Observations on injuries of the spine and of the thigh bone: in two lectures, delivered in the School of Great Windmill Street. The first in vindication of the authors opinions against the remarks of Sir Astley Cooper, Bart. The second on the late Mr. John Bells title to certain doctrines now advanced by the same gentleman.

Printed for Thomas Tegg, 1824., London: - 318 x 247 mm. 4to. xv, [1], 101, [1], [ads, 2] pp. 5 figs., 9 engraved plates (with plate 9 bound in at front as frontis., 2 folding); light offsetting associated with the plates, marginal water-stains. Quarter red buckram, boards, gilt spine; covers soiled. Blind stamp of The Presbyterian Hospital, Ludlow Library, Philadelphia on title. Ownership signature of Charles A. Carton. Very good. UNOPENED COPY. RARE. FIRST EDITION. The text of these two lectures is, as usual, in Bell's typical lucid style, and the nine plates, drawn by the author, are remarkably effective. The first lecture is given over to a criticism of some views by another famous surgeon of Bell's time, Sir Astley Paston Cooper (see No. 1224 ff.). The second lecture is in support of his brother, John Bell, recently deceased, certain of whose findings had been claimed by Cooper as his own (Heirs of Hippocrates 1306).         Autograph Letter, Signed ("T. Moore") to John Wilson Croker

1824. 1 p. pen and ink on paper, docketed Nov. 11, 1824. 8vo. Old folds. 1 p. pen and ink on paper, docketed Nov. 11, 1824. 8vo. Moore on First Meeting Byron. Moore writes to John Wilson Croker (1780-1857), author, MP and Secretary of the Admiralty. Croker, a frequent contributor to John Murrary's Quarterly Review, is thought responsible for the savage review of Keat's Endymion which Shelley and Byron would blame for the poet's early death. Here Moore refers to John Murray's Notes on Captain Medwin's Conversations of Lord Byron, which corrects errors in Medwin's work. Reading in part, "I am glad to see that Murray has so triumphantly set down the Captain [Medwin] - In a less important way this conversationalist has equally misrepresented me - the whole account of my first acquaintance with Lord Byron being incorrect. Indeed his entire book is a series of lies 'at random strung' upon a slender thread of truth." Moore was sensitive about his aborted duel with Francis Jeffrey following the latter's harsh review of Epistles, Odes, and other Poems (1806) - the duelists were hauled off by the police and newspapers circulated a rumor that the guns were loaded with paper pellets. Byron's reference to the duel in his English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809) incensed Moore, and he in turn challenged Byron to a duel. Byron, who was traveling in the Levant with Hobhouse at the time, was unaware of Moore's anger. Of course the two later became close friends, and Moore's Letters and Journals of Lord Byron (1830) has remained "the mainstay of biographers ever since" (Marchand, Byron: A Portrait, p. 473). The Letters of Thomas Moore (Dowden, ed.), no. 659. Provenance: American Art Association, 6 December 1928

Auqui-Camachec, Kcollana mama patriac runancuata, pata llactacunapi causac llactama sincunamanmi-nin

Exceedingly rare imprint, containing Perez de Urdininea´s praise to the inhabitants of Peru and Bolivia to come in aid of the armies led by Simon Bolivar and General Santa Cruz, in both Spanish and Quechua. Bilingual revolutionary imprints are by no means a common occurrence; they aimed to appeal to a vast audience (the native populations like the Quechua, Aymara, and Guarani mostly), not often approached by colonial authorities. These translations prepared into native languages were produced mostly by the Argentinean Junta, who had to gain the favor of the other regions of the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata. Perez de Urdininea (1784 - 1865) was a remarkable figure of the Bolivian independence, and the first Bolivian-born -and third overall- President of Bolivia. Transcription: PAISANOS.

