Observations on the anatomy of the duck-billed animal of New South Wales, the Ornithorynchus paradoxus of naturalists [AND] Observations on the organs of digestion and their appendages, and on the organs of respiration and circulation, in the Ornithorynchus paradoxus [AND] On the kidneys, urinary bladder, and organs of generation, in the male of the Ornithorynchus paradoxus.

Edinburgh, Adam Black, 1824. 8vo (20.8 x 13.4 cm). 15+6+24 pp., three engraved plates. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt lines and title. Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges.= Three early accounts on the anatomy and morphology of one of Australia's most famous mammals: the duck-billed Platypus, then a still quite mysterious animal, by Robert Knox. The three plates show the "poison gland and duct in the foot" (it is the only poisonous mammal), the "complex clavicle and scapulae", and the "organs of generation in the male". On page 27, Knox remarked "It is well known that the specimens of this very extraordinary animal first brought to Europe were considered by many as impositions. They reached England by vessels which had navigated the Indian seas, a circumstance in itself sufficient to rouse the suspicions of the scientific naturalist, aware of the monstrous impostures which the artful Chinese had so frequently practised on European adventurers...". Contained in volume 5(1) of the 'Memoirs of the Wernerian Natural History Society', together with several unrelated papers, as well as Knox' two accounts "of the foramen centrale of the retina, generally called the "Foramen of Soemmering", as seen in the eyes of certain reptiles", with a fine plate. Boards extremities somewhat rubbed and worn; old stamp on title page. A few marginalia in the index (not in Knox's paper). A very good copy. Rare. Not in Ferguson.

Compilate…dell'Avvocato Filippo Maria Renazzi. Finely engraved frontis. port. of Zabaglia (margins a little foxed), engraved vignettes on Italian & Latin titles, a large engraved headpiece, & 62 fine engraved plates (ten are folding). 4 p.l., xxix, [1], 46, [4], 48 pp. Text in both Italian and Latin. Large folio (505 x 375 mm.), fine Roman green sheep maroquiné with covers richly gilt in a panel design (a few scuff marks & defects), flat spine richly gilt (ends of spine a little worn), probably bound by the "Pope Gregory XVI binder." Rome: C. Puccinelli, 1824. Second edition, with important additions, of this finely illustrated engineering book. The first edition appeared in 1743. Zabaglia (1664-1750), "master mason of the Fabric of St. Peter's," was one of the foremost engineers and mechanics of his time. He was responsible for the maintenance of St. Peter's in Rome and designed the scaffolding and other devices used for its decoration and repair. The scaffolds - both ground and suspension - were extraordinary temporary structures designed to support, at the great heights of the basilica, the workers, equipment, materials, and machines necessary for restoration works, mosaic and painting decorations, the installation of statues, as well as for placing the iron hoops in the dome to stabilize cracks. Zabaglia made important advances in the technique used to graft and join wooden beams to assemble very large scaffolds and machines. He also founded a "School of Practical Mechanics." The handsome plates in this work depict Zabaglia's inventions including hoists, lifting machines, various kinds of scaffolds, machinery, tools, mosaics, artists at work, men working in a quarry, the transportation of marble and stone, the transportation and lifting of the Vatican obelisk by Fontana in the late 16th century, Zabaglia's transportation of the great obelisk of Augustus, etc. Our edition is enriched by eight new plates depicting the scaffolds made by Zabaglia's most skillful pupils, including Pietro Albertini and Angelo Paraccini. Added is a biography of Zabaglia with a detailed account of his other engineering achievements. A most handsome copy, finely bound. ? Dibner, Moving the Obelisks (1991). For the binder , see Cat. della Mostra Legature papali da Eugenio IV a Paolo VI (Rome: 1977), no. 284, tav. 204.

        Geological Map of Durham..

