Autograph letter signed ("Humboldt"). No place or date, "a jeudi" [1823].

1823. 4to (200 x 255 mm). 2 pp. With marginal sketch of the instrument. To the mathematician and astronomer Louis Benjamin Francoeur (1773-1849), concerning a new artificial horizon. - Rather brittle; traces of original folds; remnants of later mounting tabs on reverse; narrow strip at right edge browned (with the reverse more evenly browned). Short tear to right hand edge affecting the text but without loss, professionally restored.

Album of photographs. Aden, Cairo and other places, c. 1870s-80s.

1823. Large landscape album (275 x 375 mm). 125 black and white photographs. Bound in full burgundy morocco with title stamped in gilt lettering on the front cover, album sheets edged with gilt, gilt roll-toothed border along pastedowns. A magnificent album of photographs providing an extensive panorama from Aden to on the southern tip of Yemen to Cairo. It includes views of the Suez Canal and Port Said, Somalis in traditional dress, details of architecture and lattice work, landmarks and street scenes, historical monuments and works of art. Three-quarters of the photographs are signed by three highly respected photographers of the period: the Zangaki Brothers (active 1870s-90s), Pascal Sébah (1823-86), and Luigi Fiorillo (active 1870-75). The whole is a representative and fine example of a high-quality album aimed at the tourist market. - Adelphoi Zangaki, the brothers Constantine and George Zangakis, were Greek photographers specializing in historical images for the tourist trade, who worked occasionally with the Port Said photographer, Hippolyte Arnoux. - Sébah, a leading Constantinople photographer, was renowned for his well-judged compositions and for the excellent print quality achieved by his technician A. Laroche. He carved a particular niche for himself through collaboration with the portrait painter Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910) who posed models in elaborate costumes for Sébah and then used the photographs as the basis for his oil paintings. A commission from the Ottoman court for Osman Hamdi Bey to direct the Ottoman exhibition in Vienna in 1873 yielded an album by Sébah, "Les Costumes Populaires de la Turquie", which earned him a gold medal from the Viennese, and another from the Sultan Abdulaziz. That year, he opened a branch in Egypt. A Catholic, he was buried in the Latin cemetery in Ferikoy, where his son was also interred. The firm founded by Sébah in 1857 continued until 1952, under his brother Cosimi and his son Jean, later in partnership with Policarpe Joaillier and then with Hagop Iskender and Leo Perpignani; it finished as Foto Sabah under Ismail Insel, partner to Iskender's son Bedros. - Fiorillo was active in the 1870s-80s and is known particularly for his haunting record of the British bombardment of Alexandria in 1882 during the Anglo-Egyptian war, views of the city before and after the attack. He was also occupied with the tourist trade.

The Presidential message proclaiming the Monroe Doctrine, in The National Intelligencer

Gales and Seaton, Washington, D.C. 1823 - Volume xi, no. 3417. 1823. Bound with 127 issues of the paper 8 July to 31 December 1823. Large folio, 4pp. (20 3/8 x 15 1/4 in.), printed five columns to the page, decorative masthead at top of page 1, Monroe's message with American eagle woodcut at head. FIRST NEWSPAPER PRINTING OF THE MONROE DOCTRINE, IN THE QUASI-OFFICIAL National Intelligencer. Monroe's historic message to Congress of 2 December 1823 (here occupying 6 columns on pages 2 and 3) enshrined as national policy principles suggested by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, condemning European intervention in the Americas and prohibiting all efforts at colonization. Monroe proclaimed that "The American continents, by the free and independent condition they have assumed and maintained, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers," and that any such intervention would be regarded as "manifestation of an unfriendly disposition towards the United States." His announcement "represented one of Adams' finest contributions to the emergence of the United States as a world power" (Nagel, John Quincy Adams, p.271). "By including the policy statement in his annual message Monroe gave his declaration a character reminiscent of Washington's well-remembered Farewell Address. He focussed attention upon his utterances as a declaration of national policy." (Ammon, James Monroe: The Quest for National Identity, p.492). This printing, in the quasi-official National Intelligencer, is preceded only by an exceedingly rare "extra" issued on 2 December by the same press. Grolier American 100, 33 (book form edition); Streeter Sale, lot 1734. Disbound, spine defective, occasionally minor fraying, but internally in fine condition [Attributes: First Edition]

