London, James Griphi (d. i. Aarau), 1823. - 3 Bände. Mit gest. Frontispiz von Jos. Hutter. 8 Bll., XVI, 328 S.; 444 S. Etwas spätere HLdr.-Bde. Goedeke X, 10, 20. Journal of a Voyage to the Northern Whale-Fishery

printed for Archibald Constable & Co., and Hurst, Robinson & Co. of London, Edinburgh 1823 - (8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches). Half-title. 8 engraved plates and maps (comprising: 1 folding map, 2 folding plates, 4 plates). Some light foxing. Contemporary half calf and brown pebbled cloth covered boards, spine with raised bands, morocco lettering piece First edition of the most important work by one of greatest of all Arctic explorers: "Geographically . Scoresby's discoveries were greater in importance and number than those of any other single navigator in northern waters" (Hill). "This book is an account of a voyage in which several weeks were spent in whaling and in the exploration of the Scoresby Sound region, in a search for Eskimo settlements and in quest of magnetic and other scientific observations. Included are descriptions of ice conditions, physical features, ocean currents, and ruins of Eskimo dwellings. The nine appendices include a list of plants by Sir W.J. Hooker, and extracts from the 1822 journals of two other whalers, the Hercules of Aberdeen, Captain Thomas Fairburn, and the Trafalgar of Hull, Captain Lloyd" (Hill). Scoresby's final Arctic voyage on the ship Baffin was to the relatively unknown eastern coast of Greenland in 1822. As weather conditions allowed him to approach close to shore, his chart of that coast, from 69°N to 75°N, was the most accurate of the time and included several new discoveries, including Scoresby's Sound which he named in honor of his father. ("Index of all Commercial Steel and Iron Workers in Waidhofen upon Ybbs"). Waidhofen/Ybbs, 26. VIII. 1823.

1823. Oblong 4to (256 x 204 mm). Manuscript (ink on paper), 64 pp. with numerous illustrations in watercolours and pen-and-ink, mainly in Grisaille manner (iron tools as well as punch-marks and monograms). Contemporary coloured pink and turquoise papered boards with gilt cover borders and paper applications. All edges gilt. This uncommonly attractive manuscript from Waidhofen an der Ybbs, the centre of the Lower Austrian iron industry since the Middle Ages, depicts the products of the various local ironsmiths as well as their punch-marks in watercolours of superior quality, thus providing an invaluable a key to identifying extant iron tools. The illustrated tools include scythes, sickles, knives, hammers, pliers, compasses, wrenches and vices, saws, razors, locks and keys, axes and hatchets, spades, sabres, horseshoes, bells, lamps, guns and crossbows, files, nails, hooks, pots and pans, watering cans, spoons and ladles and many other specialist tools. - Dedicated to the 30-year-old Archduke Ferdinand (1793-1875), later (1835-48) Emperor of Austria as Ferdinand I, with illustrated dedicatory leaf following the title page: "Ihro Kais. Kön. Hoheit dem Kronprinz Ferdinand von Oesterreich bey Hochderselben Durchreise in der Commerzial-Stadt Waidhofen an der Yps, den 26. August 1823, in Ehrfurcht gewidmet vom Stadtmagistrat zu Waidhofen an der Yps" ("To his Imperial and Royal Highness the Crown Prince Ferdinand of Austria on the Occasion of His Passing Through the Commercial Town of Waidhofen Upon Ybbs on the 26th of August, 1823, Dedicated Reverently by the Town Council"). - Binding slightly rubbed and insignificantly stained in places. A fine document of Lower Austrian craft and trade history, important as a historical source.

First edition. Self wrappers. A very good unopened (uncut) copy with marginal dampstain to lower right corner throughout, faint foxing on front wrapper, else clean and bright.. 16 pp. Comte de Léaumont (1756-1831) was a creole planter from les Cayes, deputy to the Colonial Assembly, and at this time one of the leading colonial refugees from Santo Domingo, and founder of the Société des propriétires de Sant-Domingue in 1819, an organization of powerful colons organized to sway public opinion and lobby for their positions which ranged from the military reconquest of Saint Domingue, monetary restitution by the state, as had been the case of metropolitan aristocrats who received indemnity for their loses under the French Revolution, and/or if all else failed, protection from the their metropolitan creditors, as both Napoleon and the Bourbons had done. But by the earlier 1820s resistance was growing to another suspension. Leaumont was unflagging in his defense of the colons as a contemporary note: "Every year, if some member of the Chamber of Deputies expressed the wish to see an end to the uncertain situation of Santo Domingo, a letter from Mr. De Leaumont, published in newspapers and sent home at the offender or his accomplices, had officially protest against any treaty which might be concluded between the King of France and 'rebellious slaves ... " ( Jean Baptiste G. Wallez, Précis historique des négociations entre la France et Saint-Domingue, Paris: Chez Monthieu,1826; pp. 430-439). In this Pétition, Léaumont again argues the planters positions about the funds to be allocated for the 'colons.' Rare. OCLC, COPAC, and other European Library databases locate no copies. A work with the same title but dated 25 mai 1824 is at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France (OCLC: 466504718).

