Rare first edition of a collection of the ordinances and decrees declaring Texas's right to secede from Mexico and setting up an interim government and its laws. Texas had been a Spanish territory and since 1824 part of the Mexican Federation, but large numbers of immigrants from the United States had settled there. When Mexico established its independence from Spain (1821-1824) the immigrants' already uneasy relations with the government authorities worsened. In 1835, the Mexican president, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, abolished the 1824 federal constitution and assumed greater centralized powers. The present book opens with the 7 November 1835 decree in which "the people of Texas" declare that Santa Anna overthrew the legitimate government of Mexico and that Texas therefore claims the right to secede. It is followed by the "Plan and powers of the provisional government of Texas", adopted 13 November. This led to war on 2 October 1835. These declarations are followed by numerous ordinances of the interim government up to 17 January 1836. With Sangorski & Sutcliffe's binder's stamp on the first free endleaf.         Coventry, the Property of the Rt. Honble. Lord Ongley

      J. Watson, London 1824 - Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Fellowes (expertly repaired tears, one touching image area). A fine image of Lord Robert Ongley's favourite trotting horse. William Fellowes (or Fellows) was a painter and engraver working between 1792 and 1825. Little is known of his life other than his work. The present engraving is after his own original, but most of his recorded work is after other artists such as Samuel J.E. Jones and Samuel Howitt. His output was limited, but to judge from the present fine image, it "is a pity that his contribution was so small for he really was in a class better than his contemporaries" (Charles Lane Sporting Aquatints and their Engravers p.79).

      Firmin Didot, Paris 1824 - Stipple engraving printed in black, after Redouté, printed by Rémond. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling. A rare uncoloured impression from the first edition of 'Les Roses': Redouté's most famous work, and perhaps the most celebrated flower book of all time. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the most successful flower painter of all time, produced a work that was not only of great artistic merit, but also formed an invaluable scientific recordl. Redouté described and figured almost all the important roses known in his day, and included were many of the ancestors of today's roses. "The plates in 'Les Roses' have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared' (Gisele de la Roche). The roses used as specimens for the work were taken from the collections of Thory, the Malmaison gardens, and from other collections around Paris. Many of the flowers were novelties in Redouté's time, and a number were dedicated to the memory of his friends and acquaintances, such as l'Héritier de Brutelle and Ventenat. The plates of 'Les Roses' were executed by means of stipple engraving, a method ideally suited to render the nuances of tone found in Redouté's original water-colours. During a trip to London, he met the renowned engraver Francesco Bartolozzi and learned that the most successful impressions of stipple engravings came from well-used plates. Redouté's printers therefore struck a limited number of black plates to take the edge off the plate before printing in colours. This print was printed in black on ochre-tinted paper. The ochre tint has subsequently been removed to reveal Redouté's full mastery of the stipple-engraving technique that this image so effortlessly demonstrates. Cf. Cleveland Collections 807; cf.         XXVII. [The Dances of the Fish [in] The Son of the Fatherland: Historical, Political and Literary Magazine, No. XXVII].

      Grech Skt. Peterburg 1824 - Twelve issues (XXVII to XXXVIII) in two part (No. 95-96) in one volume 8vo (20 x 12.6 cm). 335 incl. title, [1, table of contents]; 288 pp.; very occasional light spotting. Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, flat spine lettered in gilt; a bit rubbed at extremities. First publication of Krylov's fable, reviewed and corrected by Krylov himself, in an influential periodical: a fresh example. It is on pp. 33-35, with the following note: "this fable was printed in the No 7 of 'Sorevnovatel prosvesheniya' of this year, with lacks and mistakes. It is found here, following the wish of the author, with corrections". Krylov (1769–1844) is Russia's best known fabulist. While many of his earlier fables were loosely based on Aesop's and La Fontaine's, later fables were original work, often satirizing the incompetent bureaucracy that was stifling social progress in his time. 'Syn otechestva' was established by Grech in St. Petersburg in September 1812. Defending liberal views in its first decade, it became a leading intellectual and indeed very influential magazine of the Golden Age, until its end 40 years later. Next to other wide-ranging works and news, these issues are also devoted to the latest sensational scientific discovery of the time: the deciphering by the French scholar Jean-Francois Champollion (1790 - 1832) of hieroglyphic writing from Ancient Egypt. The transcript of the Rosetta Stone, published in 1822, was indeed a significant breakthrough. A more detailed work on the system of the Egyptian writing was later published in 1824 in Champollion's most comprehensive work, 'Precis du systeme hieroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens'.         Engraved View of the Settlement at Port Jackson

