Paris: Chez Pillet Ainé, 1825. 10pp. plus engraved titlepage and 112 plates and maps (two folding, forty handcolored). Folio. Expertly bound to style in blue-green calf and contemporary green cloth, spine gilt. Very good. The Freycinet expedition resulted in a total of four large atlases and nine accompanying volumes of text. "This later circumnavigation by Captain Freycinet was organized by the French government, under the recently restored Bourbon Dynasty, to show the flag around the world and to make scientific observations on geography, magnetism, and meteorology. It was one of the important voyages of exploration of the early nineteenth century. The URANIE sailed from Toulon to Gibraltar, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Cape of Good Hope, Mascarene Islands, Western Australia, Timor, New Guinea, the Mariana Islands, Caroline Islands, Sandwich Islands, New South Wales, New Zealand, Tierra del Fuego, and the Falkland Islands, where the URANIE was shipwrecked in French Bay....The ship's doctors, Quoy and Gaimard, and the pharmacist Gaudichaud served as the naturalists, collected specimens, and published separate volumes on zoology and botany. Freycinet was clandestinely accompanied by his wife, Rose, after whom he named an island in the Samoan chain....The scientific results of Freycinet's explorations in Timor, the islands off New Guinea, the Marianas, and Hawaii were particularly significant and added greatly to the fund of knowledge that the Europeans had of the geography, cultures, and histories of these areas. The writings on the penal colony of Port Jackson, Australia, are of special historic importance" - Hill. The voyage included a one-month visit in the Sandwich Islands, with time spent in Hawaii, Maui, and Oahu, as well as visits to Rio de Janeiro, Cape of Good Hope, Montevideo, Mauritius, New South Wales, and the Caroline Islands. The handsome plates in the atlases, many of which are colored, add greatly to the ethnographic and natural historical aspect of the work. FERGUSON 941. HILL 649. SABIN 25916. FORBES 602.

Florence circa. 1825, 23,2x16,8cm, une feuille sous marie-louise. Florence circa. 1825, 23,2x16,8cm, une feuille sous marie-louise. - Original lithograph signed Florence Lit. Salucci 97 ° 515 in the lower right corner and Chatlotte in the lower left corner. View of the hermitage of Calmadoli in the upper valley of the Arno in Tuscany. It was made in Florence by Salucci, a lithographer who worked for the Bonaparte family, and who, among other things, produced a portrait of Napoleon III (Bibliothèque nationale de France). This lithograph of exceptional quality was realized for Charlotte Bonaparte (mention Charlotte lower left). The Tuscan village of Camaldoli, the cradle of the Benedictine order of the Camaldolese from the early eleventh century, only guessing through the vegetation, its two towers rebuilt 1713 visible between two trees. The monastery was a favorite stop of the spouses Bonaparte, Napoleon Charlotte and Louis, siblings and nephews cousins of Napoleon 1st, married in 1826 in Florence. Their common passion for the arts leads them to frequent artists who encourage them in their intense activity and with whom they collaborate, such as Salucci, who performs this lithography for Charlotte Bonaparte, but also the engraver Samuele Jesi, the painter Leopold Robert or the draftsman Giovanni Riveruzzi ... Both travel the region whose landscapes inspire them and stay in the Tuscan villages to which they are attached. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Lithographie originale signée Florence Lit.

A Voyage Towards the South Pole, Performed in the Years 1822-24. Containing an Examination of the Antarctic Sea, to the seventy-fourth Degree of Latitude: and a Visit to Tierra del Fuego, with a Particular Account of the Inhabitants. To which is added, much Useful Information on the Coasting Navigation of Cape Horn, and the Adjacent Lands, with Charts of Harbours, etc.

London: for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1825 - Octavo (225 x 140 mm). Uncut in original boards, sometime rebacked retaining the original paper spine label. Ownership inscription, "M. A. Wilson, May 1955", and recent book label of American bibliophile and noted polar collector Martin L. Greene to the front pastedown. With the errata slip and the publisher's 16-page catalogue, "sometimes removed by contemporary binders" (Rosove). A few small scuffs to boards, tips rubbed, front inner hinge superficially cracked, but firm, a few leaves faintly dog-eared, very short closed tear to stub of map facing p. 1, plate facing p. 172 offset, second plate of coastal profiles foxed, the contents otherwise with only a few trivial marks. An excellent copy. Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, 8 engraved charts of which 6 folding, 6 aquatint plates comprising 4 illustrations of ships and seals after Weddell and 2 folding plates of coastal profiles. First edition. With the ownership inscription of British pilot, African treasure-hunter and Antarctic explorer Frank Bickerton, as "Capt. R. F. C. 1917", to the front pastedown. A stirring provenance: Bickerton was one of the first students to enrol on the new aeronautical engineering programme at the City and Guilds London Institute in 1906, and was recruited shortly after to the Australian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-14, becoming the first to deploy a propeller-driven sledge on the Antarctic, and participating in a famous 1,600-mile sledge journey across previously uncharted territory, later receiving the King's Polar Medal in silver and having Cape Bickerton named in his honour. The expedition was "one of the most successful to be undertaken during the whole of the Heroic Age", and its achievements easily surpassed those of Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which Bickerton was set to join before the onset of war, before enlisting instead in the Royal Flying Corps (Haddesley, Born Adventurer: The Life of Frank Bickerton, Antarctic Pioneer, introduction). Over the course of a two-year sealing voyage, Weddell and his crew reached latitude 74°15'', the southernmost then achieved, discovering what is now known as the Weddell Sea, and also visited and described the Cape Verde Islands, South Orkney (which Weddell is credited with having discovered on his 1819-21 voyage), South Shetland, and South Georgia, before wintering in the Falklands and making further landfalls at Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, and Montevideo on the return journey. "Even when sail ships were replaced by steam ships, and wooden hulls by metallic ice-cutters, his explorations were difficult to duplicate" (idem); his narrative is also "recognized as of considerable importance for its account of the voyage and its survey of the South Shetlands" (ODNB). A highly appealing copy of the book considered "the true starting point for an Antarctic collection" (Taurus). Hill 1843; NMM I 1082 for the second edition; Rosove 345.A1; Taurus 4.

