Memoria que el Ministro Secretario de Hacienda presenta al Congreso de la Republica de Chile. Diciembre de 1824.

Santiago de Chile, Imprenta Nacional, December 1824. - 14 pp., (2 ll.). 4°, disbound. A few light stains, but overall in good to very good condition. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Benavente opens this bitter report to the Chilean Congress on the state of government finances by stating that there is nothing satisfactory to report and that Congress's instructions to him were either impossible to fulfill or ridiculous. He complains that his attempts to solve the financial crisis have not been appreciated: "Nunca se valoriza justamente lo que ha hecho un Gobierno; pero siempre se critica acervamente lo que ha dejado de hacer" (p. 9). In the course of the discussion he mentions the expedition to Chiloé (whose capture in 1826 marked the end of the struggle for Chilean independence), the state of the Chilean navy, the suppression of an Indian rebellion in the south (pp. 8-9), and the monopoly on tobacco and other goods held by Portales, Céa y Compañia. Scattered throughout are facts and figures, e.g., the revenue produced under Spanish rule by tobacco sales.Having supported José Miguel Carrera in the War of Independence, Benavente (1790-1867) fled to Buenos Aires while O'Higgins was in power. From 1823-1825, under Ramón Freire, he served as minister of Finance, but his support of the Portales, Céa y Compañía monopoly made him unpopular. In the 1830s he opposed Portales. From 1834 to 1861 he was elected senator nine times.---- Briseño I, 200. OCLC: 79398599 (John Carter Brown Library). Not located in CCPBE. Not located in Rebiun. Not located in Copac. (Santiago de Chile, Imprenta Nacional), n.d. (1824). - Caption title. 52 pp. [final page misnumbered 62]. 4°, disbound (traces of wrappers). Light dampstains on last few leaves. Overall in good to very good conditon. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION. The author derides those who claim that the earthquake which struck Chile on November 19, 1822 was the result of natural causes, rather than punishment by God for the sins of the residents. Several pages are devoted to an attack on Bishop Gaspar Villaroel, a Jesuit who had claimed that the earthquake of 1674 (which destroyed much of Santiago) was the result of natural causes. The Harvard University catalogue attributes the work to Tadeo Silva, a Dominican, and notes that it was written in response to articles by Camilo Henríquez published in @El Mercurio, nos. 16-17.---- Briseño I, 32: calling for 62 pp., and giving the date as 1824. Previous owner's small bookplate on front pastedown of both volumes. Overall a very good set. "In 1823, about half a century before Velasco published his inaugural translation, we find an article that highlights the need for a 'poetic translation' of Shakespeare's works. The author of the article was Joseph Blanco White, priest, journalist, political and religious thinker, literary critic, and translator. He was born in Seville, in 1775. At that time, his name was José Maria Blanco. His paternal grandfather, William White, had come to Spain from Ireland in the early 18th century to run a mercantile house, and, at some point, the family name was changed to 'Blanco' (Spanish for 'White'). José María had a strict Catholic formation, but, profoundly disappointed with the Church and with Spanish politics, he moved to London in 1810, he converted to Protestantism and he changed his name to Joseph Blanco White. He kept both the Spanish and the English versions of his name side by side, and this doubling reflects an awareness of the double context in which he was writing. He becomes deeply interested in British literature, particularly in the new Romantic ideas, but he never lost sight of the situation in Spain He was concerned with the relations between the Peninsula and its Spanish-American colonies, and he enthusiastically wrote in support of the colonies' autonomy from the Central Council at Seville. In fact, he published his proposal for translating Shakespeare poetically in the quarterly Variedades o Mensagero de Londres, a journal he edited for the London printing house of Rudolph Ackermann but which was addressed to Spanish-American readers. This context is important for understanding Blanco White's theoretical stance. His contact with Romanticism, for instance, gave him tools to defend Shakespeare against the attacks of French and Spanish neoclassicists. He explains that a 'poetic translation' has the benefit of conveying the general 'tone of thought' and the transcendent 'originality of Shakespeare's genius'- even when it cannot reproduce his 'particular beauties' which, for Blanco White, are inseparable from the language in which they were written. But the proposal to translate Shakespeare's works as poetry- by which he meant lyric poetry-has other implicit benefits: it displaces the focus away from the terrain of the theatre and from the standards of unity and decorum that were the stronghold of neoclassicism. Indeed, he explicitly argues that Shakespeare's genius stands apart from the 'frenzies' of the theatre of his time." (The Oxford Handbook of Shakespeare Poetry Pg 696-697). The Triumph of Life [Shelley’s latest composition, left unfinished]. Fragments from an Unfinished Drama. Prince Athanase. Ode to Naples. Marianne’s Dream [ previously published in The Literary Pocket-Book, edited by Leigh Hunt, 1819]. Mont Blanc [previously published in History of a Six Weeks’ Tour, 1817]. Miscellaneous Poems[fifty-nine poems]. Fragments [numbering nie, including Charles the First and Prince Athanase, Pt, II]. Alastor, or The Spirit of Solitude [ first published in 1816]. Translations [numbering five]. It was with difficulty that a publisher was found for the book, the sale of two hundred and fifty copies being guaranteed by Thomas Lovell Beddoes, Bryan Waller Proctor (“Barry Cornwall”) and Thomas Forbes Felsall. The original intentions to include certain prose pieces was abandoned on account of the size of the volume. (GRANNIS, 80)