      Paris: Arthus Bertrand, 1824. Engraved view, 145 x 208 mm.; tipped onto early album leaf with ink ruled margins, moderate discolouration affects left hand side of the plate, otherwise very good. Proof copy from the second edition. Rare proof impression before letters of artist Charles-Alexandre Lesueur's fine view of Sydney Cove, prepared for the 1824 second edition of Péron and Freycinet's Voyage de découvertes aux Terres Australes. Lesueur was appointed to the Baudin expedition as a gunner although his skill as an artist indicates this was an expedient manner of shipping him aboard. After the mass desertions at Mauritius on the voyage out, Lesueur and his companion Nicolas-Martin Petit took on the lion's share of scientific and topographical illustration. Proof states such as this one form an important record of the atlas in its final stages of production and correction.

        Tom Thumb's Play-Book, to Teach Children Their Letters As Soon As They Speak: Or, Easy Lessons For Little Children and Beginners. Being A New and Pleasant Method to Allure Little Ones into the First Principles of Learning

      Newcastle: Printed by G. Angus, in the Side. 1824.. 16mo. 48 pp. Original printed blue wrappers. Abrasions with loss to the spine and the lower cover, the contents very good. 24 small woodcuts, one for each letter of alphabet, omitting J and U, plus what is effectively a frontispiece featuring the royal crest with a four line verse regarding the Lion and the Unicorn, another 2 woodcuts set into the text later on and 4 further woodcuts on the wrappers. Hugo, 456, describes the use of some of the the non-alphabet engravings, which are after Thomas Bewick, in other works, namely the appearance of the woodblocks on the covers in his "Select Fables" and the use of two cuts also from Hastie's "The Only Method to Make Reading Easy". Cf. Osborne Collection, volume II, p. 742, referencing a variant issue of the same date with the name "T. Bell" in the imprint also mentioned by Hugo. Cf. Tattersfield, TB 2.631, for a description of a much earlier work with the same title published in Newcastle by T. Angus which may or may not be related and also TB 2.221 for a further appearance of the woodblocks on the covers. One of a number of similarly titled illustrated alphabets published in England, including several in the north east, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This particular iteration is evidently uncommon, with Copac bringing up the British Library copy, with Bell's name in the imprint, and two other copies, in the National Trust collection and Oxford, bearing just Angus' name.

        Séances Nautiques, ou exposé des Diverses Manoeuvres du Vaisseau

      Bachelier, Paris 1824 - Octavo, folding map, fine and uncut in publisher's wrappers with printed label. Book on naval vessels from the library of Henri de Freycinet. Fine association copy, affectionately inscribed by the author to Henri de Freycinet. Henri de Freycinet, older brother of Louis, served as lieutenant on board the Géographe during the Baudin expedition to Australia of 1800-1804. He was responsible for much of the mapping of the Australian coastline, and on his return was keenly involved in promoting the atlas of the voyage in France. Henri had joined the navy in 1794 and went on to a long and distinguished career, including a great deal of action against the British. He lost his right arm in battle in 1806, and was twice imprisoned. He attained the rank of rear admiral in 1828 and also served as governor of Ile Bourbon (Réunion). Pierre-Marie-Joseph de Bonnefoux (1782-1855) was French naval captain and veteran of the Napoleonic era. In 1806 he was captured and detained by the English for an extended time, providing an opportunity to observe innovations of the Royal Navy such as the flag telegraph system. With the restoration, Bonnefoux was made a Knight of St. Louis and member of the Legion d'Honneur. Appointed to the Royal marine college at Angoulême, Bonnefoux authored several standard works of naval instruction, of which Séances Nautiques is an example. Later in life he wrote a life of Christopher Columbus. The warm inscription reflects the camaraderie between the two veterans. It reads 'Henri de Freycinet , Captn. De Vaisseau &c. &c. Hommage d'attachment, de reconnaisance, de Respect, De la part de l'auteur'. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

      - First edition. London, 1824. 2 vols. Hcloth. Orbds. (dustsoiled). (First pages of vol. I waterstained). Bigmore & Wyman: One of the few standard works on the art of printing in the English language, this is perhaps the most familiar. It abounds with information of a very useful character, spiced with conceits manifesting the originality, humour, and freshness of the author. The type, never larger than brevier, sometimes is as small as pearl. The second volume may be described as practical, in contradistinction to the first, which is historical. It gives a description of types, directions for composing, for press and warehouse work, &c. It is particularly rich in foreign alphabets, a feature which has gained for it great estimation. Altogether the volume is a congeries of practical miscellanies of the most interesting character. Whatever its defects and shortcomings, it has long since become, and deservedly, a printer's classic, and one in which the youngest apprentice as well as the most experienced journeyman finds matter of an amusing as well as useful nature.

