Illustrations for the Book of Job

London, England: William Blake, 1825. Title page + 21 numbered plates, collated complete, title page date of 1825, (but the book printed 1826); an India-paper version of this classic work by the English artist William Blake (1757 - 1827) "…Blake's influence on the arts and on popular culture forms an important part of his twentieth-century legacy… reputation reached international proportions…" (Robert N. Essick in the DNB); this set most probably one of those printed by Blake's artist friend John Linnell (1792-1882), who had acquired the plates; with each plate page on its own guard, none of which are marked proof; each printed image 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" approx. size, mounted to the larger backing pages, which is a heavy white un-watermarked paper stock, another indication that these are most probably part of the Linnell 1874 print run; the book approx. 13 3/4" x 20"; the title page and about half of the plates with some foxing and spotting; mostly light, with other leaves having some spotting in the mounts only; bound in red morocco leather, corners and spine, boards in red cloth; gilt rules, five raised bands, gilt spine titles, top edge gilt, with the binders' stamp of Sangorski & Sutcliffe at front endpaper edge; some wear, spots and rubbing to the cloth & boards; the plates printed very well, good impressions; the India paper version showing the fine work in pure line done without preliminary etching, the work of Blake at his best; the binding in very good condition.. First Edition. Leather. Very Good.

A landmark work in American cartography, this is the very rare first edition of the first American state atlas, accompanied here by the companion statistical volume by Mills. The first work is one of the finest American state atlases ever produce: Mills benefited from the most up-to-date scientific surveying techniques available to draw highly accurate and descriptive maps of each district of South Carolina. The individual District maps are each a marvel of cartography, showing every region in great detail. The maps are drawn on a scale of 1:125,000 or two miles to the inch, with cities, towns, villages, swamps, woods, rivers, mountains, streams, lakes, and roads are all identified, and distances between towns and between towns and the coast are often given. The location of waterfalls (and their heights) are noted on rivers, and other important transportation information is given as well. Public houses, mills, colleges, blacksmith shops, cotton factories, courthouses, and other notable locations are also identified, as are the names of doctors and property owners. The atlas, therefore, was valuable not only for its cartographic qualities, but as an engine of economic development. "Mills's ATLAS OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA is a cartographic milestone because of its use of astronomical and scientific surveys for its district maps, its position as the first atlas of an individual state, and the impetus it gave to local and regional cartography in the early decades of the nineteenth century. It is also a tribute to the dedicated and self-sacrificing personal effort of Mills in carrying through to completion its compilation and publication. Monuments to Mills's architectural genius still survive in several American cities, but his South Carolina atlas is the sole record of his contribution to the history of cartography in the United States" (Ristow p.219). Ristow also points out that Mills' atlas was intimately associated with the trend in internal improvements that flourished in the United States in the first decades of the nineteenth century, and the maps in this atlas take great care to show the roads and rivers that were so important in facilitating transportation, communication, and commerce. In fact the creation of these maps was an outgrowth of this trend, as states commissioned engineers and surveyors to create detailed and current maps. South Carolina was late in the game, not commissioning a state map until 1815, when an authorization of $5,000 per year was made to pay for surveys to be conducted under the supervision of George Blackburn, a mathematics professor. Ultimately, twenty surveyors were charged with creating maps of the twenty-eight judicial districts of the state. Between 1817 and 1821 manuscript maps were created for each district, based on astronomical, geodetic, and topographic surveys and field work, and using the latest scientific techniques. In 182,2 John Wilson used the district maps to produce his map of the entire state of South Carolina, which was engraved by H.S. Tanner in Philadelphia. In 1825 each map was updated (or "improved") by Robert Mills in preparation for the publication of this atlas. The names of the surveyors are noted on each district map, except for