London: Knight And Lacey. Very Good+. 1825. First Edition. Leather Bound. Clean and tight in lovely 19th century bindings of tan calf over marbled boards with leather title labels at spines in red and green with gilt lettering; raised bands and extensive gilt decoration at spines with armorial bookplate with coat of arms of John Croft Deverell to paste downs. Quite scarce as a complete set, particularly in this condition. George H. Borrow's first published work. Illustrations include portraits, courtroom scenes and a plan of a murder scene. Contents include accounts of many notable trials at Newgate between the years 1806 and 1825; charges include murder, fortune telling, etc. In April 1824, George Borrow, age 23, arrived in London to pursue his literary career. The publisher Richard Phillips proposed that Borrow compile a book for him: "... you could earn more money for me, sir, and consequently for yourself, by a compilation of Newgate lives and trials. [Lavengro, p. 204] The work was the set offerred here: Celebrated Trials, and Remarkable Cases of Criminal Jurisprudence, from the earliest records to the year 1825. Borrow, despitesome hesitation enjoyed the project: "Of all my occupations at this period I am free to confess I liked that of compiling the Newgate Lives and Trials the best; that is, after I had surmounted a kind of prejudice which I originally entertained [Lavengro, p. 216] As he said of the various accounts: "What struck me most with respect to these lives was the art which the writers, whoever they were, possessed of telling a plain story. It is no easy thing to tell a story plainly and distinctly by mouth; but to tell one on paper is difficult indeed, so many snares lie in the way. People are afraid to put down what is common on paper, they seek to embellish their narratives, as they think, by philosophic speculations and reflections; they are anxious to shine, and people who are anxious to shine can never tell a plain story." [Lavengro, p. 217] In the Lavengro account, it appears that ironically George Borrow didn't make a profit on the the Celebrated Trials, but only covered his expenses. Additional shipping charge for this heavy multi-volume set. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. .

Eighteen Views taken at & near Rangoon.

London, Thomas Clay, [1825]. Large Folio. Modern red half morocco over original 19th-century mabled boards; engraved pictorial title (serving as dedication leaf), engraved pictorial subscribers' list with further dedication, 3 lithographic leaves of subscribers, many of which residing in India, 18 magnificent and finely handcoloured aquatint plates; light rubbing to boards; one plate with flawed corner three inches away from printed surface, the initial two leaves with foxing and faint trace of humidity, the plates a little spotted in the margins, images clean and in superb publisher's hand-colouring; provenance: armorial engraved bookplate Newborough inside front cover. First edition, very rare, of this pictorial documentation of the Anglo-Indian capture of Rangoon, as well as presenting the beauty and atmosphere of Burmese scenery, architecture and landscape. The first Anglo-Burmese war of 1824 to 1826 was one of the costliest campaigns ever fought by the Empire. Fifteen thousand British and Indian soldiers, and an unknown, much higher number of Burmese, civilian and soldiers, died, and the finances of the East India Company, to whose directors the work is dedicated, were ruined. The 18 plates are the first large-scale views of Burma, a part of the world pretty unknown to the British. We were unable to find out anything about the clearly very talented artist, Lieutenant Joseph Moore, 89th Foot. - The following year appeared a further series of six views, and there were two text booklets as well. Everything is very rarely found together. Abbey, Travel 404 ('rare work').

Voyage Autour du Monde Fait par Ordre du Roi, sur les Corvettes de S.M. L'Uranie et la Physicienne, pendant les annees 1817, 1818, 1819 et 1820. Atlas Historique

