The Botanical Cabinet, consisting of coloured delineations of Plants from all Countries, with a short Account of each. Directions for management &cc &cc. Volume X

John and Arthur Arch, Cornhill. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green. Paternoster Row. & C Loddiges & Sons, Hackney, London 1824 - A scarce complete volume of Loddiges' Botanical Cabinet, with 100 hand coloured plates engraved by George Cooke. Conrad Loddiges founded a plant nursery business in Hackney and the family became famous for exotic and rare plants. The mauve rhododendron that has become common in Great Britain today was imported by Conrad Loddiges. The Botanical Cabinet showcases the rare plants that they imported and grew. This volume is volume X, dated 1824. In contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards and endpapers. Top page edges gilt. The spine has gilt compartments and elaborate gilt tooling. There are title and volume labels. Internally there is a decorative title page and then a series of plates, each followed by a brief description on a separate page. There are 100 plates of which 9 are folding. There is an index at the rear. The binding is in very good condition. There is a little rubbing and fraying to the board edges. Internally the preliminaries and title page have browning. There is some brown toning to page edges and some brown spotting/marking to the page edges most visible when the book is closed. The plates do not have tissue guards, so there is sometimes offsetting to the text pages and, very rarely, a return slight darkening on the plate. There is the odd spot otherwise, but the contents are in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Comparative View of the various Institutions for the Assurance of Lives.London: printed for J. Mawman and sold by J. Booth, 1826.

First edition of Babbage's first substantial published work, the first thorough treatise on actuarial theory, complete with folding table of mortality statistics, generally considered the first reliable life table. It serves as an early example of the desire and need for accurate statistics and calculations that would be a driving force throughout Babbage's life. (He was, after all, the man who reputedly once wrote to poet Alfred Lord Tennyson and demanded he change the lines: "Every moment dies a man, Every moment one is born" to "Every moment dies a man, Every moment one and one-sixteenth is born.")<br/><br/> &#10087;Origins of Cyberspace 36. <br/><br/> "Babbage was offered the position of director and actuary of the fledgeling Protector Life Assurance Company with the prospect of an annual income of £2500, a substantial improvement on his father's grudging allowance. He spent several months studying the life assurance business and computed a new set of life tables. The venture was abandoned the day before its scheduled launch on 1 July 1824. Babbage used his actuarial knowledge as the basis for a small popular work, <i>A Comparative View of the Various Institutions for the Assurance of Lives</i> (1826). The book was not intended for the professional actuary but for the general populace unwary of the pitfalls of conveniently misrepresented benefits. It was, at least in part, a work of consumer protection with Babbage self-cast as champion of the exposé" (ODNB). <br/><br/> In this work, Babbage "provided a simple guide to the quantitative basis of life insurance and fulminated against "the disgraceful practices which prevail at some assurance offices" (p. ix), such as allowing lawyers and other interested parties to sell policies on commission. Babbage's book was translated into German in 1827, and formed the basis for the Life Assurance Bank of Gotha, which also adopted Babbage's actuarial tables" (OOC). <br/><br/> Kress 24945; A. W. Van Sinderen, 'The printed papers of Charles Babbage,' <i>Annals of the History of Computing</i>, Vol. 2, 1980, pp. 169-851980, no. 26; <i>Origins of Cyberspace</i> 36.. 8vo (210 x 131 mm), pp. xxxi, 170, [27 of tables, with one folding], contemporary English half calf over marbled boards, gilt red spine label, light wear to extremeties, in all a very fine and clean copy, entirely unrestored

Wahrheit aus Morgensträumen und Idas ästhetische Entwicklung.

