D. M. Editio Nova, Recognita, Et Emendata, A Judah D'Allemand." Dr. Thomas Bray was one of the founders of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in 1698 and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in 1701. He was appointed to preside over ministers sent to Maryland, his acceptance being based upon the proposition that parochial libraries be provided for ministers sent overseas. Bray understood that the lack of available books would be a serious hindrance to ministers too poor to build up their own libraries. Dr. Bray provided 16 libraries for Maryland, including Annapolis, the first lending library in America, which consisted of about 1000 volumes and cost £400. He also founded libraries in Carolina, Rhode Island, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, the Bermudas, the Bahamas, etc. Bray himself donated £500 to these American libraries, the other subscriptions received having fallen short of the amount needed. His efforts to obtain subscriptions for these libraries occasionally met with the remark that "Charity begins at home." Recognizing the justice of this criticism, he began a programme for providing libraries for the home clergy with lending libraries formed throughout England. One of his proposals was that booksellers would provide books for foreign libraries free of charge in return for the purchase of books for local lending libraries. Bray proposed also that the lending libraries should be movable and travel abroad. Because of the possibility of loss, the books would be marked according to what Deanery they belonged. In 1701 he published "Several Circular Letters" that said "I do therefore conclude it equally necessary to have in each parish a Collection of plain practical Books, for the use of the Laity that the Defects of publick Teaching may be supplied this way." George Smith wrote in the Library Association Record: "To initiate so large a design would seem to demand a colossal fortune, to require its proposer to be of the highest rank and influence, and to need the assistance of the State; but it was commenced, and to a great extent carried out, not by any of these means, but by the unselfish sacrifice, the inspiring enthusiasm, and the practical common sense of its originator".

A Sketch of the Life, Condemnation, and Death of the Three Thayers...

1825. A Murderous Trio of Brothers in Buffalo, New York [Broadside]. [Execution]. [New York State]. A Sketch of the Life, Condemnation, and Death of the Three Thayers, Who Were Hanged at Buffalo, on the 17th of June, 1825, for the Murder of John Love. [Buffalo, NY; S.n.], 1825. 18" x 11 1/2" broadside. Text in two columns, woodcut illustrations of three caskets. Light browning and foxing, vertical and horizontal fold lines, moderate edgewear, two small holes with negligible loss to text, a few early repairs to verso along fold lines. * Nelson, Israel and Isaac Thayer were brothers. Nelson and Israel, farmers who appear to have been lazy, owed a considerable amount of money to John Love, a wealthy bachelor who boarded with Nelson. Unable to clear their debts, the two older brothers enlisted their younger brother, Isaac, to murder Love. The broadside account concludes: "There is probably a parallel case to this in the history of man. It was truly afflicting to see three young men, brothers, thus brought to an ignominious death for a crime committed to gratify a love for idleness and a lust for money. May all others take warning by their example." OCLC locates 3 copies (New-York Historical Society, American Antiquarian Society, University of Michigan, Clements Library).

Also a Description of the Five-Feet Equatorial Instrument Employed in the Observations." 4to. Double stars, essentially discovered by William Herschel were of great interest throughout the nineteenth century - new ones being found and postition measurements made more precise with each improvement in telescope construction. South, working with John Herschel during the years 1821-1823, re-observed the double stars charted originally by William Herschel, mainly for the purpose of detecting position changes. Their observations helped verify the newly recognized orbital motion of these neighboring stars. Their resulting catalog of 380 double stars, presented to the Royal Society in 1834, earned them the gold medal of the Astronomical Society and the grand prize of the Institute France.         Die Auster und die Austernwirthschaft. Berlin, Wiegandt, Hempel and Parey, 1877. 8vo. With full-page wood-engraved map and 9 wood-engravings in text. Original publisher's cloth.

      - BMC NH, p. 1327; DSB IX, pp. 431-432; not in Ekama. Surprisingly rare first edition of a great classic in ecology by Karl August Möbius (1825-1908). Although nominally devoted to oysters, comparing oyster beds and oyster fishing in several regions (the Waddenzee is discussed in several chapters) and discussing the practical implications of introducing new beds on the German coasts, the book is best known and most important for Möbius's view of the oyster beds as an entire ecosystem, a revolutionary idea in 1877. Its influence can still be felt today, and it is still used for the study of coastal ecosystems. Nordenskiöld calls Möbius "the pioneer in this field . . . he has created the modern system and methodics of oecology" (The History of Biology, 1929, p. 559). A. Thienemann, W.N. Sukacev and A. Tansley were clearly influenced by Möbius, an influence also apparent in more recent works by Ally, Dajoz, and Odum.Bookplate inside front cover. Very good copy, binding only very slightly rubbed.

