Edition originale rare. ¶ Cf. Picavet Les Idéologues, p. 517. - Quérard Fr. litt. II. 423. (n'a pas vu la première édition).

"Through the long arctic winter, Parry did everything possible to keep his crew occupied. There was constant activity, plays were acted at the 'Royal Arctic Theatre' and Sabine edited a periodical journal, The North Georgia Gazette, and Winter Chronicle" . This periodical was afterwards published by John Murray, and is bound in with this journal. ON THE FIRST VOYAGE Parry was given command of the Hecla and Griper for his first expedition of 1819. Parry sailed up Baffin Bay and through Lancaster Sound and Barrow Strait to the south side of Melville Island, encountering much less heavy ice than anticipated. The expedition over-wintered at Winter Harbour, on the south side of Melville Island. Freeze-up delayed Parry until August of 1820, but he was still able to continue west to Dundas Peninsula and south to Banks Island before turning to head home to England. Parry's voyage was to be recognized as one of the most important in the history of Arctic exploration: he proved that Lancaster Sound opened a passage to the west, he charted a vast area of the unknown Arctic, and proved that it was possible to spend the winter north of the Arctic Circle without being in grave danger. He was also the first to reach 110 degrees west longitude, which earned him and his crew a cash reward of £5,000. [AB 13145]. The Journal, based on Parry's reports, appeared in 1821, after the rights had been bought by the publisher John Murray for the stunning amount of a 1000 guineas. In the same year this second, corrected, edition was published, followed by German, Dutch and French translations. ON THE SECOND VOYAGE " Sent by the Admiralty to search for a passage along the west coast of Foxe Basin, Parry sailed north of Southampton Island instead of south, the route preferred by previous navigators, and thus became the first to sail through Frozen Strait and confirmed Middleton's discovery of Repulse Bay. In late Aug. having found no passage through Repulse Bay, he explored the coast northward, sailing as far as Ross Bay. In Feb. 1822, Eskimos visited the ships' winter quarters on Winter Island and spent much of the winter in the expedition's company, enabling Parry and his men to make detailed observations on their customs and language. After leaving their winter quarters, they explored farther north equipped with Eskimo maps (ESKIMAUX CHART No 1, No 2 & No 3, facing p. 197, 198 and 252) and found the entrance to Fury and Hecla Strait. Ice prevented their passing through it, but overland journeys confirmed that it led westward to a sea. Parry returned to winter quarters and attempted to sail through Fury and Hecla Strait the following summer. Unsuccessful in this attempt, and fearing scurvy, he then returned home. Sabin 58864.         Rosa Gallica Pontiana

[Paris: Firmin Didot], 1824. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, engraved by Langlois. Trimmed within platemark top and sides, not affecting image or titles. More than with any other painter, Redouté's flowers are alive, and always shown at the ephemeral moment of their greatest beauty. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre Italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually to Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full-time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's scientific understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Roses from which this work comes. Redouté together with Claude-Antoine Thory, an ardent botanist and collector of roses, have together in Les Roses produced a work not only of great artistic merit, but also an invaluable scientific record as well. `Redouté and Thory knew, described and figured almost all the important roses known in their day. Included were many of the key ancestors of our present-day roses. The plates in Les Roses have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared' (Gisele de la Roche). The roses used as specimens for the work were taken from the collections of Thory, the Malmaison gardens, and from other collections around Paris. Many of the flowers were novelties in Redouté's time, and a number were dedicated to the memory of his friends and acquaintances, such as l'Héritier de Brutelle and Ventenat. Cf.         The National Sports of Great Britain ... With descriptions in English and French ... Chasse et Amusemens Nationaux de la Grande Bretagne

