Paris: Chez Saintin, Libraire de la Cour, 1823. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo. 133 by 112 mm. ii, 128 pp. Sixteen plates, thirteen of which are hand-colored, and each of these thirteen have two images. Comparatively scarce, with four copies showing up on OCLC First Search (three of an 1813 edition), and none of these copies appear to have hand-coloring going on. Other than frontis which depicts a boy painting a girl standing as his model, all the hand-colored illustrations are of animals, and the text describes these animals, with some emphasis placed on aspects of relevance to the artist. The final three plates, all non-colored, concern human characteristics. Original pink cartonnage binding, with silk corners, possibly later, and later blank endpapers. Gilt spine title with some rubbing. Scattered light foxing. Light wear overall.

Beltrami Giacomo Costantino,
Imprimé par I. Ashmead & Co.,, A Philadelphie, 1823 - In 8° (23,4x15 cm); IV, 183, (3) pp. Brossura coeva in cartoncino azzurro con difetti e piccole mancanze. [Click Below for Full Description]

Quite worn; title and final leaf separated and torn; first leaf of piano part torn with no loss of music; foxed; paper repairs. lacking wind, brass and timpani parts. First Edition. Jähns p. 338. Hoboken 15, 355 (but with price of "3 Rthl", the present copy with price "avec Orch. 3 Thlr / sans Acc. 1 Thlr 4 Gr."). "A prototypical 19th-century musician-critic, [Weber] sought through his works, words and efforts as performer and conductor to promote art and shape emerging middle-class audiences to its appreciation. His contributions to song, choral music and piano music were highly esteemed by his contemporaries, his opera overtures influenced the development of the concert overture and symphonic poem, and his explorations of novel timbres and orchestrations enriched the palette of musical sonorities. With the overwhelming success of his opera Der Freischütz in 1821 he became the leading exponent of German opera in the 1820s and an international celebrity. A seminal figure of the 19th century, he influenced composers as diverse as Marschner, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Berlioz and Liszt." Philipp Spitta et al in Grove Music Online. Item #21972. (KELLIEGRAM). BEWICK, THOMAS, Illustrator. AESOP
Newcastle: Printed by E. Walker, for T. Bewick and Son, 1823. Second Edition. This is a beautifully bound copy of the improved second edition of one of Bewick's most charming and best-loved works. More than any contemporaneous artist or printer, Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) was responsible for a renewed interest in wood engraving, and he was particularly attracted to the illustration of fables. While still an apprentice, Bewick was set to work cutting wood blocks for books of fables by Aesop, Gay, and others. By 1812, as his memoir records, he determined that if he recovered from a severe illness, he would undertake the publication of Aesop's "Fables." He mentions that he has always admired the Aesop published by Samuel Croxall (d. 1752) in 1722, and in the present edition, all but six of the fables, culled from Aesop, Phaedrus, Gay, and others, are based on fables in Croxall. At the same time, some 21 of these fables, according to Roscoe's count, are substantially rewritten, apparently by Bewick himself. As he records in his memoir, Bewick worked during his recuperation both by daylight and candlelight at cutting his illustrations, until his eyesight suffered. Some of the work was farmed out to his son, to William Harvey, and to William Temple, and experts differ on the number of cuts done by the master himself. Roscoe writes, "I estimate there are at least 39 of Bewick's headpieces, and probably more." Our second edition appeared five years after the first, and Roscoe notes that its "most important element is the reworking of a large number of the headpieces, done in an att … [Click Below for Full Description]

Freycinet, L. de:
1823., 1823 - 21,5 x 29,5 cm Original-Lithographie von L. de Freycinet, Carte de la partie Orientale Du Grand Archipel D`Asie, 1823; The map originates from the famous circumnavigation by the French navigator Louis-Claude de Freycinet (1779-1842). By 1816 Freycinet had drawn up plans for a world voyage which he hoped to command. With the strong support of Louis XVIII, the plan was approved and the ship Uranie placed at his disposal. His instructions were to enter the Pacific from the West and to concentrate on scientific work of a broad nature, rather than trying to make discoveries. The Uranie, equipped for a scientific journey, using new techniques such as metallic chains for the anchors, sailed from Toulon on 17 September 1817. The ship called at Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, the Cape of Good Hope (where Freycinet met up with Kotzebue), Mauritius, and Australia. After Australia he set sail to Timor, where he entered Kupang harbour on 9 October 1818. After Timor the expedition sailed north calling at the Moluccas, Philippines and Guam before heading for Hawaii. On 30 August 1819 the Uranie returned to Australia where the Uranie dropped anchor at Port Jackson on 18 November. The growth of Sydney since his earlier visit astonished Freycinet, and the botanists set forth on various expeditions to Botany Bay and the Blue Mountains. Favourable winds drove the ship speedily around Cape Horn in January 1820, but on 14 February, while entering French Bay in the Falklands, the Uranie stuck a submerged rock and had to be beached as quickly as possible to stop her sinking. A big part of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Roy, Rammohun; Ram Mohan Roy
The Unitarian Press, Calcutta 1823 - 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 379 pages; 1st edition. 379 pp. Bound in 3/4 leather and stippled green cloth boards. Title lettering and horizontal rules tooled in gilt to spine. Rebound probably late 19th or early 20th century, with lining pages refreshed. There is some considerable amount of worming to the leather and cloth boards, and continuing throughout the text. Worming is generally pin head sized and through the pages, except in occasional instances where the insect or larvae bored veritcally for a short length along the surface of several adjacent pages. Heaviest at front and rear endpages, but there is no loss of readability. Prior onwer name penned to front endpage; his extensive pencil margin notes fill the margins of some number of the first 25-30 pages and several more toward the end of the text. No marks observed in the body of the text. Quite uncommon in the original edition, as are most paper items of this age from the subcontinent. The title page and the last page of text appear to be bound on stubs. There is some careful paper mending to the edges of the final printed page. A pioneering and important social reformer, religious iconoclast and prolific author, Roy authored several "Appeals" which argued for Christ's life as given in the Gospels to be viewed as a moral and civic set of Precepts for living. Snugly bound copy; quite scarce in the original edition. Good copy [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Garat Dominique Pierre Jean 1764 1823
