corinth, Mississippi.[1] Shortly after the fall of that city, Lee commanded the 2nd Brigade in the Cavalry Division of the Army of the Mississippi and participated in the battle of Corinth. On November 29, 1862 he received a promotion to brigadier general in the Volunteer Army.[2] He continued leading caval … [Click Below for Full Description]

[LA PEROUSE] SANQUIRICO, Alessandro, after, engraved by Carolina LOSE.
Milan: Autumn 1825. Aquatint with original hand colouring, 340 x 390 mm, mounted and handsomely framed. Atmospheric coloured aquatint depicting an evocative scene from the staging of the "Ballet-Pantomime" based on the disappearance of La Pérouse in the Pacific. Between the complete disappearance of the expedition in 1788 and the discovery of relics in 1827, just a couple of years after this performance, the mystery had captivated Europe. (Famously Louis XVI is said to have repeated on his way to the scaffold the question that he had been asking for months: ''Is there any news of M. de La Pérouse?"). The disappearance inspired various highly imaginative performances or visualisations, and this scene was evidently one of the highlights from a very successful "pantomime" much performed in England and here being toured in northern Italy. As the caption notes the Naufragio was staged at the Teatrico Lirico in Milan (known as the Canobbiana until the 1890s). It starred the English actor William Barrymore (1759-1830). His European tour is not noted in the biography provided by the wonderful Garrick Club archives which mention his appearances in 'musical pieces and comedies. He was also a leading actor at the Haymarket Theatre for many summer seasons. Critical reports describe him as an awkward performer, who acted with stiff knees, and had trouble retaining his lines; but at least one friendly source praised his judgment, noted his improvement over the years and suggested that he was industrious and steady as a second-rate actor. The last several years of his career he spent in t … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Cuvier was considered by the public to be a bit of a wizard, a man who had brought to life animals that had long since become extinct... Cuvier knew how to make great strides in studying these creatures and could endow this study with new accuracy. His famous paleontological reconstructions had the living being as their point of departure... before witnesses he removed from a stone block the marsupial bones of a small opossum fossil, bones whose existence he had surmised on the basis of the conformation of the visible part of the skeleton. As early as 1804 Cuvier had the idea of reconstructing the musculature of extinct animals from imprints left by the muscles on the bones; then he merely had to imagine the skin over the muscles and the animal was practically brought back to life" "In the 1790s Cuvier began publishing a series of papers on fossil … [Click Below for Full Description]

[FREYCINET VOYAGE: HAWAII] PELLION, Alphonse, after, engraved by Adrian MIGNERET.
Paris: circa 1825. Early black-and-white proof engraving before addition of colour; manuscript colour notes in ink, bold ink note at top referring to an original drawing. Freycinet's annotated proof of Alphonse Pellion's engraved triple-portrait of Hawaiian dignitaries encountered during the visit of the voyage of the Uranie to the Hawaiian islands in August 1819. The portraits depict, from left to right, "one of the principal chiefs of Oahu"; Kiaïmoukou or "George Cox", the Royal governor of Maui; and "one of Kiaïmoukou's principal officers". More properly known as George Cox Kahekili Ke'eaumoku II, the governor of Maui had taken the English names of George and Cox to honour, respectively, the king of England and a sea captain who had befriended him. Hawaiians knew him as 'Pu?u Nui ("Great Pile"). The name refers to the rotting piles of excess goods outside his storehouses. In the true Hawaiian double entendre, the name also accurately described his physique: members of his family were known to be enormous' (Samuel Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, 1961). Freycinet has boldly annotated the proof engraving with colour notes in his familiar ink notation. The hat at left needs to be depicted as "chapeau de paille"; Ke'eaumoku's robe should be "draperies rouge or bleu"; and the officer at right is to have his hair ribbon "bleu clair", his "gilet" black, and his neckerchief to be coloured. Generally for the colours he notes "N.B. pour la couleur des figures consultez le dessin ci-joint". The plate as published follows these colour notes; it appears as plate 82 in the 1825 Atlas … [Click Below for Full Description]

