In zehn (10) Bänden. Sechste (6.) Original-Auflage, 10 Bände + 3 Bände Neue Folge

Leipzig, F. A. Brockhaus, 1824 - 1826.

1832) und Tombelson (Views of the Rhine. Ask for an English description and further pictures via email.

Compilate?dell'Avvocato Filippo Maria Renazzi. Finely engraved frontis. port. of Zabaglia (margins a little foxed), engraved vignettes on Italian & Latin titles, a large engraved headpiece, & 62 fine engraved plates (ten are folding). 4 p.l., xxix, [1], 46, [4], 48 pp. Text in both Italian and Latin. Large folio (505 x 375 mm.), fine Roman green sheep maroquiné with covers richly gilt in a panel design (a few scuff marks & defects), flat spine richly gilt (ends of spine a little worn), probably bound by the "Pope Gregory XVI binder." Rome: C. Puccinelli, 1824. Second edition, with important additions, of this finely illustrated engineering book. The first edition appeared in 1743. Zabaglia (1664-1750), "master mason of the Fabric of St. Peter's," was one of the foremost engineers and mechanics of his time. He was responsible for the maintenance of St. Peter's in Rome and designed the scaffolding and other devices used for its decoration and repair. The scaffolds - both ground and suspension - were extraordinary temporary structures designed to support, at the great heights of the basilica, the workers, equipment, materials, and machines necessary for restoration works, mosaic and painting decorations, the installation of statues, as well as for placing the iron hoops in the dome to stabilize cracks. Zabaglia made important advances in the technique used to graft and join wooden beams to assemble very large scaffolds and machines. He also founded a "School of Practical Mechanics." The handsome plates in this work depict Zabaglia's inventions including hoists, lifting machines, various kinds of scaffolds, machinery, tools, mosaics, artists at work, men working in a quarry, the transportation of marble and stone, the transportation and lifting of the Vatican obelisk by Fontana in the late 16th century, Zabaglia's transportation of the great obelisk of Augustus, etc. Our edition is enriched by eight new plates depicting the scaffolds made by Zabaglia's most skillful pupils, including Pietro Albertini and Angelo Paraccini. Added is a biography of Zabaglia with a detailed account of his other engineering achievements. A most handsome copy, finely bound. ? Dibner, Moving the Obelisks (1991). For the binder , see Cat. della Mostra Legature papali da Eugenio IV a Paolo VI (Rome: 1977), no. 284, tav. 204. A large number of Motteley's books come from the libraries of de Thou and the Comte d'Hoym. We learn from the same source that Motteley (d. 1850), lived as a hermit, alone and isolated in a rundown apartment. He was afraid to make home repairs because of his fear of disturbing the treasures on which he had spent so much money. Of the 2173 lots, approximately 550 are attributed to the Elzeviers; a number of the items are accompanied by useful printed notes and include an expansive contribution by Charles Nodier on lot 533.         A Critical Inquiry into Ancient Armour, as it existed in Europe, but particularly in England, from the Norman Conquest to the Reign of King Charles II, with a Glossary of Military Terms of the Middle Ages.

London: R. Jennings, 1824 First edition. 3 vols. Folio (37,5 x 27 cm.). 20, (2), lxxvii, (2), 206; (6), 297; (6), 147, (136) pp. Contemporary richly gilt-decorated morocco. Spines with five raised, gilt-decorated bands, gilt title and four gilt compartments. Illustrated with a frontispiece, 80 plates, of which 71 contemporary hand-coloured (aquatints) and 27 large hand-coloured initials. First edition of a beautifully illustrated and illuminated survey of the arms and armour of knights from the 11th until the 17th century. Including the dictionary of military terms. All the paintings in these three volumes are made by Meyrick. According to the Edinburgh Review, they are "as fine as the monuments of Westminster Abbey. Really and truly the work is admirably executed, and deserves every eulogy." (quoted in Lowndes II, p. 1541). Pridaux writes that the 'book is certainly superb'. Sir Walter Scott called it 'incomparable'. The work is still valued as a primary source on the history and evolution of European armour. In the introdution also arms and armour from antiquity are treated (Egyptian, Roman, Greek and Asian). Collated and complete. Fine antiquarian condition. The bindings are beautiful and, beside some shelf wear, in a very good condition. Small restorations on the bindings are executed very well. One tissue guard loose and damaged. Overall an excellent set. For a full description and more images please visit: www.zaalbooks.nl .

JOURNAL OF A SECOND VOYAGE FOR THE DISCOVERY OF A NORTH-WEST PASSAGE FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE PACIFIC; Performed In The Years 1821-22-23, In His Majesty's Ships Fury and Hecla.