Rosa Brevistyla leucochroa / Rosier a court-style (var. à fleurs jaunes et blanches)

Paris 1824 - Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, engraved by Lemaire. Very good condition apart from a few small brown spots in the image. More than with any other painter, Redouté's flowers are alive, and always shown at the ephemeral moment of their greatest beauty. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre Italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually to Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's scientific understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Roses from which this work comes. Redouté together with Claude-Antoine Thory, an ardent botanist and collector of roses, have together in Les Roses produced a work not only of great artistic merit, but also an invaluable scientific record as well. `Redouté and Thory knew, described and figured almost all the important roses known in their day. Included were many of the key ancestors of our present-day roses. The plates in Les Roses have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared' (Gisele de la Roche). The roses used as specimens for the work were taken from the collections of Thory, the Malmaison gardens, and from other collections around Paris. Many of the flowers were novelties in Redouté's time, and a number were dedicated to the memory of his friends and acquaintances, such as l'Héritier de Brutelle and Ventenat. Cf.       London: Robert Triphook, 1824. n. This is a well-printed, well-illustrated, and attractively bound biography of one of the most famous women in French history, this account being written at a time when public sentiment was beginning to grow for her canonization. Our anonymous author, William Henry Ireland (1777-1835), produced a considerable number of significant works, but he will always be known as the famous Shakespearean forger. The son of artist Samuel Ireland, whose books of English "Picturesque Views" were quite successful, young Ireland in 1794 forged his first Shakespearean document, a dedicatory letter that he penned on the flyleaf of an old book and that he claimed to be in the bard's own hand. Encouraged by his trusting father, the lad created more Shakespeariana, until he finally fabricated a play, "Vortigern and Rowena," which was staged at Drury Lane Theatre, and which was so flat and unlike Shakespeare that it was laughed off the stage. In 1805 Ireland blithely published the story of his forgeries, of which he always remained perversely proud. His notorious literary debut did not deter him from becoming a prolific writer of poetry, novels, and works of history like the present substantial work. The additional illustrations here include a number of depictions of the Maid of Orleans, portraits of other important historical figures, and scenes of the area where her story took place. The book seems to be extraordinarily rare, with no other copy currently advertised for sale.. 241 x 152 mm. (9 1/2 x 6"). Two volumes bound in four. Pleasing 19th century dark blue three-quarter morocco, flat spines decorated in gilt and inlaid with four tan fleurs-de-lys, marbled sides and endpapers, top edges gilt. WITH 27 PLATES, including the five called for (one a double-page map, another a folding color scene), and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 22 plates, four of them in color. A Large Paper Copy. Front flyleaf with the signature of Charles G. Dill dated 31 May 1909. Joints and extremities with a hint of rubbing (but well masked with dye), small chip out of one spine top, backstrips lightly and uniformly sunned, but the pretty bindings solid and with no serious condition issues. Flyleaves and final leaf in each volume somewhat browned (one opening with a small portion of the pages similarly browned from a laid-in acidic object), variable offsetting from the plates (perhaps a dozen rather noticeably offset), intermittent spotted foxing (isolated leaves more heavily foxed); not without problems internally, but the text still fresh, without many signs of use, and printed within vast margins.

Illustrations in text, indexed. Spine label tanned; partial cloth split to front joint neatly repaired; slight damp and soil spotting to boards; front inner hinge neatly repaired with rice paper; two old private ink ownership inscriptions at front (person at King's College, Toronto); damp stain to corner of frontispiece; bit of foxing to the two full page maps and only occasional foxing spots in text; large chip to fore margin of last two leaves of text (no printing affected); soft corner creases to late leaves; page edges tanned; leaves unopened at edges of last quarter of the text; one inch tear to inner margin of folding map neatly repaired with clear archival paper tape on the blank side; in all, a VG clean, tight and unworn pleasant copy. As an officer in the Royal Regiment of Artillery, Leake was in 1799 sent to Constantinople to train the Ottoman army for its defense against Napoleon. A journey through Asia Minor in 1800 to join the British fleet at Cyprus kindled his interest in antiquarian topography. He was later sent out again to survey the coasts of Albania and Morea. He retired from the army in 1815 and devoted the rest of his life to antiquarian topology. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1815 and was a founding member of the Royal Geographical Society. "His account is the first complete and systematic description of the geography of Asia Minor. All of his work is equally precise as regards geography, antiquities and philology." - Blackmer 972.         The Private Journal of Captain G.F. Lyon of H.M.S. Hecla, during the Recent Voyage of Discovery Under Captain Parry.

