Draft of a Letter to the Catholic Association in Bentham's Hand.

1824. Draft of an Unsent Letter by Jeremy Bentham [Bentham, Jeremy (1748-1832)]. [Draft of a Letter to the Catholic Association in Bentham's Hand]. [London]: December 9, 1824. 12-1/2" x 8" leaf removed from ledger (or notebook), ruled in red, more than 60 lines of text in ink with extensive editing, cross-outs and amendments. Autograph note by John Bowring at head of leaf reading: "JB to the Catholic Association Not sent", 9 December 1824. Fold lines, light toning. * The text begins, as amended: "For the Catholic Rents. After the example set by The Examiner. Five pound from Jeremy Bentham in the humble and cordial wish that his oppressed brethren of the Catholic persuasion will neither retaliate persecution by persecution, nor attempt redress by insurrection, but unite with the liberal among Protestants for the attainment of security for all, against depredation and oppression in every shape, by the only practicable means - Parliamentary reform, in the radical and solely efficient mode .....". This is followed by a long section, amounting to more than half the text, that is crossed out (but legible). The note by Bowring isn't entirely accurate. This letter was sent, but it did not contain the deleted text in the present manuscript draft. In his edition of Bentham's correspondence, Bowring noted at the end of his transcription that he had persuaded Bentham to suppress the text deleted. However, Bowring retained a copy of it and it is printed in full in The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham (2006) 12:73. The Catholic Association, formed by Daniel O'Connell (himself a close friend of Bentham), collected money, known as the Catholic Rent, to defray the costs of publishing and petitioning for the removal of the political disabilities imposed on Roman Catholics. Bentham's contribution of ?5 was noted in the issue of The Examiner for 26 December 1824. The Examiner was a weekly newspaper found by Leigh and John Hunt in 1808 and for some years was a leading intellectual journal promoting radical principles. Bowring [1792-1872] was Bentham's executor and editor. Also a notable political economist and linguist, he was the fourth Governor of Hong Kong.

Bell'esemplare a pieni margini (29,3 x 22 cm), minime fioriture. Einaudi 1562. Kress, Italian, 865. Fornari M. 674 - 683 e 689 - 703.         A Suit of Armour for Youth.

Published by the Proprietor 1824 - FIRST EDITION, with an engraved frontispiece and 11 engraved plates each with a flap, 1 of the flaps re-attached, some offsetting, pp. xii, 12mo, contemporary calf, gilt roll tooled borders on sides, spine gilt, rebacked (a little crudely), corners worn, contemporary ownership inscription on title of Jane Janvrin and inscription by her on fly-leaf presenting the volume to her brother Francis, sound. A handbook of moral precepts in the form of an allegorical description of knightly armour. The 11 engravings, by Cosmo Armstrong and B.L. Wright are of different pieces of equipment, which may be lifted up to uncover a depiction of the ideal character trait the piece symbolises. The plates are accompanied by a text that is inspirational but imparts much curious historical information, including references to pieces in Grimaldi's own collection. The flaps have short extensions which go through a slit in the plate, which are then pasted down on the verso. The one flap which is re-attached is simply pasted to the recto, its little extension still adhering to the verso.         Letters From North America Written During a Tour In the United States And Canada