Folding engraved map (520 x 595 mm.) in fifteen sections, finely handcolored, backed with linen as issued (two sections also backed with marbled board as issued), preserved in the orig. marbled card slip-case (a little worn), orig. yellow printed paper label on upper cover. London: Published by J. Cary, March 1st 1824. First edition of William Smith's geological map of Durham, one in a series of county maps produced by Smith, each separately issued, which were the first detailed geological maps of specific areas. Smith's individual maps are extremely rare on the market. Smith produced the first geological map of England and Wales in 1815, which contained "an amazing amount of correct detail" (D.S.B.) and was the basis for all the geological maps that followed. In 1819 he began the publication of a geological atlas of England and Wales. Published in parts over five years, it remained unfinished, containing twenty-one maps of various English counties. "All the county maps published contain much more information than was shown on Smith's large map of 1815, and indicate that during the intervening years he had done much to increase his knowledge. The maps are based on Cary's county maps, and are headed 'By W. Smith, Mineral Surveyor.' Each map measures 21 ½ inches by 19 1/4 inches [across the ruled border]; the scale varies slightly but averages 3 miles to an inch."-Sheppard, William Smith: His Maps and his Memoirs (1920), p. 155. The map of Durham appeared in the sixth and last part (1824), and was also issued separately, as here. The title above appears in the upper margin; another title is given in a circular tablet in the lower left corner: "A New Map of Durham, divided into Wards, exhibiting its Roads, Rivers, Parks, &c. By John Cary Engraver. 1824." "One of his significant achievements was the identification of the presence of coal in the eastern parts of County Durham, beneath the overlying Magnesian Limestone. The advice he gave to the landowners there led to the establishment of new collieries, resulting in the construction of port and dock facilities at both Hartlepool and Seaham Harbour during the 1830s; both ports were connected by rail to the new mines."-Skempton et al., eds., A Biographical Dictionary of Civil Engineers, p. 639. On this copy of the map the railways in the south-east of the county have been added later in manuscript. Fine copy. ? Davis, "William Smith's Geological Atlas and the Later History of the Plates," in J. Soc. Bib. of Nat. Hist., Vol. 2, pp. 388-95-"The maps were sold separately in sheets or mounted to fold into a cover bearing a special yellow printed label for each county." Eyles, "William Smith (1769-1839): a Bibliography" in J. Soc. Bib. of Nat. Hist., Vol. 5, pp. 87-109, no. 33.

Sketches and Scenery in Angus and Mearns, Drawn From Nature, and Upon Stone.

Montrose: John Smith, c.1824. - Oblong folio; 350 x 500mm. pp. 3; 20 engraved plates. Complete in four parts as issued in the original printed wrappers, with the sheet of explanatory notes to the first three parts [possibly not issued in the final part]. Parts 2 - 4 have been strengthened on the spine with old paper, probably contemporaneously, and possibly as issued. The first two parts were printed by Forrester and Morrison, but Paterson was obviously unhappy with the results. He turned to Hullmandel for the final two parts and these engravings are sharper and clearer than the earlier efforts. The plates are: I. Craighall Rattray, Glammis Castle, Cortachy Castle, Fasque House, Castle and Town of Brechin Town; II. Dun House, Loch of Lintrathen, Edzell Castle, Town of Montrose, Denfinella; III. Abbey of Arbroath, Kinnaird Castle, Blackhall, Rossie Castle, Dundee From the River; IV. Brechin Castle, Fotheringham House, Bridge of Die, Montrose from Langley Park, Crathas. Scarce. No copy traced at auction. Abbey 497 with only the third part. Copac lists the National Library of Scotland as holding 7 prints only, with no text or wrappers at 300 x 480mm. According to the front wrappers two editions were available; the Royal Edition, presumably as the NLS part set, and the Super Royal Edition, as here. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Breslau, 26. I. 1824.