1824 - 8vo. Contemporary English half calf gilt over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-piece in one, others decorated in gilt and blind, marbled endpapers, speckled edges; pp. [iii]-xiii, [1 (directions for placing the plates)], 468; engraved frontispiece by Edward Finden after Lyon, 6 engraved plates by Finden after Lyon, one engraved folding map by J. Walker, printed music in the text; apart from light brownig and occasional spotting to plates, as usual, a good copy. First edition. Lyon accompanied the second Parry expedition in search of a North West Passage as captain of Hecla (1821-1823; Parry commanded the sistership Fury), and his Private Journal of the voyage supplemented Parry's official account of the voyage, Journal of a Second Voyage for the Discovery of a North-West Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific (London: 1824). The expedition proved of importance for the successful cooperation between the Europeans and the Inuit encountered; indeed, by the aid of a sketch map of the area Parry discovered from one Iligliuk a possible route for the Passage. Lyon's curiosity led him to observe with great attention the habits and character traits of the different tribes of Esquimaux and the Private Journal offers an excellent description of this people, as Field states: 'Almost the entire volume is devoted to the narration of the peculiarities of the Aborigines of the Arctic regions. Captain Lyon's curiosity led him to observe with great attention, the habits of life, and traits of character of the different tribes of Esquimaux, which his humanity, and good management attracted to his winter quarters. They built their villages near his ships, and permitted a closer familiarity, than any other of the Arctic voyagers was able to attain. His narrative, therefore, abounds with incidents of their intercourse, and curious anecdotes of Esquimaux life'. This work is known with two settings of the preliminary leaves; in one there is no half-title, the printer's name appears on the verso of the title, and the preliminary matter is paginated to xi, followed by an unnumbered page with the 'Directions .' and in the other (as here) the imprint is on the verso of the half-title (that of the title is blank) and the pagination runs to xiii, followed by an unnumbered page of 'Directions .'. - There are variants with different compositions of preliminaries; a half-title does not seem to have been issued.       London, 1824. 36 leaves plus numerous blanks. Small quarto. Vellum over boards. Endsheets a trifle dusty, bookplates front and rear of esteemed collector John Gribbel (his sale Parke-Bernet, 22 Jan. 1941, lot 161), engraved label of Byfield & Son, Booksellers & Stationers, on pastedown, otherwise very good. Half morocco box and folding chemise. With the ownership signature on the front endsheet of "J. T. Smith, Keeper of Prints British Museum," who is inferentially the party who oversaw the accretion of this collection of inscriptions, drawings and sentiments of visitors to the Print Room - several of the inscriptions incorporate mention of such visits. John Taylor Smith (1766-1833), himself a printmaker and draughtsman, was appointed to the post in 1816, and was "an attentive, informed and engaging figure in that role" - DNB. The highlight constituent elements of this album include: a) three pen and ink drawings by George Cruikshank, one signed and dated 22 November 1827, two of Fairy Library subjects; b) an original watercolor, dated 21 June 1824, by W. N. Pyne, of a seaport and wharves; c) a pen and ink drawing of Edward Kean as Othello by Robert Hunt, R.A. (captioned in Smith's hand); d) a pen and ink drawing of a dog's head by William Harvey, signed and dated 30 October 1827; e) an autograph poem by Agnes Strickland, signed and dated 25 April 1828; f) a two page account of his ascent of Mount Blanc signed twice by Charles Fellowes; g) a two page essay by Baron William Humboldt, signed and dated 16 June 1828 on a third page; h) a five page account of a visit with Robert Burns (asserting strongly Burns's complete sobriety during the visit), signed by R. Donne and dated 1 July 1828; i) a "Bridal Song Written for the Fairy-Opera of Aladdin, but omitted," signed and dated by George Soane 5 Feb 1828; and j) an 8 line poem ("Envy not the poet's name ..."), signed and dated by Robert Montgomery 12 November 1827. In all, a lovely and evocative period piece.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. Jena, 9. XII. 1824.

1824. 4 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 4to.

An exposé of the conduct of the Victualling Board to the Honorable Basil Cochrane, as contractor and agent victualler to His Majesty's ships on the East India station. To which are annexed, proofs of the zeal and exertions of Mr. Cochrane for the public service.

