Grammatica Sanskrita. Nunc primum in Germania edidit Othmarus Frank

Wirceburgi [Würzburg], Typographice et lithographice sumtibus propriis; Lipsiae [Leipzig], Prostat apud Fridericum Fleischer, 1823 . Crown quarto. Pp. xv, v, 218. Plus 10 plates, of which 4 are folding. Bound in the original publisher?s card wrappers, both sides with a decorative frame, and with a central ornamental illustration embossed in black, wraps bit marked, spine worn, stain on back cover. With neat, contemporary inscription on first flyleaf. A very good, wide-margined copy, well preserved in the original state. - - First edition. A good copy of the first Sanskrit grammar to appear in Germany, and a unique example of printing art. Lacking an access to any Sanskrit types, Frank could not print the book in letterpress and had to use lithography, a technique usually reserved for the printing of illustrations. Typographically it is unique that the entire text, both the Latin and the Sanskrit, were transferred to stone by hand. Very scarce. Unsophisticated copies in the original binding are practically unavailable.

A Voyage in the South Seas... with Particular Details of the Gallipagos (sic) and Washington Islands

Lon., 1823.. b/w plates. Something of an oddity. The keynote of Porter’s career - and of his published narrative - was his campaign in the Pacific against British shipping during the War of 1812. His book was first published in America in 1815. It appeared eight years later in London, with all the anti-British passages cut out. This edition features three plates and a folding map of the Galapagos Islands. See Hill, 1374. Howes P-484. A handsome, untrimmed copy, rebound in half morocco over marbled boards. An excellent copy of a scarce book.

His career coincided with a period of great archeological activity. His etchings of Rome followed Piranesi\'s example, and reported the latest excavations to an avidly interested European audience.

Piatti marmorizzati. 3 tabelle ripiegate f.t. e una tav. incisa f.t. Minime fioriture. Ottimo esemplare. ?Chevreul?s Recherches is a full account of the chemistry of fats. He had revealed the nature of a large and important class of organic substances and had shown that they were composed of a few chemical species which were amenable to analysis and obeyed the same laws of chemical combination followed by simpler substances in the inorganic realm. The book is a model of complete, exhaustive research in organic chemistry.. Few areas of chemistry at this time had been so throughly explored. Although his studies were followed by those of many chemists, who extended the number of fatty acids isolatable from fats and oils, there was no one comparable to Chevreul in this field until Thomas Percy Hilditch, a century later? (D.S.B.). "A classic study of animal fats. Chevreul discovered that fats are composed of fatty acids and glycerol" (Garrison-Morton). Poggendorff, I, 443. Brunet, I, 1841. Scienziati e tecnologi, I, 306 - 307. "Il principale lavoro di Chevreul si svolse nel campo della chimica organica e nel 1823 pubblicò il risultato di parecchi anni di lavoro sulla teoria della saponificazione. Il lavoro di Chevreul ha fornito la base scientifica ad un' industria la cui espansione era legata all' incremento della produzione di soda".

Edinburgh, [Ballantyne], 1824, pp.21+[3 blank]. Bound at the front of the volume. Edited, with extensive commentary, by David Laing. Numbers i-iv are printed on Alexander Cowan's fine wove paper with blank protective leaves from other distinguished mills (such as Whatman's); the remainder are printed on Cowan's laid, specially manufactured and watermarked for Bannatyne Club use. Scott's facetious reference to the Roxburghe Club, "that Society of select Bibliomaniacs," in the prefatory letter to Peveril of the Peak, led to the Author of Waverley's invitation to join the Club, which Scott, while still playing the "Great Unknown," accepted. At the same time he was taking the leading part in the founding of the Bannatyne Club, named after George Bannatyne (1545-1606?), whose rich collection of Scottish poetry, collected during his youth and compiled during the pestilence of 1568, preserved a mass of Scottish manuscript poetry that would otherwise have been lost. In Sir Walter's own words, Bannatyne accomplished nothing less than "saving the literature of a whole nation." The new club, modelled on the Roxburghe example, was instituted "to print works illustrative of the history, antiquities and literature of Scotland," as organised and financed by the members under expert editorship: an object it accomplished, by its final demise in 1867, to a far greater extent than had been contemplated by its original members. Scott was its founding president, and presided until his death; other founding members included the Chief Commissioner William Adam, Archibald Constable, Lord Eldin, James Maidment, Robert Pitcairn, Patrick Fraser Tytler, and David Laing, the Club's faithful and tireless Secretary from first to last. The first dinner, on March 9th 1823, was marked by the song which Scott composed for the occasion (item i). He was also closely connected with the ninth and tenth Garlands (issued together: item ix). The Reever's Penance, written by Robert Surtees of Mainsforth, Durham, had been printed at Scott's expense on Club paper c.1830, but never circulated. Sir Walter added "Quod ane Gude Squyer of Northumberland. - R.S. of M." The other, Captain Ward and the Rainbow, was sent from Abbotsford to Laing on 17th September 1831, partly written in Scott's own hand and with an introductory note by him, shortly before he set out on his final journey in search of health. The printed copies of The Reever's Penance were eventually received by Laing in 1848 and were attached to copies to Captain Ward and the Rainbow, with a preface and notes by Laing. This pair of Garlands were given "to those Members of the Bannatyne Club who propose dining together next Thursday [23rd February 1848], to celebrate the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Club, of which [Scott] was the Founder and President." (Laing's Preface) Of the other garlands, four are by Tytler, one by Jamieson, and one by Pitcairn (for all of whom see DNB): one is unascribed, and the last is by the seventeenth century poet George Lauder. All but the last are therefore original works. Most Club publications were limited to editions of about 100 copies, limited by the maximum number of Club members; the Garlands were however issued in even smaller numbers - probably no more than forty copies of any of them, limited to the numbers who would be able to attend the dinners at which they were distributed - over a period of twenty-five years. Largely because of their ephemeral nature, individual Garlands are scarce: Van Antwerp wrote of his copy of Scott's: "it has never been offered at auction and mine is the only one I have seen." Complete sets are rare. This one is appropriately accompanied by Bannatyne's own Poems, extracted from his manuscript collection, with a full commentary by David Laing. This is another scarce work, with no more than forty copies privately distributed.