Each neatly mounted to a single cardstock leaf and contained in 42 blue folders measuring 17 x 11 inches approx. Indication of moisture or wear to some leaves, otherwise in very good condition, a lovely collection of specimens preserved with care. Together with field tools, including an ornate green collector's tin with working clasp, and a plant press made by P & L in Paris. Some paint loss to tin, otherwise both in very good, original working condition. Together with Jaubert's original photographic carte-de-visite c. 1860, and a ms. letter (in French), signed by him, 7 January 1830, with excellent botanical content, to an Italian botanist in Florence Eugène de Reboul (1781-1851), specifically mentioning his upcoming botanical travels to Italy. Double-leaf letter with integral address and red wax seal. Both in very good condition. The complete archive contained in a metal chest measuring 14 x 20 x 12 inches. An authentic herbarium of estimable proportion, a substantial field work compiled by a botanist two centuries past, neatly presents and preserves 241 specimens, including samples of eurya taken from China, Cuba, and New Caledonia in the South Pacific, some eriocaulon from Bahia in Brazil. All regions represented in the substantial collection are as follows: Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, New Caledonia, Java, China, Egypt, Abyssinia, Oran, Tunisia, Algeria, Zanzibar, France and Italy. Jaubert had created a substantial herbarium, and from that which he had collected, as well as a collection held by the National Museum of Natural History, together with Édouard Spach (1801-79), he published a five volume work titled "Illustrationes plantarum orientalium" (Paris 1842-57). Count Jaubert (1798-1874) was a French politician and botanist. Although passionate about natural history, he was made to study law. At the passing of his uncle, he inherited the title of Count, as well as an immense fortune which enabled him, among other things, to become director of the Paris-Orléans railway company, while finally concentrating on botany and politics. In 1821 Jaubert toured Auvergne and Provence, and also Austria and Italy, with botanist and geologist Victor Jacquemont to study the flora and geology of those regions. In the same year, together with celebrated German botanist Karl Sigismund Kunth who was the first to study and categorise plants from the American continents, and with four leading French botanists A. Brongniart, A. de Jussieu, J. B. A. Guillemin, and A. Richard, Jaubert founded the short-lived Natural History Society of Paris. The society financed an expedition to Asia of several naturalists, among them Pierre Martin Rémi Aucher-Éloy (1792-1838), a pharmacist and botanist who in 1830 relocated to Istanbul with aims of creating an Herbier d'Orient. Despite political responsibilities, in 1839 Jaubert made a journey to Asia Minor for botanical research, travelling with archaeologist F. M. C. Texier. Over the years Jaubert personally funded expeditions to the Orient made by several botanists. In the late 1840s Jaubert withdrew from political life, for a few years, devoting himself to botany and business. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1858, and was among the founders of the Botanical Society of France in 1854.

Paris, A. Bertrand, 1823.

1823. 2 text vols. in 8vo and atlas in folio. 464 pp. 644 pp. (8), 12 lithogr. plates (6 of them hand-coloured), including a folding hand-coloured plan and the folding, double-page map of the Nejd. Contemp. full calf with giltstamped spine labels (text) and original green cardboard portfolio with printed title label to cover (atlas); maps and plates loosely inserted within. First edition, the extremely rare coloured issue. Mengin's history of Egypt from the end of the French expedition to Khedive Muhammad Ali's dramatic reforms of Egyptian society and culture is mainly sought for its extensive appendix containing an early chronicle of the Wahhabis, with an account of the sack of Derrieh. "This chronicle is ascribed to a grandson of the Shaykh named 'le cheykh Abderrahman el-Oguyeh', presumably this is Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan (d. 1869)", who travelled from Basra to Mecca and Medina (M. Cook, below). The folio-sized atlas contains the celebrated portrait of Abdullah ibn Saud, leader of the first Saudi state, who was executed by the Turks for sedition, and the famous, large map of the Nejd country with an inset of the environs of "El-Derreth" near Riyadh by E. F. Jombard. His commentary on the map is of particular note, being a synthesis of Arab and western knowledge, with many place names added for the first time. This "notice géographique" (vol. II, pp. 549-613) also includes a "nomenclature du pays de Nedjid", mentioning - among other places - Dubai and Qatar both in the original Arabic and in French transliteration. - Some waterstaining throughout, but confined to margins. The work is rarely found complete with both text volumes and the atlas as present; even the map has separately commanded several thousand pounds at auctions (cf. Sotheby's London, 6 May 2010, lot 147). Copies in contemporary hand colour are highly uncommon. Macro, Bibliography of the Arabian Peninsula, 1577. Atabey 802 (without the Atlas). Ibrahim-Hilmy II, 30. Michael Cook. On the Origins of Wahhabism. In: Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, Vol. 2, No. 2 (July 1992), pp. 191-202, at 192.