London: printed by J. Davy 1824 - 8vo., (7) + vi = vii + (1) + 120pp., including the half-title, the text folowed by 5 large folding tables of contract accounts, contingent accounts, abstracts, and disbursements, original boards with printed label (slightly defective) on upper cover, printed spine label, head of spine chipped, upper joint splitting, but a fine, crisp, presentation copy inscribed in ink by Cochrane 'Robert Wm. Newman Esq. M.P.> (1776-1848), then the M.P. for Exeter. First and only edition and seemingly of great rarity (a copy in the BL but not found elsewhere by COPAC or OCLC). Basil Cochrane (1753-1826) was a Scottish civil servant, businessman, inventor, and wealthy nabob of early 19th century England. The sixth son of Scottish nobleman and politician Thomas Cochrane, 8th Earl of Dundonald, Basil Cochrane at the age of sixteen (in 1769) was given a place with the East India Company in Madras. In 1792 he took over supply contracts for the British navy in India from his brother John, who had held them since 1790. The demand for provisions was so great that Basil had flour mills and bakeries built at Calcutta and Madras to fulfil his contracts. He returned to England in 1806 having accumulated an enormous fortune (he had held contracts over the years totalling £1,418,236) but spent the next 13 years disputing his accounts with the Victualling Board. After Cochrane's accounts were finally settled in 1819, he published several pamphlets criticizing the Victualling Board's conduct towards him and calling for reforms in the process. James Warren Doyle (1786-1834), the young Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, was a much respected and influential political activist. * The initials 'J.K.L.' were a semi-anonymous shorthand for J>ames [bishop of] K>ildare & L>eighlin.       Dublin, 1824. 160pp. 19th century purple straight-grain morocco, ornately gilt. Mid-19th century ownership inscriptions on titlepage, scattered marginal pencil marks. A few leaves untrimmed. A fine copy in a handsome English binding. A rare first-hand account of the war of independence in Venezuela (1810-23), by an Irish sympathizer and fighter for the cause of liberty in South America. In July, 1819, Adam joined the Second Regiment of Lancers raised by General Devereux in Ireland to support the movement for South American independence. Military actions, camp adventures, voyages to Caribbean islands, depredations (including unceasing "Musquitoes"), meetings with Bolivar, etc., are all described in fascinating detail. The author records what he saw on the islands of Trinidad, Marguaritta and Tobago, describing the latter as "a rich, elevated country, agreeably diversified with cottages, villages, plantations, and extensive tracks of fertile, well cultivated soil." OCLC locates only five copies of this rarity, at the Library of Congress, Yale, Harvard, the National Library of Ireland, and the British Library. SABIN 167. PALAU ADDENDA 2601ii.

Tiele, Bibl. 1064; not in Eberstadt; Sabin. First edition of a travel book on North America by Martinus Cohen Stuart (1824-1878). Cohen Stuart, a prominent minister of the Remonstrant Church, visited the United States in 1875 at the invitation of the Evangelical Alliance, an international Protestant missionary society. With contagious enthusiasm he gives a very positive depiction of American society. He praises the United States for its democratic foundations and the advancing ecclesiastical and social state of affairs. In vivid imagery, interspersed with lithographed plates and small wood-engraved illustrations, he expresses his interests in its people, cities and countryside. In describing the cities, public buildings and places of interest especially, he shows himself a keen observer, though he does not neglect to stress their historic Dutch roots. The plates are by the leading lithographers Emerik and Binger in Haarlem, and the wood-engravings finely executed by Édouard Vermorcken (1820-1906) of Antwerp and Brussels. Binding worn, front hinge of the first volume damaged at the top. Slightly browned throughout with some occasional stains. Otherwise a good copy.

