1825. James Madison Signed Membership Form as President of American Colonization Society A rare blank membership certificate, signed in advance by the Society's President. It would have conferred a life membership in the controversial American Colonization Society, which advocated gradual manumission of slaves and colonization of freed blacks to Liberia. Signed membership certificates from the Society are relatively rare. Only four have appeared in major auction records in the last 30 years. According to the Library of Congress, "Selling life memberships was a standard fund-raising practice of benevolent societies such as the American Colonization Society. At thirty dollars each, the memberships were a popular gift for ministers. In 1825, one of the agents who sold the certificates in New England estimated that 'not less than $50,000 have in this way been poured into the treasury of the Lord.'" This is a superb artifact of antebellum America. It marks the commitment of the "Father of the Constitution" to a solution to the race dilemma that would be castigated today, but which was moderate for its time. JAMES MADISON. Document Signed. "Office of the Colonization Society." Washington, [ca. 1833-1836]. With Society's seal engraved at bottom center (a ship sailing towards Liberia, with Latin motto "Lex in Tenebris" - light amid darkness). 1 p., 8¼ x 11⅛ in. [SOUTH SEA BUBBLE]
[Economics] ~ SOUTH SEA BUBBLE REVISITED IN 1825 [SOUTH SEA BUBBLE] The south sea bubble, and the Numerous Fraudulent Projects to which it gave rise in 1720, historically detailed as a beacon to the unwary against modern schemes (enumerated in an appendix) equally visionary and nefarious London. For Thomas Boys, 1825. 12mo in 6s. 180pp. With engraved frontispiece and extra-engraved title, both depicting contemporary images relating to the Bubble. Uncut, in original publisher's attractive printed boards. Rubbed and a trifle marked, with loss to head of spine. FFEP torn away. Armorial bookplate of James Whatman to FEP. An unsophisticated copy of the second edition, extended with the addition of some 37 pages of additional appendices, of a timely examination, published in the year of the repeal of the 1720 Bubble Act, and of the first modern financial crisis, of the delusional speculation that accompanied the remarkable growth in value of stock of the South Sea Company in the early eighteenth century. First published in the same year, also by Boys, the anonymous The South sea bubble, and the Numerous Fraudulent Projects to which it gave rise in 1720 provides a potted history of the Bubble and reprints eight contemporary satirical verses on the matter, alongside legal opinions, a reprinting of an 1825 London Magazine article, 'Bubbles', and lists of the numerous loans and joint-stock companies launched in 1824-5. In so doing, the author leaves little to the imagination in drawing a parallel between fervent contemporary financial speculation and that of the South Sea delusion ju … [Click Below for Full Description]

Joseph Chitty (1775-1841) was an English lawyer and legal writer, author of some of the earliest practitioners' texts and founder of an important dynasty of lawyers. He practised as a special pleader under the bar for some years before his call to the bar, which took place at the Middle Temple on 28 June 1816. He enjoyed an enormous practice, and trained a great number of the most eminent lawyers, and poured forth a series of standard practitioners' books. His learning and his memory were alike extraordinary, and although inclining to excessive technicality he did more than perhaps any man of his time to facilitate the study of the law. An illness in 1833 withdrew him from practice.

Joseph Ritson
London: Payne and Foss, 1825. Published 22 years after the author's death, Ritson's Life of King Arthur combines an impressive degree of knowledge regarding early Arthurian materials together with an unsentimental and rigourous scepticism, which placed much of the Arthurian legend as the invention or adaptation of Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century. Despite this, Ritson firmly asserts that King Arthur was a real historical figure. The late 18th and early 19th centuries saw a rapid increase of public interest in King Arthur following two centuries of relative obscurity, with Ritson's study offering a dispassionate, scholarly analysis of the historicity of the figure. Lacy, New Arthurian Encyclopedia, p. 404. Textually Very Good, front inner hinge broken, ex library bookplate at front pastedowns, envelope at rear, some pages with blind stamp. "Cuvier was considered by the public to be a bit of a wizard, a man who had brought to life animals that had long since become extinct... Cuvier knew how to make great strides in studying these creatures and could endow this study with new accuracy. His famous paleontological reconstructions had the living being as their point of departure... before witnesses he removed from a stone block the marsupial bones of a small opossum fossil, bones whose existence he had surmised on the basis of the conformation of the visible part of the skeleton. As early as 1804 Cuvier had the idea of reconstructing the musculature of extinct animals from imprints left by the muscles on the bones; then he merely had to imagine the skin over the muscles and the animal was practically brought back to life" "In the 1790s Cuvier began publishing a series of papers on fossil … [Click Below for Full Description]