London: printed for Thomas M'lean by Howlett & Brimmer, 1824. Folio. (18 3/4 x 12 1/4 inches). Parallel titles and text in English and French, text leaves with numerical signatures from 1-50. Hand-coloured engraved additional title, 50 hand-coloured aquatint plates by I. Clark after Henry Alken. (Final two plates and text leaves with minor paper loss to blank margins). Contemporary black straight-grained morocco, the covers elaborately panelled in gilt, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second compartment, the others with elaborate repeat pattern built up from small tools, gilt turn ins, cream-glazed endpapers, red morocco inner hinges, gilt edges A fine copy of "Alken's most important work ... It must always form the cornerstone of any Alken collection" (Tooley). The plates and text between them offer a thorough survey of the sports practised in Great Britain in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. The subjects covered including riding, fox, stag and otter hunting, beagling, racing, falconry, various types of dogs and horses, shooting grouse, partridge, pheasant, snipe, wild-fowl, bittern, pigeon, fishing for pike, and salmon, fishing from a punt, prize-fighting, cock-fighting, badger, bear, and bull-baiting and perhaps most extraordinary of all: "owling." It is interesting to note that although both the artist and the author felt that it was necessary to record badger, bear and bull baiting they did not hold back from condemning all three sports as barbaric. This copy is a later issue. The additional title is dated 1821 (rather than 1820, as in the first issue), a letterpress title in French has been added (only the English title is present in the first and second issues) and the explanatory text leaves are signed consecutively from 1 to 50 (Podeschi records an intermediate state/issue where only some of the text leaves are numbered). The watermarks suggest a date of circa 1824. The plates, very carefully hand-coloured, are all aquatints by I. Clark, and retain all of the liveliness that is such a feature of this work. The artist Henry Thomas Alken was born into what became a sporting artistic dynasty. He studied under the miniature painter J.T. Barber and exhibited his first picture (a miniature portrait) at the Royal Academy when he was sixteen. From about 1816 onwards he "produced paintings, drawings and engravings of every type of field and other sporting activity. He is best remembered for his hunting prints, many of which he engraved himself until the late 1830s ... To many, sporting art is 'Alken', and to describe his work or ability is quite unnecessary" (Charles Lane British Racing Prints pp.75-76). Litchfield 14; cf. Mellon/Podeschi 111; cf. Schwerdt I, p.19 & IV, p.4; Tooley 42.

A Picturesque Tour Along the River Ganges and Jumna, in India consisting of twenty-four highly finished and coloured views, a map and vignettes, from original drawings made on the spot, with illustrations historical and descriptive

