Panckoucke C.L.F. edit. & Conté del. - Letellier C.F. sc.
Egitto, 1823.

Charles Turner (1773-1857) was an English mezzotint engraver and draughtsman. Through his mother's influence he had access to the famous gallery at Blenheim Palace. Turner moved to London in about 1789, was apprenticed to the engraver John Jones, enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools and worked for Alderman John Boydell, the important print publisher. Turner was skilled in stipple and aquatint as well as mezzotint, his diverse talents producing a large range of subjects covering topography and genre. His main interest, though, was portraiture, and the greater part of the more than six hundred plates he created during his career, were portraits. His close friendship with J.M.W. Turner, led to his engraving much of the artist's work, and to his engraving twenty-four of the plates for Liber Studiorum. He engraved many of the finest Henry Raeburn portraits … [Click Below for Full Description]

Molé, Joseph
Paris, (de l'imprimerie d'Everat), 1823. 4to. Modern boards. Type specimen of two Arabic types cut by the leading Paris punchcutter Joseph Molé (1775-1841?), known as Molé jeune. Molé cut two sizes of Arabic (Saint-Augustin and Petit-Romain), including sorts for Turkish, Persian, Hindustani, Malay, Pashto (Afghani), also included in the present specimen. The work consists of a title-page, a brief preface and 12 leaves of specimens to show passages in all six languages for each of the two types. The types were cast on the named bodies (about 14 and 10 point), but were set with separate vowel points, the type with vowel points measuring about 161 mm/20 lines or about 24 point (Grand Parangon) and about 118 mm/20 lines or about 17 point (Gros Romain). Molé cut them under the guidance of the orientalist Louis-Mathieu Langlès (1763-1824) and they first appeared in the present work. - Binding only slightly rubbed along the extremities. Title-page with some faint waterstains, final leaf slightly foxed, otherwise in very good condition. - For Molé: ??Joseph Molé?, in: Journal für Buchdruckerkunst (1841), no. 10 (October), cols. 145?147.

Roquefeuil, Camille de
London: Sir Richard Phillips and Co., 1823. sep 22 2017. 112 pp. Roquefeuil was commander of a French expedition that sailed through the Pacific, up to the northwest coast, on to China and around the world. The first edition of these travels was published in the same year in France in two volumes. It is a rare book and might bring $10,000-$12,000. This English translation is more common, but still of great interest, containing early information on California, the Marquesas, Hawaii, etc. Hill says, “Attempts at trading in California, Nootka and Sitka were financial failures. Despite lack of profit, however, France now had an up-to-date report on conditions on the west coast of America... on Hawaii, the Marquesas... Roquefeuil gives many details of the Indian inhabitants.” Hill 1483. Cowan p. 542. Forbes 570, O’Reilly & Reitman 791. Judd, 151. Very good condition in modern antique style calf over marbled boards, with spine label.

Nearly a thousand pages, it encompasses statutes of the Mississippi and Alabama territories as well as the acts of the Alabama state legislature. It is unmatched as a historical document of the Old Southwest and illustrates well how Toulmin shaped the public institutions of the wild frontier" [Encyclopedia of Alabama]. Cohen 5616. Babbitt 8.