John Murray, London 1824 - London: John Murray, 1824. 4to. 1st edition. [8pp] + xxx + [1pp] + 571pp + [1pp]. 26 engraved plates, 9 engraved maps (4 folding), 4 folding sheets of land profiles, tables, illustrations. All plates and charts are complete and clean. Contemporary half calf, with period-style spine, elaborate tooling in the compartments, black leather label.  Clean and very good. Convinced that a route to the Northwest Passage existed out of Hudson's Bay, Parry set out on an expedition in the spring of 1821 with the ships Fury and Hecla. He was instructed to meet up with, and offer assistance to John Franklin's overland expedition in the Coronation Gulf region. Parry sailed though Hudson Strait and Foxe Channel and into Frozen Strait, westward into Repulse Bay and then northward into Lyon Inlet. The expedition spent the winter at Winter Island, where the crew enjoyed much improved living conditions over what was typically known. While at Winter Island, they were visited by a group of Inuit, and as a result, a considerable amount of information was collected and compiled on their customs and way of life. G.F. Lyon's skilful drawings, depicting the Inuit in their traditional clothing, at work, on the hunt, and at play, became the basis for the illustrations used in Parry's journal. When Parry was able to set sail again the next year, he resumed his voyage northward to discover and explore Fury and Hecla Straits, but owing to heavy ice, proceeded only to Igloolik Island off the northwest coast of Melville Peninsula where they spent the second winter. The following summer, Parry aborted the expedition and headed back to England. [AB 13142] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Dizionario topografico-storico degli stati estensi. Opera postuma del cavalier abate Girolamo Tiraboschi.

Tipografia Camerale, 1824.

Paris: Silvestre, 1824. An important sale. 498. Fine copy, printed on thick paper and priced throughout in a contemporary hand.

Observations on the anatomy of the duck-billed animal of New South Wales, the Ornithorynchus paradoxus of naturalists [AND] Observations on the organs of digestion and their appendages, and on the organs of respiration and circulation, in the Ornithorynchus paradoxus [AND] On the kidneys, urinary bladder, and organs of generation, in the male of the Ornithorynchus paradoxus.

Edinburgh, Adam Black, 1824. 8vo (20.8 x 13.4 cm). 15+6+24 pp., three engraved plates. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt lines and title. Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges.= Three early accounts on the anatomy and morphology of one of Australia's most famous mammals: the duck-billed Platypus, then a still quite mysterious animal, by Robert Knox. The three plates show the "poison gland and duct in the foot" (it is the only poisonous mammal), the "complex clavicle and scapulae", and the "organs of generation in the male". On page 27, Knox remarked "It is well known that the specimens of this very extraordinary animal first brought to Europe were considered by many as impositions. They reached England by vessels which had navigated the Indian seas, a circumstance in itself sufficient to rouse the suspicions of the scientific naturalist, aware of the monstrous impostures which the artful Chinese had so frequently practised on European adventurers...". Contained in volume 5(1) of the 'Memoirs of the Wernerian Natural History Society', together with several unrelated papers, as well as Knox' two accounts "of the foramen centrale of the retina, generally called the "Foramen of Soemmering", as seen in the eyes of certain reptiles", with a fine plate. Boards extremities somewhat rubbed and worn; old stamp on title page. A few marginalia in the index (not in Knox's paper). A very good copy. Rare. Not in Ferguson.

Compilate…dell'Avvocato Filippo Maria Renazzi. 284, tav. 204.         Geological Map of Durham..

Folding engraved map (520 x 595 mm.) in fifteen sections, finely handcolored, backed with linen as issued (two sections also backed with marbled board as issued), preserved in the orig. marbled card slip-case (a little worn), orig. yellow printed paper label on upper cover. London: Published by J. Cary, March 1st 1824. First edition of William Smith's geological map of Durham, one in a series of county maps produced by Smith, each separately issued, which were the first detailed geological maps of specific areas. Smith's individual maps are extremely rare on the market. Smith produced the first geological map of England and Wales in 1815, which contained "an amazing amount of correct detail" (D.S.B.) and was the basis for all the geological maps that followed. In 1819 he began the publication of a geological atlas of England and Wales. Published in parts over five years, it remained unfinished, containing twenty-one maps of various English counties. "All the county maps published contain much more information than was shown on Smith's large map of 1815, and indicate that during the intervening years he had done much to increase his knowledge. The maps are based on Cary's county maps, and are headed 'By W. Smith, Mineral Surveyor.' Each map measures 21 ½ inches by 19 1/4 inches [across the ruled border]; the scale varies slightly but averages 3 miles to an inch."-Sheppard, William Smith: His Maps and his Memoirs (1920), p. 155. The map of Durham appeared in the sixth and last part (1824), and was also issued separately, as here. The title above appears in the upper margin; another title is given in a circular tablet in the lower left corner: "A New Map of Durham, divided into Wards, exhibiting its Roads, Rivers, Parks, &c. By John Cary Engraver. 1824." "One of his significant achievements was the identification of the presence of coal in the eastern parts of County Durham, beneath the overlying Magnesian Limestone. The advice he gave to the landowners there led to the establishment of new collieries, resulting in the construction of port and dock facilities at both Hartlepool and Seaham Harbour during the 1830s; both ports were connected by rail to the new mines."-Skempton et al., eds., A Biographical Dictionary of Civil Engineers, p. 639. On this copy of the map the railways in the south-east of the county have been added later in manuscript. Fine copy. ? Davis, "William Smith's Geological Atlas and the Later History of the Plates," in J. Soc. Bib. of Nat. Hist., Vol. 2, pp. 388-95-"The maps were sold separately in sheets or mounted to fold into a cover bearing a special yellow printed label for each county."
