Rolland, Lisboa (Lissabon): 1824 - Lisboa (Lissabon): Rolland 1824, (12°, 10 x 15 cm). 24, 294 S., 1 Bl., 90 S. (Supplemento), 3 Bll.(Annoncen) u. 24 gefaltete Kupferstichkarten. Brauner geglätteter Kalbslederband mit Rückenschild u. etwas Rückenvergoldung. (Kanten leicht berieben, einige leichte Bleistiftanstreichungen. Exemplar auf festem Papier, insgesamt gut erhalten). Selten / Rare. * vgl. Phillips 3504. (Kanten leicht berieben, einige leichte Bleistiftanstreichungen.         A COLLECTION OF PROFILES BY THOMAS POLE, M.D. [manuscript title]

[London & Bristol, 1824. 44 ink and watercolor silhouettes, with engraved and watercolor borders, plus watercolor title sheet, approximately 11 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches, together with 7 additional silhouettes mounted on smaller cards, in varying sizes, and one architectural watercolor drawing, plus two silhouettes and two sketches apparently not by Pole. Later pencil ownership inscriptions on blank versos, occasional pencil annotations. Scattered light foxing and dust soiling. Very good. Born in Philadelphia, the physician and Quaker minister Thomas Pole (1753-1829) was the youngest son of John Pole (1705-55), a Somerset tailor who had emigrated to America, and Rachel Smith of Burlington, New Jersey. He travelled from Burlington to England in 1775 to visit members of his family, then undertaking an extraordinary tour through England and Wales, travelling over 6500 miles, primarily on horseback, visiting Quaker meetings along his journey. He decided to remain in England and, after a medical apprenticeship in Maidenhead, settled in London in 1781. In 1789 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society. His popular treatise THE ANATOMICAL INSTRUCTOR... (London, 1790) concerned the preparation of anatomical specimens. After a move to Bristol with his wife Elizabeth in 1802 he continued his medical work, also becoming involved in promoting the educational systems of Joseph Lancaster (1778-1838) and William Smith. Pole was a talented amateur watercolor artist and painter of silhouettes. The silhouettes collected here were prepared by Pole evidently as a collection for his own personal retention, and include the profiles of family members, friends, and noteworthy acquaintances, many being Quakers. Several of the sitters are American. Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is a silhouette of the Mohawk Indian chief John Norton (1770-1831), titled by his Indian name Teyoninhokarawen. Norton was the son of a half-Cherokee, half English father and Scottish mother. In a strange twist, Joseph Brant, the famous Mohawk chief, adopted him. When Brant died the Mohawks made Teyoninhokarawen their new chief. Like Brant, he aided the British in many ways, including translating religious texts into Mohawk. This was taken in 1804, when he visited England to represent the Iroquois in treaty negotiations with the English. Among the notable figures depicted here are the Founding Father John Dickinson (1732-1808), drawn within a roundel; James Bringhurst (1730-1810), a notable Philadelphia Quaker businessman; and another Philadelphia Quaker businessman drawn here, James Pemberton (1723- 1809), remembered as an abolitionist and for supporting the Delaware Indians. Other prominent Quakers included in this collection are the Rev. Samuel West (1731-1807), pastor of Dartmouth, Massachusetts; William Smith of Bristol, the founder of the Adult Schools in England; educator Joseph Lancaster (1778-1838); Mary Ann Schimmelpenninck (1778-1856) and poet James Montgomery (1771-1854), both noted Quaker abolitionists; Richard Reynolds (1735-1816) of Bristol, ironmaster at Coalbrookdale and philanthropist; and poet and gardener Thomas Wilkinson (1751-1836) of Yanwath, Cumbria, remembered as a friend of William Wordsworth. An extensive collection of over fifty well executed silhouettes, with a focus on Quaker figures in England and America. A complete list of portrait sitters is available upon request.

The Art of Promoting the Growth of the Cucumber and Melon; in a series of directions for the best means adopted in bringing them to a complete state of perfection

Published by Harding, London 1824 - (9 x 5 1/2 inches). xx, 84pp. Half-title. Uncut. Contemporary paper-backed boards (minor losses to spine) First edition. Written by the gardener to W. Knight, of Highbury Park, Watkins had previously served as foreman at a nursery in Hackney. Contrary to the theories promoted by McPhail (who suggested brick pits), Watkins advocates for the efficacy of cultivating cucumbers and melons in dung beds covered in straw. His work gives month by month detailed instructions on his method. An advertisement leaf reveals that though a plate was engraved for the work, that it was rejected by the author as not adequately portraying his system. Scarce; not in Stafleu & Cowan.