London: Hurst, Robinson, & Co.and A. Constable & Co., 1824. First Edition. Both volumes of this two volume set are in very good+ condition in 3/4 leather (calf) and marbled paper covered boards with gilt text and rules on the spines. Both volumes are octavos measuring 8 1/2" by 5 1/8" with rubbing and light wear to the leather around the tips of the boards, at the head and heel of the spines and at the joints. Volume I contains a preface followed by 405 pages which includes an errata on page 405. It is illustrated with a frontispiece map. Volume II contains a fold-out, frontispiece map, 459 pages followed by a tipped-in errata and is illustrated with the aforementioned frontispiece and several engravings of Native American implements and ornaments on pages 442 and 443. With the exception of offsetting from the frontispieces and engravings there is no foxing or tanning present within these two volumes. This is the more complete and revised edition of Hodgson's letters. The earlier version was printed in New York in 1823 and strips much from its content. The author spent eight months traveling through out the eastern states of the US. In the process he wrote 44 letters which are published in these volumes. He arrived in New York City and traveled to Washington DC, Richmond, Norfolk, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Lumberton, Charleston, Savannah, Augusta, Mobile, New Orleans, Natchez, Greenville, Huntsville, Lookout Mountain, Knoxville, visited Jefferson at Monticello, Baltimore, parts of New England and Philadelphia. His main areas of interest were slavery, which he abhorred, and Indian culture, where he had a great interest. Howes considers this set as "quite scarce" and provides "Unbiased observations."         Rosa Damascena Variegata. Rosier d'York et de Lancastre

[Paris: Firmin Didot], 1824. Stipple engraving printed in black, on ochre-tinted paper, by Bessin, after Redouté, printed by Rémond. Very good condition. A very rare uncoloured 'connoisseur's' impression on ochre-tinted paper from the first edition of 'Les Roses': Redouté's most famous work, and perhaps the most celebrated flower book of all time The present uncoloured plate was printed on ochre paper as it was realized that this gave a pleasing effect. The ochre background enhances the subtle gradations of tone achieved using the stipple engraving technique and gives a unique opportunity to appreciate the unrivalled artistry of both Pierre-Joseph Redouté himself and the master-craftsman he employed to translate his watercolour into a print of the highest quality. Redouté learned, whilst on a visit to London, that the most successful impressions of stipple engravings came from well-used plates. A number of black plates would thus be struck to take the edge off the plate before printing in colours. Redouté's printers struck black impressions - always on a paper with a distinct ochre tint - from the plates, and these early impressions were then combined with later colour-printed examples to form the de luxe issues of 'Les Roses'. Redouté's 'Les Roses' was issued in four formats: a large paper folio with coloured plates, a large paper folio with the plates in two states, folio with coloured plates, and folio with the plates in two states (the present plate comes from this final de luxe form). Gavin Bridson and Donald Wendel, in their magisterial 'Printmaking in the service of botany' catalogue (Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, 1986, item 25) noted that Redouté 'For the interest of connoisseurs' included `a set of black plates as a parallel series to the usual color-printed versions' in 'special issues' of both the present work and his earlier 'Les Liliacées'. The number of these special issues that were produced is unfortunately not recorded but to judge from auction records over the past twenty-five years they are extremely rare: only four complete sets of 'Les Roses' in this format are recorded. The present print therefore comes from an edition that was severely limited, and is certainly much rarer than its colour-printed equivalent. Cf. Cleveland Collections 807; cf. Dunthorne 232; cf. Hunt Redoutéana 19; cf. Hunt, Printmaking in the Service of Botany 25; cf. Nissen BBI 1599; cf. Pritzel 7455; cf. Ray French 89; cf. Stafleu and Cowan 8748.

Remember Me! A New Years Gift or Christmas Present, 1825.