London, James Griphi (d. i. Aarau), 1823.. 2 Bände. Mit gest. Frontispiz von Jos. Hutter. 8 Bll., XVI, 328 S.; 444 S. Etwas spätere HLdr.-Bde. Goedeke X, 10, 20.

ROMAN ANTIQUITIES The series of views Antichità Romane, made of 101 plates, was realized with the proceeds of the sale of the plates used for Raccolta di cinquanta principali vedute di antichità tratte dai scavi fatti in Roma in questi ultimi tempi divided in 40 views, published in 1817. This is the work with which the artist wanted to become one of the most important artists in the Roman cultural life; we can state that if we consider the size of the work and the subject he choose. In this work Rossini tested himself with his predecessor, G. B. Piranesi, who was considered as a point of reference when it came to ancient views and originality. Rossini, was deeply influenced by Piranesi, as it can be seen in the title, the legends, the same points of views and framing. Another important element he took from Piranesi is the use of light and the contrast of chiaroscuro. In these plates Rossini reached the higher mastery of the technique, realizing also extremely particular framings and a new and complex organization of the space. In the plates quite common is the diagonal view of the subject, which gave him the possibility to elaborate more the chiaroscuro. However, since the work is made of many plates, it is quite discontinuous and some of the plates present some indecision in the perspective formulation and a little harshness in the mark. Always following the tradition of his time, Rossini's choice of the subjects does not present any kind of originality; he actually depicted all the main archaeological sites and monuments of Rome. The sole novelty is represented by the precise record of the excavation works and analysis. Quite interesting, from a documental point of view, are the last four engravings depicting the destruction of the Basilica of St. Paul outside the wall, after the fire of July the 15th, 1823. The will to give life to his views, the reinstatement of the monuments to their historic context and the fact that he was not good with figures, brought Rossini to start a partnership with Bartolomeo Pinelli, Roman engraver and costume illustrator of daily life. He was the one who realized the figures of Rossini's views. Sometimes Pinelli took the subjects from his previous collection Costumi pittoreschi romani. Roma Rome Luigi Rossini incisore. The island population had been substantially augmented in 1803 with the arrival of 800 Scottish High-landers and Johnstone had travelled across the Atlantic as a missionary. His intentions in the 'Letters' are described in brief on the title-page: "The Author of these Letters went out for the express purpose of surveying Prince Edward Island, and collecting information on the subject of Emigration. During two Summers, and one Winter, he was assiduously engaged in the prosecution of this object; and the small Volume now presented to the Public, will be found to contain a full and particular Account of the Climate, Soil, Natural Productions, and Mode of Husbandry adopted in the Island; together with Sketches of Scenery, Manners of the Inhabitants. the whole being intended for the guidance of future Emigrants, particularly as to what Implements and Necessaries it may be proper to provide themselves with before crossing the Atlantic."The 'Travels' is a more detailed analysis of the religious complexion of the islanders (English, Irish and Scottish) and describes Johnstone's attempts to provide structured religious education for the Highlanders and other settlers. The two works also give notable accounts of the native American population (the Mi'kmaq Indians) and of potato cultivation. Waterston p39. "A resume of denominations, church buildings and clergymen on the Island, as seen by a Presbyterian setting out to further the Sunday School movement. Johnstone also reports on black- horned cattle, lean and long-legged sheep, pigs so hungry they will catch a fowl and eat it live, wooden frame houses, and the barrens near Charlottetown.

The Arctic Regions.

