Faust marks an important landmark in the development of German Romantic opera. Spohr's concern to create scene complexes, rather than merely a string of individual numbers, points the way towards the continuity of his later operas. His striking use of chromatic harmony was recognized by Weber, who wrote in his introduction to the Prague première: 'this dark, Romantic spirit-world is ideally matched with the composer's inmost musical character. Owing to this fact the work as a whole is marked by great aptness of colour - grand musical and dramatic effects of charm and tenderness alternating with shatteringly powerful effects in the ensembles and choruses'." "Regarded by many contemporaries as worthy of a place beside Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven in the pantheon of the greatest composers, [Spohr] has, together with Gluck and Cherubini, been allotted a considerably lower status by posterity. Mozart's Figaro and Wagner's Tristan were both composed during Spohr's lifetime; his own work looks, Janus-like, towards both the formalism and clarity of the Classical tradition, and the structural and harmonic experimentation associated with 19th-century Romanticism."

Journ. Chir. Augenh., 6/3. - Hrsg. v. Graefe & Walther. - Berlin, im Verlag von G. Reimer, 1824, 8, pp.379-568 pp., 1 gefalt. Tafel, feiner Pappband. First Edition of this very early report Johann Friedrich Diefenbach's relaiting to plastic surgery!"Not long after Bünger's description Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach (1792-1847) a celebrated German surgeon, and one of the founder of plastic surgery in Germany, published his report on a skin graft that he had performed largely as an experiment. This was part of a treatment of a 40-year-old woman suffering from sensory disorders and reduced muscular strength in the left half of the body. The physicians in charge believed that application of eoxogenous stimuli to the anaesthetic half of the body would have a beneficial effect on the disease process. Dieffenbach assumed that this could best be achieved by a kind of "exchange" skin graft. Prior to grafting, the skin on the flexor side of the forearm was stimulated by rubbing with alcohol, Dieffenbach apparently being influenced in this regard by Dutrochet's publication. A piece of skin the size of a taller (diameter: 35 mm) was cut from this area 24 h later. The thickness of the graft was not specified. A skin fragment of the same dimensions was excised from the extensor side of the forearm, without previously stimulating the area. The portions of the skin were exchanged and placed in the fresh wounds. They were held in position by means of adhesive plaster. The wounds were inspected after six days. The graft on the flexor side of forearm "floated in pus" the epidermis was still attached to it. The "prepared" graft placed on the extensor side of the forearm looked quite different. The epidermis had become detached, half of the graft had become putrefied, but the remainder was attached to the underlying structures and was surrounded by granulation tissue. Unfortunately, this fragment was inadvertently pulled loose from the underlying structures when the dressing was changed, whereupon both graft and wound began to bleed. According to Dieffenbach, the bleeding proved that the circulation had meanwhile been restored. Both skin defects subsequently healed within a few days. It was in fact even claimed that there was no scar."

Apart from his clinical experiment, Dieffenbach performed many experiments in an effort to establish the feasibility of skin grafting in birds, rabbits, cats nd dogs. Not only was skin grafted from one bird to another but also from mammals to birds. All these attempts failed because the grafts became desiccated. Dieffenbach suspected that this was due to the high body temperature of the birds. In another experiment, a pieglet's skin was gradfted on a piegon. The graft dried out, but the hairs in the grafted skin were reported as having resumed growing after 8 days. The test animal was sacrificed 10 days after the operation. The graft was found to be attached to the wound floor, but was not vascularized. Other experiments in rabbits and dogs likewise failed." Henk J.         The City of Glasgow.

London: Smith Elder & Co 1824 - Hand-coloured aquatint, 'drawn on the spot by I. Clark'. Image size (including text): 14 3/4 x 21 1/2 inches. Sheet size: 18 3/4 x 24 3/4 inches. An historically important topographical view of Glasgow in Scotland, from John Clark's 'Views in Scotland'. There is some debate as to who executed this stunning print. There is no reference which identifies the author of this view, but there is some indication that it is the work of the celebrated painter John Heaviside Clark (1770-1863). Born in Scotland, Clark exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1801 and 1832. He was primarily a landscape and marine painter, but he also produced a number of fine aquatints, which exhibit his exceptional talents as an engraver. Known as "Waterloo Clark" for his early sketches of the battle of Waterloo, he was a painter of some repute across the British Isles, and his beautiful views remain some of the most attractive images of the English countryside. A contemporary gazetteer notes that the city was 'the manufacturing and commercial metropolis of Scotland, and the third city of the United Kingdom in point of population, and perhaps of wealth also.' (Fullarton [publisher's] A Gazetteer of the World 1856, III, p.615). According to the same source the population in 1821 was 147,043, the present view taken at about that time shows a city that is increasingly industrialised: factory chimneys are beginning to cast a pall of smoke over the city, but it has not yet come to completely overrun the landscape in which it is set. The population was to more than double in the next 20 years with the census of 1851 recording a population of 346,984. Cf.