Following his coronation in July of 1821, George IV visited Ireland in August and September of the same year. The following summer he sailed for Scotland landing at Leith on 14 August, he remained in Edinburgh until 29 August before returning to England. Schetky, Marine Painter Extraordinary to the King and the Duke of Clarence, here recalls the events at Leith. Not in Deak William James Bennett Master of the Aquatint View New York, 1988. The paper wrappers are a little worn else in very good condition. After doing a little research on this book, it isn't on COPAC, but it is a French book, there was another edition with the same woodcuts and similiar hand colouring published by A.Besançon, [?Paris] dated 1824.         Album with 47 charming drawings in several media by Paul Voituron (1824-1891) of Ghent and his sisters(?) and friends in France, Switzerland, Holland and Flanders.Various places, [1831-]1842-1844. Oblong (12.5×24 cm). With 47 drawings including the full-length colour portrait of what may be the gentleman-artist Paul Voituron, 8 coloured drawings (including 6 of flowers), 11 black and white drawings, 21 drawings with sepia (and in one case also red) washes, and 6 drawings with black and white washes, some highlighted with white chalk. Contemporary green textured half cloth, blind-stamped green textured paper sides, gilt edges.

      For Paul Voituron: Van Praet & D'Hondt, Paul Voituron (1824-1891) en zijn denktank: levensschets en progressief gedachtegoed van een Gentse liberaal (2012). An album containing 47 mostly small pen and ink wash, pencil, watercolour and pastel drawings, several in colour. Several are signed by Paul Voituron (1824-1891) and his sisters(?) Hortense and Virginia Voituron, and the Mary who signed many drawings without a family name may be a Voituron as well. Paul Voituron was to become known as a progressive thinker in Ghent, but the Ghent University Library also has a large collection of his drawings. Other drawings in the album must have been drawn by famiy friends. The first drawing in the album is dated 1842 and several are dated 1842-1844, so one dated 1831 may have been mounted in the album long after it was drawn. Most of the drawings contain one or more human subjects, sometimes in portraits, other times as figures in landscapes. There are also several flower drawings. Together they give a charming view of daily life in Europe in the early 1840's. A few album leaves are detached and frayed at the edges, but the drawings themselves are in very good condition. The binding has lost its backstrip and is rubbed, with the sewing somewhat loose. A charming set of drawings by young ladies and gentlemen from Ghent on a Grand Tour of Europe.

Very rare publication with 10 very detailed plates depicting the anatomy of the horse. In his preface the author-artist Joseph Machold (1824-1889), painter, illustrator and a former officer in the Austrian army, explains that this publication was made by order of the Austrian army to educate the soldiers in the anatomy of the horse and that the Ministry of War gave him the opportunity by to conduct the studies he needed to produce it in the Royal veterinary institute in Vienna. His paintings were lithographed by Varrone and the plates printed by F. Köke in Vienna. Holzhausen, the printer of the letterpress text, was printer at the printing office of the Imperial University.With an ink stamp twice on the front wrapper. In very good condition, with marginal restorations to the title-page, some text-leaves frayed and marginally soiled; the plates with some spotting. Front wrapper soiled and with tears repaired. Rare anatomical plates of the horse, published to educate soldiers of the Austian army.

        Map of the State Of New York

      Anthony Finley, Philadelphia 1824 - First edition of a highly important pocket map of New York State. Orleans County is not yet present. A second edition, with Orleans County, and dated 1825, was included in Finley's A New American Atlas (1826). Rumsey notes that the atlas was an "attempt to compete with Tanner's American Atlas. the cartography and engraving are equal to Tanner, although the scale and map size are smaller." In 1831 the plates for the atlas were sold to S. Augustus Mitchell, who revised the maps and brought out a new edition in that year. Mitchell continued to issued the maps separately in pocket form until about 1850. Not in Phillips. Rumsey 2587. Full period color, 17 x 20½ inches, folding into gilt-stamped brown leather covers with front cover stamped "New York." Inset in lower left: "Profile of the Grand Erie Canal."         Critical Inquiry Into Antient Armour, As It Existed In Europe, But Particularly In England, From the Norman Conquest To The Reign Of King Charles II: With A Glossary Of Military Terms Of The Middle Ages