Paris Chez de Bure Frères 1825 - First edition. 4to., [ii], 68, [1] pp., modern half calf, marbled boards, an excellent example. "The shortest path between two truths in the real domain passes through the complex domain." (Jacques Hadamard). Augustin-Louis Cauchy was one of the greatest mathematicians of the modern era. This pamphlet, of which only 500 were printed, is widely regarded as one of Cauchy's most important contributions to mathematics. With it Cauchy created the key tool for the formalisation of the analysis of complex numbers. The theorem, know known as the Cauchy-Goursat theorem after Goursat managed to remove one of its constraints, allows mathematicians to simplify difficult functions in complex analysis. Technically it says that if two different paths connect the same two points, and a function is holomorphic everywhere "in between" the two paths, then the two path integrals of the function will be the same. A note about complex analysis: Complex numbers include the square root of -1. They become very useful when trying to solve difficult problems amongst the real numbers - a real number can be represented as the product of two complex numbers. One can then use the theory of complex numbers to deduce a result in the real numbers. Complex analysis is the mathematical field which develops theorems of functions of complex numbers. Whilst to the lay person, complex analysis is arcane, it is incredibly useful for physicists solving problems in such diverse fields as quantum mechanics, fluid dynamics and electrical engineering. A contemporary visual applications is development of complex scenery in computer-generated images; it is possible to generate very complex shapes using complex analysis with little computational power. A good example of this is a digital scene of a field of grass waving in the wind, which can be rendered using the tools of complex analysis. The Mandlebrot Set is another visually arresting (and infinitely complex) illustration of certain complex numbers. Grattan-Guinness, Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 1640-1940, Ch. 28 (by F. Smithies); and see Smithies, Cauchy and the Creation of Complex Function Theory, Chapter IV [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Starting in 1825, Maund produced The Botanic Garden from his press at Bromsgrove in Worcestershire. The 13 volumes of this periodical depicted with great delicacy ornamental flowering plants cultivated in the Royal Gardens and was dedicated to the young Queen Victoria.       London: Knight And Lacey. Very Good+. 1825. First Edition. Leather Bound. Clean and tight in lovely 19th century bindings of tan calf over marbled boards with leather title labels at spines in red and green with gilt lettering; raised bands and extensive gilt decoration at spines with armorial bookplate with coat of arms of John Croft Deverell to paste downs. Quite scarce as a complete set, particularly in this condition. George H. Borrow's first published work. Illustrations include portraits, courtroom scenes and a plan of a murder scene. Contents include accounts of many notable trials at Newgate between the years 1806 and 1825; charges include murder, fortune telling, etc. In April 1824, George Borrow, age 23, arrived in London to pursue his literary career. The publisher Richard Phillips proposed that Borrow compile a book for him: "... you could earn more money for me, sir, and consequently for yourself, by a compilation of Newgate lives and trials. [Lavengro, p. 204] The work was the set offerred here: Celebrated Trials, and Remarkable Cases of Criminal Jurisprudence, from the earliest records to the year 1825. Borrow, despitesome hesitation enjoyed the project: "Of all my occupations at this period I am free to confess I liked that of compiling the Newgate Lives and Trials the best; that is, after I had surmounted a kind of prejudice which I originally entertained [Lavengro, p. 216] As he said of the various accounts: "What struck me most with respect to these lives was the art which the writers, whoever they were, possessed of telling a plain story. It is no easy thing to tell a story plainly and distinctly by mouth; but to tell one on paper is difficult indeed, so many snares lie in the way. People are afraid to put down what is common on paper, they seek to embellish their narratives, as they think, by philosophic speculations and reflections; they are anxious to shine, and people who are anxious to shine can never tell a plain story." [Lavengro, p. 217] In the Lavengro account, it appears that ironically George Borrow didn't make a profit on the the Celebrated Trials, but only covered his expenses. Additional shipping charge for this heavy multi-volume set. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. .