London: L. Harrison for Rudolph Ackermann, 1824. Large quarto. (13 1/4 x 11 inches). Title with hand-coloured aquatint vignette, 1 folding uncoloured engraved map, 24 hand-coloured aquatint plates after Forrest by G. Hunt (5), Thomas Sutherland (19), 1 hand-coloured aquatint tail-piece. Expertly bound to style in red straight-grained morocco, the covers panelled in gilt using fillets and a neo-classical roll, the spine in six compartments with double raised bands, the bands highlighted with a dot roll, the space between with a decorative roll, lettered in the second compartment, the others with elaborate repeat decoration in gilt, gilt edges A lovely, large copy of one of the great books on the Indian sub-continent: "a just portrait of the enchanting features of India, eternally glowing in the brilliant glory of the resplendent Asiatic sun"(preface). This important book ranks alongside the works of William Hodges, the Daniells and Henry Salt as one of the cornerstone pictorial works on India. Printed in up to three colours and then delicately hand-coloured, the plates capture the bewitching play of light that so exemplifies Indian scenery. The subjects depicted were all recorded by Forrest during his service as an officer in the army. He was posted in Bengal from 1802 with the 3rd Regiment of Foot, and in the course of his duties made numerous journeys by boat, palanquin or on horseback. The work begins with an overview of Indian history, and his account of his principal journey starts on page 12, describing a tour made by Forrest starting in December 1807. He set out with six companions, 200 servants and followers and a guard of 40 native troops, following the routes of the rivers up from Calcutta to Delhi. Like the various tributaries encountered en route, Forrest made numerous detours to places of interest. All of these are recorded, both in the text and in the plates, with a sensitivity which clearly suggests Forrest's affinity for the country. With a fine sense of the dramatic, he saves his visit to the Taj Mahal for the concluding chapter: "The object which now calls our attention is last in order, but of the highest beauty and interest of any structure yet raised and perfected by man in any region of the earth ... The main part of this splendid edifice has fortunately been respected by all the invaders of Hindoostan, its great beauty being probably its protection. It is as pure and perfect as the day it was finished; and with common care, in the equal climate in which it is situated, it may last for centuries" (pp.190-191). Following his tour, Forrest served as aide-de-camp to his father-in-law, General William St. Leger, then commander-in-chief of the Upper Provinces of India, from about 1808 until 1811. He subsequently served in the Peninsula War, in the expedition against New Orleans in 1814-1815, then in Ireland, and finally as aide-de-camp to the Earl of Dalhousie, governor general of Canada, from 1820 to 1823. Returning to Britain, he died in Bath in March 1827. A contemporary review of the work summarizes its appeal: "The Tour along the River Ganges and Jumna, now completed, is one of those splendid works with which Mr. Ackermann, with great enterprise, liberality, and good taste, favours the public. There are few publishers who would run the hazard of producing them, at an expence that must be enormous ... The work contains twenty-four views, for the fidelity of which the author appeals with confidence to those who have passed through the same scenes. The drawings were all attentively copied from nature, and in many instances coloured on the spot, and always while the magic effects of the scenes represented were still impressed on the mental vision on the author and artist ... The views are of very varied description, including Hindoo pagodas, villages, ancient cities, mountains, forts, palaces, tombs, etc. with the adjacent scenery. There is a great deal of freedom and spirit in the drawings which are exquisitely and delicately coloured, exhibiting a scenery of such peculiar richness and beauty, as can only be appreciated, in its fullest extent, by those who have seen the spots they so well represent ... No description of ours will do justice to these beautiful engravings" (The Literary Chronicle, 8 January 1825). Abbey Travel 441; Martin Hardie p. 109-10, 313; Prideaux pp. 248,336,376; Tooley 227; Bobins 244.

Edinburgh, From the Top of Princes Street

London: Published by R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 1824. Hand-coloured aquatint. Very good condition apart from a skillfully repaired 3/4" tear in the right margin, a few tiny pinholes at the corners of the sheet, and some light soiling in the margins. Trimmed to within platemark on all sides. A scenic view of Scotland's capital as seen from the city's main thoroughfare, from a set of four prints of Edinburgh. The ancient city of Edinburgh on the east coast of Scotland has a long and eventful history that dates back to the Bronze Age. Perched on top of an elevated volcanic rock, its impressive castle is the city's focal point and was built by King Malcolm III Canmore in the eleventh century. By the late sixteenth century, Edinburgh was a thriving city and was established as the capital Scotland and the chief site of the royal court. Although no longer the royal seat when James VI of Scotland ascended to the English throne in 1603, effectively uniting the crowns of Scotland and England, it retained its own Parliament for many years. The city continued to prosper during the Enlightenment, although its Parliament ceased to exist when the Act of Union was instituted in 1707. During this period, Edinburgh underwent a significant architectural expansion, and the beautiful Georgian buildings, which characterize the city, were erected. Born in Devon, John Gendall moved to London in 1811 at the behest of Sir John Soane, who introduced him to the prolific print-publisher and bookseller Rudolph Ackermann. He worked for Ackermann for several years, conducting various experiments in the art of lithography and contributing numerous illustrations to the firm's various publications and topographical series. A number of his sketches and watercolour drawings were engraved and published as aquatints by the draughtsman Thomas Sutherland. Gendall continued to paint landscapes (mostly of Devonshire) after leaving Ackermann's employment, and he regularly exhibited his works at the Royal Academy until 1863. Cf. Benezit, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs , Vol. 13, p. 375; cf. Dictionary of National Biography.