XVI,240 pp. Sewn as issued and uncut in printed grey paper wrappers. Spine worn. Covers with dog ears, the rear one with a few tears. Occasional marginal foxing. Tear in upper margin on pp. 171-72. Signature of P. O. Liljevalch dated Paris 1843 on front cover. A very good copy. The work was reprinted in 1836 in the first part of the posthumous omnibus volume "Hygiène publique". Alexandre Parent du Châtelet (1790-1836) was a physician in Paris. He is mainly known for his large work on the prostitution in Paris, which was posthumously published in 1836. In the foreword for "Essai sur les cloaques", which describes the sewage system of Paris and its function, Parent du Châtelet writes that he has visited all the places which he describes in the text: "j'ai surmonté sans hésiter la répugnance et les dangers inséparables de pareilles recherches [.]. As the big cities of Europe grew quickly during the 19th century there was an urgent need for functional sewage systems and in Paris some 2000 kilometers of sewers were eventually built. Peter Olof Liljevalch (1807-77) was a physician and from 1884 royal physician. During the years 1842-45 he made a scientific journey to Paris at public expense, and it was at this occasion he acquired this book. Liljevalch also was a great collector of books and manuscripts. His library was sold at auction in 1877.

Suit of Armour for Youth, A.

London: Published by the Proprietor, 1824. Eleven Hand-Colored Flaps Revealing Moral Maxims[GRIMALDI, Stacy]. A Suit of Armour for Youth. London: Published by the Proprietor, 1824. First edition. Hand-colored issue. Twelvemo (7 1/8 x 4 1/8 inches; 182 x 105 mm.). xii, 92 pp. Hand-colored engraved frontispiece and eleven hand-colored engraved plates, each with a hand-colored engraved overslip.Bound ca. 1900 by R. Wallis (stamp-signed on verso of front free end-paper). Full polished tan calf, covers double-ruled in gilt, spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments, two tan morocco labels lettered in gilt, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. Top of spine expertly and almost invisibly repaired, otherwise a near fine example. It would appear that this little book was published both plain or more expensive, as here, hand-colored.William Grimaldi (1751-1830). "One day, seeking some ideas for a house party which his family was to hold, he found inspiration in a group of articles on his daughter's dressing-table. He sketched a number of these on the top flaps of sheets of paper folded in half, and underneath drew an appropriate virtue. For instance, a sketch of a container of Rouge superieur, ne se vend à Paris was opened to reveal a scene captioned 'Modesty' underneath. Grimaldi had no further thought for the nine items than that they might provide interest at the party, but his son Stacy (1790-1863), a London solicitor and genealogist, was so impressed by the idea that he insisted they should be published. The elder Grimaldi was encouraged to write a verse to accompany each drawing, and Stacy then saw to the publication - at his father's expense. The Toilet, as the book was called, appeared in 1821 and quickly sold out, necessitating at least one reprint. Imitations soon appeared, and from Ireland came Indispensable Requisites for Dandies of both Sexes (circa 1823), and an anonymous American author from Boston offered My Lady's Casket in 1835. The Grimaldis produced a considerably more elaborate sequel for boys in 1824 entitled A Suit of Armour for Youth, which… again used the same flap principle. In this book eleven pieces of armour were, represented - a crest, helmet, breastplate, backplate, sword, shield, tilting-lance, housings, gauntlets, spurs and a banner - and beneath each an appropriate moral maxim." (Peter Haining. Movable Books. An Illustrated History. p. 16)."The Grimaldis produced a sequel for boys in 1824 called Suit of Armour for Youth. In this pieces of body armour were faithfully reproduced with moral maxims to match. Thus "The Strongest Breastplate", when raised disclosed George III addressing the House of Lords, the picture being labelled "Virtue". " (Percy Muir. English Children's Books 1600 to 1900, p. 215).Gumuchian, 1995; Haining, p.16; Muir, p. 215; Osborne, p. 418.

Six months' residence and travels in Mexico; containing remarks on the present state of New Spain, Its natural productions, state of society, manufactures, trade, agriculture, and antiquities, &c.