Précis des Leçons d'Architecture données a l'École Royale Polytechnique.

Edinburgh, Printed by George Ramsay and Company, and Hurst, Robinson and Co. in London, 1823.

" Captain Edward Pelham Brenton (20 July 1774 - 13 April 1839) was an officer of the British Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars who military career was relatively quiet, apart from involvement in the capture of Martinique in 1809. Brenton became famous in the aftermath of the war, when he published the Naval History of Great Britain from the Year 1783 to 1822 in 1823. The book was popular, but Brenton was criticised at the time and since for his failure to distinguish between fact and rumour as well as his partisan political leanings. In Brenton's later life, he was heavily involved in charitable enterprises in the poorer areas of London with mixed success." - See Wikipedia .

        J. M. Elford’s Marine Telegraph; or, Universal Signal Book

Charleston, SC., 1823.. Handcolored plate. color flag ills. on front and rear pastedowns. “So composed as to enable vessels at sea, provided with only two sets of the six telegraphic flags, described in the plate, to make 7569 signals ... and to act as telegraphs to each other ... Being also the key to the patent telegraph, invented by the author, capable of making 9330 progressive changes, by using the figures from 1 to 6 only.” This is quite an early American signal book. Truxtun and Porter had previously developed systems for naval use, but as far as I know this is the earliest American merchant system. Winterthur has a manuscript copy of Elford’s Signal system dated 1818. It was followed in 1832 by Parker’s signal book and then, in 1847, by Rogers’ system. There were other early systems in America, but not all their inventors published books. Elford’s marine visual system depended on six uniquely patterned flags, and on a “conversation flag.” These are illustrated in this book, along with a glossary of words and sentences, and their numerical equivalents, which would be signaled by means of the flags. A sheet of testimonials has been pasted on the inside of the front board. Lemuel Moody of Portland is the first name. It would be interesting to know if he used Elford’s system to signal from his observatory. The front blank is inscribed, “Brig Maese 45-52. Hoist your number on coming into or leaving port.” With the corresponding set of signal flags drawn below, making “45-52.” The back pastedown contains testimonials from the Boston Marine Society. It is illustrated with hand colored flags as well. A couple of leaves appear to have been torn out of the back of the book, but these must have been blanks or advertisements, since the pagination corresponds to that given in Worldcat and “American Imprints” 12436. Some staining and old damage to surface of paper on a few pages. Abrasion on vii resulting in loss of a few letters, otherwise no loss of text or damage to the flag plate. Bound in contemporary quarter leather over marbled boards. Rare. Worldcat shows only six libraries holding copies. Never seen in the trade, except at Ten Pound Island.

Paris: C.L.F. Panckcoucke, 1823. A DRAMATIC AND STUNNING VIEW BY AMBROISE-LOUIS GARNERAY Hand-colored aquatint engraving Sheet size: 17" x 23 3/4" 1823-34. The marine artist Ambroise-Louis Garneray was born in February, 1783. He received his first lessons in painting and drawing from his father, Jean-Francois, who was a pupil of David. The younger Garneray went to sea at the age of thirteen, and for nearly eighteen years served on battle ships, slavers, whaling vessels and on expeditions to the Caribbean and throughout the Pacific Ocean. Garneray finally returned to Paris in 1814 after spending eight years in England, where he had been detained after being captured at sea. He established himself as a marine painter upon his arrival, and studied engraving under Philibert Louis Debucourt. In 1815 he was admitted to the Salon, and exhibited his first painting, View of the Port of London, in the following year. He continued to exhibit, winning a gold medal in 1819, and later earned the patronage of Louis XVIII, who commissioned him to paint several scenes of naval battles. In 1833, Garneray was appointed director of the Rouen Museum, a post he resigned in 1837 to work on designs for the Sevres porcelain factory. While Garneray's engravings of naval and whaling scenes were extremely popular, even in America, his greatest achievement was a series of views of the principal ports of France, Europe and the United States, supplemented by the elegant prose descriptions of M.E. Jouy, and published in Paris between 1823 and 1834. Vues des cores de France..., published in five volumes, is widely acclaimed as "a magnificent collection of views'' (Deak, vol. I, p. 291). The sparkling, handcolored aquatint engravings show the principal ports of France, including Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulon, Cannes and La Rochelle. Volume five contains forty views of foreign ports, including Constantinople, Gibraltar, Barcelona, Liverpool, Naples, New Orleans, Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore. Each print exhibits endless attention to detail, incorporating architectural landmarks, ships, weather conditions, animals, and costumed figures in the midst of daily activities. Garneray makes superb use of the aquatint medium, which enables subtle variations in tone and reproduces the look and feel of watercolor more successfully than any other method of engraving. Several of Garneray's original watercolors of naval battles can be found in the collection of the New York Historical Society.. Book.
