Journal of a Residence and Travels in Colombia, During the Years 1823 and 1824.

2 vols. London: Printed for Henry Colburn, 1825. 2 vols., 8vo, xvi, 524; viii, 515 pp. Two hand-colored frontispieces, one engraved, the second an aquatint; two large folding maps (duplicates). Contemporary full green polished calf, backstrips gilt with red morocco labels, covers decoratively bordered in gilt and blind, board edges and turn-ins gilt-rolled, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, green silk page-markers. Gift inscription dated 1836 on flyleaf. The errata slip mentioned in Abbey is not present. Bindings lightly rubbed along joints, with a few dings to the backstrips; light offsetting from frontispieces on to title-pages; a handsome set, more than complete with the extra map. First Edition. Captain Cochrane, born into a distinguished (and notorious) Royal Navy clan, took a two-year leave from the Navy to advise the Colombian pearl fishery how to protect its divers from sharks, to travel around the country, and to study possibilities for copper mining. The breadth of his curiosity was apparently limitless and he records his adventures in absorbing detail, from observations of fandango dancers and muleteers, to a very early description of the indigenous method for extracting dart poison from frogs (probably the Golden Poison Frog). The two frontispieces, showing "The Author in the Travelling Costume of the Country" and a "Precipitous Descent of a Cordillera of the Andes in the Province of Choco," are outstanding. One wonders how the second copy of the very good map, compiled and engraved by the remarkable Sidney Hall, was acquired. Abbey, Travel, 718. Sabin 14072.

        A Practical Treatise on Rail-Roads,

London: Knight and Lacey, J. and R. Akenhead, Westley and Tyrell, Dublin,, 1825. and interior communications in general; with original experiments, and tables of the comparative value of canals and rail-roads. Octavo. Original drab brown boards, paper spine label, uncut. Engraved folding frontispiece of a locomotive, 5 other engraved folding plates by Fenner after Johnson or Read after Galloway (2 of locomotives, two of track, another of winding gear). Front joint cracked but sound, a little loss of surface paper around spine, light bump at head and tail. An excellent copy, crisp and clean, with the 8pp. of publisher's preliminary advertisements. First edition of this foundation work on railways, scarce in the original boards and in such exemplary condition. Nicholas Wood (1795-1865) was a civil and mining engineer who was a colliery manager at Killingworth, Northumberland, when his book was published, which coincided with the opening of the Stockton and Darlington railway. "George Stephenson was also at Killingworth at that time. He was fourteen years older than Wood, and the two were soon drawn into a lasting friendship by their common interests and ambitions. It was a tribute to Stephenson's opinion of him that his son Robert was apprenticed to Wood from 1819 to 1821 at Killingworth. Wood assisted Stephenson in the development of his safety lamp, which was first tested in 1815. He was closely associated with Stephenson in his experiments with steam locomotives, and in 1821 accompanied him to Darlington, where they met Edward Pease and discussed the projected Stockton?Darlington railway line. As a result of his experience and observations Wood was able to publish in 1825 A Practical Treatise on Rail-Roads, and Interior Communication in General, a classic work of early railway literature, in which he discussed the various types of 'motive power' then in use: self-acting planes, fixed steam-engine planes, horses, and locomotive steam engines. The work appeared in three subsequent editions, in 1831, 1832, and 1838, considerably enlarged and brought up to date. In 1827 Wood's reputation in railway matters was such that he was invited to give evidence before committees of both houses of parliament on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway Bill. In 1829 he was one of the three judges for the Rainhill locomotive trials on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, won by the Stephensons' Rocket. In 1845 he joined the 'battle of the gauges', taking sides with the Stephensons and the 'narrow-gauge' lobby" (ODNB).