        Woodford Sugar Plantation

London, 4 February 1823. Signed manuscript document tallying and describing the slaves of Woodford Estate, a sugar plantation in Grenada owned by Archibald Armstrong Jr, a member of the Council of Grenada, being a register of slaves held as of February 1823 listing 132 individuals by the English names assigned to them, their approximate age and basic physical description, also recording births and deaths, one female purchased, and one female manumitted (freed). Folio. 6 pages, on two string-tied double-leafs, laid watermark paper of Dartford papermaker J. Budgen 1822 featuring a large fleur-de-lys emblem. Leafs measure approximately 48 x 33,5 cm. Docketed to verso. Signed in the original 3 December 1823, by Thomas Amyot, the Registrar of Colonial Slaves in Great Britain. Together with single leaf, 32 x 20 cm, tallying the slaves and labourers of three of Armstrong's plantations in 1835, beginning with the Woodford, and providing a cursory "Classification and valuation of Negroes." A rare primary source document which survived the highly conflicted abolition period. Archibald Armstrong Jr. and John Armstrong, cousins, were also connected with the Revolution Hall Estate in Grenada, as well as the Garden Estate and Prospect Estate in Trinidad. The latter two are mentioned in the accompanying document. In 1807 when the Abolition of Slave Trade Act came into force, the trade of slaves from Africa to the British colonies became illegal. In 1819 the Office for the Registry of Colonial Slaves was established in London in order to combat ongoing illicit transportation. British Colonial administrators began keeping registers of black slaves who had been so-called "lawfully enslaved." Copies of the slave registers, such as, and including the present document, were submitted to the office in order to prove compliance. Registration generally occurred once every three years, and continued through to 1834 when slavery was officially abolished. "A List of Slaves belonging to and worked upon Woodford Estate in the Parish of Saint John & in the Possession of John Armstrong as the lawful attorney of Archibald Armstrong Proprietor" heads this rare manuscript document from Grenada-born slave-owner and member of the Council of Grenada who was involved in the West Indies sugar trade. Especially unusual, albeit dating to the abolition period of colonial slavery, one (1) young woman twenty-two years of age, was in fact freed from slavery. A scarce primary source record of a sugar plantation estate in Grenada, one hundred and thirty-one slaves are named in this slave register. Seventy-two males and sixty-one females, the oldest being a female aged sixty-two, their country of origin being either Africa or Grenada, a single-word description of their physical status, and their assumed age, essentially summarizes their worth. Occasionally, a remark "Country marks on forehead" further identifies the enslaved individual. In addition, the birth of 3 boys and 1 girl are recorded in this year. One female from Dominica, of approximately 28 years of age, was purchased. Two slaves died of lock jaw in this year. Archibald Armstrong junior, Esq. (1790-1868) was born in Grenada and inherited Woodford Estate in Grenada from his father Archibald Armstrong Senior of London, on condition that he pay £3400 to each of his four sisters and £30 per year to his brother Joseph. Archibald junior was in London for the proving of his father's will on 15 November 1823, being one of three executors together with his cousin John Armstrong who is also named in this document. Under the 1833 Abolition Act, Archibald Jr was the awardee of the compensation for the enslaved people on the Woodford estate on Grenada, and presumably for two other small awards there. As executor of Richard or Archibald Armstrong, he was also granted part of the compensation for the Garden estate in Trinidad. In addition, he was assignee with John Hoyes of George Armstrong in the award for the Prospect estate in Trinidad. Interestingly, he was a member of the council of Grenada, in 1835 took a twelve months leave, and by 1841 had settled with his wife Anne [née Munro Gibbs] who was also born in Grenada, and their three children, in St Peters Port, Guernsey. In West Coast Grenada, just slightly north of Halifax Bay, the Woodford sugar plantation estate house stands in dilapidation today. Thomas Amyot (1775-1850) was an English antiquarian, a solicitor, private secretary to Secretary of State William Windham, Registrar of Colonial Slaves in the government offices of Great Britain, Secretary and Registrar of Records in Upper Canada, author and a founder of the Camden Society. Almost all the men and women awarded compensation under the 1833 Abolition Act are listed in what is called a Parliamentary Return, an official reply by a government body to a request from an MP. The return is often referred to as the Slavery Abolition Act: An account of all sums of money awarded by the Commissioners of Slave Compensation while its full title is Accounts of slave compensation claims; for the colonies of Jamaica. Antigua. Honduras. St. Christopher's. Grenada. Dominica. Nevis. Virgin Islands. St. Lucia. British Guiana. Montserrat. Bermuda. Bahamas. Tobago. St. Vincent's. Trinidad. Barbadoes. Mauritius. Cape of Good Hope. It can be found in House of Commons Parliamentary Papers 1837-1838 (215) vol. 48 and is 365 pages long. In 1832, before the abolition of slavery, there were 653 sugar estates in cultivation and over 500 coffee plantations in the British West Indies. The British Slavery Abolition Act provided grant totalling £20 million to compensate the slave-owners for the loss of their "human property"!