      C. L. F. Panckoucke,, Paris: 1824 - The atlas volume only of M. Panckoucke's translation of the work by Tacitus, the atlas illustrating the Frenchman's views. The plates are varied; some are of classical Roman statuary, others are quite unexpected, especially the plate "Guerrier des Terres Australes" which is drawn directly from Francois Peron's "Voyages aux Terres Australes", published the same year (1824). The letterpress, which is in French, draws attention to the similarity in coiffure and facial paint between the Australian aborigines and the Sueves and Aries, ancient peoples of Germany. The Sueves populated an area in NW Spain and Portugal. Their custom was to plait their hair and secure it with a knot. The caption to this print, drawn and engraved by Ambrose Tardieu, "Guerrier des Terres Australes, Coiffe comme les Sueves, et peint de rouge et de noir comme les Aries, peuple de la Germanie." In Peron's "Voyage" the plate is by Nicolas Petit, plate XVIII, titled "Nouvelle-Hollande Cour-Rou-Bari-Gal". The other most unusual plate is one of amber, illustrating six stones, both raw and cut as jewelry, some occluded with insect corpses. Not found on Trove (a digital edition of the text only is available). See OCLC: 6914012 for text & atlas volume.4to, title, 12 plates, some copper engraved, others stipple, with letterpress, with the original tissue guards. Waterstain along the bottom margin, scattered foxing. Four of the plates are beautifully colored, "Medailles Romaines (plate 7); "Guerrier des Terres Australes" (plate 8); "Le Succin" (amber, plate 11); and the map of Germany "La Germanie" by Ambrose Tardieu, 1824 (plate 12). See OCLC: 6914012 quotes the atlas has 11 plates; this atlas contains 12 plates. 19th century rebind with half red cloth and red and black marbled paper, black and gilt title label, marbled end papers. La Germanie. Traduite de Tacite... Avec un Nouveau Commentaire extrait de Montesquieu et des principaux publicistes; ATLAS volume only

Paris: C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1824. First edition. The atlas volume only of M. See OCLC: 6914012 for text & atlas volume. 4to, title, 12 plates, some copper engraved, others stipple, with letterpress, with the original tissue guards.

Draft of a Letter to the Catholic Association in Bentham's Hand.

1824 - Draft of an Unsent Letter by Jeremy Bentham [Bentham, Jeremy (1748-1832)]. [Draft of a Letter to the Catholic Association in Bentham's Hand]. [London]: December 9, 1824. 12-1/2" x 8" leaf removed from ledger (or notebook), ruled in red, more than 60 lines of text in ink with extensive editing, cross-outs and amendments. Autograph note by John Bowring at head of leaf reading: "JB to the Catholic Association Not sent", 9 December 1824. Fold lines, light toning. * The text begins, as amended: "For the Catholic Rents. After the example set by The Examiner. Five pound from Jeremy Bentham in the humble and cordial wish that his oppressed brethren of the Catholic persuasion will neither retaliate persecution by persecution, nor attempt redress by insurrection, but unite with the liberal among Protestants for the attainment of security for all, against depredation and oppression in every shape, by the only practicable means - Parliamentary reform, in the radical and solely efficient mode .". This is followed by a long section, amounting to more than half the text, that is crossed out (but legible). The note by Bowring isn't entirely accurate. This letter was sent, but it did not contain the deleted text in the present manuscript draft. In his edition of Bentham's correspondence, Bowring noted at the end of his transcription that he had persuaded Bentham to suppress the text deleted. However, Bowring retained a copy of it and it is printed in full in The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham (2006) 12:73. The Catholic Association, formed by Daniel O'Connell (himself a close friend of Bentham), collected money, known as the Catholic Rent, to defray the costs of publishing and petitioning for the removal of the political disabilities imposed on Roman Catholics. Bentham's contribution of ?5 was noted in the issue of The Examiner for 26 December 1824. The Examiner was a weekly newspaper found by Leigh and John Hunt in 1808 and for some years was a leading intellectual journal promoting radical principles. Bowring [1792-1872] was Bentham's executor and editor. Also a notable political economist and linguist, he was the fourth Governor of Hong Kong. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

1824. 2 SS. 4to.