LYCETT, Joseph
London: J. Souter, 1825. Three plates with some localised oxidisation; marbled endpapers strengthened at inner hinges.. Oblong folio, a tall copy with the pictorial lithographed title untrimmed, 48 coloured aquatint views after drawings by Joseph Lycett, the colouring generally very bright and of notably high quality, two engraved maps (one folding), with descriptive letterpress text, later neat owner's signature; an excellent copy in a very attractive Riviere binding of full tan polished calf gilt, in a matching full fine calf leather case, ornately gilt. First edition of the great Australian plate book, one of the earliest and most important collections of antipodean landscapes. This was a landmark in the development of Australian illustrated books: Lycett's charming, highly-coloured views of New South Wales and Tasmania are justly famous today and the book as a whole provides a remarkable visual record of Macquarie's Australia. Memorably described as 'an enticing book' by the late Edmund Capon in an ABC documentary on the "Art of Australia", Capon commented that 'when these pictures were first seen in Britain, it was something of a revelation, a little bit like receiving postcards from another planet.' Not only does the book offer an historical snapshot of New South Wales and Tasmania in the early decades of settlement, but especially from the point of view of colonial architecture, it is a collection of remarkable importance. Lycett's incomparable plates record some of the colony's most important houses and country seats, and provide an invaluable contextual record of … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAGIC AND CONJURING
France: 1825. An Early French Magic Blow Book [MAGIC AND CONJURING]. [Magical Blow Book/Flip Book]. [France: n.d.c.a. 1825]. Small octavo (7 3/8 x 5 1/4 inches; 187 x 133 mm). This copy in contemporary blue marbled wrappers. Internally all plates very clean and bright. A beautiful copy of a magical blow book or flip book (also known as a magic coloring book). This type of trick is considered the oldest example of a "manufactured prop" to be used for magic. It works by a series of small notches, or incisions in the fore-margin to create tabs, (five tabs in this case) and depending on where the magician places their thumb, they flip the leaves of a certain group, revealing one set of plates. Then with a movement of the finger placement, a new set of plates will be revealed. With two sets of twenty-eight plates, complete with a total of 56 plates. The plates are all beautifully hand-colored with sharp detail, and each picture has a caption in French. The plates include a merchant, a magic lantern, soliders on horseback, birds, a man with a dog, a pagoda, a windmill, a goose, a nest, a drummer and a piper, an elephant and a camel, a church and a bridge, a and a dancing bear among others. For Thomas Boys, 1825. 12mo in 6s. 180pp. With engraved frontispiece and extra-engraved title, both depicting contemporary images relating to the Bubble. Uncut, in original publisher's attractive printed boards. Rubbed and a trifle marked, with loss to head of spine. FFEP torn away. Armorial bookplate of James Whatman to FEP. An unsophisticated copy of the second edition, extended with the addition of some 37 pages of additional appendices, of a timely examination, published in the year of the repeal of the 1720 Bubble Act, and of the first modern financial crisis, of the delusional speculation that accompanied the remarkable growth in value of stock of the South Sea Company in the early eighteenth century. First published in the same year, also by Boys, the anonymous The South sea bubble, and the Numerous Fraudulent Projects to which it gave rise in 1720 provides a potted history of the Bubble and reprints eight contemporary satirical verses on the matter, alongside legal opinions, a reprinting of an 1825 London Magazine article, 'Bubbles', and lists of the numerous loans and joint-stock companies launched in 1824-5. In so doing, the author leaves little to the imagination in drawing a parallel between fervent contemporary financial speculation and that of the South Sea delusion ju … [Click Below for Full Description]

