(BAUDOUIN, Alexandre)
J. Appleyard. 1822 Half title. Uncut in orig. drab boards, marbled paper spine, paper label; spine rubbed. A nice copy in the original binding.First published in English in 1820 under the title A New Dictionary for the Fashionable World. First published in French in 1818. A book of alphabetical witticisms: "BOOKSELLER. A man who lives on the sense and wit of others; a speculator on the curiosity, but more frequently on the stupidity of the public. It may be said of an ignorant bookseller, that he lives amongst his books like an eunuch in the midst of a seraglio ... GOLD. A yellow metal, that causes men to be massacred, towns to be burned, citizens to be oppressed, and women to be overcome".

BROADSIDE REAL & SEVERE AFFLICTION]
[London] printed by W. Mitchell, 138, St. Martin's Lane. n.d. [ca. 182-: paper watermarked '1822']. broadside (32 x 20 cms.), with contemporary ms. additions (8 lines at foot), folded for posting and addressed on verso 'For the Right Honible George Canning*, M.P. &c. &c. &c.'> Probably very rare (not recorded by COPAC and not in BL on-line). A begging letter asking for charitable 'benefactions' for a distressed 'gentleman' who 'was regularly engaged for many years in a particular department of political literature'. Eventually he had become unemployed, suffered declining eyesight, had to meet increased expenses, and suffered from fits and inability to cope. The ms. additions at the foot list the names and addresses for the receipt of donations. * This broadside appeal is addressed to George Canning, who, in 1822, was Leader of the Commons in the Liverpool government and just about to be appointed Foreign Secretary on the death by suicide of Lord Castlereagh.

SOUMET (Alexandre). CLYTEMNESTRE. [Click Below for Full Description]
