Knight And Lacey, London 1825 - Clean and tight in lovely 19th century bindings of tan calf over marbled boards with leather title labels at spines in red and green with gilt lettering; raised bands and extensive gilt decoration at spines with armorial bookplate with coat of arms of John Croft Deverell to paste downs. Quite scarce as a complete set, particularly in this condition. George H. Borrow's first published work. Illustrations include portraits, courtroom scenes and a plan of a murder scene. Contents include accounts of many notable trials at Newgate between the years 1806 and 1825; charges include murder, fortune telling, etc. In April 1824, George Borrow, age 23, arrived in London to pursue his literary career. The publisher Richard Phillips proposed that Borrow compile a book for him: ". you could earn more money for me, sir, and consequently for yourself, by a compilation of Newgate lives and trials. [Lavengro, p. 204] The work was the set offerred here: Celebrated Trials, and Remarkable Cases of Criminal Jurisprudence, from the earliest records to the year 1825. Borrow, despitesome hesitation enjoyed the project: "Of all my occupations at this period I am free to confess I liked that of compiling the Newgate Lives and Trials the best; that is, after I had surmounted a kind of prejudice which I originally entertained [Lavengro, p. 216] As he said of the various accounts: "What struck me most with respect to these lives was the art which the writers, whoever they were, possessed of telling a plain story. It is no easy thing to tell a story plainly and distinctly by mouth; but to tell one on paper is difficult indeed, so many snares lie in the way. People are afraid to put down what is common on paper, they seek to embellish their narratives, as they think, by philosophic speculations and reflections; they are anxious to shine, and people who are anxious to shine can never tell a plain story." [Lavengro, p. 217] In the Lavengro account, it appears that ironically George Borrow didn’t make a profit on the the Celebrated Trials, but only covered his expenses. Additional shipping charge for this heavy multi-volume set. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Life of an Actor, The

1825. first edition. Acting is the Perfect Idiot's Profession" (Katherine Hepburn)."The Art of Acting Consists in Keeping People from Coughing" (Benjamin Franklin).EGAN, Pierce. LANE, Theodore, illustrator. The Life of an ActorÂ… Dedicated to Edmund Kean, Esq. The Poetical Descriptions by T. Greenwood. Embellished with Twenty-Seven Characteristic Scenes, Etched by Theodore Lane. Enriched also With Several Original Designs on Wood, Executed by Mr. Thompson. London: Printed for C.S. Arnold, 1825. First edition. Royal octavo (9 3/4 x 6 1/8 in; 247 x 158 mm.). xvi, 272 pp. Hand-colored aquatint frontispiece, woodcut vignette title-page, twenty-six fine hand-colored aquatint plates and eight woodcuts in the text. Bound ca. 1920 by Mercier Sr. de Cuzin (stamp signed on verso of front free endpaper) in three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards ruled in gilt. Spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. A spectacularly clean and large copy (Abbey's copy measured 9 3/8 x 5 3/4 inches) with the original printed paper covers and spine bound in. With the small leather bookplate of Bibliophile Réne Descamps-Scrive (1853-1925) on front blank.Originally published in nine parts, the work follows the vicissitudes of actor Peregrine Proteus, who quits his apprenticeship with a printer in a quest for thespian greatness. He achieves a modicum of success, falls prey to 'excesses and dissipation' and ends up in prison. Suitably chastened by adversity, he eventually rises, through his own character and talent - not to mention a fortunate matrimonial match and subsequent inheritance, to a position of eminence and prosperity in the theatrical community. The popular reception of Pierce Egan's Boxiana let to the serial publication of his famous Life in London, the success of which is described in the Dictionary of National Biography as "instantaneous and unprecedented', and the Life of an Actor is a derivative wok no doubt meant to capitalize on the popularity of its predecessors. It is the chief work of Theodore Lane (1800-1828), who subsequently produced illustrations for other books by Egan. The woodcut engravings by John Thompson (1785-1866) are highly esteemed by Abbey. "The book contains nine woodcutsÂ… all by John Thompson, perhaps the ablest exponent of the style of wood-engraving; he cut, in 1839, Mulready's design for the penny postage envelope, and in 1852 designed the figure of Britannia still in use on Bank of England notes; he engraved on wood many designs of Grandville, Johannot &c. for the great Paris publishers." (Abbey).Tooley 195. Abbey, Life 414. Prideaux. p. 308.

Monographia Pselaphidarum et Scydmænidarum Britanniæ: or, An essay on the British Species of the Genera Pselaphus, of Herbst, and Scydmænus, of Latreille. 8vo in 4s.