London Murray 1824 - FIRST EDITION.8vo., [2], v-xii, 532pp., with 2 folding engraved maps, folding table, 16 aquatint plates, 4 coloured by hand. Contemporary pale half calf, spine gilt in 6 compartments, green lettering piece, brown marbled boards and endpapers, a fine fresh copy. William Bullock was a showman, collector and naturalist. In 1809 he moved his growing collection of 'natural curiousities' from Liverpool to London, originally to Piccadilly and then to the 'Egyptian Hall', which housed around 32,000 objects of natural history, ethnography and archaeology. Bullock knew that novelty was the key to maintaining his audience and so in 1819 he auctioned his permanent collection and hosted temporary exhibitions instead. Two such exhibitions- titled Ancient Mexico and Modern Mexico- held in 1824, included artifacts and specimens brought back from his 1822 trip to Mexico. Sabin records that Bullock was "the first English traveller in Mexico since Father Gage in 1640". He "spent six months collecting 'scientific information' that amounted to a vast array of flora, fauna, pre-Columbian manuscripts, sculptures and other artifacts" (Stephen, 157). In exhibiting these finds in England he became " the first to present Mexican arts to the public in the postindependence period", praising in particular the "productive industry" of rural folk art (Stephen, 157). Includes 'The Plan of the City of Mexico', based on the celebrated map of Mexico City by Diego García Conde orginally engraved in 1807. Extremely difficult to obtain because of its rarity and format, Conde's map, as found in this book, is an alternativeway of acquiring an early version of the greatest nineteenth-century map of Mexico City.         The house where Ludwig van Beethoven lived in summer 1824.

View on the street with the house where Ludwig van Beethoven lived in summer 1824 on the right. Title added on bottom in pencil: ´LUDW. V. BEETHOVEN / WOHNTE IN DIESEM HAUSE / SOMMER 1824´, bottom right the address: '19. KAHLEMBERGERSTR. 24' in Vienna. In that year the composer wrote the famous 'Ninth simphony' that was performed 7th May 1824 at the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna. Signed on the bottom right: 'HE EIBUSCHITZ' and further signed in pencil at bottom, close to the plate mark. Hedwig Brecher-Eibuschitz was a female artist, who studied at the Art School for Women and Girls. She was Jewish and due to the historical developments of the twentieth century she, like many other Jewish female artists, had been neglected, also during her lifetime. In fact the art world was run essentially by men. For instance ""women artists were not allowed to take part in Vienna's lavishly praised ""Ver Sacrum"", the blossoming of creativity and art that emerged there around 1900. The main Viennese movement of modern art, the Secession, led by Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), was joined by contemporary European artists, among them many Jews, but it excluded women-of any faith."" Women artists were also interdicted education: ""The only public art school in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Austria open to women was the School of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule, founded in 1867). As the name itself indicates, the school was originally established to teach applied arts. Although women had free access to the school, the choice of art classes was limited de facto. They could attend the first-year preparatory classes, but participation in subsequent courses in architecture, sculpture and figurative painting was restricted, if not forbidden. [...] Jewish women artists - together with their gentile counterparts - established their own system of education and representation. The most important art school was the Viennese Kunstschule für Frauen und Mädchen, established in 1897, which held a special place among all the art schools founded for women and girls since it marked the beginning of the first intensive art education for women. In comparison to other art schools, the level of education was quite high, there was no restriction in admission and the tuition fee was kept relatively low. [...] To make their voices heard, women established their own organizations, which provided them with a forum for exhibitions and sales as well with support and encouragement. The best-known of these associations was the Association of Austria's Women Painters (Vereinigung bildender Künstlerinnen Österreichs), founded in 1910. [...]"" (For the full article see: Birgit Ben-Eli: 'Austria: Jewish Women Artists' https://jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/austria-jewish-women-artists) Drypoint on paper with margins; possibly first state, title added on bottom in pencil; plate mark: 238 x 193 mm, total: 300 x 234 mm; tiny spot on top margin, otherwise in outstanding condition. In passepartout to be substituted.

Observations on some points of seamanship; with practical hints on naval oeconomy, &c. &c. . The whole profits are for the benefit of the Royal Naval Charitable Society.

Cheltenham: printed by J.J. Hadley Minerva Press Queen's Buildings 1824 - 8vo., xii + 290pp., contemporary sea-green half morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt and lettered. A fine copy. First edition. A manual for naval men by an experienced Royal Navy officer (Lieutenant 1790; Troubridge's First Lieutenant in the Culloden at the battle of St. Vincent, 1797; with the Leonidas assisted at the capture of Cephalonia, 1809, and the reduction of St. Maura, 1810-11; eventually reaching the rank of Rear-Admiral in 1841). Although a substantial portion of Griffiths's book comprises notes on 'points of seamanship', there is much here of great interest on both the management and human side of the early 19th century Royal Navy. Thus, on pp.43-49 the author considers the practice of admitting women on board ('an evil of considerable magnitude'), and he considers at some length man-management issues, including (pp.81-118) the conduct of the chaplain, the officers, midshipmen and the ship's company as a whole. He reminds the reader (imagined no doubt as a naval officer himself) that most of the ship's company were there involuntarily and not by choice, that nonetheless they had 'feelings' and emotional ties to families. 'Seamen are now a days a thinking set of people', Griffiths claims, 'and a large portion of them possess no inconsiderable share of common sense'. Punishments should be firm but fair, courts martial requiring a higher standard of proof than had become customary. At the end of the volume is a long list of subscribers (pp. 275-290), the vast majority of whom were evidently Royal Navy officers including no fewer than 57 Admirals.
