The Life of Nelson. Two Volumes.

1825. SOUTHEY, Robert. The Life of Nelson. Two volumes. viii, 264 ; viii, 288 pp. With two frontispieces. 8vo., 165 x 103 mm. Bound in full navy straight-grained morocco, French fillet borders on covers, spine gilt, red morocco labels, t.e.g. London: John Murray, 1825. New Edition of Robert Southey's esteemed biography of Nelson, written around the same time the author was appointed poet laureate of England. Southey's objective was to write a pocket edition on Nelson, "clear and concise enough to become a manual for the young sailor, which he may carry about with him" (author's preface). In this he was certainly successful. Renowned for its straight forward, no-nonsense narrative style, this is one of the poet's greatest prose works. Sir Humphrey Davy described this work as "an immortal monument raised by genius to valour." Hinges strengthened, some chips at the head of the spine of the second volume, but an excellent copy from the distinguished library of Calvin Bullock, with bookplate.

Vellum Manuscripts - (2) Lease Indentures for Wine Vaults

United Kingdom, 1825. Royal Tunbridge Wells, in the County of Kent, 1825-1826. TWO consecutive manuscript lease indentures on vellum, for the historic wine vaults in Royal Tunbridge Wells, the premises ultimately being leased from a wine merchant to an aristocrat, for a term of thirty-six years. These documents are very large, measuring 69 x 54cm and 57 x 30cm, respectively, each with original signatures, clerical annotations to verso, and bearing red wax seals. Both documents in very good, bright, and original condition, made in a neat hand. The wine vault described here dates to the 1700s, and is now the showroom of a fireplace retailer (The modern address for the vaults is 58 Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, TN48BB). A revelation of viticulture history in an affluent city whose early years remain little-known, comes forth in these two original and singular manuscript indentures, each signed in the original and bearing remarkable red wax seals. The wine vaults, wine rooms and premises in Tunbridge Wells, built and established in the 1700s, belonged to a London wine merchant named Mr. Thomas Thomas by the 1820s. At the time, Tunbridge Wells was a popular resort town for the wealthy and elite socialites, frequented by royalty. The first document is dated 29 December 1825, Mr. Thomas Thomas of Cooper Row in Crutched-Friars, London, a wine merchant, leasing to Mr. Edward Neal of Tunbridge Wells in Sussex, another wine merchant. The signature and red wax seal of the lessor is found on the bottom fold. Excerpts from the manuscript: "... All those premises consisting of two wine rooms and wine and other vaults and cellars adjoining situate and being in the Road leading from Tonbridge Wells aforesaid to Frant and attached to and connected and communicating with a certain messuage or tenement and other premises now in the possession or occupation of Crawford Esquire..." "... said rooms - vaults cellars and premises are now in the possession of the said Edward Neal and used by him for the purposes of his business. Together with the yard, ways, waters, watercourses, drains, paths, passages, lights, easements, advantages and appurtenances to the said premises..." "... entitled to the freehold and inheritance of the said premises... term of thirty-six years and three-quarters of another year... yearly rent or sum of fifty pounds..." "And moreover shall and will paint in a good and workmanlike manner the outside wood and ironwork... at least twice in oil colors in every seven years of the said term..." End excerpts. The second document, written only one week later, 3 January 1826, subsequently names Mr. Walter Sprott, gentleman, of Tunbridge Wells in Sussex, as the new lessee of the same wine vaults, rooms and premises, still owned by wine merchant Thomas Thomas who is again named herein. The formerly named lessee, Edward Neal, evidently repealed his rights and obligations by selling his lease agreement to Sprott for 200 pounds sterling, and a replacement thirty-six year lease indenture was drawn. This document bears the signatures of both parties, as well two red wax seals, one being an especially nice bust of the aristocrat. [The national archives, England, holds the will of Walter Sprott made in 1844, which would most likely name the heir to his estate and possibly the next successor to the present lease.] Excerpts from the manuscript: "This indenture made the third day of January in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and twenty six Between Edward Neal of Tunbridge Wells in the County of Kent wine merchant of the one part, and Walter Sprott of Tunbridge Wells in the County of Kent gentleman of the other part..." "...the said Thomas Thomas by virtue of every right power and authority in him..." "And whereas the said Walter Sprott hath contracted and agreed with the said Edward Neal for the purchase of the said rooms vaults cellars and premises comprised in the said Indenture of Lease for all the now residue term of the thirty-six years and three quarters of another year" "... in consideration of the sum of Two Hundred Pounds of lawful money current in England to the said Edward Neal" End excerpts. Today, Royal Tunbridge Wells (often shortened to Tunbridge Wells) is a large affluent town in western Kent, England. It is situated about 40 miles south-east of central London by road. By the early nineteenth century Tunbridge Wells had become a place for the well-to-do to visit and make their homes. It became a fashionable resort town again following visits by the Duchess of Kent in the 1820s, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1834 and 1835 The town benefited from a new estate on Mount Pleasant and the building of the Trinity church in 1827. Improvements, gas lighting, and police service attracted new population, totalling 9,100 residents by 1837. . Very Good.