Chez Pillet Ainé, Paris 1825 - 10pp. Engraved title page and 112 plates and maps (two folding, forty hand colored). Expertly bound to style in blue-green calf and contemporary green cloth covered boards, flat spine tooled and lettered in gilt The beautifully illustrated Atlas Historique for this important French-sponsored circumnavigation. The Freycinet expedition resulted in a total of four large atlases and nine accompanying volumes of text. "This later circumnavigation by Captain Freycinet was organized by the French government, under the recently restored Bourbon Dynasty, to show the flag around the world and to make scientific observations on geography, magnetism, and meteorology. It was one of the important voyages of exploration of the early nineteenth century. The Uranie sailed from Toulon to Gibraltar, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Cape of Good Hope, Mascarene Islands, Western Australia, Timor, New Guinea, the Mariana Islands, Caroline Islands, Sandwich Islands, New South Wales, New Zealand, Tierra del Fuego, and the Falkland Islands, where the Uranie was shipwrecked in French Bay .The ship's doctors, Quoy and Gaimard, and the pharmacist Gaudichaud served as the naturalists, collected specimens, and published separate volumes on zoology and botany. Freycinet was clandestinely accompanied by his wife, Rose, after whom he named an island in the Samoan chain .The scientific results of Freycinet's explorations in Timor, the islands off New Guinea, the Marianas, and Hawaii were particularly significant and added greatly to the fund of knowledge that the Europeans had of the geography, cultures, and histories of these areas. The writings on the penal colony of Port Jackson, Australia, are of special historic importance" (Hill). The voyage included a one-month visit in the Sandwich Islands, with time spent in Hawaii, Maui, and Oahu, as well as visits to Rio de Janeiro, Cape of Good Hope, Montevideo, Mauritius, New South Wales, and the Caroline Islands. The handsome plates in the atlases, many of which are colored, add greatly to the ethnographic and natural historical aspect of the work. Ferguson 941; Hill 649; Sabin 25916; Forbes 602.         L'hermitage des Camaldoli

Original lithograph signed Florence Lit. Salucci 97 ° 515 in the lower right corner and Chatlotte in the lower left corner.View of the hermitage of Calmadoli in the upper valley of the Arno in Tuscany. It was made in Florence by Salucci, a lithographer who worked for the Bonaparte family, and who, among other things, produced a portrait of Napoleon III (Bibliothèque nationale de France). This lithograph of exceptional quality was realized for Charlotte Bonaparte (mention Charlotte lower left). The Tuscan village of Camaldoli, the cradle of the Benedictine order of the Camaldolese from the early eleventh century, only guessing through the vegetation, its two towers rebuilt 1713 visible between two trees. The monastery was a favorite stop of the spouses Bonaparte, Napoleon Charlotte and Louis, siblings and nephews cousins of Napoleon 1st, married in 1826 in Florence. Their common passion for the arts leads them to frequent artists who encourage them in their intense activity and with whom they collaborate, such as Salucci, who performs this lithography for Charlotte Bonaparte, but also the engraver Samuele Jesi, the painter Leopold Robert or the draftsman Giovanni Riveruzzi ... Both travel the region whose landscapes inspire them and stay in the Tuscan villages to which they are attached. Florence circa.

2 vols.

Deuxième édition, enrichie d'appendices. - Bruexelles, Auguste Wahle, 1825, Kl.-Folio, (2) ff., XLIX, 319 pp. (2) ff., 584 pp. 56 handcolor. farblith. The most spectacular of the early classics in dermatology, with hand-colored illustrations unsurpassed for their quality of execution, if not for their aesthetic appeal. The first-class illustrations were produced about 160 years ago and are not only the equal of modern colour photographs, and they deliberately emphasized characteristics to the diseases illustrated. This book, one of the finest works of its kind, was produced at great expense. Most of the splendid, delicately hand-coloured engravings were drawn by Moreau-Valville and engraved by Tresca. These illustrations are life-size or near life-size, and are of great clarity. Jean-Louis- Marc, le Baron Alibert (1768-1837), was made physician for skin diseases in 1803, and the first to systematically teach dermatology in France. He introduced the first natural method of classifying skin diseases. He was the first to describe mycosis fungoides, keloid, etc., and introduced many new terms, such as "syphilides", "dermatoses", "dermatolysis", etc.Ehring, Hautkrankheiten, p.107 Garrison, History of Medicine, pp.417ff.         Illinois and Missouri by H. S. Tanner. Improved to 1825

      H. S. Tanner, Philadelphia 1825 - Copper-engraving with full period colour. One of the earliest state maps of Illinois and Missouri, this is the revised second issue with significant changes to the mapping of the Mississippi headwaters and with an early depiction of the beginnings of the Santa Fe Trail. Henry Tanner's A New American Atlas was the most distinguished atlas published in America during the nineteenth century. The maps were carefully constructed from the best and most recent surveys. They were finely engraved on a large-scale, printed on high quality paper, and carefully hand colored. Because of the great expense involved in the production and publication, the atlas was published in five parts between 1819 and 1823. This is one of the earliest maps to show Illinois and Missouri as American states. The map was added to the fifth part of the atlas in 1823. For Illinois, organized counties appear only in the southern part of the state. The northernmost part of the state is still the preserve of the Sauk and Fox. Further south, between the Illinois and Mississippi rivers, are the Military Bounty Lands. A primitive Chicago and Fort Dearborn appear at the mouth of the Chicago River. For Missouri, a state since 1820, counties appear only along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Missouri's northern and southern extremities are quite empty. This copy is an example of the improved second issue of the map. The most significant changes can be seen in Tanner's revised mapping of the headwaters of the Mississippi. Tributaries off the Tete de Mort River have been removed, the locations and directions of the Sahsinakway, Fievre and Apple Rivers flow north to south (as opposed to northeast to southwest), Oak Creek has been removed, and the lead mines just north of the Tete de Mort River are now named Dubuque Lead Mines. Another significant change to the map is the addition of Lexington, Missouri; platted in 1822 and made the county seat the following year, Lexington would become an outfitting point for many travelling westward on the Santa Fe and Oregon trails. Other changes to the map from the first edition include the additions of several counties in Illinois created since the first printing. Phillips, Atlases , 3669-12; cf. Ristow, American Maps and Mapmakers , pp. 191-198; Rumsey, 2755.017; cf. Sabin 94323. [Attributes: First Edition]