First Edition of one of three ìepoch-making books on costume [by] Charles Hamilton Smith and Samuel Rush Meyrick, written as they were from the point of view of the antiquary and the scholarî (Prideaux), the other two being Smithís Selections of the Ancient Costume of Great Britain and Ireland (1814) and Smith and Meyrickís Costume of the Original Inhabitants of the British Isles (1814). Meyrick, a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, accumulated a magnificent collection of armour, and his expert advice was sought by the authorities at the Tower of London in 1825 as to the arrangement of the national collection of arms and armour. Two years later he arranged the collection at Windsor Castle at the request of George IV, for which service he was rewarded with a knighthood. The Inquiry combines thoroughness and strict historical accuracy with excellence of delineation (most of the colored plates were based on drawings by Colonel Charles Hamilton Smith), quality of execution, and rich and effective colouring that is often heightened with gold and silver. ìThis laborious work, practically the first on the subject, remains an authority.î (DNB) Martin Hardie p. 155.         A Favourite Poodle Hatching Poultry!! or A present of Feather Breeches from the Sandwich Isles

      London: J. Fairburn, June, 1824. Handcoloured engraving (240 x 340 mm.); faint creases from earlier folding, but a very bright copy. Kamehameha and Kamamalu an exotic tease for "Poodle" Byng. A wonderful and very rare British satirical print from the time of the royal visit to London by King Kamehameha II and Queen Kamamalu in 1824. The print was published in June of the same year: that is, at the very moment when enthusiasm for the Hawaiian visitors was at its peak, and before their melancholy death from measles in July. Cruikshank depicts three of the Royal party bedecked in feathered outfits, which is all the more ironic given that British society was agog at their sophistication, 'wearing coats by a London tailor, and stays and gowns by a Parisian modiste' (Byron, Voyage of H.M.S. Blonde). Here each of the three is muttering gibberish, no doubt fondly imagined by Cruikshank to be a droll imitation of the Hawaiian language. The joke is made at the expense of the Honourable Frederick Gerald "Poodle" Byng (1784-1871), a close friend of Beau Brummel, and a dandy known for his gaming debts. Byng was appointed to escort the Hawaiian party during their unexpected visit to London in 1824. He had light curly hair and was never seen in public without a poodle at his side, earning his nickname from Brummel: espying Byng and his poodle in a curricle, he is said to have greeted him 'how d'ye do, Byng? A family vehicle, I see'. As the Hawaiian king's other name "Liholiho" was thought to mean "dog of dog", Byng's appointment was considered most diverting to Regency wits. Byng, who has adopted a feathered skirt of his own, is pictured exclaiming: 'Egad these breeches are a valuable present - I'll turn 'em to account. Dash my Wig if I don't open a concern in opposition to the Steam & hatch Chickens by the Grose, in the Natural way, I shall then be able to supply your Sandwich Majesties, and other Majesties, Tables with the Real Poodle Poultry, of the finest flavour in the Universe'. A note lying discarded at his feet hints at his taste for gaming. It reads: 'Lost £500 at B-ks's. NB saw them all out, started at 5 in ye Morning'. The note probably refers to Brooks's, the Whig gentleman's club.

        Jocko, Anecdote détachée des lettres inédites sur l'instinct des animaux

      Paris: [J Tastu for ] P. Persan, 1824. Duodecimo, some foxing, localised stain affects the final leaf; good in contemporary quarter sheep with marbled boards. A beautiful friendship in a faraway land. First edition: a curious tale exploring the dual nature of humans and primates, rich in philosophical reflection and purportedly based upon scientific and voyage literature. Charles Pougens (1755-1833) was an indefatigable scholar and linguist whose promising diplomatic career was cut short when blinded by the pox at 24 years of age. Pougens continued as a man-of-letters and publisher who enjoyed close contact with luminaries and intellectuals of the era. Jocko is a fictional work, relating the experiences of a traveller who forms a friendship with a female orang-outang on an unnamed island in the New World. Similarities between human and orang-outang behaviour are explored, although the simian is presented as an innocent ultimately duped by human greed. The author's insatiable erudition is attested by the 84 pages of evidence that accompany the short story; every aspect of the tale is linked to scientific and voyage literature. A galaxy of scholars and travellers are enlisted in the cause, including naturalists such as Cuvier and Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire, philosophers, and a number of famous voyagers including Schouten, Dampier and Bergeron. These notes are followed by an equally impressive alphabetical list of authors cited. The list is bibliographically detailed (we learn, for instance, that Pougens consulted the 1711-1712 Amsterdam edition of Dampier issued in five volumes). The scholarly nature of Jocko did not diminish the popular appeal of the story; a second edition appeared the same year and theatrical adaptations attracted large audiences.