      - London: I. Poole, [1824]. Small 8vo, xxiv, 372 pp. With an engraved frontispiece, 4 full-page engravings including one by Blake, 8 hand-colored botanical plates, 8 plates of engraved music, and a calendar with an engraved title-page and 6 plates. Publisher's de luxe original full brown polished calf, covers panelled in gilt, backstrip richly gilt-panelled with the binder's name at the foot of the spine "Purgold", slightly worn, occasional small spots on plates as usual, a very good copy of the de luxe issue. First edition of one of the rarest of all of the plates designed and engraved by Blake. The title exists in three states: dated 1825, dated 1826, and with the date on the title removed -- only one other copy thus is known. Three copies in all have been sold in the last 30 years: Sotheby's Belgravia, 3 Feb. 1976, lot 3, Sotheby's London, 6 June 1991, lot 97, and a copy sold privately by Maggs Bros. to Robert N. Essick replacing this copy from Essick purchased at the 1976 sale. The plate, titled 'The Hiding of Moses' was the last plate designed and engraved by Blake himself for a commercial publication; the original drawing 'Moses placed in the Ark of Bulrushes', which closely echoes a tempera now untraced that was executed some 25 years earlier, is in the Huntington Library. BB #490A. Easson and Essick, William Blake Book Illustrator, XI (recording the Rosenwald proof and 3 copies). Bentley (in the U of T Quarterly 2011) noted: "The gift book Remember Me! with Blake's wonderful engraving of the 'Hiding of Moses' was more remarkable for its decorations than for its literary contents. Of the twenty-four copies recorded, each differs from the others in the pattern of binding, colour of fore-edges, endpapers, and the decorated sleeve-case. Despite this varied elegance, the work had only a modest sale, and the same sheets were re-issued in 1825 for the 1826 gift-giving season. This paucity of sales may be related to the fact that the publisher John Poole had little experience of book distribution. His speciality was as a maker of Marble Paper and Fancy Pocket-Books, not in selling them." [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Manuscript Order of Transportation Signed by King George IV, "Warrant for the removal of male convicts under Sentence of Transportation"

London:. May 18, 1824.. Very good condition. An original manuscript "Warrant for the removal of male convicts under Sentence of Transportation", dated 18 May 1824, and signed strongly at the head " George R". It lists 66 convicts, the majority of whom were transported to Australia. The convicts are listed along the left margin of the order, organized by the court where they were tried, i.e.. Nottingham, Lancaster, the Old Bailey and York. The ship destinations were equally divided between New South Wales & Van Diemen's Land. Trove records only one other original manuscript Warrant, dated April 17, 1824, held at the National Library, Rex Nan Kivell Collection NK626. Astoundingly, the convicts were held on hulks in the River Medway, sometimes for years. While some ship departed as early as 1824, others left in 1836, and seemingly, one F. H. Germaine, who had a 10 year sentence, was held on the hulks for 18 years, being transported in 1842. 15 convicts were shipped on the Minerva in July of 1824. Other ships include the Sir Charles Forbes (7); Lady East (6); Medina (5); Medway (3); Lady Nugent (2); England (2); and 1 each on board the Mangles, William Metcalf, Elphinstone, Manlius, Triton, Marquis of Huntley, Hooghley, Woodman, Norfolk and Guildford. The destination(s) of the remaining 15 prisoner names was not determined. The Minerva sailed from London in July of 1824 with 172 convicts on board, under the command of Captain John Bell, with Surgeon Superintendent Alexander Nisbet on his first appointment to a convict ship. On board there was a guard consisting of Major Tobias Kirkwood, Quarter Master Francis Hales and 43 men of the 40th regiment, and 5 passengers. Surgeon Nisbet kept a medical journal, in which he expresses his concerns over prisoners' sickness: "I suspect that it lay in the ship herself, she having taken out her convicts unhealthy for the two previous voyages ... I tried to remove whatever might be the cause of diseases by the most unremitting attention and supporting their spirits by every indulgence in my power. By attention to cleanliness and encouraging amusements, having provided myself with musical instruments there were occasional dances of an evening in which all took great pleasure." (Held at the National Archives, Kew). After a journey of 128 days the Minerva arrived in Port Jackson in November 1824. Two prisoners had died on the passage out; a muster was held by the Colonial Secretary Frederick Goulburn on the 22nd November 1824. The prisoners appeared to be in good health and stated they were well treated; however 16 men were sent on to the hospital in Sydney. [see jenwilletts dot com]. The prisoners held at Nottingham include, followed by the ship they were transported on and the date: George Henry Fowler (Minerva, July 1824), Henry Green (Lady East, November 1824), John Cooper (Mangles, July 1824), William Bonnington (Minerva, July 1824), William Markham (Medina, April 1825), Daniel Boswell (Minerva, July 1824), William Hayes (Minerva, July 1824), Benjamin Preston, John Witherbed and Richard Bosnell (Minerva, July 1824). The Lancaster list includes: John Atkinson (Minerva, July 1824), John Walmsley (Minerva, July 1824), John Arnold, William Walker (Medway, July 1825), William Smart (Minerva, July 1824), Robert Clegg (Medina, April 1825), Joseph Ramsbottom (Minerva, July 1824), George Partington (Medina, April 1825), George Jones (Lady East, November 1824), John Hordern (Sir Charles Forbes, November 1824), George Griffiths (Lady East, November 1824), Richard Marsden (Lady Nugent, December 1834), James Timperley, George Thompson (Sir Charles Forbes, November 1824), John Child, Paul Hesketh, John Hatton (England, March 1832, James Buckley (Minerva, July 1824), Peter Williamson (Sir Charles Forbes, November 1824), John Smith (William Metcalf, May 1834), Samuel Thornton (Medina, April 1825), W. H. Topping (Sir Charles Forbes, November 1824), John Moorby (Elphinstone, January 1836), William Thornton, Thomas Lynett, John McFarlane (Medway, July 1825), Jos.h Irving (Manlius, April 1827), John Johnston, William Garguin, and Peter Cunningham (Lady Nugent, July 1836). The Old Bailey prisoner list includes: F. H. Germaine (Triton, August 1842), John Bass (Marquis of Huntley May 1826), John Hutchins (Medina, April 1825), Richard Stagg (Hooghley, July 1834; or Bengal Merchant, August 1836), William Sykes (Minerva, 08 July 1824), Samuel Briggs (sentenced to death 1824, not transported), Joseph Thompson (Lady East, November 1824), William Thompson (Woodman, December 1825), James Thompson (Norfolk, May 1829), John A. The York prisoner list includes: Thomas Hunley Taylor, Als Thomas Hunley. 4pp, 8 x 12 1/2". Written on 2 sides, with the title of the warrant on the verso. A closed split at the center fold; short splits at contemporary horizontal folds, with no loss. In very good condition overall. On watermarked laid paper, with a crest at one side and "Weatherley 1823" on the other. Research for much of the above was obtained from the very fine site convictrecords.com.au, which is made possible by the State Library of Queensland. A remarkable and rare survival of Australia's convict history, signed by the King of England.