Valentin, Gesch. d. Orthopädie, p.175f.         Tunnel, The

London: T. Brown, 1825. "The Earliest Peep Show of the Thames Tunnel" [PEEP SHOW]. The Tunnel. London: Pubd. June 16th, 1825 by T. Brown. Oblong twelvemo (4 11/16 x 5 3/4 inches; 120 x 145 mm.) in original paper concertina form. Top board with oval opening (1 5/8 x 2 3/4 inches; 40 x 70 mm.). There are six panels within including, the rear panel. Peepshow opens to a depth of 26 1/2 inches; 673 mm., revealing two tunnels with pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Small stain from early sellotape repair to lower first fold on bellows, otherwise near fine. Housed in the original asparagus-green cardboard slipcase with printed pictorial label on front cover. Rubbed at extremities. Quite scarce. According to OCLC there are only five copies in libraries and institutions worldwide. (NY Public Library; Smithsonian Institution; Art Institute of Chicago; Indiana University, & Jacob S. Mauney Memorial Library, North Carolina). "The start of the construction in 1825 of the Thames Tunnel, the "Eighth Wonder of the World," made international news. On August 23, 1825, the Philadelphia newspaper the National Gazette wrote about the underground tunnel that would connect the opposite banks of the Thames River for commercial purposes as "the commencement of [a] novel undertaking, which will be read with interest." Constructed after the revolutionary designs of Marc Brunel (1769-1849), the novel undertaking led not only to persons reading about it with interest but to the production of novelties. From the onset of construction and despite floods and collapses in the 1820s and 1830s, visitors flocked to see the tunnel. Merchandise vendors selling all manner of souvenirs, including peepshows, quickly followed. The engineering feat spurred publishers to issue over fifty different designs of Thames Tunnel peepshows between 1825 and the early 1860s. No other subject comprised as many of them. By probable consequence, the contemporary term "tunnel book" soon thereafter superseded "peepshow" in our lexicon for these devices. "The earliest peepshow of the Thames Tunnel." (Ralph Hyde. #195, p. 177). The first Thames Tunnel peepshow issued in 1825 by London publisher T. Brown served as the model for the graphic design of the devices, including S. E. Gouyn's, through the 1830s. Comprised of the imagined Eastern and Western archways, a look through the book's peephole reveals pedestrian and vehicular traffic, including men on horseback, carriages, and horse-drawn wagons." (The Library Company of Philadelphia). "The peep-show seems to have been a British invention and the earliest ones are usually the best. The Germans, with their onslaught on the British juvenile market in the 1830's copies, cheapened and coarsened the thing, but the later French ones are the daintiest of all. In modern times the toy has been occasionally revived for advertising purposes." (Percy Muir. Children's Books of Yesterday, p. 190). Ralph Hyde. "Paper Peepshows", p. 28, # 195; Percy Muir. Children's Books of Yesterday, # 991 (p. 190).

        L'hermitage des Camaldoli

1825 - - Florence circa. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Original lithograph signed Florence Lit. Salucci 97 ° 515 in the lower right corner and Chatlotte in the lower left corner. View of the hermitage of Calmadoli in the upper valley of the Arno in Tuscany. Their common passion for the arts leads them to frequent artists who encourage them in their intense activity and with whom they collaborate, such as Salucci, who performs this lithography for Charlotte Bonaparte, but also the engraver Samuele Jesi, the painter Leopold Robert or the draftsman Giovanni Riveruzzi . Both travel the region whose landscapes inspire them and stay in the Tuscan villages to which they are attached. [Attributes: First Edition]