Istanbul and other places (please see the description). The archive includes: The Secret Early Archives of the Ottoman Public Debt Administration, The Archives of the project to link-up the Rumelian Railway, leading to the completion of the line for The Orient Express, The Papers concerning the French-led bid for the Anatolian Railway (later the Baghdad Railway), Important Archives concerning the Régie, the Ottoman Tobacco Monopoly. Introduction / Executive Summary: The present archive represents one of the most historically important, high quality and coherent collections concerning the economic and transportation history of the Ottoman Empire to ever appear. These are the papers of Gabriel Aubaret (1825 - 1894), an esteemed French diplomat who from 1881 to 1892 played a central role in three of the pillars of the Ottoman economy: The Ottoman Public Debt Administration (OPDA); the empire’s first major railroads (the Rumelian Railway and the Anatolian Railway); and the Régie, the imperial tobacco monopoly. As the founding President of the OPDA, he had a crucial role in stabilizing the Ottoman economy following a period of extreme turmoil, as well as spearheading the completion of the railway system that would carry The Orient Express directly to Constantinople for the first time. That Gabriel Aubaret is not better known today beyond niche circles is largely since the majority of his papers have (until now) been missing, and vital information on his life and career has therefore not been properly explored and disseminated by scholars and writers. Moreover, by the 1880s, Auba … [Click Below for Full Description]

London W. Sams, 1825. Hand coloured aquatint, 520 by 700mm (20½ by 27½ inches), some scattered, light foxing, only really evident in middle background, otherwise still very bright. Third state, the first being produced in 1818, hand-coloured aquatint with etched outline. A large and important depiction of an exhibition sparring match held in the Fives Court, in London's Little St. Martin's Street, a tennis and fives court hired for such events, the participants, unlike a regular, bare-knuckle bout, being fitted with gloves ("mittens" or "mufflers"). The contestants shown were Ned Turner, "The Out-and-Outer", who had killed a man in the ring, serving time for manslaughter, and Jack Randall, "The Prime Irish Lad", unbeaten throughout 12 years of ring activity. The two had fought an epic fight in 1818, which Randall won to become the Lightweight champion. A large number of famous pugilists are pictured in the audience, not always accurately; Jem Belcher, the famed champion and the first real sporting celebrity in the modern sense, is shown, although he was dead! It is also a fair portrait of "The Fancy" as the mix of often raffish sporting professionals and upper class spectators, including nobility, came to be known. Snelgrove, British Sporting and Animal Prints, p. 48-9, colour plate 5; Siltzer, pp. 319, 320, 325; Wilder, Sporting Prints, p. 178, colour plate p. 179; Magriel, The Ring and the Glove, pp. 17-18

(Nr. 218 vom 12. Switzerland travelogue]. Bockelberg, Heinrich Friedrich Philipp von, Prussian civil servant, later diplomat (1802-1857).
Austria/Italy/Switzerland, summer of 1825. 8vo. Title page, 308 closely written, unnumbered pp. With a total of 11 pretty washed ink drawings (occasionally raised in opaque white), 1 pencil sketch, and 20 plates of dried flowers. Contemp. marbled boards. Unpublished, hitherto unknown diary of a three-month summer journey by stage and foot, undertaken by the 23-year-old Heinrich von Bockelberg together with his 31-year-old brother Friedrich Adolph and (as far as Vienna) Friedrich's wife Friederike. Like many contemporaries, the Bockelbergs were inspired by Johann Gottfried Ebel's widely received 1793 guidebook "Anleitung, die Schweiz zu bereisen" ("The Traveller's Guide Through Switzerland"), and planned a great walking tour through Switzerland that was also to take them to Austria and the Northern Adriatic. Their extensive travelogue begins with a description of their coach journey to Vienna (via Karlsruhe and Silesia). Here they stay for more than a week; the journal contains an extesive account of the city. Travelling via Graz and Trieste (where they stay longer than desired), the brothers reach Venice, which they spend the last week of July sightseeing. Early August sees them in Milan, before they finally leave Lake Maggiore and Domodossola behind and enter Switzerland via the Simplon, exploring the Yesellen Gorge and the Valais. The much-anticipated mountain hikes strike them as unexpectedly rustic. Journeying via Vevey, Neufchatel, and Solothurn, they reach Berne in late August, then proceed to Grindelwald and Meyringen (with a close description of the Reichenbach Fall … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rome 1825, 9,9x13cm, une feuille sous marie-louise. - Original portrait in pencil of Henry of Prussia (1781-1846), signed WW , 1824, Rome Pencil portrait of Prince Henry of Prussia (Heinrich Friedrich Karl), son of King William II of Prussia, born in December 1781 and died in November 1846. General of the army at the time of the Quadruple Alliance against Napoleon, he lives in Berlin after The peace of 1814. Fragile health, he obtains from his brother King Frederick William III to go to Italy to recover, and settles in Rome in 1819 before falling seriously ill. Prince Henry was nevertheless seen in society during the first years of his stay, where he supported Italian artists, one of whom made this portrait in pencil in 1824. He died some twenty years later in Rome After spending the rest of his life recluded on the first floor of a house in via del Corso.

The opera "was Meyerbeer's most successful, as well as his last, opera for an Italian stage. The part of Armando was written for the castrato Giovanni Battista Velluti, which makes the work noteworthy as the last major opera with a role for that voice type. Following its Venetian première, Il crociato took other houses by storm: within a little over a year productions were mounted in Florence, Trieste, Padua, Parma and London. The work then served as Meyerbeer's entrée to Paris, where it was first performed at the Théâtre Italien on 25 September 1825 with the soprano Giuditta Pasta in the role of Armando and Nicholas Levasseur as Aladino."
