        Traité élémentaire de minéralogie.

Paris, Verdière 1824 - In-8 [209 x 127 mm]. Collation : (4), VI, 856 pp., 1 tableau, 10 planches dépliantes hors-texte. "Mineralogical investigations, particulary experiments with carbonates and other salts, revealed to Beudant a principle of the combination of mineral substance that he expressed in Beudant's law. Essentially, he found that some compounds dissolved in the same solution would precipitate together, forming a crystal whose properties they determined in common. The interfacial angles of this new crystal would have a value intermediate between the angles of the original compounds, proportional to the quantity of each." DSB 2, 106. Papier un peu bruni, bon exemplaire.

The Lives of the Most Eminent Poets

London - Thomas Tegg, G. Offor, G. and J. Robinson et al, 1824. London - Thomas Tegg, G. Offor, G. and J. Robinson et al, 1824 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A highly attractive set of Johnson's famous and influential work, comprising the biographies of 52 poets. Six of the Lives have been singled out as the most important: John Milton, John Dryden, Alexander Pope, Joseph Addison, Jonathan Swift, and Thomas Gray. The Lives, which are critical as well as biographical studies, appeared as prefaces to selections of each poet's work, and they were quite a bit larger than originally anticipated. As Johnson justified in the advertisement for the work, my purpose was only to have allotted to every Poet an Advertisement, like those which we find in the French Miscellanies, containing a few dates and a general character. However, he did not limit himself to a dry series of dates and biography, but created a series of Lives with, according to his 1783 edition Preface, the honest intention of giving pleasure. With the bookplate of one T. U. Cooper to the front pastedown of each volumeComplete in three volumes. Condition: In full calf bindings with intricate tooling to boards. Externally, smart with some shelfwear to the extremities and small marks to the boards. Spines are slightly faded. Internally, firmly bound. Some minor scattered spotting throughout but pages are otherwise clean and generally bright. Very slight loss tofront free endpaper and blank of volume one. Neat ink initials to recto of each front free endpaper. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

Charleston, S.C.: J.R. Schenck, 1821/1824. - Two volumes. [4],[iii]-iv,[iii]-vi,606,14pp. plus six plates bound at rear; viii,743pp. plus six plates bound at rear (for a total of twelve plates) Late 19th-century three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spines gilt, t.e.g. Lightly edgeworn, worn along the joints. Large bookplate on front pastedown of both volumes. Upper outer corner of leaf with pp.77-78 in first volume and leaf with pp.73-74 in second volume torn away, but not affecting text. Quite clean internally. Very good. An important contribution to American botany, and one of the first major botanical works to treat the American South. Elliott was a member of one of the most prominent families in South Carolina. After his graduation from Yale in 1791, he served as a legislator and ran the state bank, but devoted much of his time to his botanical pursuits. This work was originally published in thirteen parts, the first appearing in 1816, which accounts for the eccentric pagination of the first volume.         Bibliotheca Meermanniana, sive catalogus librorum impressorum et codicum manuscriptorum. AUCTION CATALOGUE (date of sale: 8 June 1824 and following).

The Hague: S. & J. Luchtmans, Van Cleef Bros., and B. Scheurleer 1824 - COMPLETE SET, with the 186-page list of PRICES REALIZED, of the sale catalogue of the astounding Meerman collection, 'one of the most famous private libraries in Europe' (Munby), listing ca. 10,000 titles and 1,100 Manuscripts. Gerard Meerman (b. Aachen, 1715, d. Leyden, 1771) was the author of 'Origines Typographicae' (1765), one of the first detailed studies on the history of printing. Here Meerman claimed as the inventor of movable type not Johannes Gutenberg but Laurens Jansz. Koster, of Haarlem. On this matter Meerman was incorrect, although his efforts did much to spread bibliographical scholarship throughout Europe. His 'De Chartae Vulgaris seu lineae origine' (1767) was an extremely early essay on the history of watermarks. Meerman had acquired all the MSS belonging to the College de Clermont, in Paris: a major triumph. The Bibliotheca Meermanniana was inherited -- and greatly augmented -- by his son Johan (1753-1815), an attorney and one of the principal exponents of the foundation of the Royal Library, The Hague. The younger Meerman attempted to donate the entire collection it to that city. After that bequest was refused (sic!) it was sold by auction, for which the present catalogue was the vehicle of sale, realizing a total of 131,000 Guilders; Sir Thomas Phillipps attended the sale of the MSS in person (though the London bookseller Thomas Rodd bid for him) acquiring more than 650 of them (see Munby, Phillipps Studies, III). - To a few copies a portrait of J. Meerman was added, not present here as usual. REFERENCES: De Ricci, p. 120; G. Brunet; Blogie, IV, col. 57-58 (likewise without the portrait); LGB2.       London: Samuel Leigh, 1824. London: Samuel Leigh, 1824. 16 hand-coloured aquatint views after Clark, each numbered and mounted on a thin trip of card (200 x 70mm) with grey wash border top and bottom, contained in the original cardboard 'tray and lid' box with two divisions, hand-coloured aquatinted title label to outside lid, the aquatint views are slightly spotted, the book is rather rubbed with the label on the upper lid faded and stained, lower lip of box missing.

Touch at the Fine Arts, A

, 1824. 1824. Artists Jargon Satirically DefinedRare In Original BoardsALKEN, Henry. A Touch at the Fine Arts. Illustrated by Twelve Plates, with Descriptions by Henry Alken. London: Published by Thomas M’Lean, Repository of Wit and Humour, 1824. First edition. Quarto (10 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches; 273 x 190 mm.). [28] pp. Twelve hand-colored soft-ground etchings. Each plate with a leaf of descriptive letterpress. With the half-title and the leaf of advertisements present.Original quarter crimson roan over drab boards with printed pink title laid on. Some expected corner-wear and rubbing and soiling to boards. Early repairs to spine head and foot, otherwise and internally clean and excellent copy.“A Touch at the Fine Arts…is, according to the preface, ‘an attempt to elucidate, by graphic delineations, a variety of terms generally and perhaps exclusively made use of by artists, amateurs, connoisseurs, virtuosos, and the like. Long, indeed, has a generous public been, doubtless, puzzled in the endeavour to discover some ray of meaning in those glowing, brilliant and forcible phrases, which the critical catalogues, Catalogues Raisonnées, etc., of the day are woefully burthened with.’ It is a cheap kind of humour at the best. To take two of the most deserving subjects—‘A Moving Effect; the Execution rapid,’ is represented by a runaway coach, with expressions of the utmost horror in the faces and attitudes of the occupants; ‘A Striking Effect, the handling by no means good or pleasant to the eye,’ is illustrated by a fracas between two returning roisterers and some night-watchmen. In these and in plate 2, a prison-scene depicting ‘An unpleasant effect, but the Keeping is Good,’ Alken shows genuine power as a draughtsman, and infuses his work with a character lacking elsewhere. The last plate, indeed, might almost be a coloured lithograph from the hand of Daumier. All twelve plates, it should be said, are soft-ground etchings, with colour applied by hand” (Martin Hardie). The Plates:1. —An Imposing Effect 2. Unpleasant in Effect—but the keeping is Good3.