1823. 4to (200 x 255 mm). 2 pp. With marginal sketch of the instrument. To the mathematician and astronomer Louis Benjamin Francoeur (1773-1849), concerning a new artificial horizon. - Rather brittle; traces of original folds; remnants of later mounting tabs on reverse; narrow strip at right edge browned (with the reverse more evenly browned).         Album of photographs. Aden, Cairo and other places, c. 1870s-80s.

1823. Large landscape album (275 x 375 mm). 125 black and white photographs. Bound in full burgundy morocco with title stamped in gilt lettering on the front cover, album sheets edged with gilt, gilt roll-toothed border along pastedowns. A magnificent album of photographs providing an extensive panorama from Aden to on the southern tip of Yemen to Cairo. It includes views of the Suez Canal and Port Said, Somalis in traditional dress, details of architecture and lattice work, landmarks and street scenes, historical monuments and works of art. Three-quarters of the photographs are signed by three highly respected photographers of the period: the Zangaki Brothers (active 1870s-90s), Pascal Sébah (1823-86), and Luigi Fiorillo (active 1870-75). The whole is a representative and fine example of a high-quality album aimed at the tourist market. - Adelphoi Zangaki, the brothers Constantine and George Zangakis, were Greek photographers specializing in historical images for the tourist trade, who worked occasionally with the Port Said photographer, Hippolyte Arnoux. - Sébah, a leading Constantinople photographer, was renowned for his well-judged compositions and for the excellent print quality achieved by his technician A. Laroche. He carved a particular niche for himself through collaboration with the portrait painter Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910) who posed models in elaborate costumes for Sébah and then used the photographs as the basis for his oil paintings. A commission from the Ottoman court for Osman Hamdi Bey to direct the Ottoman exhibition in Vienna in 1873 yielded an album by Sébah, "Les Costumes Populaires de la Turquie", which earned him a gold medal from the Viennese, and another from the Sultan Abdulaziz. That year, he opened a branch in Egypt. A Catholic, he was buried in the Latin cemetery in Ferikoy, where his son was also interred. The firm founded by Sébah in 1857 continued until 1952, under his brother Cosimi and his son Jean, later in partnership with Policarpe Joaillier and then with Hagop Iskender and Leo Perpignani; it finished as Foto Sabah under Ismail Insel, partner to Iskender's son Bedros. - Fiorillo was active in the 1870s-80s and is known particularly for his haunting record of the British bombardment of Alexandria in 1882 during the Anglo-Egyptian war, views of the city before and after the attack. He was also occupied with the tourist trade.

The Presidential message proclaiming the Monroe Doctrine, in The National Intelligencer

Gales and Seaton, Washington, D.C. 1823 - Volume xi, no. 3417. 1823. Bound with 127 issues of the paper 8 July to 31 December 1823. Large folio, 4pp. (20 3/8 x 15 1/4 in.), printed five columns to the page, decorative masthead at top of page 1, Monroe's message with American eagle woodcut at head. FIRST NEWSPAPER PRINTING OF THE MONROE DOCTRINE, IN THE QUASI-OFFICIAL National Intelligencer. Monroe's historic message to Congress of 2 December 1823 (here occupying 6 columns on pages 2 and 3) enshrined as national policy principles suggested by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, condemning European intervention in the Americas and prohibiting all efforts at colonization. Monroe proclaimed that "The American continents, by the free and independent condition they have assumed and maintained, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers," and that any such intervention would be regarded as "manifestation of an unfriendly disposition towards the United States." His announcement "represented one of Adams' finest contributions to the emergence of the United States as a world power" (Nagel, John Quincy Adams, p.271). "By including the policy statement in his annual message Monroe gave his declaration a character reminiscent of Washington's well-remembered Farewell Address. He focussed attention upon his utterances as a declaration of national policy." (Ammon, James Monroe: The Quest for National Identity, p.492). This printing, in the quasi-official National Intelligencer, is preceded only by an exceedingly rare "extra" issued on 2 December by the same press. Grolier American 100, 33 (book form edition); Streeter Sale, lot 1734. Disbound, spine defective, occasionally minor fraying, but internally in fine condition [Attributes: First Edition]