View Near Fort Miller. No. 10 of the Hudson River Port Folio (later No. 9)

Henry J. Megarey, New York 1825 - 1st state. Aquatint, colored by hand, by John Hill, after W.G. Wall. Sight Size: 16 7/8 x 22 5/8 inches. In white gold leaf frame, close framed, 23 1/8 x 28 7/8 inches. A great example of one of the earliest and finest American printed landscapes This serene landscape portrait looking down the great Hudson River toward West Point is a fine example of the Wall/Hill collaboration in which an apparently straightforward depiction of water, trees, hills and sky creates a rich, evocative mood, a sense of vast calm. In the first state, this is plate 10 and in the subsequent state plate 9. Its text begins: "VIEW NEAR FORT MILLER BRIDGE. / FORT MILLER is a small village in the township of Argyle and Washington county; thirty-seven miles north of Albany, and thirteen south of Sandy-Hill. The great post-road from Albany crosses the bridge at this place. There are some considerable rapids and falls near this place; the latter of which were about eight feet in height when this view of the river was taken. Over these falls it is by no means unusual for raftmen to precipitate their rafts. General Putnam is said to have been the first who tried this daring achievement. A party of Indians came suddenly upon him, as he was lying near the rapids with a bateau and five men. The situation of this village is pleasing; the country about it picturesque; and the soil favourable to cultivation." In the summer of 1820 the Irish-born and trained landscape artist William Guy Wall (1792-after 1864) went on an extended sketching tour of the Hudson River Valley and its environs. A selection of Wall's watercolors recording sights on his tour was engraved by the master printmaker John Hill (1770-1850) in The Hudson River Portfolio, published in New York City by Henry J. Megarey between 1821 and 1825. Long considered a cornerstone in the development of American printmaking and landscape painting, its twenty topographical views cover roughly 212 miles of the 315-mile course of the Hudson River. This undertaking paved the way for a wider public appreciation of landscape in the United States. The first series of prints to make Americans aware of the beauty and sublimity of their own scenery, the seminal Portfolio helped to stimulate national pride and cultural identity.         A letter to John Harvey, Esq. containing an examination of a pamphlet, entitled 'Mrs. Graham's statement of facts' relative to the balloon.

Norwich, Burks and Kinnebrook, printers. [1825]. 8vo., 29 + (3)pp., including the final blank, title a little dust marked else a fine, uncut, copy, sewn as issued, now preserved in a modern cloth portfolio, spine gilt lettered. First and only edition. This is a long letter of complaint about the unsatisfactory preparation and launch of a manned balloon which Stark had been asked to fill with gas prior to launch. The flight had been organised by the enthusiastic 'patron of aerostation', the Norwich alderman, Colonel John Harvey. The balloon belonged to the celebrated Margaret Graham ('Mrs. Graham the only English Female Aeronaut') and her husband. In the event, on this occasion the balloon ascended with Colonel John Harvey and Mrs Graham as passengers, Mrs Graham having taken the place of her husband in order to reduce the payload. Ascending from Richmond Hill, Norwich, the balloon travelled only 6½ miles in a 19-minute flight.

[Buffalo, NY, S.n., 1825. 18" x 11 1/2" broadside. Text in two columns, woodcut illustrations of three caskets. Light browning and foxing, vertical and horizontal fold lines, moderate edgewear, two small holes with negligible loss to text, a few early repairs to verso along fold lines. $2,850. * Nelson, Israel and Isaac Thayer were brothers. Nelson and Israel, farmers who who appear to have been lazy, owed a considerable amount of money to John Love, a wealthy bachelor who boarded with Nelson. Unable to clear their debts, the two older brtohers enlisted their younger brother, Isaac, to murder Love.

Rapport fait à l'Académie Royale des Sciences, Sur la partie Zoologique du Voyage autour du Monde...

Paris: Pillet aîné, 1825. Octavo, 16 pp., quarter calf. Rare report by Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire on the zoological volume of the Freycinet voyage publication, including some personal observations on the mammals of Australia. The Zoologique section of the voyage publication was prepared by Jean René Constant Quoy and Joseph Paul Gaimard, physicians and naturalists accompanying the expedition, and was published in 16 livraisons between 1824 and 1826. In this report, the eminent naturalist and savant critiques the publication, summarising the chapters and adding his own notes and observations. Originally prepared for inclusion in the Revue encyclopédique (1825, volume 26), it was separately printed in this form by the Parisian publishers Pillet to encourage sale of the Zoologique and other upcoming volumes of the Freycinet voyage publication. Effectively it forms a prospectus for the Zoologique, distributed gratis by Pillet to likely buyers. In his report Saint-Hilaire comments on the remarkable mammals of New Holland, including the possum, potoroo and kangaroo, remarking on the remarkable quality and colour of its pelt: '...le kanguroo laineux; cette derniére espèce est surtout très-remarquable par la qualité de son poil, rappelant tout-à-fait celui de la vigogne par la vivacité de sa teinte (le roux ferrugineux), et par sa finesse et son abondance'. Interestingly, Saint-Hilaire also makes a passing reference to Australia's first professional artist John Lewin: 'Cependant peut-être faudra-t-il revenir aux premières vues de M. Lewin dessinateur et graveur sur les lieux mêmes, à Sydney'.Saint-Hilaire was a towering figure of French science, appointed professor of quadrupeds, cetaceans, birds, reptiles and fish at the Musée d'histoire naturelle in 1793 at the young age of twenty-one. He travelled with Napoleon's campaign to Egypt, but it was his long study of the museum's mammalian collection that made him famous, and led to comparisons with Cuvier (although the two men fell out in 1829). During his tenure he published a series of articles and monographs on the platypus.