Large folio (618 x 498 mm). Original brown morocco elaborately gilt, marbled endpapers. Housed in an oatmeal cloth folding case. First and only edition of this highly uncommon and highly desirable Arctic record, one of perhaps as few as 300 copies. The book forms a record of the last of seven voyages to Labrador and Greenland that Bradford sponsored or participated in during the 1860s: "all early examples of what one might call 'eco-art tourism'"(Books on Ice). Bradford was born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts in 1823, and established himself as a painter of ship portraits in Lynn and other local harbours, his work being characterised by its "correctness ... and carefulness" (DAB). From this he progressed to coastal studies, gradually moving northwards up the New England and Canadian coasts, and thence, inspired by the recently published accounts of the Franklin search expeditions, to the Arctic. "I was seized with a desire, which had become uncontrollable, to visit the scenes they had described and study Nature under the terrible aspects of the Frigid Zone" (quoted in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography). Between 1861 and 1867 he carried out a series of annual expeditions "along the coasts of Nova Scotia and Labrador for the purpose of painting northern scenery and icebergs", and in 1869 he obtained the support of broker and railroad baron Le Grand Lockwood to fit out the Scottish steamship Panther for his most ambitious voyage yet. His party of forty included John Bartlett, the son of the owner of the ship, who later captained for Peary, Dr Isaac Hayes, who had served under Kane, and two photographers, John B. Dunmore and George B. Critcherson, from the leading Boston photographic studio of James William Black. Departing from St John's on 3 July, the party sailed as far north as Baffin Island and Melville Bay, Greenland, and Bradford "returned with a collection of photographs and a vast number of sketches of the rugged landscape and the details of Inuit life". He was later to say that this vast archive of photographs had saved him "eight or ten voyages to the Arctic regions, now I gather my inspirations from my photographic subjects just as an author gains food from his library. I could not paint without them" (quoted by Horch). In the early 1870s Bradford settled in London, setting up a studio which attracted considerable aristocratic patronage (his most important commission came from Queen Victoria, the painting entitled "The Panther off the Coast of Greenland under the Midnight Sun" which was hung in the library of Windsor Castle), enjoying a second career as a lecturer on the Arctic, and in 1873 publishing the present volume; "no doubt ... one of the most sumptuous of the century ... one of the nineteenth century's most spectacular photographically illustrated travel books" (Parr & Badger). The technical problems that attended the handling of wet-plate negatives under extreme conditions makes the quality of Dunmore and Critcherson's images all the more remarkable, being "counted not only amongst the earliest, but also the best polar photographs".

        The World on Mercator's Projection

Philadelphia: H. S. Tanner, 1823. Copper-engraved map, with full original color, n very good condition. A World map by one of America's first great cartographers The objective of depicting a three dimensional sphere on a two dimensional sheet of paper has challenged mapmakers since Classical times. Mercator's solution was to straighten all of the longitudinal meridians, making them perpendicular to the lines of latitude. The consequence of this projection was that while lands close to the Equator assumed a relatively realistic form, lands closer to the poles attained a progressively attenuated and exaggeratedly large appearance. The map reflects the great improvements in geographical understanding in the wake of the epic sea voyages of the late eighteenth-century, most notably those by Cook, La Perouse and Vancouver.

        Memoria justificativa do Marquez d'Alorna.

Hamburg, Na Typographia de F.H. Nestler, (1823). - Large 4° (27 x 21.5 cm.), contemporary brown straight-grain morocco (3 pinpoint wormholes on upper cover, slight wear to spine), gilt-rolled border on each cover, green endleaves, all text-block edges gilt. Wood-engraved vignette on title page. Light browning. In fine condition. Unsigned presentation inscription to Pedro Gabe de Massarellos, Portuguese consul general in Hamburg, on front flyleaf recto. 26 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION, very rare, of this defense of the third Marques de Alorna's conduct during the Peninsular War. The Marques (Pedro de Almeida Portugal, 1754-1813) held several high military positions from 1801 to 1807, during which time he did what he could to prepare Portugal for the inevitable invasion by French and Spanish forces. When it came in November 1807, Alorna was ordered by his superiors to offer no resistance. Left at the mercy of the French occupiers following the royal family's flight to Brazil, the Portuguese army was converted into a "Portuguese Legion" and sent into Spain and France to fight for Napoleon. Alorna went as well, returning to Portugal in 1810 as part of the invading forces led by Marshal Masséna. For this action, Alorna was convicted in absentia of @lèse majesté and sentenced to death, his property was confiscated, and a substantial bounty placed on his head. Alorna later took part in Napoleon's ill-fated invasion of Russia, dying at Königsberg during the retreat. The @Memoria describes and defends Alorna's actions, to the extent of crediting him with preserving the Portuguese monarchy by providing the royal family sufficient time to flee to Brazil. It was probably written by, or at the behest of, Alorna's sister, D. Leonor de Almeida, 4º Marquesa de Alorna (1750-1839). A highly regarded poet and patron of the arts, the Marquesa successfully petitioned for the restoration of her brother's honor (and his property). Pages 17-26 print the text of the judicial decision, dated Lisbon, August 16, 1823, reversing Alorna's conviction.*** Innocêncio VI, 181: "documento de que ainda não vi mais que dous ou tres exemplares."