George Sinclair
London: James Ridgeway, 1825. Very Good: Gorgeous Illustrations Intact: wonderful exploration of British natural history. George Sinclair was a botanist; in this work, he is exploring the nutritional value of various grasses as animal fodder through comparison of their water-soluble components. Originally published in folio form with cuttings of the grasses mentioned, this is the second edition and is profusely illustrated with prints of the various grasses in color. The study was instituted by the Duke of Bedford while recuperating from ill-health and done with the assistance of various others including Sir Humphrey Davies. The illustrations are just stunning both in detail and the accuracy of approach. Filled with tables and comparisons, this is a great historical document detailing grasses or "weeds" that were cultivated in Great Britain to aid in the feeding of farm animals. Prints signed variously by "C. Hullmandel", or "E.D. Smith, del and A Bailey Sculp". Please do not hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures. Very Good Condition: 4to, leather spine with marble boards; spine is grass green with gilt bands bracketing the title on a brown background with gilt lettering. Re-bound. Some age appropriate discoloration to the pages along with some shadowing, specifically of the title page due to age and ink composition. Pencil marks with occasional marginalia. General Sir John Doyle (1756-1834), was one of the four sons of Charles Doyle of Bramblestown, Ireland. A graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, he served with the British army in the United States. When the Civil War ended there in 1784, he returned to Ireland where he was elected Member of Parliament for Mullingar and proved himself an eloquent speaker in the pre-Union, Irish House of Commons. Sir John raised the famous 87th Regiment in 1794 to serve in the Netherlands. He served as a brigadier general with Abercrombie in Egypt in 1800, distinguished himself, and was made a baronet in 1805, and a full general in 1819. At one time he was Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales. When he retired he was appointed Governor of Guernsey where his able administration, assisted by a nephew, also John Doyle, is commemorated by an impressive column. In this speech Doyle addresses a court convened in the London headquarters of the East India Company to defend and eulogise his life-long friend Lord Hastings (1754-1826), recently retired from his high … [Click Below for Full Description]

LYON, George Francis
London: John Murray, 1825. 1825 Arctic Exploration Private Journal of George Lyon Parry Eskimos IllustratedGeorge Francis Lyon was a 19th-century British naval officer who made his name keeping journals on his African and Arctic voyages. His private journals, particularly of his Arctic exploration with William Parry, became highly influential to later expeditions to those seeking the Northwest Passage encountering Eskimo Indians.According to Field,"Almost the entire volume is devoted to the narration of the peculiarities of the Aborigines of the Arctic regions. Captain Lyon's curiosity led him to observe with great attention, the habits of life, and traits of character of the different tribes of Esquimaux, which his humanity, and good management attracted to his winter quarters. They built their villages near his ships, and permitted a closer familiarity, than any other of the Arctic voyagers was able to attain. His narrative, therefore, abounds with incidents of their intercourse, and curious anecdotes of Esquimaux life."Item number: #6306Price: $750LYON, George FrancisThe private journal of Captain G F Lyon, of HMS Hecla, during the recent voyage of discovery under Captain ParryLondon : John Murray, 1825.Details: · Collation: Complete with all pageso [xi], 468o Illustrated with 7 plates; folding map;· References: Lowndes 1422; Sabin 42853; Arctic Bibliography 10531; Field 961;· Language: English· Binding: Leather; tight and secure· Size: ~ 8.5in X 5.5in (21.5cm x 14cm)Our Guarantee:Very Fast. STEIGER, Johann Georg:
Vienna, 1825. 54/54 playing cards. Coloured etching. The earliest known example of an Industrie und Glück tarot was published in Vienna in 1815. Our deck bears the Austrian tax stamp from 1825 and is therefore a very early example of this Austro-Hungarian tarot deck, where the trump cards bear the designs of rural life with different national costumes. Around seven different versions of this deck were once made but the present pack doesn't correspond to any other deck we could find. Johann Georg Steiger (1800-1855) was an Austrian cardmaker between 1822 and 1853. He died childless. Playing cards by him are seldom on the market. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1550

Cruikshank, George and Robert, Illus.
London: John Fairburn et al. First edition, 1825-1826. 3 volumes, tall 8vo, xvi, 448 pp. xvi, 448 pp, xvi, 448 pp. Contemporary half gilt tooled calf with brown calf spine labels, marbled boards, text in double columns, 3 engraved frontispieces by George Cruikshank, 3 added engraved titles (a bit foxed), 84 woodcuts (24 by George, 57 by Robert), with the rarely encountered first state of the frontispiece to first volume, which was altered after a very few copies were issued -- see Cohn no. 820. Very good, light rubbing along joints, tiny chip to head of spine of third volume, odd whitening to the gilt work along spines -- treated with some anti-acidification product we suspect, but the old owner of these books is deceased so we are left in the dark. Good.
