Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the Years 1819-20-21-22

John Murray, London 1824 - Two volumes, octavo, with four splendid folding maps; fine in contemporary navy half calf, marbled boards, edges and endpapers. Rumours of cannibalism and murder in the frozen North. Second edition, publishing the results of the 1819-1822 expedition to the polar north under the command of Sir John Franklin. Franklin's expedition was one of two simultaneously searching a route to the pole (the second was assigned to William Parry). Assured of guides and ongoing supplies by the Hudson's Bay Company, Franklin and his party of twenty men sought an overland route east of the Coppermine River. Using native canoes to traverse a vast landscape, relations among the men deteriorated as food and supplies dwindled. Cold, exposure and starvation took a harrowing toll as cannibalism and murder erupted amongst the voyagers. A total of nine men died. This account was initially published in a lavishly illustrated quarto edition. This second edition in smaller format features four splendidly engraved maps. Franklin later served as a Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land, where he clashed with the disciplinarian bureaucracy inherited from his predecessor George Arthur. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Jocko, Anecdote détachée des lettres inédites sur l'instinct des animaux

[J Tastu for ] P. Persan, Paris 1824 - Duodecimo, some foxing, localised stain affects the final leaf; good in contemporary quarter sheep with marbled boards. A beautiful friendship in a faraway land. First edition: a curious tale exploring the dual nature of humans and primates, rich in philosophical reflection and purportedly based upon scientific and voyage literature. Charles Pougens (1755-1833) was an indefatigable scholar and linguist whose promising diplomatic career was cut short when blinded by the pox at 24 years of age. Pougens continued as a man-of-letters and publisher who enjoyed close contact with luminaries and intellectuals of the era. Jocko is a fictional work, relating the experiences of a traveller who forms a friendship with a female orang-outang on an unnamed island in the New World. Similarities between human and orang-outang behaviour are explored, although the simian is presented as an innocent ultimately duped by human greed. The author's insatiable erudition is attested by the 84 pages of evidence that accompany the short story; every aspect of the tale is linked to scientific and voyage literature. A galaxy of scholars and travellers are enlisted in the cause, including naturalists such as Cuvier and Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire, philosophers, and a number of famous voyagers including Schouten, Dampier and Bergeron. These notes are followed by an equally impressive alphabetical list of authors cited. The list is bibliographically detailed (we learn, for instance, that Pougens consulted the 1711-1712 Amsterdam edition of Dampier issued in five volumes). The scholarly nature of Jocko did not diminish the popular appeal of the story; a second edition appeared the same year and theatrical adaptations attracted large audiences. A Favourite Poodle Hatching Poultry!! or A present of Feather Breeches from the Sandwich Isles

      J. Fairburn, June, London 1824 - Handcoloured engraving (240 x 340 mm.); faint creases from earlier folding, but a very bright copy. Kamehameha and Kamamalu an exotic tease for "Poodle" Byng. A wonderful and very rare British satirical print from the time of the royal visit to London by King Kamehameha II and Queen Kamamalu in 1824. The print was published in June of the same year: that is, at the very moment when enthusiasm for the Hawaiian visitors was at its peak, and before their melancholy death from measles in July. Cruikshank depicts three of the Royal party bedecked in feathered outfits, which is all the more ironic given that British society was agog at their sophistication, 'wearing coats by a London tailor, and stays and gowns by a Parisian modiste' (Byron, Voyage of H.M.S. Blonde). Here each of the three is muttering gibberish, no doubt fondly imagined by Cruikshank to be a droll imitation of the Hawaiian language. The joke is made at the expense of the Honourable Frederick Gerald "Poodle" Byng (1784-1871), a close friend of Beau Brummel, and a dandy known for his gaming debts. Byng was appointed to escort the Hawaiian party during their unexpected visit to London in 1824. He had light curly hair and was never seen in public without a poodle at his side, earning his nickname from Brummel: espying Byng and his poodle in a curricle, he is said to have greeted him 'how d'ye do, Byng? A family vehicle, I see'. As the Hawaiian king's other name "Liholiho" was thought to mean "dog of dog", Byng's appointment was considered most diverting to Regency wits. Byng, who has adopted a feathered skirt of his own, is pictured exclaiming: 'Egad these breeches are a valuable present - I'll turn 'em to account. Dash my Wig if I don't open a concern in opposition to the Steam & hatch Chickens by the Grose, in the Natural way, I shall then be able to supply your Sandwich Majesties, and other Majesties, Tables with the Real Poodle Poultry, of the finest flavour in the Universe'. A note lying discarded at his feet hints at his taste for gaming. It reads: 'Lost £500 at B-ks's. NB saw them all out, started at 5 in ye Morning'. The note probably refers to Brooks's, the Whig gentleman's club.