St. Petersburg: Par Ordre de Sa Majesté Impériale, 1824. Engraved titlepage; dedication leaf; and fifteen double- page engraved maps by S. Froloff, six double-page, nine single-page; some plates with more than one map, some with inserts, one with a folding extension, all dated 1824. Recent three-quarter red morocco and cloth boards, gilt ruled and lettered. Contemporary presentation inscription on front endpaper and scattered contemporary ink annotations. Expertly remargined at plate fore-edges, not affecting map images. Light tanning at edges, otherwise internally clean. Near fine. The very rare first French edition of this great atlas of the South Pacific, the first of its type and one of the most important of all Pacific atlases, with a superb presentation from Krusenstern to Admiral Count Login Hayden. A companion atlas to the North Pacific was published some three years later. Dedicated to Tsar Alexander, this magnificent atlas by the great Russian explorer and cartographer Krusenstern is a great rarity in either its original edition in Russian or in this first French edition of the same year. The charts are drawn on a large, detailed scale, and represent the first systematic attempt to chart the islands of the Pacific, including a a map of the whole of New Zealand and most of the eastern coast of Australia, with a detailed plan of Sydney Harbor. The first chart is a general map of the Southern Pacific, showing discovery dates and including, in this particular copy, some supplementary contemporary handwritten information dated up to 1825. It covers the ocean from Borneo to Cape Horn, showing all of Australia, the Solomon Islands, Polynesia, New Zealand, the Galapagos Islands and the western coast of South America. Krusenstern compiled these maps from information gathered on his world voyage of 1803-1806 and from earlier and subsequent voyages. "Krusenstern is the Hydrographer of the Pacific…It is difficult to speak in sufficiently high terms of this noble work…Krusenstern…embodied everything that had previously been observed in the Pacific, and in the most masterly manner he has reconciled the discordant materials at his command, and placed its hydrography upon an entirely new basis" - A.G. Findlay, quoted by Forbes. The fifteen maps included are as follows: 1) CARTE GÉNÉRALE DE L'OCÉAN PACIFIQUE HEMISPHERE AUSTRAL [double-page]. 2) CARTE DE LA NOUVELLE GUINÉE DU DÉTROIT DE TORRÈS. - PLAN DE PORT DORY [double-page]. 3) CARTE DE LA MER DU CORAIL [double-page]. 4) CARTE DE LA CÔTE SUD EST DE LA NOUVELLES-GALLES MÉRIDIONALE. - PLAN DE PORT JACKSON. 5) CARTE DE LA TERRE DE VAN DIEMEN ET DU DÉTROIT DE BASS. - PLAN DU PORT PHILIP. 6) CARTE DES ILES DE L'AMIRAUTÉ. - CARTE DE LA NOUVELLE IRLANDE. - PLAN DU PORT GOWER. 7) CARTE DES ISLES DE LA NOUVELLE BRETAGNE. - CART DE L'ARCHIPEL DE SANTA CRUZ. - PLAN DE L'ANSE BYRON. 8) CARTE DE L'ARCHIPEL DE LA LOUISIADE. - CARTE DE L'ARCHIPEL DE MENDANA. - PLAN DU PORT CHICHAGOFF. 9) CARTE SYSTEMATIQUE DE L'ARCHIPEL DES ISLES DE SALOMON. - PLAN DE LA BAIE CHOISEUL. - PLAN DU PORT PRASLIN [double-page]. 10) CARTE DE L'ARCHIPEL DES NOUVLES. HEBRIDES. - PLAN DU PORT DE LA RESOLUTION. 11) CARTE DE LA NOUVELLE CALEDONIE. - PLAN DU PORT ST. VINCENT. 12) CARTE DE LA NLE. ZÉLANDE, ET DU DÉTROIT DE COOK. - CARTE DU DÉTROIT DU COOK. - PLAN DE LA BAIE DUSKY [double- page, with folding addition]. 13) CARTE DE L'ARCHIPEL DES ISLES DES AMIS. - CARTE DE L'ARCHIPEL DES ISLES DE LA SOCIETÉ. - PLAN DE LA BAIE MATAVAI. 14) CARTE DE L'ARCHIPEL DES ISLES FIDGI. - ESQUISSE DE SANDAL WOOD BAY. - CARTE DE LA ISLES DES NAVIGATEURS. - PLAN DE L'ANSE DU MASSACRE. 15) CARTE DE L'ARCHIPEL DES ISLES BASSES [double-page]. The CARTE DE LA MER DU CORAIL is dedicated to Matthew Flinders, and indeed the CARTE GÉNÉRALE bears the name "Australia," which was the name championed by Flinders and which appeared on his map of Australia published ten years earlier. Despite its importance to the cartographic history of Australia, the bibliographer Ferguson did not know of the Russian nor French editions of the atlas until he had started work on the second volume of his BIBLIOGRAPHY, where in the addenda to Volume I, he describes only a French reissue of 1835, which he could cite only from an entry in a London bookseller's catalogue of 1940: "This atlas, the first attempt at a Systematic Cartographical representation of the islands of the Pacific, is of the greatest rarity. The charts are drawn on a large scale and give far more detail than those of Arrowsmith and Admiral Espinosa…" (Ferguson 1130a). Only in the 1986 volume of ADDENDA is reference finally made to this first French edition (972a; still with no copy seen). Phillips and Lada- Morcarski likewise do not note this edition. This copy contains a presentation inscription from Krusenstern to the Admiral Login Hayden, the victor at the Battle of Navarino and the future military governor of Kronstadt and Reval-Tallinn. Hayden was Dutch but offered his services to Catherine the Great in 1795, the last year of her reign, and by 1826 commanded the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1827, he defeated the Turko-Egyptian fleet at Navarino during the Greek War of Independence, and was later made Admiral and military governor by Nicholas I along the Baltic Sea. A excellent copy of an extremely rare atlas, with an outstanding association. ARCTIC BIBLIOGRAPHY 9375. FERGUSON 972a. FORBES HAWAII 581. HOWES K270 (ref). LADA-MOCARSKI 91 (ref). SABIN 38329.