Wall map of the world - Eustache Hérison, 1825.

WALL MAP OF THE WORLD MAP FROM THE AGE OF DISCOVERY?La Mappe Monde ou le Globe Terrestre Repr?sent? en deux H?misph?res, l?un Oriental, l'autre Occidental, o? sont marqu?es Les D?couvertes les plus r?centes Faites par Mackenzie, Vancouver, La P?rouse, Bruce, Renell, Mungo-Park, Joub Barrow et Le Vaillant?. Double-hemisphere wall map of the world, copper engraving on 2 joined leaves, by Eustache H?risson. Revised edition published in Paris by Basset, 1825. Size: 90 x 119 cm. (hemispheres each ? 60,5 cm). Coloured by a later hand.Very rare world map, precisely engraved and filled with finely rendered detail in the interior and along coastlines. The map includes the latest information from the discoveries of Captain Cook, who?s three voyages are chronicled. This revised edition is an update of earlier and smaller editions of the map (the first being issued in 1795) with the most recent discoveries added. The explorers Lap?rouse, Alexander Mackenzie, George Vancouver, James Bruce, James Renell, Mungo Park, John Barrow and Fran?ois Le Vaillant are mentioned in the caption and their respective voyages indicated on the map.About the explorers:James Cook (1728-1779) joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years? War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. This helped bring Cook to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This notice came at a crucial moment in both Cook?s career and the direction of British overseas exploration, and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HMS Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages. On his voyages to the Pacific Captain Cook achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. In three voyages Cook sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas of the globe. He mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean in greater detail and on a scale not previously achieved. As he progressed on his voyages of discovery he surveyed and named features, and recorded islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. He displayed a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in adverse conditions.Compte Lap?rouse (1741 ? 1788?) was appointed in 1785 by Louis XVI to lead an expedition around the world. The expedition?s aims were to complete the Pacific discoveries of James Cook, correct and complete maps of the area, establish trade contacts, open new maritime routes and enrich French science and scientific collections. His ships were the Astrolabe and the Boussole. They were to explore both the north and south Pacific, including the coasts of the Far East and of Australia, and send back reports through existing European outposts in the Pacific.Alexander Mackenzie (1764 - 1820) was a Scottish explorer known for his overland crossing of what is now Canada to reach the Pacific Ocean in 1793.Captain George Vancouver (1757 ?1798) was an English officer of the Royal Navy, best known for his 1791?95 expedition, which explored and charted North America?s northwestern Pacific Coast regions, including the coasts of contemporary Alaska, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon. He also explored the Hawaiian Islands and the southwest coast of Australia.James Bruce (1730 ? 1794) was a Scottish traveller and travel writer who spent more than a dozen years in North Africa and Ethiopia, where he traced the origins of the Blue Nile.James Rennell (1742 ?1830) was the leading British geographer of his time. Rennell constructed the first nearly accurate map of India. Todays he is known as the ?Father of Indian Geography?.Mungo Park (1771 ? 1806) was a Scottish explorer of the African continent. He was the first Westerner known to have travelled to the central portion of the Niger River.John Barrow (1764-1848) was an English statesman and one of the greatest promoters of British exploration. Most notably were his expeditions to West Africa and the North Polar Region with attempts to find a Northwest Passage from east to west through the Canadian Arctic.Fran?ois Le Vaillant (1753 ?1824) was a French author, explorer, naturalist, zoological collector, noted ornithologist, and traveller of Africa.Price: ?3.250,-.

Illustrations of the Book of Job.

