Whitaker, John. Blake, William.
1825. London: Button Whitaker and Company, [1818-28]. 2 vols., royal 8vo, engraved title, (4), iv, 240 (engraved plates of music and text); engraved title after Blake, 240 (engraved plates of music and text), (4, indices)pp. Original dark blue ribbed cloth, backstrips lettered in gilt, covers showing some wear and staining, internally some browning and final leaf to vol. 2 repaired at margins with no loss. In all a good set, surprisingly scarce complete. Presumably a remainder binding as the title-page notes that it was issued in boards. § All editions are very scarce. The engraved title to volume 2 has "Conscience and the Recording Angel" beneath Blake's design, and a direction to "See Page 1, Vol 2 of this work". The design is a reduced scale copy of that for page 27 of Young's "Night Thoughts" engraving, with the text for The Seraph's title replacing that in the corresponding area of the original. Pages 1-5 of Volume 2 have the words from page 27 of Night Thoughts spoken by the Recording Angel: words are set to music by Young for 4 voices. The engraved image by P. Jones is a good replica of Blake's original, crisp, clean, with just some browning to the margins. Bentley, BB, 512 C and BBS, page 264. Note: the only non-English composer of the music was Mozart, two pieces in each volume. Also, one piece is attributed to John Milton (father of the great poet).

[No place, 1825. Unbound. Very Good. Small embossed paper mache(?) or embossed card illustration plaque of the figure of a kneeling slave painted in black, white, and blue, which is surrounded by an oval metal frame that is hand painted in gold and lavender with the sentiment "How Sweet Is Liberty" surrounding the image; which is in turn mounted in a round marble frame. Unexamined out of the frame (the figure and surround are partially sealed into the frame with plaster), the figure appears near fine, the metal surround has some rubbing and is very good, the marble is moderately chipped and worn. One of many keepsakes featuring this kneeling figure which were popular with abolitionists starting around 1800 until the outright abolition of slavery in that country and its colonies in 1834. The image, sometimes called "Hercules Subdued", was designed as the seal of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade, and was widely distributed as a cameo by abolitionist and manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood.

Whewell, William WITH Mantell, Gideon A. WITH Faraday M. [Michael] WITH Babbage, Charles; Herschel, John
Royal Society, London, 1825. Full volume FIRST EDITION inclusive of the following papers of import: William Whewell gives crystallography a mathematical foundation. Gideon Mantell presents identifies and describes the first fossils originating from a dinosaur, the Iguanodon. Michael Faraday publishes details of his discovery of Benzene, the parent substance of all aromatic compounds. He "is still credited with making important contributions to giving a mathematical foundation to crystallography," this paper his most important on the subject (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Whewell "was drawn to the extremely imperfect and anomalous state of crystallography as a mathematical science - its unsystematic methods and its lack of an adequate and general notation. His work in crystallography foreshadowed the approach he would take in all his scientific research: a concern with nomenclature, methodology, and utility. [In this his first paper on the subject his] aim was to rid crystallography of its arbitrary symbols, to relate its notation to its method of analysis, and to 'reduce the mathematical portion of crystallography to a small number of simply formula of universal application.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Belle signature. Uneven edges, paper toned, tears not affecting. 1,000 $ Extremely rare, we have been able to locate only one other copy of this work at Stanford University; given by Francisco Paula de Santander (1792 – 1840), the Reglamento gives outlines for the conformation of the military (members of staff, quantity, succession, distribution of salaries, etc.) and details all aspects of rule and command for infantry and cavalry, again with specifications of their conformations (number of officers, rations for horses according to the rank of the officer, etc.). Amongst the subjects mentioned, is who is in charged of requesting and making maps, designing fortresses and parks, amongst others. Santander issued the Decree as Vice President of what is not known as the Great Colombia, a position that he would occupy from 1819 to 1827, thus most of its duration, and is undersigned by Carlos Soublette (1789 – 1870), a Venezuelan leader of the War of Independence, who had been recently appointed Minister of War and Marine (March, 1825) of Colombia.