Recollections of John Thurtell, who was executed at Hertford ... for murdering Mr. W. Weare ...

London : Knight & Lacey, 1824. Octavo, recent half black morocco over marbled boards, gilt, spine with raised bands lettered in gilt, modern marbled endpapers, frontispiece engraving, A correct view of the execution, taken on the spot by an eminent artist(as called for by Ferguson), with a second frontispiece engraving (apparently not present in any institutional copies), Elstree Churchyard and Weare's grave; this additional engraving bears the imprint of B. Bensley, Bolt Court, Fleet Streeton the verso, but its format and framing are identical to the main frontispiece; 44 pp; occasional spotting, page 44 with a few ink marks, else a very good copy. Ferguson, 963. This work was published as an appendix to Pierce Egan's contemporary account of the trial of John Thurtell and Joseph Hunt for the murder of William Weare. In 1823, in what was known at the time as the Elstree Murder or the Radlett Murder, John Thurtell murdered solicitor William Weare near Radlett in Hertfordshire, in a dispute over a gambling debt. Thurtell and his accomplices buried Weare's corpse near Elstree, a neighbouring village. Following their arrest and trial, Thurtell and one of his accomplices, Joseph Hunt, were found guilty of murder. Thurtell's punishment was execution by hanging followed by dissection of his body. Hunt was also sentenced to death but this was commuted to transportation to New South Wales for life. Hunt was eventually emancipated and became a police constable in Sydney, where he died in 1861. Numerous works about the murder of William Weare were published in 1824 and are listed in Ferguson (under Hunt, Joseph: Ferguson, 954-970). The copy ofRecollections of John Thurtell which we offer here appears to be an uncommon variant with two engraved plates by Bensley. The extra plate, depicting the Elstree Churchyard, does not appear to have been issued separately and it would seem to have been produced especially for this publication, although not included in most copies. Three copies (with only one engraved plate) are recorded in Australian collections (National Library of Australia; University of Melbourne Library; State Library of New South Wales).

Mémoire sur les causes des maladies des marins et sur les soins à prendre pour conserver leur santé

dans les ports et à la mer. Paris : Annales maritimes et coloniales. II.e partie. Année 1824. - Juin. Octavo, bound in contemporary marbled wrappers, pp [2], 457-541, with an engraved diagram of a furnace ventilator (p.540); light browning to some of the leaves, but a very good copy. Text in French. An important treatise on the causes of, and preventive measures for, maritime sicknesses. Keraudren was a French naval officer, surgeon and Inspecteur général du service de santé de la marine between 1813 and 1845. The first edition of this work was published in 1817, and a separately published second edition also appeared in 1824, making this variant, published as a bulletin of the Annales maritimes et coloniales, the third known version. Specific references are made by Keraudren to observations made by numerous navigators, including Cook (p.12 / p.30: his use of fire to purify the air below decks; p.16: his placement of a kitchen in steerage, to maintain dryness), and Labillardière (p.102; the possible benefits of chewing betel for intestinal health). Not in Beddie; no copy of either the first or second edition is recorded in Australian collections; the periodicalAnnales maritimes et coloniales appears to held in Monash University Library and State Library of Victoria.
