(Argentina). C., F. M
[At the foot of the text:] Buenos Aires: Imprenta de Alvarez, [1822]. [At the foot of the text:] Buenos Aires:: Imprenta de Alvarez,, [1822].. First edition.. A few light old folds, some soiling on the verso, a few small spots; a very good copy.. Single sheet folio handbill printed recto and verso, approx. 12.5 x 8 inches, untrimmed. Signed in type at the foot of the text F. M. C., this rare political piece dates from the secular anti-clerical reforms of Ravadiva's republican government, which managed to dissolve the religious orders and abolished the tithe. This handbill publishes an open letter dated July, 1822, supposedly from a respected priest outside of Buenos Aires, who here answers the published attacks of the various religious orders against the government reforms, noting that the clerical arguments are generally "a mass of insults directed against the authority; a seed of sedition, contrary to the spirit that should animate the ministers of worship" ("Las otras un cúmulo de dicterios, dirigidos contra la autoridad ; un germen de sedicion, contrario al espíritu que debe animar á los ministros del culto. . . ."), the whole piece tending to support the governmental reforms as a means to combat corruption. Small early ink autograph notation at the top margin, "1822." OCLC notes one location (RPB).

NEWTON, Sir Isaac
Glasgow: Andreae et Joannis M. Duncan. 1822. 4to. 4 vols bound in 2. Contemporary full brown calf, boards with gilt double fillet panels and acanthus and shell-motif blind rolls to borders, spines with gilt panels and red morocco gilt lettering pieces, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled; [4] + [vii]-xxx+ [2] + 431 + [1], [6] + 320, [4] + xxxvi + 344, [2] + vi + 202 + [2]; spines slightly sunned, occasional mild offsetting and foxing, one leaf with lower outer corner torn, otherwise very good in a handsome binding. Provenance: both volumes with inscription of James Gallichan, St John's College, Cambridge, to front flyleaf. Gallichan became the Chaplain of the Gaol, Poor House and Hospital in Jersey and died in 1859. First Glasgow printing of the 1739 Geneva "Jesuit" edition, so-called despite the non-participation of Jesuits; the two editors were Minim monks. This was a hugely influential reprint of the third edition of 1726, with commentary by the editors and Jean-Louis Calandrini, professor of mathematics and philosophy at the University of Geneva. This edition of the Principia became the most extensively used because of the brilliance of the notes, which are almost the same length as Newton's text and employ Leibnizian calculus, and ran through two more printings in 1760 and 1822. Brunet describes the Glasgow printing as particularly "belle et soignee, avec les figures inserees dans le texte". Babson 32; Brunet IV, 49.

United States Congress
Washington 1822 - Pamphlet 8vo, publishers printed wrappers, 151pp. Uncut and unopened, spine worn, foxed and toned, a bit tattered along one edge, and some folding at the edges. Important early journal of the workings of 17th Congress of the United States. Includes the particulars of the “Missouri Compromise”, which admitted Missouri as a slave state (pages 114-116). Also recorded are several acts relating to Florida, including Andrew Jackson’s proclamation taking possession of the territory, and the act setting up a territorial government and dividing the territory into East and West Florida. There are a variety of last dramatic items included in this journal, such as, reimbursement for a home burned down while it was occupied by U.S. soldiers, funding for lighthouses, and bounties for bring in prisoners. Additionally, there is some information on the workings of early Indian treaties. The Ottawa Nation was promised $1,000 a year for land ceded to the United States, and additional funds were to be provided for a blacksmith, a teacher and someone to train them in agriculture. It also seems that Indians would still be allowed to hunt on lands they sold to the government. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Panckoucke C.L.F. edit. &

London: G. & W.B. Whittaker, T. Cadell and N. Hailes, 1822. Oblong 4to. pp. ii, 3-64 + engraved title, dedication to George IV, 30 plates engraved by Neele and Son (Samuel John Neele and his son James), the final two plates left black and white, the rest supplied with original hand colour; original tissue guards, light offsetting from plates to text pages, errata slip at end. Publisher's half roan over marbled boards with printed publisher's label on the upper cover, a little rubbed and worn, rebacked. Bookbinder's ticket of Evans, Chegwin and Hall, Liverpool. Kanas notes that the overall design of this popular work is similar to Flamsteed/Fortin, but a key inspiration was the work of Johann Bode. Jamieson “included a number of constellations developed by Bode and appearing in his ‘Uranographia'... as well as the new constellation Noctua the owl”. However, Jamieson's atlas only included those stars which were visible to the naked eye, which made it appear less cluttered. Kanas Book