        The City of Edinburgh

      Smith, Elder & Co, London 1824 - A lyrical view of Georgian Edinburgh: 'the Athens of the North', from John Clark's 'Views in Scotland'. There is some debate as to who executed this stunning print. There is no reference which identifies the author of this view, but there is some indication that it is the work of the celebrated painter John Heaviside Clark (1770-1863). Born in Scotland, Clark exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1801 and 1832. He was primarily a landscape and marine painter, but he also produced a number of fine aquatints, which exhibit his exceptional talents as an engraver. Known as "Waterloo Clark" for his early sketches of the battle of Waterloo, he was a painter of some repute across the British Isles, and his beautiful views remain some of the most attractive images of the English countryside. A contemporary gazetteer notes that 'Edinburgh presents, from almost every point of view whence it can be viewed such scenic and architectural groupings as are perhaps unrivalled in any existing city in the world. It possesses attractions peculiarly its own, and fixes the gaze and challenges the admiration of a spectator by displays of general excellence, unaided by the sumptuousness of any one object, and undegraded by the deteriorations from its prevailing style of magnificence.'         West's Characters, in the Grand Historical Ballet Called La-Perouse , or the Desolate Island

      London: W. West "at his Theatrical Print Warehouse", 25 October, 1824. Two quarto engraved sheets, each with multiple images, 240 x 190mm; in good condition, corners just chipped. Very rare: Pacific voyage costumes. Extremely scarce and apparently not recorded: these two sheets show the main characters in John Fawcett's highly popular play La Pérouse, or the Desolate Island which had been performed at the Theatre Royal and many other English theatres from 1801 well into the 1820s. The play is known chiefly from Fawcett's libretto Life of La Perouse and a handful of surviving play-bills, and West's figures provide a remarkable opportunity to better understand the staging of this popular pantomime. These two costume plates were produced by William West for the "Toy Theatre" market. West, a London stationer, is thought to have developed his Toy Theatre around 1811, when he began to produce printed sheets depicting characters from various popular plays of the day. The cartouches suggest that there were originally a total of three plates, although given that all of the main characters are present, it is possible that the putative third sheet was a background or, indeed, never existed. La Pérouse's disappearance in 1788 had aroused the imagination of the public. Various sensational explanations appeared as books and plays, all exploring the possible fate of the expedition. This version has La Pérouse, the only survivor of the shipwreck, ending up in the company of a native woman from an island north of Japan, Umba. When a ship arrives to rescue him with his wife and son on board Umba becomes jealous and violent and betrays him to her hostile countrymen, who capture the family; just before they are to be killed a loyal and savvy chimpanzee intervenes and with the help of the marines they are rescued. Toy Theatres became a popular form of family entertainment during the early nineteenth century. More lavishly decorated forms were out of reach for all but the children of the wealthy. West's plates enjoyed a big sale at the modest price of "1d. Plain", to be coloured and cut out by children. They were so popular that at his peak West is said to have been taking over £30 a week. Twelve characters are shown here on the two sheets, including a fierce looking Umba, Kanko (Umba's suitor), Negaski (Umba's father), the chimpanzee, two American Indians, Madame Pérouse, Conge (African servant to Madame La Pérouse), son Theodore and Pérouse in two different costumes. MacLaren in his bibliography of La Pérouse listed several pamphlets and play-bills relating to the pantomime (see 333-340), but did not know these West plates. Not recorded by Forbes or Ferguson.