Mary Shelley’s campaign to make the world appreciate Percy Shelley’s genius and personal virtues was astutely planned. She decided to publish first his posthumous poems, then his prose. Some private verses she did not consider including, and she omitted his polemic poems - though she circulated them privately - in order to show “how he could write without shocking people, ” after which the public would be receptive to his complete works. In this decision she also deferred to John Hunt, recently imprisoned for an Examiner attack on Parliament and soon to be fined for publishing Byron’s “Vision of Judgement. ”The Posthumous Poems of Percy Shelley were published in June 1824 and included sixty-five unpublished poems, thirteen out of print, and five translations. Mary Shelley’s preface went straight to the point of Shelley’s ill repute: “his fearless enthusiasm in the cause which he considered the most sacred upon earth, the improvement of the moral and physical state of mankind, was the chief cause why he, like other illustrious reformers, was pursued by hatred and calumny. ” Ignoring his controversial private life, she extolled his virtues and gifts, and described her terrible vigil at Lerici. Posthumous Poems accomplished what Mary Shelley intended: before it, Shelley’s immorality, destructiveness, and incomprehensibility where legend, and he was largely unread; upon its publication there was a surge of interest a he seemed at once more accessible and admirable. Moreover though she has been charged with initiating the legend of the ethereal Shelley, that legend evolved out of his projection of himself and a cultural shift from the Byronic ideal to oneof pre-Victorian evangelism, dedication, and earnestness. Besides he grew to be a hero to radicals as well. On July 23 Mary was shocked to learn that Sir Timothy Shelley was infuriated by Posthumous Poems and would terminate her allowance unless she withdrew it from circulation, stopped publication of the prose, and moreover promised not to publish anything by our about Shelley during his own lifetime. Three hundred copies of the poem and been sold, about tenfold more than any of the poems published in Shelley’s lifetime. , and the projected prose volume was slim. After urgent consultations with Peacock, who negotiated with with Whitton, she capitulated to Sir Timothy. (SUNSTEIN,248, 257, 260); 415 pages .

Touch at the Fine Arts, A

, 1824 1824. Artists Jargon Satirically DefinedRare In Original BoardsALKEN, Henry. A Touch at the Fine Arts. Illustrated by Twelve Plates, with Descriptions by Henry Alken. London: Published by Thomas M’Lean, Repository of Wit and Humour, 1824. First edition. Quarto (10 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches; 273 x 190 mm.). [28] pp. Twelve hand-colored soft-ground etchings. Each plate with a leaf of descriptive letterpress. With the half-title and the leaf of advertisements present.Original quarter crimson roan over drab boards with printed pink title laid on. Some expected corner-wear and rubbing and soiling to boards. Early repairs to spine head and foot, otherwise and internally clean and excellent copy.“A Touch at the Fine Arts…is, according to the preface, ‘an attempt to elucidate, by graphic delineations, a variety of terms generally and perhaps exclusively made use of by artists, amateurs, connoisseurs, virtuosos, and the like. Long, indeed, has a generous public been, doubtless, puzzled in the endeavour to discover some ray of meaning in those glowing, brilliant and forcible phrases, which the critical catalogues, Catalogues Raisonnées, etc., of the day are woefully burthened with.’ It is a cheap kind of humour at the best. To take two of the most deserving subjects—‘A Moving Effect; the Execution rapid,’ is represented by a runaway coach, with expressions of the utmost horror in the faces and attitudes of the occupants; ‘A Striking Effect, the handling by no means good or pleasant to the eye,’ is illustrated by a fracas between two returning roisterers and some night-watchmen. In these and in plate 2, a prison-scene depicting ‘An unpleasant effect, but the Keeping is Good,’ Alken shows genuine power as a draughtsman, and infuses his work with a character lacking elsewhere. The last plate, indeed, might almost be a coloured lithograph from the hand of Daumier. All twelve plates, it should be said, are soft-ground etchings, with colour applied by hand” (Martin Hardie). The Plates:1. —An Imposing Effect 2. Unpleasant in Effect—but the keeping is Good3. A Moving Effect—the Execution Rapid4. A Striking Effect—The handling by no means good, or pleasnat to the eye5. All Effect—The Subject far from good, but Rich6. A Forcible Effect7. A Sudden Effect8. A surprising Effect—but no Execution9. A Very Warm Effect10. A powerful Effect—but the subject rather hurried11. A Spirited Effect—but no order kept in the grouping of the Figures12. A very Brilliant EffectMartin Hardie, pp. 183-184 and 319. John Henry Newman and Charlotte Mary Yonge both praised Sintram and his Companions. William Morris also became an admirer of Sintram and his Companions, and it influenced Morris' own fiction. Sintram and his Companions and Undine are referred by Louisa May Alcott in Little Women; Jo March mentions wanting them for Christmas in the first chapter of the book and finally receives them in chapter 22. Furthermore, Aslauga's Knight, as well as Sintram and his Companions and Undine are referred to in Jo's Boys, the final book in Alcott's Little Women series, where Aslauga's Knight mirrors the character Dan and his affection for gentle Bess.Cohn 475.