      - First edition of Baer's lectures on anthropology, complete with the seldom-found book of plates. Karl Ernst von Baer 1792-1876, Estonian biologist, anthropologist, naturalist and geographer, was a professor at Würzburg and Königsberg and from 1834 at St. Petersburg. Considered a founder of modern embryology, his studies were used by Darwin in developing his theory of the origin of species. ‘Von Baer also internationalized physical anthropology. In 1861, he called a meeting in Gottingen, where Blumenbach's collection was kept, to standardize the method of skull measurements. Standardization was not agreed upon, but the meeting was the beginning of the German Anthropological Society, and also of the German Archiv fur Anthropologie, which did not always remain everybody's favorite journal. Von Baer adopted Blumenbach's classification of races based on skull measurements; he thought all recent culture to be Germanic, hardly an anthropological judgment, but he did not find races physically superior one to the other. Eventually, he mellowed with respect to his feelings on the races of man, and came to believe that they were all derived from a single stock, and he felt that their differences in character were determined by both inherited drives and aptitudes and also by their external environment.’ (Jane M. Oppenheimer, 'Science and Nationality: The Case of Karl Ernst von Baer', Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, Vol. 134, No. 2, 1990, pp. 75-82).

12mo, 215 p., 7 hand-coloured plates, original green moiré silk, elaborate gilt border, in fine condition, in matching étui, very slightly fadedCounts as an almanac, since there is a calendar for 1824, but rather a collection of vaudeville songs (some perhaps not otherwise printed?) issued in a slender 33 copies as an instrument of patronage. The only contemporary reference I have found is in Physiologie du théâtre: par un journaliste [Louis Couailhac], Paris 1841, describing an evening party (p.17): "Plus loin, M. Léon Tricotln, rédacteur en chef de I'Aheille des Théâtres, feuille qui se tire à trente-trois exemplaires, donne d'un air important des .conseils saugrenus à trois ou quatre acteurs comparses qui ont la bonté de l'écouter, et leur promet de faire mention d'eux dans leprochain numéro de son journal. Ce prochain numéro paraît rarement." This edition is in BnF and 2 libraries in Germany, an 1825 edition )perhaps the only other to appear?) at Harvard and Illinois. The last auction record was at the Anderson galleries in 1909.