        An Accurate Description of Greece

Three volumes, octavo, with seven folding engraved maps and plates; a fine set in contemporary dark green half morocco, gilt, with the library label of Kimbolton Castle. A handsome set of Pausanias' Description of Greece, the second-century guide-book to the Peloponnese and northern Greece. Pausanias' fascinating and wide-ranging description of ancient Greek life and culture was conceptualised and organised geographically rather than chronologically, and comprises a series of reminiscences of classical Greek life evoked by his visits to ancient monuments. A proud Greek living in the Roman Empire, he could not help but muse about the golden age of Greece, which in his lifetime was but an idealised memory. Although ignored during his own lifetime, Pausanias' work has proved to be of great importance for our present-day understanding of the period. Archaeologists have made much use of his descriptions to identify the remains of ancient sites. As Sir James Frazer wrote, 'Without [Pausanias] the ruins of Greece would for the most part be a labyrinth without a clue, a riddle without an answer. His book furnishes the clue to the labyrinth, the answer to many riddles. It will be studied so long as ancient Greece shall continue to engage the attention and awaken the interest of mankind'. This is the second edition in English, translated by Thomas Taylor the Platonist. The maps, one of Ancient Greece and one of the world, are after the French cartographer Jean-Baptiste d'Anville; the plates are after painter and architect James Stuart.

Long, indeed, has a generous public been, doubtless, puzzled in the endeavour to discover some ray of meaning in those glowing, brilliant and forcible phrases, which the critical catalogues, Catalogues Raisonnées, etc., of the day are woefully burthened with.’ It is a cheap kind of humour at the best. To take two of the most deserving subjects—‘A Moving Effect; the Execution rapid,’ is represented by a runaway coach, with expressions of the utmost horror in the faces and attitudes of the occupants; ‘A Striking Effect, the handling by no means good or pleasant to the eye,’ is illustrated by a fracas between two returning roisterers and some night-watchmen. In these and in plate 2, a prison-scene depicting ‘An unpleasant effect, but the Keeping is Good,’ Alken shows genuine power as a draughtsman, and infuses his work with a character lacking elsewhere. The last plate, indeed, might almost be a coloured lithograph from the hand of Daumier. William Buckland is remembered as the first man to identify and name a dinosaur (although the name dinosaur had not yet been coined by Richard Owen). This was the megalosaur. Partly in response to the controversial works of Cuvier, Buckland wrote Reliquiae Diluvianae (1823) in which he argued that the evidence of geology alone demonstrated that a great flood had covered the entire globe. The books have been uniformly re-backed - attractively done in tan leather which is sympathetic to the original bindings, imitation bands to spines, black leather title pieces with gilt titles, gilt tooling to panel edges. All edges and endpapers marbled. All volumes contain their original silk ribbon page markers, some now detached. Corners rubbed, with boards exposed at corner tips.         Rosa muscosa / Rosier mousseux [Single Moss Rose 'Andrewsii']

      Paris 1824 - More than with any other painter, Redout?'s flowers are alive, and always shown at the ephemeral moment of their greatest beauty. Pierre-Joseph Redout? was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redout? went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Th??tre Italien. Redout? painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually to Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redout? came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redout? a full-time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redout?'s scientific understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redout?'s work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redout? brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Roses from which this work comes. Redout? together with Claude-Antoine Thory, an ardent botanist and collector of roses, have together in Les Roses produced a work not only of great artistic merit, but also an invaluable scientific record as well. `Redout? and Thory knew, described and figured almost all the important roses known in their day. Included were many of the key ancestors of our present-day roses. The plates in Les Roses have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared' (Gisele de la Roche). The roses used as specimens for the work were taken from the collections of Thory, the Malmaison gardens, and from other collections around Paris. Many of the flowers were novelties in Redout?'s time, and a number were dedicated to the memory of his friends and acquaintances, such as l'H?ritier de Brutelle and Ventenat. Cf.         THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT AND MODERN WINES.

