1825. Collection of twenty-four hand-colored 19th century lotto or bingo cards detailing the most relevant events from Napoleon's military career, each card with 15 bingo numbers occupying spaces in a large capital letter "N" for Napoleon, the events depicted include the Battle of Marengo, Napoleon with Commander Kléber, the French army riding triumphantly into Verona, distributing Legions of Honor at the camp at Boulogne, Napoleon being crowned Emperor, the entry into Vienna, his second marriage to Marie Louise, the Russian campaign, the siege of Toulon, the Battle of Waterloo, and Napoleon's death, among many others. The game of "lotto" has more in common with what we today think of as bingo than with a modern lottery system. The history of the game can be traced back to 1530 and the invention of an Italian game called "Lo Giuoco del Lotto d'Italia". The game was introduced to France in the 1770s and Germany in the 1800s. In the 19th century it was often used as a child's educational game to help students learn math, spelling, history, or geography.

His famous paleontological reconstructions had the living being as their point of departure... before witnesses he removed from a stone block the marsupial bones of a small opossum fossil, bones whose existence he had surmised on the basis of the conformation of the visible part of the skeleton. As early as 1804 Cuvier had the idea of reconstructing the musculature of extinct animals from imprints left by the muscles on the bones; then he merely had to imagine the skin over the muscles and the animal was practically brought back to life" "In the 1790s Cuvier began publishing a series of papers on fossil … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[SOUTH SEA BUBBLE]
[Economics] ~ SOUTH SEA BUBBLE REVISITED IN 1825 [SOUTH SEA BUBBLE] The south sea bubble, and the Numerous Fraudulent Projects to which it gave rise in 1720, historically detailed as a beacon to the unwary against modern schemes (enumerated in an appendix) equally visionary and nefarious London. For Thomas Boys, 1825. 12mo in 6s. 180pp. With engraved frontispiece and extra-engraved title, both depicting contemporary images relating to the Bubble. Uncut, in original publisher's attractive printed boards. Rubbed and a trifle marked, with loss to head of spine. FFEP torn away. Armorial bookplate of James Whatman to FEP. An unsophisticated copy of the second edition, extended with the addition of some 37 pages of additional appendices, of a timely examination, published in the year of the repeal of the 1720 Bubble Act, and of the first modern financial crisis, of the delusional speculation that accompanied the remarkable growth in value of stock of the South Sea Company in the early eighteenth century. First published in the same year, also by Boys, the anonymous The South sea bubble, and the Numerous Fraudulent Projects to which it gave rise in 1720 provides a potted history of the Bubble and reprints eight contemporary satirical verses on the matter, alongside legal opinions, a reprinting of an 1825 London Magazine article, 'Bubbles', and lists of the numerous loans and joint-stock companies launched in 1824-5. In so doing, the author leaves little to the imagination in drawing a parallel between fervent contemporary financial speculation and that of the South Sea delusion ju … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fleischer, 1825. - 010

David Reed
Boston, Massachusetts: Francis Y. Carlile, 1825. See item description. View items for sale Exceedingly rare, bound, and complete run of the CHRISTIAN REGISTER, Volume 4, published weekly in Boston in 1825. The 52 issues date from January 8, 1825 (Volume 4, Number 1), through December 31, 1825 (Volume 4, Number 52). The paper on which the newspaper is printed is quite supple even today, having a high rag content, and the pages are clean of handwriting, except for the frequent appearance of the recipient's name (R. H. Green, Esquire) at the tops of many Pages 1, presumably appearing there in order to facilitate delivery by the Post Office. Each issue contains four pages and the newspaper was published weekly on Saturdays. The CHRISTIAN REGISTER was published from April 20, 1821, through June 27, 1835, after which the name of the newspaper was changed to THE CHRISTIAN REGISTER AND BOSTON OBSERVER. In October, 1843, the name was changed back to THE CHRISTIAN REGISTER until 1957, when the name was changed to THE UNITARIAN REGISTER. Four years later the newspaper merged with THE UNIVERSALIST LEADER to become UU WORLD, which continues to be published to this day. The 1825 newspaper contains essays related to religion, particularly Unitarianism, as well as national and local Boston news. David Reed was the publisher during 1825; the following year the publisher would be the American Unitarian Association and in 1827 Mr. Reed resumed the title as publisher. This particular Volume IV is ex-libris, but the only indication of this is a bookplate ("York Institute Library") inside the fr … [Click Below for Full Description]

S. Tanner. [Click Below for Full Description]
