WHOLE ART OF BOOK-BINDING, CONTAINING VALUABLE RECIPES FOR SPRINKLING, MARBLING, COLOURING, &C.|THE

Richmond, VA: Peter Cottom, 1824. contemporary quarter calf over paper covered boards in later clamshell box. 2511|79990|101405|102279/PR. Bookbinding. 12mo. contemporary quarter calf over paper covered boards in later clamshell box. iv, 60 pages. First American from the third English edition, with "considerable additions" (See S-K 7258. Pollard no.89). The 1811 English printing was the first English book devoted entirely to bookbinding. "It is very much a working bookbinder's notebook put in order for publication and owes little to the encyclopaedias." The best description of this important book appears in Highlights from the Bernard C. Middleton Collection of Books on Bookbinding (Rochester, NY, 2000, No.9, page 32): "The first English bookbinding manual, published more than a century after the earliest Continental ones. This slim, unillustrated book covers forwarding somewhat cursorily, but the sections on the sprinkling of book-edges, the sprinkling and marbling of leather covers, and the preparation of the colours are more than detailed. Gold tooling and stationery binding are also dealt with. In these days of complete openness among craftspeople, those of the younger generation may wonder why the book was published anonymously. The reason was that secretiveness was very prevalent at the time and, indeed, persisted in some quarters well within living memory. This apparent meanness of spirit can be understood in the light of very harsh industrial and social conditions and the complete lack of benefits paid by the State. Marblers, in particular, often erected partitions or kept the inquisitive out of their room in order not to be observed at work, so an author who divulged details of the 'art and mystery' of the craft would expect hostility from fellow practitioners. Authors of most later manuals were identified, but they gave generalized instructions which did not include the multitude of essential 'wrinkles' which greatly facilitate procedures. The question of authorship has exercised the minds of a number of historians. I have insufficient space fully to summarize the arguments. Suffice it to say that three candidates have been named: W. Price, an Oswestry binder, whose earliest date in directories is 1828; Nathaniel Minshall, the printer of the manual, and admitted as a solicitor in 1819; and Henry Parry, author of The Art of Bookbinding published in 1817. Of the three, Parry seems the most likely; the Oswestry volume was registered at Stationers' Hall in the name of Henry Parry, so it would be a remarkable coincidence if he were not the author." This American edition is even more scarce than the English edition with only 11 copies cited in OCLC. This copy's foldout table in the back which lists prices for New York bookbinders is torn with most lacking, but facsimile reprint, with letter from previous bookseller, inserted.

A complete collation of the oblong atlas volume is as follows: volume II (1825): pp. [2] (title page), 3-10 (explanation of plates), 27 plates (26 numbered plates + one unnumbered plate called “cercle méthodologique”); III (1827): [ii] (title page), plate explanation), six plates; IV (1828) [ii] (title page and verso, list of plates), eight plates. Some damp-staining, however limited to the plates of volume II, thus probably from before binding.         A Selection of Ancient Coins (of Magna Graecia and Sicily) later published as Specimens of Ancient Coins

London: Septimus Prowett, 1824. First printing. Leather quarters_hardback. Very Good. Del Frate, Henry Moses. This rarity on offer here preceded the famous 1826 edition by the same publisher, which was entitled "Specimens of Ancient Coins", while this earlier edition is titled "Selection of Ancient Coins" having been published in 1824, and it is thus the missing first edition proper. The spine bears the title in large gilt letters: NOEHDEN'S ANCIENT COINS. These letters are on a rich red leather section which has decorative gilt motifs at each end. The large patterned cloth covers are dark green, with matching leather quarters and spine section. Exterior: condition Very Good. Interior also in Very Good condition, with only occasional light foxing to report. This book contains 33 printed pages of text, plus 10 rich original illustrations of the ancient coins under discussion: Gold coin of the Brutti (x2); Silver coin of Agrigentum; Silver coin of the Camarina (x3); Silver coin of Egesta; Silver coin of Segesta; Silver coin of Catana (x2), all with Noehden's detailed discussions of them. A very insightful early research which showed for certain the ancient Greek & Trojan colonies of southern Italy and Sicily. All pages printed on fine quality paper. There are 8 copies of the later 1826 edition held in British libraries, but only 1 other copy of this earlier 1824 first edition is known to exist, which is held at Exeter library. Ultra rare.