S.A. Steiner und Comp: [PNs 4519-4545] [1824], Wien - First Edition. WeV C.10. Jähns 291. Hoboken 15, 361. Hirsch IV, 1290.First performed in Vienna, October 25, 1823. "Designated. as a ‘grosse romantische Oper’, the work combines the defining attribute of ‘grand opera’ as Weber understood it, the technique of through- composition, with various attributes of the newer ‘romantic’ opera such as a medieval setting with a supernatural component and a high degree of structural and genre variety. Although seriously flawed in certain respects, Helmina von Chézy’s libretto nevertheless allowed Weber to realize ideals of organic wholeness. even more thoroughly than in Der Freischütz. Slow, chromatic, and seemingly aimless music for divisi muted violins and violas characterizes the ethereal but restless existence of a spirit condemned to eternal wandering; with Emma’s redemption at the end of the opera, however, this music is transformed into a diatonic form. Where dialogue separates the formal pieces, Weber composed a flexible, expressive type of accompanied recitative that has little in common melodically or harmonically with conventional approaches to recitative." Paul Corneilson et al in Grove Music Online Oblong folio. Half contemporary dark green leather with green textured paper boards, diamond-shaped leather title label gilt to upper, gilt rules to spine. 1f.         A Flora of North America. Illustrated by coloured figures, drawn from nature

Philadelphia: vol.I: M. Carey & Sons; vol.II & III: H.C. Carey & I. Lea, 1824. 3 volumes, quarto. (10 9/16 x 8 5/16 inches). Half-titles in each volume. To Subscribers leaf in vol.II. 106 hand-coloured engraved plates (two folding), including some partially printed in colours and finished by hand, from drawings by the author, by Cornelius Tiebout (29), G.B. Ellis (32), F. Kearney (23), J. Boyd (7), J. Drayton (6), C. Goodman (6), Jacob J. Plocher (2) and J.L. Frederick (1). (one folding plate partially backed along fold). Contemporary three quarter calf and marbled boards, spines gilt. An important American flora, "magnificently illustrated" (DAB) with "Plates [that] are clear, soft and lovely" (Bennett). The work includes the first successful use of stipple-engraving in the United States. This set includes the rare 'To Subscribers' leaf in Volume II. In addition to its significance as a botanical work, Barton's Flora is also one of the most important early colour-plate books entirely produced in the United States. "The plates were made by [amongst others] Cornelius Tiebout, the first skilled engraver born in the United States, although he trained in London for two years in the 1790's to perfect his technique." (Reese, Stamped with a National Character p. 40). Barton states in the advertisement to the first volume that some of the "plates are printed in colour, and are afterwards coloured by hand. It is confidently believed by the author, that they will be found the most successful attempts at imitation by sound engraving, of the French style, yet made in this country." He goes on to note that the method of colour printing was the result of "repeated experiments" owing "to the impossibility of obtaining information as to the manner of colouring abroad." The text gives details of each species, its Latin binomial, common name, and class and order according to the Linnaean system, followed by interesting information about the history of the discovery of the species and details about its geographical range.       Charleston, S.C., 1824. Late 19th-century three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spines gilt, t.e.g. Lightly edgeworn, worn along the joints. Large bookplate on front pastedown of both volumes. Upper outer corner of leaf with pp.77-78 in first volume and leaf with pp.73-74 in second volume torn away, but not affecting text. Quite clean internally. Very good. An important contribution to American botany, and one of the first major botanical works to treat the American South. Elliott was a member of one of the most prominent families in South Carolina. After his graduation from Yale in 1791, he served as a legislator and ran the state bank, but devoted much of his time to his botanical pursuits. This work was originally published in thirteen parts, the first appearing in 1816, which accounts for the eccentric pagination of the first volume. A rare and significant work of American natural history.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Laromiguière, E.B. de Condillac, and John Locke. He was soon impressed also by the Common Sense school in Scottish philosophy and by François Maine de Biran and Pierre-Paul Royer-Collard, whose assistant he later became. After teaching briefly at the École Normale, Cousin travelled in Germany (1817?18), where he met and was influenced by G.W.F. Hegel and Friedrich Schelling. In 1820, after antiliberal political feeling grew in France, Cousin was deprived of his assistantship, and the École Normale was closed in 1822. He then went to Germany, where for six months he was imprisoned (1824?25) on a political charge still not identified. In the early 1820s he wrote Fragments philosophiques (1826), completed editions of the works of the Greek Neoplatonic philosopher Proclus and of René Descartes, and began his translation of the works of Plato.Reinstated at the reopened École Normale (1826) in 1828, Cousin lectured on philosophy and won unprecedented popularity. For the next 20 years he dominated the field in France. He became a member of the council of public instruction (1830), of the Académie Française (1831), and of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques (1832). In 1832 he was named a peer of France and two years later was made a director of the École Normale. After a visit to Germany to study educational methods, he drafted the bill (presented by the statesman François Guizot in 1833) that brought about landmark reforms in French primary education. When Guizot became prime minister in 1840, Cousin was appointed minister of public instruction.('Cousin launched the modern French Descartes revival with his enthousiastic but hasty edition of the philosopher's work, which served by nearly 80 years' (Greogor Sebba. (in erster [deutscher] Ausgabe). ? Jahrhunderts.? (A. Weibel, in: HLS). ?