PIAZZA VITTORIO EMANUUELE IN TORINO PLACE VICTOR EMANUEL À TURIN

Typographia, Or the Printer's Instructor: Including an Account of the Origin of Printing, with Biographical Notices of the Printers of England, from Caxton to the close of the Sixteenth Century: A Series of Ancient and Modern Alphabets, and Domesday Characters: Together with an Elucidation of Every Subject Connected with the Art

, 1824. 1824. First edition. London, 1824. 2 vols. Hcloth. Orbds. (dustsoiled). (First pages of vol. I waterstained). Bigmore & Wyman: One of the few standard works on the art of printing in the English language, this is perhaps the most familiar... It abounds with information of a very useful character, spiced with conceits manifesting the originality, humour, and freshness of the author... The type, never larger than brevier, sometimes is as small as pearl... The second volume may be described as practical, in contradistinction to the first, which is historical. It gives a description of types, directions for composing, for press and warehouse work, &c. It is particularly rich in foreign alphabets, a feature which has gained for it great estimation. Altogether the volume is a congeries of practical miscellanies of the most interesting character. Whatever its defects and shortcomings, it has long since become, and deservedly, a printer's classic, and one in which the youngest apprentice as well as the most experienced journeyman finds matter of an amusing as well as useful nature.

C'est avec cette oeuvre qu'Edwards apparaît comme un précurseur de l'écologie. Il y rapporte ces expériences sur l'influence de l'air, de l'eau, de la lumière, de la chaleur et de l'électricité sur les organismes vivants. "Edwards devoted much time to the study of the influence of environmental factors on the "animal economy". His main idea was that vital processes depend on external physical and chemical forces but are not entirely controlled by them. Life is different from heat, light, or electricity, forces which, however, contribute to the production of vital phenomena. (.) Edward's book is a classic pioneer work on animal ecology." DSB, 5, 285. Coiffe supérieure rognée. Garrison-Morton 145.46, 598.1, 1991.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, 1824. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, 1824. First Edition. Half cloth. Good. First Edition. Half cloth. Two vols., 16mo (130 × 88 mm), pp. [14], xii, 610, [10, index]; [8], iv, 663, [1], [16, index &c.]; portrait frontispieces (Caxton and Johnson), engraved titles, half titles and Roxburghe Club dedication; book-plate of H. Duncan Keats to front pastedown of second volume; some spotting of initial and final leaves, light soiling to edges; in original publisher's cloth-backed boards, worn, with worn printed paper labels to spine, else good. First edition of Johnson's celebrated work in the original publisher's boards.'Of the few standard works on the art of printing in the English language, this is perhaps the most familiar. [The first volume contains] a table of the introduction of the art into the different countries after which comes the "Introduction and progess of the art in Great Britain", with a list of the productions of the first printers up to 1599. The second volume may be described as practical, in contradistinction to the first, which is historical. It gives a description of types, directions for composing, for press, and warehouse work, &c. It is particularly rich in foreign alphabets, a feature which has gained of it great estimation ... it has long since become, and deservedly, a printer's classic.' (Bigmore & Wyman, A bibliography of printing, I, pp. 371-72)John Johnson (1777-1848), born probably in Chester, worked for some time in the printing office of Thomas Bensley. He later complaining in 1824, the year of publication of the present work of 'cruel and unjust treatment', intimating that Chancery proceedings were still lingering. He circulated, in July 1818, the prospectus of a work on printing, and with the financial support of Edward Walmsley printed Typographia in 1824 at his office, the Apollo Press, Brooke Street, Holborn. The book appeared in four sizes, 32mo, 16mo, 8vo, and royal 8vo; the last known as the Roxburghe edition. Richard Thomson, librarian of the London Institution, helped in the historical part. An abridgment, with an appendix, was printed at Boston, 1828, 12mo. Johnson describes an improved composing case introduced by him (Typographia, II, 108-117), and advertised in the same volume a ‘typographic specimen,'; executed with brass rules and flowers. He was opposed to stereotype and machine presses. An engraved portrait of Johnson, by W. Harvey, is prefixed to the second volume, He died in Brooke Street, Holborn, 17 February 1848. (See DNB, 30, 20-21)Provenance: H. Duncan Keats, who worked at the St. Bride Foundation, was the author of Letterpress machine-room difficulties and the possibilities of lithography (London, St. Bride Foundation printing school, 1921).