Aarau: bei Heinrich Remigius Sauerländer 1824. X + 294 s. Bibl. Dan. III,1040. Goedeke V, 431,11.The book contains the author's notes about her childhood and adolescence until the 1780. Besides the biographical and psychological contributions to the illumination of an excellent woman's development, which took the form of time, it contains many features graciously told about well-known persons life story. Above all, it delivers an image of bourgeois life in Copenhagen, which is not easily surpassed by other memoirs from that time. As a supplement to the book is a portrait of his daughter Ida's development as a counterpart to his mother, and it ends with Friederike Brun's "Lieder für Hellas", written in 1821. (Louis Bobé).         Victory of Sachturis at Samos."

Philhellenic: Munich H. Kohler c1835. Tinted lithograph, as issued, of Georgios Sachtouris during the Battle of Samos, from Peter von Hess&#39;s Album of Greek Heroism, or the Deliverance of Greece / Griechenlands Befreiung ... in XXXIX Bildern.[ First edition.] within decorative borders incorporating captions in Greek, German, French & English. The borders are decorated with guns, swords and helmets with the Greek flag to the left; on the right a crucifix and other emblems of the Christian church; at the top Turkish weapons, laid down, with a fez ,and below, sails and naval instruments. The image shows Sachturis on board ship during the Battle of Samos August 1824. The island of Samos, under its leader, Lykourgos Logothetis, had successfully rebelled against the Ottomans in 1821, and established its own autonomous government. The island&#39;s position however, a few miles off the Anatolian coast, made it vulnerable to a potential Ottoman attack. In the summer of 1824, following the destruction of Psara, the Ottoman fleet and troops assembled on the Anatolian coast, with the intention of capturing the island. Anxious to avoid repeating the failure to protect Psara, the Greek fleet, under admiral Georgios Sachtouris, assembled to guard the island. After some minor engagements on the previous days, the decisive battle occurred on August 17. The Greek fireships, including one under the celebrated Constantine Kanaris, then attacked and succeeded in burning three Ottoman ships, forcing the Kapudan Pasha Mehmed Hüsrev to withdraw. Image bright and clean; a few light spots to blank borders. Peter( Heinrich Lambert} von Hess 1792-1871, was a German painter, known for historic paintings, especially of the Napoleonic Wars and the Greek War of Independence. In 1833, at Ludwig&#39;s request, he accompanied Otto of Greece to the newly formed Kingdom of Greece, where at Athens he gathered materials for pictures of the war of liberation. He stayed nine months in Greece, interviewing heroes and eyewitnesses of the 1821 revolution. His first- hand knowledge of the heroes gives power to his work. He drew 39 historical persons The sketches which he then made were placed, forty in number, in the Pinakothek, after being copied in wax on a large scale by Nilsen, in the northern arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich, [sadly now destroyed].         Histoire generale de la digestion (galley proofs)

Paris. Corrected Galleys of an Unpublished Work Corvisart, Lucien (1824-82). Histoire generale de la digestion [caption title]. Author's interleaved & corrected proofs, bound in 2 vols., 8vo, the first volume comprising the Introduction historique sur la digestion en general. [ix]-clii; 144pp. Both paginations incomplete (text on last pages breaks off in mid-sentence). N.p., n.d. [Paris, not before 1863]. 216 x 138 mm. 19th cent. half calf, a little rubbed. Uneven browning, occasional foxing & soiling, but very good. Modern bookplate. Corrected Galley Proofs, with author's extensive annotations on about one-quarter of the pages, of what appears to be an unpublished work. Corvisart, the nephew of Jean Nicolas Corvisart des Marest, devoted a good portion of his career to the physiology of digestion, performing important research on the pancreas (see Garrison-Morton 1001) and publishing several works in the mid-19th century on various aspects of digestion and nutrition. He may have intended his Histoire generale de la digestion to be his crowning work in this field: written some time after the publication of his Collection de memoires sur une fonction peu connue du pancreas (1857-63), it tackles the entire history of digestion physiology from ancient times to his own era, and presents a detailed study of the function and purpose of the entire digestive and nutritional system from the stomach to the large intestine, with particular emphasis on the pancreas. When we checked OCLC showed no works by Corvisart published after the Collection de memoires, so that our set of corrected proofs represents what may be the only written evidence of Corvisart's scientific work after 1863.         Miroir des Modes Parisiennes

