After exploring Coronation Gulf, which Franklin named, the expedition returned to York Factory, having experienced extreme hardship and the loss of several members of the party. Franklin?s narrative is of interest not only as a document of human courage and endurance, but also for its depiction of the Indians - Cree, Dog-Rib, and Chipewyan - on whom the survival of the expedition at last depended. William Waller Hening
Richmond; Philadelphia: Bartow; DeSilver; W. Gray at the Franklin Press; J. & G. Cochran, 1823. Condition: Very Good binding. The official catalogue of the laws of Virginia. For over a century and a half, in the colony of Virginia and then in the Commonwealth, no official effort was made to preserve a formal record of the laws passed by the General Assembly. To remedy the obvious problems which resulted--lawyers and courts were far from uniform in their application of the law--the General Assembly, in 1795, authorized the publication of laws passed from the earliest days of the Colony, and then the Commonwealth. It was not until 1808 that the project was actually undertaken, and William Waller Hening was placed in charge. Hening relied heavily on Thomas Jefferson's collection of the laws, and Jefferson penned the Preface to Volume 1. Jefferson provided Hening with a promotional letters to help him increase subscriptions to the work in which he states, "The compilation appears to be correctly & judiciously made, and gives us exactly what I had so long considered as a desideratum for our country."~The complete set in 13 volumes, lacking the Supplemental Volume. Uniformly bound in period calf, with morocco labels. The front board of each volume is stamped in gilt with the name "Wm. F. Pendleton". A nice association, as Pendleton was a member of the Executive Committee of the Virginia Legislature, charged along with other members with reviewing the publication of the statutes and making corrections; their names appear above the Errata notices in each volume, with Pendleton's na … [Click Below for Full Description]

Between 1820 and 1822 Bakewell was travelling in the Tarentaise, the Graian and Pennine Alps, in Switzerland, and Auvergne; and in 1823 published his 'Travels,' so described in the sub-title, in two volumes, with illustrations, some of which were by his wife. Coxe, Peter
London: Printed by J.(ames) Moyes, Greville Street for James Carpenter & Son, Old Bond Street; and R. Ackermann, Strand, 1823. First Edition, Large Paper copy. Engraved title, portrait, and 30 engraved plates with India proofs before letters tipped in. xvi, [16], 354, [4] pp. 1 vols. 4to (11 x 7-1/2 inches). The First Steel-Engraved Plate?, LARGE PAPER, WITH INDIA PROOFS. The plate on page 288, "Silent the guest surveyed the crowd", engraved by Charles Warren, the leading protagonist of steel-engraving at this time, is dated 1822, and has traditionally been considered to be the first steel-engraved book illustration. Basil Hunnisett, in Steel Engraved Book Illustrations in England, expresses doubts as to whether it actually was engraved on steel, suggesting that the first may be Warren's engraving of Adam and Eve for an 1822 edition of Paradise Lost. Whatever the case may be, Coxe's poem -- a paean to the pleasures of rural pastimes, especially sporting amusements -- is beautifully illustrated in this sumptous Ackermann production. Berry and Poole, in Annals of Printing, dates the first steel engravings at 1823, but does not cite a specific book. The book has an illustration by Constable, one of the first artists lending their work to this new media. A note at the front of the book and on the list of subscribers identifies this as Scottish artist David Wilkie's copy. He painted the scene after which the plate at page 288 was engraved. Price, William.
London Kingsbury, Parbury, and Allen, printed by T. Eaton, Worcester, 1823. First edition. 4to (26 x 20 cm); pp. [xiii], [1], 140, 48, 48, [ii, errata and advertisements], [ii, advertisement and price list for Netherstone House]. With Arabic, Persian, and Hindustani text. Modern half calf over cloth; untrimmed; a fine copy. A tri-lingual grammar, treating Persian and Hindustani in parallel and Arabic in a separate section, prepared for the use of candidates for service with the East India Company by William Price (1771-1830), retired ladies' shoemaker and linguistic autodidact. Price had pursued his linguistic studies in parallel with his trade as a shoemaker, befriending the philologist George Hadley, and gaining an introduction to William Ouseley, who arranged for him to have access to the collections at the British Museum. When Price's father died in 1807, he retired to pursue his interest in oriental languages, serving as interpreter to Sir Gore Ouseley's mission to Persia from 1811 to 1812, where he met Mirza Salih of Shiraz, who composed the Persian dialogues contained in the present work. When he returned to Worcester, Price taught oriental languages at a seminary run by his friend Alexander Humphreys at Netherton House, which offered parallel classical and oriental syllabi. Price first printed a few sheets for his students, but finding that their needs and abilities demanded a more substantial text, prepared the present work from his own notes and the dialogues composed by Mirza Salih, which he translated into English and French, and also transliterated into roman c … [Click Below for Full Description]

The final seven pages are detailed 'Returns', for June 1817 and 1820, listing the male and female slaves 'in the possession of Roger Dobson as attorney to John Simpson the owner' of the two Jamaica estates. Lined in red ink, the lists include the name, colour, age (if known), heritage (African or Creole) and 'remarks' (usually recording the mother's name) of each slave. In 1817, the total number of slaves on the Tilston Estate was 222. In 1820 the figure was 208 with the second Return recording the births and deaths between June 1817 and 1820: 12 births, 24 deaths, and two runaways. Sir Astley Cooper, a student in 1777-8, said: "Fyfe I attended, and learned much from him. He was a horrid lecturer, but an industrious, worthy man, and good practical anatomist . his drawings and depictions were well made and very useful"' (ODNB). Fyfe's Compendium first appeared in 1800, and by the 7th edition included directions for dissecting. The anonymous owner of this copy has annotated the sections of the text relating to bones, muscles, the viscera (e.g. the liver and testicles), and blood vessels … [Click Below for Full Description]
