United States Congress
Washington, 1822. Pamphlet 8vo, publishers printed wrappers, 151pp. Uncut and unopened, spine worn, foxed and toned, a bit tattered along one edge, and some folding at the edges. Important early journal of the workings of 17th Congress of the United States. Includes the particulars of the "Missouri Compromise", which admitted Missouri as a slave state (pages 114-116). Also recorded are several acts relating to Florida, including Andrew Jackson's proclamation taking possession of the territory, and the act setting up a territorial government and dividing the territory into East and West Florida. There are a variety of last dramatic items included in this journal, such as, reimbursement for a home burned down while it was occupied by U.S. soldiers, funding for lighthouses, and bounties for bring in prisoners. Additionally, there is some information on the workings of early Indian treaties. The Ottawa Nation was promised $1,000 a year for land ceded to the United States, and additional funds were to be provided for a blacksmith, a teacher and someone to train them in agriculture. It also seems that Indians would still be allowed to hunt on lands they sold to the government.

APULEIUS.
Triphook and Rodd. 1822. 8vo., sometime bound in half double gilt ruled brown morocco, lettered in gilt on spine with gilt rules and centre tools, all edges gilt. Pp. xxiv, 400 + [10] "Suppressed Passages". Some foxing to endpapers, a little occasional spotting, otherwise a very good copy. First edition of Thomas Taylor's translation of the only Latin novel to survive in its entirety. Also included is Apuleius on the God of Socrates, and Apuleius on the Habitude of the Doctrines of the Philosophy of Plato. Thomas Taylor (1758-1835) received an irregular education. As a young man he obtained a clerkship in Lubbock's Bank, but devoted himself to the translation and exposition of Plato, Aristotle, and the Neo-Platonists and Pythagoreans. In 1787 he began to publish translations of works of ancient philosophy, beginning with the earliest of Plotinus's Enneads (i.6), on the 'beautiful', and the 'Orphic hymns', this latter with a lengthy preface on the life and theology of Orpheus. Various of these translations were subsidized by patrons, for instance his translation of Aristotle's Metaphysics (1801) by the brothers William and George Meredith. However, his most notable early patron was Charles Howard, eleventh duke of Norfolk, who made it possible for Taylor to publish the first English translation of the complete works of Plato (1804), revising and completing the work begun by Floyer Sydenham (1710-1787), whom he had known in his latter years. It was through Taylor's translations that the Romantic poets had access to Platonism: they are probably one of the sources of Blake's my … [Click Below for Full Description]

OWEN, Samuel
[Drop title]. Folio, [4] pp, manuscript in ink on laid paper watermarked Charles Wise 1822 with Britannia surmounted by crown; signed at the foot of the third page by the Bellerophon's Commander, Samuel Owen; the list of prisoner profiles, set out in tabular form, contains Commander Owen's remarks on the conduct and demeanour of each of the boys, whose ages range from 16 to 18; the fourth page is endorsed 'Bellerophon'; contrary to the report's title, these boys were transported on the Lady East not to New South Wales but to Van Diemen's Land, arriving at Hobart Town on 9 April 1825; original folds, mild foxing, otherwise clean and legible. HMS Bellerophon, a famous ship which had played a conspicuous part in both the Battle of the Nile and the Battle of the Trafalgar, was used as a prison hulk for boys between 1823 and 1825. It was moored off Sheerness, a town located at the mouth of the River Medway in Kent. The Bellerophon accomodated around 60 boys between the ages of 9 and 18. As her layout meant there was no space for workshops, it was decided at the end of 1825 to transfer the boys to the Euryalus, a hulk which had been specially fitted for such a purpose. For each of the 18 boys listed in this report, Commander Samuel Owen supplies name, age, offence, place of conviction, occupation, remarks about conduct while under his supervision, and a gaoler's report on previous behaviour. It is at the same time a fascinating and depressing document, a starkly human eyewitness record of life on a prison hulk that is also an indictment of the British penal and class systems. Panckoucke C.L.F. edit. & Dutertre del. - Beaugean et Collin sc.

Trial; Buckingham, Joseph T, Defendant
, 1822. 1822. A Notable Nineteenth-Century Massachusetts Libel Trial [Trial]. Buckingham, Joseph T., Defendant. A Correct Statement and Review of the Trial of Joseph T. Buckingham for an Alleged Libel of the Rev. John N. Maffit, Before the Hon. Josiah Quincy, Judge of the Municipal Court, Dec. 6, 1822. Boston: Published by William S. Spear, 1822. 16 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet. Moderate toning, light foxing in a few places, minor chips and edgewear to a few leaves, early marks to margins next to a few passages. $450. * Only edition. One of the first accounts of a notable nineteenth-century Massachusetts libel trials. (It is the first of ten publications listed in Cohen.) "Joseph Buckingham, publisher of the New England Galaxy, was indicted on the charge of printing a libel on John Maffitt, a Methodist preacher (sometimes spelled Maffit). His defense was built on proving the truth of the alleged libel, and he was acquitted. Several works about the trial itself were published long after it took place; their intent was to damage Maffitt's reputation, as he was by then engaged in parochial conflicts. Maffitt's career was also a factor in a libel suit brought twenty-eight years later, in which his father-in-law, a judge, was sued by Maffitt's friend, the Reverend John C. Green.": Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 13280.