Firmin Didot père et fils Treüttel et Wurz Paris -6 1824 - Two volumes 8vo and one 4to. Half-title, title, 109 pp. and III plates with hieroglyphs printed in orange on china paper laid; half-title, title, 167 pp.; atlas volume with plates IV-XVI with pl. VIIIbis, pl. XVI in colour. Original printed wrappers, vol. 2 in plain wrappers as published, plates loose in atlas vol.; atlas with spine almost fully split. Important and uncommon work in Champollion's career, "the first attempt [together with his Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Egyptiens, published the same year] to integrate Egyptian art with what was now a confident understanding of the complexities of the forms and structures of Egyptian writing" (Buhe). A fine example of the first edition, in original wrappers. Helped by his friend and patron, the Duke of Blacas, Champollion could at last travel to Italy to inspect primary sources directly, before going to Egypt four years later. In Turin he analysed the Drovetti collection, freshly acquired by King Charles Felix - an amazing collection, which Blacas wanted France to buy first. Champollion discovered among the thousand pieces what is now known as the Turin Royal Canon, the most extensive list available of kings compiled by the Egyptians, and the basis for most chronology before the reign of Ramesses II. The Lettres contain the first mention and publication of this major papyrus, and became therefore an important work on Egyptian dynasties. More than 55 pp. are dedicated to a "Notice chronologique des dynasties égyptiennes de Manéthon", written by Champollion's brother. "It was in Turin that Champollion was confronted for the first time with a diverse set of Egyptian statues, vessels, sarcophagi, and papyri; not only could he now perform comparisons of like objects from vastly different dynasties, but he could also begin the process of analyzing each object's inscriptions and evaluating them against his developing chronology of ancient Egyptian pharaohs. These letters reveal Champollion's excitement and simultaneously register his realization of the wholly inadequate state of extant theories on Egyptian history and art: "it is only in the Royal Museum of Turin, amidst this mass of remains from an ancient civilization, that the history of Egyptian art seemed to me to remain entirely still to be written."[11] Champollion's Lettres à M. le duc de Blacas reads as a descriptive assessment of the relative placement of the Egyptian objects he scrutinized on a temporal continuum, and the primarily empirical thrust of this analytic endeavor is underscored by a chronology that appears at the end of each letter and relates to the Egyptian objects Champollion treated therein." (Buhe) Pierre Louis Jean Casimir de Blacas d'Aulps, 1st Count, 1st Duke and finally 1st Prince of Blacas (1771-1839), was a friend and counsellor of Louis XVIII, as well as ambassador in Naples and Rome during the Bourbon Restoration. Charles X chose him to be one of his "premier gentilhommes de la chambre". During his administration, he supported Champollion and created the "Musée Egyptien" within the Louvre. In his lifetime, Blacas amassed a rich antiquities collection that Joseph Toussaint Reinaud described in part under the title Description des monuments musulmans du cabinet du duc de Blacas in 1828. In 1866, his descendants sold most of his collection to the British Museum, where it is still today. Rosa parvi-flora / Rosier à petites fleurs [Double Pasture Rose]

Paris: Firmin Didot, 1824. Stipple engraving printed in black, after Redouté, printed by Rémond. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling. A rare uncoloured impression from the first edition of 'Les Roses': Redouté's most famous work, and perhaps the most celebrated flower book of all time.Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the most successful flower painter of all time, produced a work that was not only of great artistic merit, but also formed an invaluable scientific recordl. Redouté described and figured almost all the important roses known in his day, and included were many of the ancestors of today's roses. "The plates in 'Les Roses' have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared' (Gisele de la Roche). The roses used as specimens for the work were taken from the collections of Thory, the Malmaison gardens, and from other collections around Paris. Many of the flowers were novelties in Redouté's time, and a number were dedicated to the memory of his friends and acquaintances, such as l'Héritier de Brutelle and Ventenat. The plates of 'Les Roses' were executed by means of stipple engraving, a method ideally suited to render the nuances of tone found in Redouté's original water-colours. During a trip to London, he met the renowned engraver Francesco Bartolozzi and learned that the most successful impressions of stipple engravings came from well-used plates. Redouté's printers therefore struck a limited number of black plates to take the edge off the plate before printing in colours. This print was printed in black on ochre-tinted paper. The ochre tint has subsequently been removed to reveal Redouté's full mastery of the stipple-engraving technique that this image so effortlessly demonstrates.Cf. Cleveland Collections 807; cf. Die Zeit[,] in welche dieser Roman fällt, ist um den letzten Östreichischen Krieg [.]" (19. IV. 1813). Eichendorffs Erstling sollte jedoch nicht bei Brockhaus erscheinen, sondern 1815 bei Johann Leonhard Schrag in Nürnberg.

1824. 4to. Altogether 9 pp. on 11 ff. Each with autogr. address. One enclosure (s. b.). Comprehensive correspondence with Pius Alexander Wolff (1782-1828), an actor at the court theatre at Berlin, who had previously resided a few weeks in Dresden, where he made the acquaintance of Tieck, Bottiger and Carl Maria von Weber, which inspired him to move to the court theatre at Dresden. IX. - II) 6. X. - III) 8. XI. - IV) 15. XI. - V) 2. XII. - VI) 16. XII. - Numbered in coloured pencil; address panel mostly with small clipping section from removing seal, otherwise in fine condition.