      - London: Baldwin Craddock & Joy, 1824, 1st edition, 11 x 8¼ inches, 408 pages, folding table, 19th century full calf, 2 book-plates (H.R.Williams of Highgate and Marc & Ismini Fitch), neat pencil inscription on the verso of the fly-leaf, slight foxing, outer joints sound but some fragility, half-title page present but LACKING the first part-title page ("History of Ancient Wines"), which appears never to have been bound in as opposed to having been removed. NOTE 1: A part-title is similar to a half-title. The book is in three sections, History of Ancient Wines, History of Modern Wines, and Appendix. Each has its own part-title, which is simply the name of the section (e.g. "History of Ancient Wines") on the first side of the leaf with no other text and with the second side blank. In this copy, the first part-title page ("History of Ancient Wines") is not present. NOTE 2: Unusually, from the evidence of the book-plates and the inscription, it is possibile to trace a considerable part of the ownership history of this copy. The first book-plate is that of H.R.Williams, Oak Lodge, Highgate. This is most probably Henry Reader Williams (1822 - 97), a successful wine merchant who became a prominent local citizen and philanthropist in Highgate and Hornsey, and is known as "the father of Hornsey" (much more information online). A subsequent owner of this copy was Cecil Harold Ridge. The pencil insciption reads "Given to me in memory of my friend C. Harold Ridge, F.S.A. Hon. Editor of the British Record Society by his widow 1957. M.F." Cecil Harold Ridge was an author, archivist and editor (see online information). "M.F." are the initials of Marc Fitch, a historian and philanthropist, whose book-plate is the second in this copy. Marcus Felix Brudenell Fitch, CBE, DLitt, Hon FBA, FSA (1908 - 1994) "entered the family firm of Fitch Lovell, provision merchants; an occupation which made him wealthy. This enabled him to pursue his historical research interests. In 1956 he became the chair of the British Records Society, encouraging a greater rate of publication and contributing some publications himself.       Firmin Didot, Paris 1824 - A rare uncoloured impression from the first edition of 'Les Roses': Redouté's most famous work, and perhaps the most celebrated flower book of all time. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the most successful flower painter of all time, produced a work that was not only of great artistic merit, but also formed an invaluable scientific recordl. Redouté described and figured almost all the important roses known in his day, and included were many of the ancestors of today's roses. "The plates in 'Les Roses' have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared' (Gisele de la Roche). The roses used as specimens for the work were taken from the collections of Thory, the Malmaison gardens, and from other collections around Paris. Many of the flowers were novelties in Redouté's time, and a number were dedicated to the memory of his friends and acquaintances, such as l'Héritier de Brutelle and Ventenat. The plates of 'Les Roses' were executed by means of stipple engraving, a method ideally suited to render the nuances of tone found in Redouté's original water-colours. During a trip to London, he met the renowned engraver Francesco Bartolozzi and learned that the most successful impressions of stipple engravings came from well-used plates. Redouté's printers therefore struck a limited number of black plates to take the edge off the plate before printing in colours. This print was printed in black on ochre-tinted paper. The ochre tint has subsequently been removed to reveal Redouté's full mastery of the stipple-engraving technique that this image so effortlessly demonstrates. Cf. Cleveland Collections 807; cf. Heroult (1802-1853). Tätig war er in Paris, wo er 1846-1861 auf Ausstellungen seine Werke, meist Aquarelle, präsentierte. Um 1855 übte er in Bordeaux eine Lehrtätigkeit an der Academie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Bordeaux aus, wo zu seinen Schülern O. Redon (1840-1916) zählte. Das Museum von Bordeaux besitzt von ihm das große Ölgemälde "Abd-el-Kader's Einschiffung in Bordeaux".

        A General History and Collection of Voyages and Travels , arranged in systematic order: forming a complete history of the origin and progress of navigation, discovery, and commerce, by sea and land, from the earliest ages to the present time

      Edinburgh: William Blackwood, 1824. 18 volumes, octavo, with six folding maps, eleven other maps and a folding table of South Sea languages (this set also including five maps in duplicate for a total of 23); occasional inoffensive foxing; contemporary polished red calf, a few joints expertly repaired. Eighteen-volume collection. Handsome set of Robert Kerr's celebrated collection of voyage and travel narratives, including accounts of exploration from the early medieval era through to the Pacific voyages of Captain James Cook and his contemporaries. No less than six of the eighteen volumes are devoted to the three voyages of Cook, accompanied by a detailed and finely printed folding chart including the track of Cook's first voyage. A General History and Collection of Voyages and Travels was first issued in instalments between 1811 and 1816, with the final volume by William Stevenson published in 1824 after Kerr's death. This is the second and best edition with title-pages uniformly dated 1824 and three additional maps not included in the collation of the first edition, including detailed charts of Tahiti and the Hawaiian islands. The first volume commences with early Scandinavian exploration, including the discovery of Greenland and mainland North America by Icelanders of Norwegian descent before 1000 AD. It includes other medieval voyagers, including Sir John Mandeville, Marco Polo and Nicolo and Antonio Zeno and incorporates the accounts of Arabic and Jewish travellers to enrich the scope of the work. Subsequent volumes include the early discovery of India and Africa, Christopher Columbus and the conquistadors in the New World and travellers of the Middle East, Central Asia and China. Volumes eight and nine in the series comprise daring voyages commissioned by the East India Company in the early seventeenth-century and form a valuable historical resource. Volumes ten and eleven include circumnavigators from Magellan to Lord Anson, including journal entries from Schouten and Le Maire, William Dampier and George Shelvocke. British naval exploration of the eighteenth century, especially Cook's discoveries, take pride of place, indeed the preface boasts the collection 'is especially distinguished by a correct and full account of all Captain Cook's voyages'. The Pacific discovery narratives of Byron, Wallis and Carteret are included, as is an abstract of Bougainville's voyage of 1766-1769. The set concludes with William Stevenson's concise and scholarly history of exploration that includes indexes to the seventeen volumes of original narratives and a lengthy bibliography of voyages arranged by region, with sections on Polynesia and Australasia. This impressive set in an attractive contemporary binding is from the library of the Royal Cruising Club, and later from the collection of the novelist Hammond Innes, with his signed bookplate in each volume.

        Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the Years 1819-20-21-22

      London: John Murray, 1824. Two volumes, octavo, with four splendid folding maps; fine in contemporary navy half calf, marbled boards, edges and endpapers. Rumours of cannibalism and murder in the frozen North. Second edition, publishing the results of the 1819-1822 expedition to the polar north under the command of Sir John Franklin. Franklin's expedition was one of two simultaneously searching a route to the pole (the second was assigned to William Parry). Assured of guides and ongoing supplies by the Hudson's Bay Company, Franklin and his party of twenty men sought an overland route east of the Coppermine River. Using native canoes to traverse a vast landscape, relations among the men deteriorated as food and supplies dwindled. Cold, exposure and starvation took a harrowing toll as cannibalism and murder erupted amongst the voyagers. A total of nine men died. This account was initially published in a lavishly illustrated quarto edition. This second edition in smaller format features four splendidly engraved maps. Franklin later served as a Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land, where he clashed with the disciplinarian bureaucracy inherited from his predecessor George Arthur.

        The Dangerous Voyage Performed By Captain Bligh , with a part of the crew of His Majesty's Ship Bounty, in an open boat

      Dublin: R. Napper, 1824. Duodecimo, woodcut frontispiece, a few marks but an unusually fresh copy; original green cloth, text block neatly restored in binding. Chapbook account. Rare Dublin edition of this anonymous chapbook account of the Bounty mutiny and particularly Bligh's open boat voyage from the Pacific to Batavia via the Torres Strait. A version of this account is thought to have been first published in 1817, and each of the several different editions of this work is uncommon. Each of the different editions also appear to have been revised, meaning that none should be considered identical: this Napper edition, writes Du Rietz in the Kroepelien catalogue, is certainly a new and revised edition, not only because the entire appendix is omitted, but also because the 'compilation dealing with Bligh's voyage has been considerably extended'. Ferguson knew four copies in four great Australian collections: Mitchell, Dixson, the National Library of Australia, and the Ferguson collection itself.

        Robeing Royalty, a treat for the Sandwichers , at the sign of the Hog in Armour

      London: S. W. Fores, June 16, 1824. Etching with original handcolour, 235 x 330 mm.; in fine condition, in a recent archival mount, framed. Contemporary cartoon of the Hawaiian royals in London. Very rare caricature of the Hawaiian royal family, published during their visit to London in 1824. Kamehameha II, as the name has since become standardised, or Liholiho Iolani as he was also known, was the son of the famous Kamehameha the Great and reigned in Hawaii from 1819. From the earliest days of his reign there was enormous change in the traditional ways of life, and he is generally seen as having personally begun the unravelling of the kapu system. On 27 November 1823, five years after taking his throne, Kamehameha and Queen Kamamalu set sail for London aboard the English whaler L'Aigle. After arriving almost unnoticed, news of the Royal visitors quickly spread, and they were lavishly entertained and attracted great attention in London, helped by the regal bearing of the Queen who was six foot seven inches tall. They visited Westminster Abbey and attended the theatre in Drury Lane where, by royal command, they occupied the royal box. Tragically, everyone in Kamehameha's party came down with measles, for which the Hawaiians had no immunity. Queen Kamamalu died in London on 8 July 1824, a heartbroken Kamehameha a few days later. Their bodies were returned to Hawai'i for burial by HMS Blonde whose captain, George Byron, was a cousin of the poet. Although many contemporary depictions of the visit dwelt on the elegant deportment and sophistication of the Hawaiian entourage, there was another side to London's fascination with the Hawaiian royals, as this rare caricature attests. On the one hand, there were the graceful portraits; on the other a ruthless satire of their adoption of western dress. Both styles, of course, tend towards caricature, but such cartoons are a distinctive part of the rich visual history of their visit, and testament to the depth of public fascination with Hawaii and the South Seas.