        Rosa Rosenbergiana. Rosier de Rosenberg

[Paris: Firmin Didot], 1824. Stipple engraving printed in black, on ochre-tinted paper, by Langlois, after Redouté, printed by Rémond. La Decouverte des Sources du Mississippi et de la Riviere Sanglante. Description Du Cours entier du Mississippi .

Benj. Levy, New Orleans 1824 - (8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches). [8],327,[1]pp. Errata slip. Uncut. Original blue paper-covered boards, expertly rebacked to style, paper spine label. The rare first edition of this Italian explorer's adventures in America. "[Beltrami] found his way to the upper reaches of the Mississippi River, where he joined an expedition led by Maj. Stephen Long. The latter wrote of him, 'an Italian whom we met at Fort St. Anthony, attached himself to the expedition and accompanied us to Pembina.' Beltrami subsequently traveled down the Mississippi to New Orleans" (Wagner-Camp). "He undertook a hazardous and lonely journey in his search for the sources of the Mississippi and other rivers, in which he claimed success" (Clark). An expanded English translation was printed in London in 1828, and included a folding map illustrating the routes travelled in America, detailing Beltrami's view of the geography of the headwaters of the Mississippi. The inclusion of the map in the later edition was in response to the criticism the author received for not providing a map in this, the first edition of the work. However, the present first edition, in French, is considerably more rare. Wagner-Camp 26a:1; Jumonville 417; Field 110; Howes B338, "aa"; Buck 181; Leclerc 135; Clark Ii:182; Monaghan 178a; Pilling, Proof-Sheets 340; Sabin 4604; Rosenbach, American Jewish 255.