Norwich: S. Wilkin. 1825 - 14 hand-coloured plates; small paper flaw to p.3. Uncut in orig. olive-green cloth, paper label. Signature of F. Erasmus Wilson, March 1922, on leading f.e.p. A very nice copy. With a list of subscribers. A study, handsomely illustrated, of the various species of Pselaphidæ and Scydmænidæ beetles found in Britain. ?The author hopes that these remarks will be sufficient to shew that [these species] have not been hitherto sufficiently illustrated. He was led to investigate them rather by accident than by choice; but should it be objected that some more interesting tribe might have been selected, he may remark that however minute, these little beings are not without characters highly interesting to the admirer of nature: their remarkable palpi - the symmetry and neatness of their form - their polished armour, and singularity of appearance, are all sufficiently calculated to please and to interest.?         Memoirs of Samuel Pepys Esq F R S

London: Henry Colburn,, 1825. Secretary to the Admiralty in the Reigns of Charles II and James II, Comprising His Diary from 1659 to 1669, deciphered by the Rev. John Smith A.B. of St. John's College, Cambridge, from the original short-hand MS in the Pepysian Library, and a selection from his Private Correspondence. Edited by Richard, Lord Braybrooke. 2 volumes, large quarto (305 × 240 mm). Contemporary green half morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, raised bands, green cloth boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 12 plates, portraits, facsimiles, etc. Bookplate to front pastedowns, some mild offsetting to first title page otherwise pages nice and clean, minor restoration to joints, an excellent copy. First edition of this key historical record of Restoration London, which remained unprinted for more than 150 years after its original composition. The text was painstakingly deciphered from Pepys's shorthand by a penniless student who did not realise that the manual for the system, Thomas Shelton's Tutor to Tachygraphy (1642), was easily accessible in his own college library. Pepys's diary is the chief source for our knowledge of day-to-day life in Restoration London, but it is much more than just a record of quotidian life: "As a diarist he is simply the best there was, with the good fortune to be close to the centre of momentous events" (ODNB).

A Brief Sketch of the Life of Horace Carter, Who was Executed in Worcester, Dec. 7, 1825 for the Crime of Rape, Together with Remarks on Early Education.

Worcester [Mass.]: n. p., 1825. First edition.. Somewhat worn and crimped; stained throughout; a good, sound copy.. Unbound pamphlet rather roughly whip-stitched in an early hand along the spine, 8.38 x 5.25 inches, 16 pages. An uncommon account of a criminal life, shot through with equal parts remorse and self-justification: "I was born in Sturbridge in this State in 1799. My Father was an honest man but with sorrow I say, that the character of my mother was different. As soon as I was old enough, she encouraged me in petty thefts, and often sent me to steal fruit, green corn, and other like articles from the neighbor's fields. . . . I lived with my parents until I was nine years old, during which time I was never sent to school." Carter hires out his labor, falls in with bad company, drinks to excess and gambles. He becomes acquainted with the criminal Mrs. Bathsheba Fay, is jailed over a bond, later arrested over a borrowed coat, assaults a constable, is put to hard labor, etc., until late after a cold, wet night of drinking ardent spirits in bad company, "I came to the Poor House where I saw the light of a fire. I requested admission. I had no intention until after I had forced my way into the house, of committing the crime for which I am condemned.--The facts are already known, and I do not deny them. I was so much in liquor that I cannot tell whether I did actually commit the crime or not." The appended remarks note in part the "fact that by far the largest part of those who are publicly punished for the breach of human laws, are unable to read. This fact speaks volumes in praise of the system of free schools, existing in this Commonwealth, and many other of the American states. By this means, the salutary streams of knowledge are brought to the door of every dwelling; and every parent ought to be deemed a felon and punished as such, who suffers his children to grow up to manhood, without the knowledge of their duties as members of civil society and as accountable creatures. With an education Carter might have been a useful citizen." Instead, as a footnote remarks, "The unfortunate Carter, from the time he left prison till he was launched into eternity, manifested a careless indifference which was truly astonishing." AAS notes of its copy, "American Antiquarian Society copy inscribed (referring to the remarks on early education?): By May Newell, printer." This copy with the inscription in ink on the front wrapper, "David Whitney Jr's Property Read & Return this the Borrower must return this," with an additional inscription with his signature on the following page, "If is this loose / And you it find / Restore it me / For it is mine."         The Life of Nelson. Two Volumes.