the maps of the Darlington and Marlborough districts. Robert Mills was born in Charleston in 1781 and studied under James Hoban, the Irish-born architect who designed the White House. In Washington, Mills made the acquaintance of Thomas Jefferson and studied in Jefferson's extensive architecture library before going to work as an assistant to Benjamin Latrobe in 1803. By 1809 he was established as an architect in Philadelphia, doing work in Baltimore and Richmond as well, and among his designs is the Washington monument in Baltimore. Late in his career Mills also designed the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. as well as the Treasury Building. In 1820, back in residence in South Carolina, he was appointed to that state's department of Public Works. Aware of the surveying and cartographic work that had been undertaken in the state, he became determined to make the individual manuscript district maps more widely available by having them printed as an atlas. Mills undertook redrawing the district maps to make them uniform with each other. As part of this undertaking he traveled throughout the state, adding his personal observations and improvements to the maps. Mills engaged Henry Tanner of Philadelphia to print the maps for the atlas. Though dated 1825, the atlas was not actually published until 1826, priced $15 a copy, when, simultaneously, Mills also published the octavo STATISTICS OF SOUTH CAROLINA with a single folding map of the whole state which is printed from the same plate as the first map in the atlas (with a necessary change to the imprint).       1825. Book. Hardcover. 11 volumes. Edited by Francis Pearson Walesby. Frontispiece portrait in v. 1 engraved by W. H. Worthington from a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Oxford: Printed for W. Pickering, London; and Talboys and Wheeler, Oxford, 1825. 8¾" x 5½". Contents: v. 1. Essay on the Life and Genius of Dr. Johnson [by Arthur Murphy] Poems, and Tales; v. 2-3. The Rambler; v. 4. The Adventurer and Idler; v. 5. Miscellaneous Pieces; v. 6. Reviews, Political Tracts, and Lives of Eminent Persons; v. 7-8. Lives of the Poets; v. 9. Journey to the Hebrides, Tales of the Imagination, Prayers and Sermons; v. 10-11. Parliamentary Debates. Too poor to ever have been able to afford much in the way of a university education, Johnson was fortunate to have been born into the family of a bookseller, and apparently spent his idle hours in the book shop reading widely and copiously for his own edification. He did not record any notable literary success until he was nearly thirty, when writing for the Gentlemen’s Magazine he cleverly and insightfully reported on English Parliamentary Debates (verbatim transcription was forbidden) by writing of them as if they were literary fabrications from the Senate in Lilliput with the true speakers’ identities thinly disguised. In 1746, Johnson received one of the most remarkable commissions in the annals of English letters – this by-and-large untutored, untravelled, and impoverished pamphleteer entered into a contract for 1,500 guineas to produce a new dictionary of the English language. When it was finally published in two folio volumes in 1755, Johnson’s Dictionary quickly came to be seen as the standard work of its time, including as far as possible a lexicographical history of each word cited, and making extensive use of quotations to exemplify their usage. Johnson’s original approach to the meaning of language helped form an anthology of moral sayings and define the canon of literature. Later, his series of prefaces to a new standard edition of English poetry, issued in three parts in 1779, ’80, and ’81 and now known as "The Lives of the Poets," revealed Johnson’s extraordinary breadth of reading and insight, and set a new standard for literary biography. Visited in his youth by a variety of illnesses, Johnson suffered throughout his life from poor health, including what is now recognized as clinical depression, and uncontrollable spasms and verbal outbursts most likely stemming from Tourette’s syndrome. With his numerous physical defects and behavioral tics, he was often spoken of as a coarse, gross, unpleasant, and even monstrous person by many of his contemporaries. But in the Bicentennial year of his birth, Johnson has come to be recognized as the representative genius of his age, and the greatest figure in English letters since Shakespeare. Full contemporary brown calf with simple ruled boards and elaborately decorated spines. Merceron family bookplate with crest and motto to the front pastedowns of each volume. Some mild rubbing and some occasional minor scuffs to a few volumes; otherwise a very good to fine set. Courtney, W. P., D. S. Smith, R. W. Chapman, et al: A Bibliography of Samuel Johnson with Johnsonian Bibliography, A Supplement to Courtney, p. 166-167..