sp;- Paris -Louis Janet, 1824 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce copy of this delightful little informative book outlining early nineteenth-century Parisian fashions. Featuressix colour plates with tissue guards. With a vignette title with tissue-guard. During the 1820s in European and European-influenced countries, fashionable women&#39;s clothing styles transitioned away from the classically-influenced Empire/Regency styles of ca. 17951820 and re-adopted elements that had been characteristic of most of the 18th century (and were to be characteristic of the remainder of the 19th century), such as full skirts and clearly visible corseting of the natural waist. The silhouette of men&#39;s fashion changed in similar ways: by the mid-1820s coats featured broad shoulders with puffed sleeves, a narrow waist, and full skirts. Trousers were worn for smart day wear, while breeches continued in use at court and in the country. Condition: In a decorative full calf binding. Externally excellent with just a little shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Bright despite some marginal age-toning, apart from the plates which are somewhat browned due to the paper used, the colours remaining bright. Generally clean with a few scattered spots and marginal tidemarks. Overall: VERY GOOD..

China: Its Costume, Arts, Manufactures, &c. Edited Principally from the Originals in the Cabinet of the Late M. Bertin: with Observations, Explanatory, Historical, and Literary by M. Breton

London.: Howlett and Brimmer.. [Reprint].. 1824.. Translated from the French. 4 volumes in 2. Complete with 80 full page handcoloured plates. Volume I: 128pp. Volume II: 124pp. Volume III: 135pp. Volume IV: 160pp. Attractive leather bindings, rebacked with backstrip laid down, all edges gilt, little occasional rubbing extremities. Some occasional foxing and browning particularly on 3 of the 4 title pages but largely the plates are unaffected. Neat 19th century inscriptions on one preliminary leaf in each volume. 16mo. Lust 1243; Cordier 65; Reed and Dematte 14 - 1st English editions. Abbey 535 (3rd edition). First published in English in 1813 following the first publication of the work in French 1811 - 12. The delightful coloured plates and the wide coverage of the text meant this was a book with broad appeal which sold well to the early 19th century European public keen to learn more of the world beyond Europe. Described by Reed and De Matte (China on Paper, 2007) as one of the precusors to the modern travel book, the appeal of these books was enhanced by their "striking and sensational illustrations [which] featured material that was ostensibly true but truly extraordinary, that is, outside the frome of daily life in the West. In effect, publications on China were books of wonders.." .

JOURNAL OF A RESIDENCE IN ASHANTEE

1824. DUPUIS, Joseph. JOURNAL OF A RESIDENCE IN ASHANTEE. Comprising notes and researches relative to the Gold Coast, and the Interior of Western Africa; chiefly collected from Arabic MSS. and information communicated by the Moslems of Guinea: to which is prefixed an account of the origin and causes of the present war. London: Printed for Henry Colburn, 1824. First edition. Illustrated with a folding map and fifteen plates, of which three are folding and one a double-spread. [2],viii,xxxviii,[2],264,cxxxvi pp. Quarto, untrimmed. Original binding; brick cloth spine and grey paper boards, with a printed paper spine label. Boards show general wear at edges and moderate soiling. The cloth spine is sunned and worn through in places, revealing a heavier cloth support below, and the label is chipped. Sporadic foxing throughout text leaves, mostly in the margins, with occasional soiling; however, the foxing is moderately heavy on the opening and closing leaves. The plates show light to moderate foxing, and a few of the plates have some splitting at folds. One plate has an irregular closed tear at the inside edge of the plate. The map also has an irregular tear and is missing chip at the inside edge of the plate. Nonetheless, it is a scarce work, complete and in original boards. Lowndes calls it "a valuable work written by a man of talent." (Abbey 281).