1825. SOUTHEY, Robert. The Life of Nelson. Two volumes. viii, 264 ; viii, 288 pp. With two frontispieces. 8vo., 165 x 103 mm. Bound in full navy straight-grained morocco, French fillet borders on covers, spine gilt, red morocco labels, t.e.g. London: John Murray, 1825. New Edition of Robert Southey's esteemed biography of Nelson, written around the same time the author was appointed poet laureate of England. Southey's objective was to write a pocket edition on Nelson, "clear and concise enough to become a manual for the young sailor, which he may carry about with him" (author's preface). In this he was certainly successful. Renowned for its straight forward, no-nonsense narrative style, this is one of the poet's greatest prose works. Sir Humphrey Davy described this work as "an immortal monument raised by genius to valour." Hinges strengthened, some chips at the head of the spine of the second volume, but an excellent copy from the distinguished library of Calvin Bullock, with bookplate.

Vellum Manuscripts - (2) Lease Indentures for Wine Vaults

United Kingdom, 1825. Royal Tunbridge Wells, in the County of Kent, 1825-1826. TWO consecutive manuscript lease indentures on vellum, for the historic wine vaults in Royal Tunbridge Wells, the premises ultimately being leased from a wine merchant to an aristocrat, for a term of thirty-six years. These documents are very large, measuring 69 x 54cm and 57 x 30cm, respectively, each with original signatures, clerical annotations to verso, and bearing red wax seals. Both documents in very good, bright, and original condition, made in a neat hand. The wine vault described here dates to the 1700s, and is now the showroom of a fireplace retailer (The modern address for the vaults is 58 Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, TN48BB). A revelation of viticulture history in an affluent city whose early years remain little-known, comes forth in these two original and singular manuscript indentures, each signed in the original and bearing remarkable red wax seals. The wine vaults, wine rooms and premises in Tunbridge Wells, built and established in the 1700s, belonged to a London wine merchant named Mr. Thomas Thomas by the 1820s. At the time, Tunbridge Wells was a popular resort town for the wealthy and elite socialites, frequented by royalty. The first document is dated 29 December 1825, Mr. Thomas Thomas of Cooper Row in Crutched-Friars, London, a wine merchant, leasing to Mr. Edward Neal of Tunbridge Wells in Sussex, another wine merchant. The signature and red wax seal of the lessor is found on the bottom fold. Excerpts from the manuscript: "... All those premises consisting of two wine rooms and wine and other vaults and cellars adjoining situate and being in the Road leading from Tonbridge Wells aforesaid to Frant and attached to and connected and communicating with a certain messuage or tenement and other premises now in the possession or occupation of Crawford Esquire..." "... said rooms - vaults cellars and premises are now in the possession of the said Edward Neal and used by him for the purposes of his business. Together with the yard, ways, waters, watercourses, drains, paths, passages, lights, easements, advantages and appurtenances to the said premises..." "... entitled to the freehold and inheritance of the said premises... term of thirty-six years and three-quarters of another year... yearly rent or sum of fifty pounds..." "And moreover shall and will paint in a good and workmanlike manner the outside wood and ironwork... at least twice in oil colors in every seven years of the said term..." End excerpts. The second document, written only one week later, 3 January 1826, subsequently names Mr. Walter Sprott, gentleman, of Tunbridge Wells in Sussex, as the new lessee of the same wine vaults, rooms and premises, still owned by wine merchant Thomas Thomas who is again named herein. The formerly named lessee, Edward Neal, evidently repealed his rights and obligations by selling his lease agreement to Sprott for 200 pounds sterling, and a replacement thirty-six year lease indenture was drawn. This document bears the signatures of both parties, as well two red wax seals, one being an especially nice bust of the aristocrat. [The national archives, England, holds the will of Walter Sprott made in 1844, which would most likely name the heir to his estate and possibly the next successor to the present lease.] Excerpts from the manuscript: "This indenture made the third day of January in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and twenty six Between Edward Neal of Tunbridge Wells in the County of Kent wine merchant of the one part, and Walter Sprott of Tunbridge Wells in the County of Kent gentleman of the other part..." "...the said Thomas Thomas by virtue of every right power and authority in him..." "And whereas the said Walter Sprott hath contracted and agreed with the said Edward Neal for the purchase of the said rooms vaults cellars and premises comprised in the said Indenture of Lease for all the now residue term of the thirty-six years and three quarters of another year" "... in consideration of the sum of Two Hundred Pounds of lawful money current in England to the said Edward Neal" End excerpts. Today, Royal Tunbridge Wells (often shortened to Tunbridge Wells) is a large affluent town in western Kent, England. It is situated about 40 miles south-east of central London by road. By the early nineteenth century Tunbridge Wells had become a place for the well-to-do to visit and make their homes. It became a fashionable resort town again following visits by the Duchess of Kent in the 1820s, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1834 and 1835 The town benefited from a new estate on Mount Pleasant and the building of the Trinity church in 1827. Improvements, gas lighting, and police service attracted new population, totalling 9,100 residents by 1837. . Very Good.