The Pilot: A Tale of the Sea

London - John Miller, 1824. London - John Miller, 1824 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce early edition of The Pilot: A Tale of the Sea, a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in January 1824 (the earliest edition is actually dated 1823). Its subject is the life of a naval pilot during the American Revolution. In three volumes complete. The Pilot was Cooper's fourth novel and his first sea tale. A sailor by profession, Cooper had undertaken to surpass Walter Scott's Pirate (1821) in seamanship. James Fenimore Cooper (1789- 1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Before embarking on his career as a writer he served in the U. S. Navy as a Midshipman which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. Cooper is best remembered as a novelist who wrote numerous sea-stories and the historical novels known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among naval historians his works on early U. S. naval history have been widely received but were sometimes criticised by Cooper's contemporaries. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece. Cooper's work is read carefully by law and literature scholars such as Nan Goodman, who argues that several of Cooper's novels, particularly The Pioneers and The Pilot, demonstrate an early 19th century American preoccupation with prudence and negligence in a country where property rights were often still in dispute. Condition: In halfleather bindings. Externally, generally smartbut with slight wear to extremities, slight rubbing and marks to boards. Five hinges strained. Internally, generally firmly bound. Bright but withslightscattered foxing and handling marks. Overall: GOOD.

A particularly interesting and scarce copy of this first English translation of a wonderful story of a man with no shadow. First Edition, Second Issue. Chambers to front free-endpaper. Adelbert von Chamisso (January 30, 1781 August 21, 1838) was a German poet and botanist. He had become lieutenant in 1801, and in 1805 accompanied his regiment to Hameln, where he shared in the humiliation of its treasonable capitulation in the following year. He joined the circle of Madame de Stal, and followed her in her exile to Coppet in Switzerland, where, devoting himself to botanical research, he remained nearly two years. In 1812 he returned to Berlin, where he continued his scientific studies. In the summer of the eventful year, 1813, he wrote the prose narrative Peter Schlemihl, the man who sold his shadow. This, the most famous of all his works, has been translated into most European languages (English by William Howitt). It was written partly to divert his own thoughts and partly to amuse the children of his friend Julius Eduard Hitzig. In the story, Schlemihl sells his shadow to the Devil for a bottomless wallet, only to find that a man without a shadow is shunned by human society. The woman he loves rejects him, and he spends the rest of his life wandering the world in scientific exploration. Condition: Rebacked in calf with original boards. Externally very sound, smart spine, older leather rubbed with loss. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generallyclean aside from occasional instances of light scattered foxing, and off-setting from the plates. Ink annotation to verso of front free-endpaper. The half-title is missing, as is common. Overall: VERY GOOD.