- Folio (29 x 18.5 cm.), disbound (separated at fold). Caption title. In good condition. Early manuscript foliation in ink. (2 ll.) *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Sets out the terms under which Portales, Céa will have a monopoly for trade in tobacco, tea, foreign liquor, and playing cards. Diego Portales (1793-1837), born into a prominent merchant family in Santiago, established Portales Céa y Compañía in 1821, with branches in Valparaiso and Lima. The company was granted a monopoly (@estanco) on trade in tobacco, tea, liquor, and playing cards, in return for which they serviced Chile's foreign debt. Unfortunately the government was unable effectively to control such trade, and the company went bankrupt. Its memory lingered in the name of Portales's conservative followers, known as @estanqueros.In the 1830s, Portales, as leader of the conservatives and a proponent of a strong central government, was the power behind the president. Since he was largely responsible for the Chilean Constitution of 1833, his political beliefs remained influential for another century. The first document is signed (in print) by Francisco Xavier de Errazuris and Domingo Eyzaguirre; the second (also in print) by Supreme Director Ramón Freire and Minister of Finance Diego José Benavente.*** Briseño I, 80: calling for 5 pp., large 4º.

"SERRES's chief writings are Anatomie comparée du cerveau dans les quatre classes des animaux vertébrés (1824/1826) and Anatomie comparée transcendante - Principes d'embryogénie, de zoogénie et de tératogénie (1860) ---- "SERRES was trained in Paris and received his medical degree in 1810. From 1808 to 1822 he worked at the Hôtel-Dieu. In 1820 he was awarded the prize for physiological research by the Académie des Sciences and the following year gained a special prize for his two-volume work on the comparative anatomy of the brains of vertebrate animals. In 1822, he was appointed chief medical officer at the Hôpital de la Pitié. He was elected to the Académie de médecine in 1822 and to the Académie des Sciences in 1828. In 1839, he preceded Flourens as professor of comparative anatomy at the Jardin des Plantes and two years later became president of the Académie des sciences. Serres studied the comparative anatomy of a number of vertebrate organs. He noted that many organs start from a number of isolated centers, which eventually unite to form a single adult organ. In his general approach to the nature of life and the harmony between the organes he was clearly influenced by Cuvier, who mentioned Serres's work with admiration. Serres's theoretical position was more closely akin to that of Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. Serres believed that there was only one underlying animal type and that in the course of their development, the organs of the higher animals repeated the form of the quivalent organs in lower organisms.". Broadside. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. The Chilean government had borrowed an enormous amount to improve canals and roads, but was in such disarray that it had not spent most of the money and was using the loan itself to pay interest. This was a major problem for Portales, Céa y Compañía, which was servicing Chile's foreign debt in exchange for a monopoly on tobacco, foreign liquor, playing cards, and tea. General Ramón Freire and Finance Minister Diego José Benavente ordered that the monopoly of Portales Céa be more strictly enforced. Anyone with these forbidden goods is required to use them within 2 weeks or turn them over to the government. Only a few @subastadores are allowed to grow tobacco in Chile. The government was unable effectively to control such trade, and Portales's company went bankrupt.         Jocko, Anecdote Détachée des Lettres Inédites sur L'Instinct des Animaux

Paris: P. Persan, 1824, 1824. First edition. Some light foxing; very good copy.. 12mo, modern gray paper wrappers, 176 pages. An interesting work of short fiction by French author and polymath Charles Pougens (1755-1833). A female orangutan on a jungle island encounters a Portuguese man, Fernandez, who gives her the name Jocko. They become friends and engage in numerous activities together, including having meals and drinking wine. She almost returns to Portugal with him, but tragically dies of a snakebite just prior to the departure. Pougens took the name Jocko from Buffon's Histoire Naturelle, and in the text are numerous references to that and other important works of travel and science, all impressively detailed in 84 pages of citations and notes following the story. Pougens' Jocko was translated into several languages, and it had number of stage adaptations, including one ballet. And "Jocko" became a prevalent name used on stage in the 19th century for jovial primates and happy, loyal slaves.