        A. Miaulis beats the Turkish fleet at Kos."

Philhellenic: Munich H. Kohler c1835. Tinted lithograph, as issued, of Andreas Miaoulis, from Peter von Hess's Album of Greek Heroism, or the Deliverance of Greece / Griechenlands Befreiung ... in XXXIX Bildern.[ First edition.] within decorative borders incorporating captions in Greek, German, French & English. The borders are decorated with guns, swords and helmets with the Greek flag to the left; on the right a crucifix and other emblems of the Christian church; at the top Turkish weapons, laid down, with a fez ,and below, sails and naval instruments The image shows Miaoulis on board ship after the Naval Battle of Gerontas which took place near Kos and Leros, at the end of August, 1824. The two fleets first engaged in battle on August 24 between Kos and Alicarnassus. The following day was marked by very poor weather which caused the Greek fleet to take refuge in the Gulf of Gerontas. On August 29, 1824, the main battle was fought between Leros and the coast of Asia Minor. The Greeks, making use of their fireships destroyed some 30 enemy ships and sent the rest fleeing towards Alikarnassos (Bodrum). Many officers were taken prisoner including the commander of the Tunisian fleet. Eventually, the Egyptian fleet retired to Crete while the Turkish fleet returned to the Dardanelles. Andreas Vokos, nicknamed Miaoulis (1768 – 1835), was an admiral and politician who commanded Greek naval forces during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829). Miaoulis, who was of Arvanite origin, was born in Euboea and settled on the island of Hydra east of the Morea and was known among his fellow islanders as a trader in corn who had gained wealth and made a popular use of his money. He had been a merchant captain, and was chosen to lead the naval forces of the islands when they rose against the government of the Sultan. Miaoulis contributed in every way possible to the cause of the resistance against the Turks. He expended the money he had made from his wheat-shipping business during the Napoleonic Wars. Between May 1825 and January 1826,Miaoulis led the Greeks to victory over the Turks in skirmishes off Modon, Cape Matapan, Suda, and Cape Papas. As early as 1822 Miaoulis was appointed navarch, (Greek: Νάυαρχος) or admiral, of the swarm of small vessels which formed the insurgent fleet. He commanded the expedition sent to take revenge for the massacre of Chios in the same year. He was victorious at the Battle of Nauplia in September. In 1824, after the conquest of Psara by the Turks, he commanded the Greek forces which prevented the further progress of the Sultan's fleet, though at the cost of the loss of many fire ships and men. But in the same year he was unable to prevent the Egyptian forces from occupying Navarino, though he harassed them with some success. In 1825 he succeeded in carrying stores and reinforcements into Missolonghi, when it was besieged for the second time, though he could not avert its fall. When independence had been obtained, Miaoulis in his old age was entangled in the civil conflicts of his country, as an opponent of Capodistrias and the Russian Party : he seized some of the principal ships of the Greek fleet at Poros in August 1831, including the Hellas, and destroyed them during the counter-attack of the Russian fleet. He was one of the deputation sent to invite King Otho to accept the crown of Greece, and was made rear-admiral and then vice-admiral by him. Otto also awarded him with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Redeemer. Image bright and clean; light spotting to blank borders; tear [repaired] to lower margin. Peter( Heinrich Lambert} von Hess 1792-1871, was a German painter, known for historic paintings, especially of the Napoleonic Wars and the Greek War of Independence. In 1833, at Ludwig's request, he accompanied Otto of Greece to the newly formed Kingdom of Greece, where at Athens he gathered materials for pictures of the war of liberation. He stayed nine months in Greece, interviewing heroes and eyewitnesses of the 1821 revolution. His first- hand knowledge of the heroes gives power to his work. He drew 39 historical persons The sketches which he then made were placed, forty in number, in the Pinakothek, after being copied in wax on a large scale by Nilsen, in the northern arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich, [sadly now destroyed]. It should be noted that Hess was not present during the Revolution; the paintings are representations of reported events. many are of Greek victories, or of heroic deaths of the Greek leaders. Not in Blackmer ,Droulia or Contominas. Philhellenic Andreas Miaoulis Gerontas Kos