London: [plates dated] 1825 [but published 1826]. Folio, 320 x 254 mm, engraved title and 21 plates. Proofs on India paper mounted on handmade paper, some leaves watermarked J. Whatman Turkey Mill 1825. Matted, a brilliant set, with the original printed label preserved. First edition, limited to 150 proof sets (65 sets were also printed on French paper, and 100 sets on drawing paper with the word ‘proof’removed). This is the finest set of the proofs I have ever seen, and far outshines the other two original printings and the later re-issue. The India paper set is the best printing of these famous plates which comprise Blake’s major single achievement as a printmaker after the illuminated books. Illustrations of the Book of Job was Blake’s last completed prophetic book: the text, a series of biblical quotations, is above and below each image. “It was produced while Blake was still working on Jerusalem, his most obscure book; yet the illustrations are Blake’s most lucid; and they are the supreme example of his reading the Bible in its spiritual sense” (S. Foster Damon, A Blake Dictionary, p. 217). “The modest size of the central panels does not prevent them from ranking with the supreme masterpieces of graphic art” (Ray, Illustrator and the Book in England #8).

        Memoirs of Samuel Pepys

1825. First Edition . PEPYS, Samuel. Memoirs of Samuel PepysÂ… Comprising His Diary From 1659 to 1669, DecipheredÂ… And a Selection from His Private Correspondence. Edited by Richard, Lord Braybrooke. London: Henry Colburn, 1825. Two volumes. Quarto, contemporary full calf sympathetically rebacked in calf-gilt, red and green morocco spine labels, raised bands, original marbled endpapers and edges. $2600.First edition of Samuel PepysÂ’ entertaining and influential diary, illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait of Pepys and 13 other engraved plates, in contemporary boards.Secretary to the Admiralty during the reigns of Charles II and James II, Samuel Pepys ""made no scruple of committing his most secret thoughts to paper. It is a human document, illustrating the manners and habits of the age"" (Rosenbach 33:281). He commenced his diary at age 27 and, for fear of losing his eyesight, ended it nine years later, but not before filling six volumes with closely written shorthand. The diary languished in the Magdalene College library until the Reverend John Smith deciphered its text between 1819-22. It was first published in 1825. ""To read Pepys is to be transported immediately into his world. His diary is not so much a record of events as a recreation of them. Not all the passages are as picturesque as the famous set pieces in which he describes Charles II's coronation or the Great Fire of London, but there is not an entry which does not in some degree display the same power of summoning back to life the events it relatesÂ… Throughout the diary Pepys writes mainly as an observer of people. It is this that makes him the most human and accessible of diarists, and that gives the Diary its special quality as a historical record"" (Latham, The Illustrated Pepys, 7). ""The best book of its kind in the English languageÂ… Pepys is marvelously entertaining: the times and the man peep out in a thousand odd circumstances and amusing expressionsÂ… The ablest picture of the age in which the writer lived, and a work of standard importance in English Literature"" (Allibone, 1557). Illustrated with 14 engraved plates, including frontispiece portrait of Pepys and folding plan of the Dutch fleet. Volume I with Table of Contents bound between pages viii and ix. Grolier 100. Lowndes, 1828. Small bookplates of New York magazine publisher Ormond G. Smith.Volume I with scattered light foxing; Volume II generally clean. Top margin of both title pages restored.         A Review of the Financial Situation of the East-India Company in 1824.

London: for Kingsbury, Parbury, and Allen,, 1825. Octavo in half-sheets (211 x 127 mm). Contemporary half calf, spine richly gilt in compartments, raised bands, red morocco label, marbled sides, sprinkled edges. Bound with the half-title. Armorial bookplate of Archibald Trotter to the front pastedown. Head of spine chipped, joints and corners rubbed, front joint superficially cracked, but firm, turn-ins offset to binder's blanks, pale spotting to prelims, dedication leaf lightly creased, very small hole to fore margin of sig. 2B4, the text unaffected. A very good copy. First edition, scarce. From the library of Archibald Trotter of Dryden (1789-1868), employee of the Bengal civil service from 1806, the year of Tucker's disgrace and imprisonment, until his retirement 1840, after which he served as a magistrate for Midlothian. Tucker (1771/2-1851) sailed to Calcutta in 1786 and held a variety of clerical appointments before joining the Bengal civil service in 1792, where he drafted plans for establishing a bank (later realised in the Bank of Bengal). He served as accountant-general from 1801 to 1806, when he was convicted for the attempted rape of a former colleague's wife, though the affair had remarkably little effect on his career. Following his release from a six-month prison sentence he held a variety of further posts before leaving India permanently in 1815. "In 1826 Tucker was elected a director of the East India Company and, apart from the obligatory years of exclusion, remained on the court until his death in 1851, devoting great energy to issues of Indian administration. As a tory who had first served under the paternalistic reigns of Cornwallis and Wellesley, he spearheaded the conservative reaction to the radical anti-landlord revenue settlements of the 1830s and rallied support against the prolonged assault of missionaries and free-traders on the company's privileges. He also led the company's opposition to the annexation of Sind and the First Afghan War. In recognition of his application and remarkably broad experience, he was elected chairman of the company in 1834 and again in 1847" (ODNB).