[Paris], 1825. Proof before numbering, 290 x 420 mm., a fine rich impression on wove paper, "86" added in manuscript to upper right; very good. A beautiful view of the house of "Kraïmokou" in Hawaii, showing the making of tapa in the foreground. This proof before numbering represents the last stage in the printing process, before the Historique album itself was printed, and is known to have come from the Freycinet family archive: its presence there is no surprise, given how closely Freycinet is known to have supervised the production of the official account of the voyage, and the close watch he kept on all details of the illustrations particularly.Kraïmokou was an important liaison with the French when they visited the island in 1819, and featured heavily in the published account because he expressly requested that he be baptised by the cleric on board, Quelen. As the caption here confirms, Kraïmokou was the "chief Minister" of the King.

A series of three views of the Botanic Garden on the island of St. Vincent, West Indies

[Glasgow: printed for R.Griffin & Company, 1825. Set of three uncoloured lithographs, drawn on stone by J. Watson (?), from original drawings by L. Guilding, one cut to the edge of the image with loss to the artist's name, two cut to the edge of the image, all on early pink paper mounts within ink ruled borders. A possibly unique series of three very early lithographic proofs of views of the island of St. Vincent in the West Indies. These fine views, after original drawings by the naturalist Lansdown Guilding, are uncoloured proofs of the three views that were published, hand-coloured, in Guilding's An Account of the Botanic Garden in the Island of St. Vincent , published in Glasgow in 1825. The fourth plate, a plan of the gardens rather than a view, was also included in the published work according to Abbey. Only one of the present images is captioned but, according to Abbey, the images are as follows: 1. House of the Superintendent [of the Botanic Garden] 2. [View of the Botanic Garden St. Vincent. / Taken from the Superintendent's House] 3. [Botanic Garden, / from the bottom of the Central Walk] Abbey quotes from a contemporary prospectus concerning the distribution of the work on the island, which notes that `only a few copies have been sent out for sale, but Mr. Draper will receive at the Gazette Office the names of those who are disposed to encourage the Bookseller who printed it' BM (NH) II, p.750; Cf.         Novo divertimento, para meio quarto de hora.

Lisbon, Na Impressão de João Nunes Esteves , 1825. - 8°, contemporary orange-and-purple patterned wrappers over printer's waste (rubbed at edges). Woodcut of a lyre on title page. In very good to fine condition. Contemporary ink signature at foot of title page ("M. Silva"?). 20 pp. *** Second edition. First published in 1824. Both editions appear to be rare. Porbase lists the 1824 edition, supposedly with only 16 pp. [our guess is that as is the case with the Houghton Library copy, all others said to contain 16 pp. actually have p. 20 wrongly numbered 16], and with a different license at the foot of the title page: "Com licença da Real Comissão de Censura." In the present edition it reads, "Com Licença da Meza do Desembargo do Paço."In the preface (pp. 3-4), the author laments the decreasing quality of Portuguese literature, and explains that he is offering these sixteen sonnets only as a mild diversion. The four sonnets on pp. 16-19 lament the behavior of the Brazilians: "Da ruel Anarquia a effervescenciaNa America soltou toda a impiedade ." and again:"Gentes do Rio, Gentes da Bahia,Do Pará, Maranhão, e Pernambuco,Onde estão as Chulices, e o Batuco,Que tanto no Brazil nos attrahia?"José Daniel Rodrigues da Costa (1757-1832), a native of Leira, was a prolific writer of essays, poetry, and dramas: his works (the earliest of which dates to 1777) were very popular and often reprinted during his lifetime. As an Arcadian poet, he wrote under the name Josino Leirense. His narrative poem @O balão dos habitantes da lua (1819) is considered the first Portuguese work of science fiction. Oliveira Barata finds in Rodrigues da Costa an observant witness of his turbulent time: "Autor de uma produção vasta e desigual, o seu testemunho literário revela-se de particular importância pelo fresco impressivo que consegue transmitir-nos do conturbado período de charneira entre os finais de Setecentos e os inícios de Oitocentos." Innocêncio uncharacteristically declines to catalogue all the author's works: "Parece-me desnecessario além de difficil, apresentar aqui um catalogo geral de todas as suas producções." Costa eventually became a fervent supporter of D. Miguel, who granted him a pension.*** Fonseca, @Aditamentos p. 229 (the 1824 edition only). Not in Biblioteca Pública de Braga, "Catálogo do Fundo Barca-Oliveira" which lists 22 titles by this author. On Rodrigues da Costa, see Innocêncio IV, 304-5; XII, 295; Álvaro Manuel Machado in @Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, p. 150; José Oliveira Barata in @Biblos, I, 1335-6; @Dicionário cronológico de autores portugueses, I, 569-70 (giving Rodriguese da Costa's date of birth as 1755). Porbase locates a single copy of the 1824 edition only, at the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra). No edition located in Copac. This edition not located in KVK, which cites only the single copy of the 1824 edition cited by Porbase (44 databases searched). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