        The Inheritance

Edinburgh and London - William Blackwood and T. Cadell, 1824 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A lovely first edition of Susan Edmonstone Ferrier's humorous second novel, replete with eccentric and poignant gentrified characters. Susan Edmonstone Ferrier (17821854) was a Romantic novelist with a keen eye for the ridiculous, providing entertaining portrait of Scottish society. Her first novel, Marriage, was published anonymously and, although a few people guessed the author's identity, Susan Ferrier denied authorship. It was an immediate success, the lively humour and social satire having great appeal. The author had a sharp eye for the foibles of human nature and several of her more eccentric characters such as Lady Maclaughlan and the three aunts at Glenfern Castle were based on real people. The Inheritance was enthusiastically received; Scott, Henry Mackenzie and his daughters, Francis Jeffrey, Basil Hall, and the Argyll family all expressed their delight. Her friends were able to recognize her father James Ferrier in the character of Uncle Adam Ramsay, and others who read the novel enjoyed speculating on the identity of the characters. Despite its reception, and the fact that her authorship was now widely known, she wished once again to remain anonymous. DNBCondition: In quarter calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally rubbed. One jointiscracked, one starting. Internally, generally firmly bound. Bright and very clean throughout, with just the occasional mark. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

The History of English Poetry from the Close of the Eleventh to the Commencement fo the Eighteenth Century

London: Printed for Thomas Tegg, 1824. Second edition. Four octavo volumes in the publisher's blue-grey paper-covered boards with cloth spines and paper spine lables. Complete with the engraved frontis of Thomas Warton. Staining along spine edge indicates some type of repair to the spine, but no cloth added, not rebacked, recased or otherwise muddled by restoration. Paper worn from board edges and spine cloth chipped at extremities, but internal contents are generally attractive. Warton's work on English Poetry, originally published 1774 - 1781, was quite valuable to the academic community, but Price's editorial notations in the second edition are quite phenomenal. He discusses the importance of Beowulf at length and highlights a few of the alliterative poems contained in M.S. Cott. Nero A.x. This is the first publication of any work from this manuscript, which includes: "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," "Pearl," "Cleanness," and "Patience." All works are attributed to the same author, although still anonymous, it is generally agreed that his late fourteenth century verse is some of the most important from the era.

Original Drawings by Henry Alken for Butcher's Boy and Baker's Boy. A Set of Four Plates

London: S. & J. Fuller, 1824. Full Morocco. Near Fine. Two superb equine color aquatint prints and the original Alken drawings that served as their basis. Elephantine folio sized, 18.87 by 12 inches, 48 by 31 cm. The aquatint prints are watermarked 1826, or two years after the presumed dates of the pencil sketches. S. & J. Fuller was the printer. The aquatints have small differences from the drawings, as one might expect, when the actual engraver was working off of the sketch, as opposed to strictly tracing it. Some details, such as clouds, are absent in the sketches but present in the aquatints. The prints here are especially rich in their coloration, and one can only describe them as pristine versions of the drawings. Starting in the front joints. Rubbing along rear joints. Other edgewear to the binding, which remains a handsome brown morocco, with gilt decoration (ruled lines, elaborate corner floral devices, etc.) With a handsome fabric endpaper.

The Works of William Robertson, D. D

London - William Baynes and Son, 1824 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Ten bright volumes of The Works of William Robertson. Bound in leather with gilt lettering and decoration. Volumes I - X of XII. The works included in this set are the histories of Scotland, the period of Charles V, and America. William Robertson, 1721 1793, was a Scottish historian and Principal of the University of Edinburgh. He was educated in Dalkeith and at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied divinity. He became minister at Gladsmuir in 1743 and later at Lady Yester's Kirk and Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. A staunch Presbyterian and Whig, he volunteered to defend the city against the Jacobites led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745. During his lifetime, Robertson became Royal Chaplain to George III , Principal of the University of Edinburgh, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and Royal Historiographer. He was also a member of the Poker Club. Robertson was a significant figure in the Scottish Enlightenment and also of the moderates in the Church of Scotland. Of Robertsons works, the Dictionary of National Biography tells us, they helped establish historical writing as one of the foremost literary genres of Enlightenment Scotland. The dignity of his style brought equal dignity to the subject matter, and in no small measure Robertson's works helped pave the way for the dominance of history that was to follow in the nineteenth century. Robertsonis the only major British historian of the period to attempt something like a global history, encompassing Scotland, continental Europe, colonial America, and India. Moreover, the focus of each of his works was equally extensive, taking in the broad patterns and movements of history, always seeking to place historical events in their widest context. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some mild bumping and rubbing. There is a small label to the front board of volume 5. Internally the pages are bright with occasional spotting, most prominent to the first and last few pages. There is an ink inscription on the front blank of each volume. Overall the condition is very good..