- Folio (28.5 x 18.5 cm.), disbound. Caption title. Light browning. Overall in good to very good condition. Early manuscript foliation in ink. Five-line annotation at the end comments on the proposed law. Broadside. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. A group of young Chileans ("Un Sociedad de Jóvenes Republicanos") invites their compatriots to support a new tax law proposed on January 7, 1825 by José Miguel Infante, the text of which is reproduced here.Infante (1778-1844) was one of the few residents of colonial Chile to be well versed in the sort of Enlightenment philosophers who had been forbidden under Spanish rule. An early proponent of independence, he became one of the foremost political theorists in the new nation. Under José Miguel Carrera he was regent for the Junta Gobernativa and under O'Higgins was briefly secretary of the Treasury. Soon he turned against O'Higgins, and helped force the latter's resignation in 1823. As a judge in the superior court Infante abolished slavery in Chile. From November 1825 to March 1826, he served as Chile's supreme director. In 1826, when the Constitution of 1823 was abrogated, Senator Infante laid before Congress a scheme to turn Chile's government from a strong central government to a loose federation, on the model of the United States. Infante and his supporters managed to pass a group of laws that gave Chile a federal organization, circumventing the constitutional assembly. The result was a chaotic but short-lived interregnum known as "The Anarchy." The constitutional assembly dissolved itself in 1827 and a new constitution was approved the following year. Infante refused to acknowledge the Constitution of 1828, and largely retired from public life.*** Briseño I, 177. Not located in CCPBE. Not located in Rebiun. Not located in Copac.         Appeal of One Half the Human Race, Women, Against the Pretensions of the Other Half, Men,

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, and Wheatley and Adlard,, 1825. to Retain them in Political, and Thence Civil and Domestic, Slavery; in Reply to a Paragraph of Mr. Mill's Celebrated "Article on Government". Octavo (217 × 135 mm). Original drab green boards neatly rebacked with the original drab brown diaper-grain cloth spine laid down, original printed paper label (rubbed). Old library number on spine, surface wear to boards, title page skilfully repaired at head and gutter, a couple of leaves roughly opened (with small loss from blank margins), scattered foxing and pale marginal dampstaining. First edition of one of the most important works in the history of feminism and "one of the classics of early nineteenth-century feminist literature" (ODNB). "No book published before his time on this subject, even the famous work of Mary Wollstonecraft, is at once so broad and comprehensive and so direct and practical as Thompson's Appeal" (Richard K. P. Pankhurst, William Thompson: Britain's Pioneer Socialist, Feminist, and Co-operator, 1954). Not until John Stuart Mill's Subjection of Women (1869) was the argument again stated with such force. William Thompson (1775-1833), socialist and economist, was born into an Irish ascendancy family in Cork. His Introductory Letter is addressed to his silent collaborator, the philosopher Anna Wheeler (1785?-1848), a rebel from the Anglo-Irish gentry. "I long hesitated to arrange our common ideas", writes Thompson, "anxious that the hand of a woman should have the honour of raising from the dust that neglected banner which a woman's hand [i.e., Wollstonecraft's] nearly thirty years ago unfolded boldly, in face of the prejudices of thousands of years, and for which a woman's heart bled, and her life was all but the sacrifice ? I hesitated to write". Their work was provoked by James Mill's dismissal of political rights for women in his famous Article on Government. Mill argued that almost all women were represented adequately in political matters by their fathers or husbands, and that it was therefore quite unnecessary for them to enjoy formal political rights. This statement by one of the leading Benthamites - "among the Utilitarians ... second only to Bentham himself" - alarmed and horrified Thompson and Wheeler.