Double-leaf letter with integral address and red wax seal. Both in very good condition. The complete archive contained in a metal chest measuring 14 x 20 x 12 inches. An authentic herbarium of estimable proportion, a substantial field work compiled by a botanist two centuries past, neatly presents and preserves 241 specimens, including samples of eurya taken from China, Cuba, and New Caledonia in the South Pacific, some eriocaulon from Bahia in Brazil. All regions represented in the substantial collection are as follows: Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, New Caledonia, Java, China, Egypt, Abyssinia, Oran, Tunisia, Algeria, Zanzibar, France and Italy. Jaubert had created a substantial herbarium, and from that which he had collected, as well as a collection held by the National Museum of Natural History, together with Édouard Spach (1801-79), he published a five volume work titled "Illustrationes plantarum orientalium" (Paris 1842-57). Count Jaubert (1798-1874) was a French politician and botanist. Although passionate about natural history, he was made to study law. At the passing of his uncle, he inherited the title of Count, as well as an immense fortune which enabled him, among other things, to become director of the Paris-Orléans railway company, while finally concentrating on botany and politics. In 1821 Jaubert toured Auvergne and Provence, and also Austria and Italy, with botanist and geologist Victor Jacquemont to study the flora and geology of those regions. In the same year, together with celebrated German botanist Karl Sigismund Kunth who was the first to study and categorise plants from the American continents, and with four leading French botanists A. Brongniart, A. de Jussieu, J. B. A. Guillemin, and A. Richard, Jaubert founded the short-lived Natural History Society of Paris. The society financed an expedition to Asia of several naturalists, among them Pierre Martin Rémi Aucher-Éloy (1792-1838), a pharmacist and botanist who in 1830 relocated to Istanbul with aims of creating an Herbier d'Orient. Despite political responsibilities, in 1839 Jaubert made a journey to Asia Minor for botanical research, travelling with archaeologist F. M. C. Texier. Over the years Jaubert personally funded expeditions to the Orient made by several botanists. In the late 1840s Jaubert withdrew from political life, for a few years, devoting himself to botany and business. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1858, and was among the founders of the Botanical Society of France in 1854.

Ultimately, the book was printed in Macao, as stated on the bottom of the final leaf (and distributed in England by John Murray). - A few corner defects, otherwise a good copy in a modern period-style binding. Cordier 1429. OCLC 4802428.

Paris, A. Bertrand, 1823.

1823. 2 text vols. in 8vo and atlas in folio. 464 pp. 644 pp. (8), 12 lithogr. plates (6 of them hand-coloured), including a folding hand-coloured plan and the folding, double-page map of the Nejd. Contemp. full calf with giltstamped spine labels (text) and original green cardboard portfolio with printed title label to cover (atlas); maps and plates loosely inserted within. First edition, the extremely rare coloured issue. Mengin's history of Egypt from the end of the French expedition to Khedive Muhammad Ali's dramatic reforms of Egyptian society and culture is mainly sought for its extensive appendix containing an early chronicle of the Wahhabis, with an account of the sack of Derrieh. "This chronicle is ascribed to a grandson of the Shaykh named 'le cheykh Abderrahman el-Oguyeh', presumably this is Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan (d. 1869)", who travelled from Basra to Mecca and Medina (M. Cook, below). The folio-sized atlas contains the celebrated portrait of Abdullah ibn Saud, leader of the first Saudi state, who was executed by the Turks for sedition, and the famous, large map of the Nejd country with an inset of the environs of "El-Derreth" near Riyadh by E. F. Jombard. His commentary on the map is of particular note, being a synthesis of Arab and western knowledge, with many place names added for the first time. This "notice géographique" (vol. II, pp. 549-613) also includes a "nomenclature du pays de Nedjid", mentioning - among other places - Dubai and Qatar both in the original Arabic and in French transliteration. - Some waterstaining throughout, but confined to margins. The work is rarely found complete with both text volumes and the atlas as present; even the map has separately commanded several thousand pounds at auctions (cf. Sotheby's London, 6 May 2010, lot 147). Copies in contemporary hand colour are highly uncommon. Macro, Bibliography of the Arabian Peninsula, 1577. Atabey 802 (without the Atlas).