Innen vereinzelte Stockflecken. In Bd.6, 10 Seiten gelockert. Biographien, Enzyklopädien, Kulturgeschichte, Lexikon, Nachschlagewerk

A Picturesque Tour along the Rivers Ganges and Jumna, in India:

London, R. Ackermann,, 1824. consisting of Twenty-four Highly Finished and Coloured Views, a Map, and Vignettes, from Original Drawings made on the Spot; with Illustrations, Historical and Descriptive. Quarto (332 × 264 mm). Recent red full morocco Cosway-style binding by Bayntun, with a miniature painting (under glass) set into the front cover, showing the Taj Mahal in the center of the panel, surrounded by eight smaller paintings of Indian historic sites, the space between the ovals in-filled with minute gilt floral motifs, richly gilt spine, single-line gilt border on sides enclosing gilt panel with ornamental corners, all edges gilt, richly gilt turn-ins, red watered silk endleaves, preserved in a custom made fleece-lined red cloth slipcase. With folding engraved map as a frontispiece, 24 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates by Hunt or Sutherland after Forrest, title page and last leaf each with a hand-coloured aquatint vignette. Watermarks: plates 1825; text 1821 & 1824. Embossed library stamp of Donald Duncan MacDermid on a preliminary blank. Occasional light offsetting from letterpress to plate (and vice versa). First edition of one of the finest colour plate books on India, originally issued in 6 monthly numbers. "The illustrations are clear and bright, finely engraved, frequently printed in two colours, and well finished by hand … they are a brave attempt to express what the author in the glittering and oriental peroration to his preface describes as 'the enchanting features of India, eternally glowing in the brilliant glory of the resplendent Asiatic sun'" (Martin Hardie). They are also eulogised in Mildred Archer and Ronald Lightbown's India Observed: India as viewed by British Artists 1760-1860 (V&A 1982): "Beautiful in themselves, they also mark an evolution from earlier aquatints, whose subjects sparkle under an eternal sunlight, in showing at times an evening light or stormy skies. This moodiness of landscape is of course very much in Romantic taste. Forrest may have supervised their colouring with more care than was always usual". Forrest served with the 3rd East Kent Regiment ('The Buffs') from 1802-14 in India and in the Peninsula, acting as Major of Brigade in Bengal in 1810; he purchased a commission as Major in the 34th Cumberland Regiment of Foot in 1814, having been appointed Deputy Assistant in the Quarter Master-General's Department in 1813, and served in the war in America in 1815 as Assistant Quarter-Master General, seeing action at New Orleans, his journal of the campaign was published in 1961. His Indian tour was undertaken in 1807, motivated by "a desire to explore [Bengal's] grander and wilder beauties." A superbly bound copy with a quite stunning miniature on the front cover.