Nlle Hollande: Port-Jackson. Sauvages des Montagnes Bleues

Paris 1825 - Handcoloured stipple engraving, 150 x 270mm. A marvellous engraved portrait of an Aboriginal elder of the Blue Mountains named Karadra and his companion Hara-o, after an original study by Alphonse Pellion; Karadra, the older man on the right, holds a clay tobacco pipe in his hand. The engraving was printed for the Atlas Historique of the official account of the voyage.Pellion (1796-1868) was one of the voyage artists with Freycinet on the Uranie. Much like Nicolas-Martin Petit, his famous predecessor on the Baudin voyage, Pellion is known for his sensitive portrayals of the Australian Aborigines. Pellion made two trips to the Blue Mountains in late 1819, on the second occasion joining a large group which included Freycinet himself. On this occasion Pellion earned the ire of his companions when he suddenly fired upon a curious bird, frightening his horse which bolted with its saddle pack filled with 'a considerable number of the most useful things, such as an artificial horizon, drawing-paper, pencils, paints etc.' After a long and tedious search the horse was given up as lost. The French party was assisted by the explorer and pastoralist William Lawson. Freycinet describes their encounter with the two Aborigines in the Blue Mountains, the elderly Karadra being cared for by a younger companion: 'Mr Lawson recognised this old man as Karadra, the supreme chief of this part of the mountain. According to Mr Lawson there was nobody who had proved more dangerous to the English, who had died in considerable numbers at his hands, and yet nobody had been able to catch him in the act. Over a long period, the man had presented a peaceable face to the colonists. He made himself useful to them, either by waging war on the primitive peoples of the interior when they wished to approach the Nepean, or by warning the English our-stations of their positions on occasions when he was not strong enough to turn them back without assistance?'

Two suites of 12 lithographed plates, the first set of 12 in black-and-white (several a little foxed) and the second duplicate set in fine original coloring. 7, [1] pp. Small folio, orig. printed blue upper wrapper bound in orig. reddish-orange glazed boards, covers with a gilt border, spine gilt, a.e.g. Munich: J.M. Herrmann, n.d. [but ca. 1825]. This work describes the first synagogue built in Munich; it is the presentation copy given to the royal house of Bavaria, specially bound and with an extra suite of hand-colored plates. This is a rare book and our copy, with the additional set of plates, appears to be absolutely unique. In 1790 there were only 127 Jews living in Munich. They earned their livelihood as contractors for the army and the royal mint, merchants dealing in luxury wares and livestock, moneylenders, and peddlers. Since there was no legal basis for their residence in Munich, they did not have the right to practice their religion, and every year they had to pay a special tax to enable them to observe Sukkot. In 1805 a "Regulation for Munich Jewry" was issued (it formed the basis for the Bavarian Judenmatrikel of 1813); among other privileges, the Jews were permitted to inherit the right of domicile, to conduct services, and to reside in all parts of the city. During the Napoleonic Wars, the number of Jews was augmented by immigrants, and by 1814 there were 451 Jews in the city. Two years later, the Jewish community was formally organized and in the same year the community was given permission to establish a cemetery. In 1824 a permit was issued for the construction of a synagogue. The synagogue on the Westenriederstrasse was the first structure initiated by the newly empowered Jewish community. The architect Jean Baptiste Métivier (1781-1857), was royal building inspector who designed many palaces for the nobility as well as furniture. He favored a more classical style for the building and believed it should serve as a model for future synagogues in the Bavarian kingdom. He was supported by the King but his ideas were not carried out as later synagogues were built more in the oriental style. The Westenriederstrasse synagogue and the St. Emmeram Castle in Regensburg were Métivier's most important commissions. The synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938 during Kristallnacht. A fine deluxe copy of a very uncommon book. From the Wittelsbach library of the dukes and kings of Bavaria. ❧ Pfister II, 2100-2111. Thieme-B., XXIV, 439. Lentner 1892. .

The Company was offered vast tracts of land beyond existing settled areas, and opened up lands previously unseen by European eyes.       London: Printed for C.S. Arnold, 1825. - "Acting is the Perfect Idiot's Profession" (Katherine Hepburn)."The Art of Acting Consists in Keeping People from Coughing" (Benjamin Franklin).EGAN, Pierce. LANE, Theodore, illustrator. The Life of an Actor Dedicated to Edmund Kean, Esq. The Poetical Descriptions by T. Greenwood. Embellished with Twenty-Seven Characteristic Scenes, Etched by Theodore Lane. Enriched also With Several Original Designs on Wood, Executed by Mr. Thompson. London: Printed for C.S. Arnold, 1825. First edition. Royal octavo (9 3/4 x 6 1/8 in; 247 x 158 mm.). xvi, 272 pp. Hand-colored aquatint frontispiece, woodcut vignette title-page, twenty-six fine hand-colored aquatint plates and eight woodcuts in the text. Bound ca. 1920 by Mercier Sr. de Cuzin (stamp signed on verso of front free endpaper) in three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards ruled in gilt. Spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. A spectacularly clean and large copy (Abbey's copy measured 9 3/8 x 5 3/4 inches) with the original printed paper covers and spine bound in. With the small leather bookplate of Bibliophile Réne Descamps-Scrive (1853-1925) on front blank.Originally published in nine parts, the work follows the vicissitudes of actor Peregrine Proteus, who quits his apprenticeship with a printer in a quest for thespian greatness. He achieves a modicum of success, falls prey to 'excesses and dissipation' and ends up in prison. Suitably chastened by adversity, he eventually rises, through his own character and talent - not to mention a fortunate matrimonial match and subsequent inheritance, to a position of eminence and prosperity in the theatrical community. The popular reception of Pierce Egan's Boxiana let to the serial publication of his famous Life in London, the success of which is described in the Dictionary of National Biography as "instantaneous and unprecedented', and the Life of an Actor is a derivative wok no doubt meant to capitalize on the popularity of its predecessors. It is the chief work of Theodore Lane (1800-1828), who subsequently produced illustrations for other books by Egan. The woodcut engravings by John Thompson (1785-1866) are highly esteemed by Abbey. "The book contains nine woodcuts all by John Thompson, perhaps the ablest exponent of the style of wood-engraving; he cut, in 1839, Mulready's design for the penny postage envelope, and in 1852 designed the figure of Britannia still in use on Bank of England notes; he engraved on wood many designs of Grandville, Johannot &c. for the great Paris publishers."         Memoirs of Samuel Pepys, Esq. F.R.S. Secretary to the Admiralty in the Reign of Charles II and James II. Comprising His Diary from 1659 to 1669, Deciphered by the Rev. John Smith, A.B. of St. John's College, Cambridge, from the Original Short-Hand Ms. in the Pepysian Library, and a Selection from His Private Correspondence (in 2 Vols.)

London: Henry Colburn, New Burlington Street, 1825. Full leather. Very Good +. A handsome 1st edition of Samuel Pepys' famous diary, which remains one of the great sources for the study of Restoration England. Complete in 2 thick quarto volumes, with 12 engraved plates, including a folding map. Bound in a gilt-edged full leather (dark-brown calf), with ornate gilt-titling and tooling at the compartments. Boards lightly rubbed at edges and corners, very light foxing --and just a bit of offsetting opposite the plates-- thruout the text. Both volumes tight, well-preserved and solidly VG+. This seminal diary, which Pepys wrote from 1660 to 1669, presents a fascinating picture of the official and upper-class life in Restoration London, with vivid, honest accounts of ordinary as well as great events, including the Plague and the Great Fire of London. The diary went unprinted for more than 150 years after its original composition because of its coded shorthand. For 3 years, the Rev. John Smith painstakingly deciphered the diary, all the while unaware that Pepys had taken his code from Thomas Shelton's "Tutor to Tachygraphy" (1642), which sat only a few shelves above the diary in Pepys' library. "It is a document of extraordinary interest, on account both of the light that its sincere narrative throws on the author's own lovable character, and of the vivid picture that it gives of everyday contemporary life, of the administration of the navy, and of the ways of the court". OCEL. NCBEL II:1583. GROLIER ENGLISH HUNDRED 75.
