Geoffrey Crayon [Washington Irving]
London-John Murray, 1822. Book. The first English edition of Irving's novel, in fine bindings. First UK Edition. Complete in two volumes. With the armorial bookplates of Lawrence W. Adamson to the front pastedowns. This episodic novel was originally published under his pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon. As this is a location-based series of character sketches, there are a number of individual plots. The tales centre on the occupants of an English manor (based on Aston Hall, near Birmingham, England, which was occupied by members of the Bracebridge family and which Irving visited). Each chapter documents the story of a different character. Condition: In full diced calf bindings. Externally, generally smart, some rubbing to the extremities and marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Some foxing to the first and last few pages but otherwise generally clean with some scattered spots. Overall: VERY GOOD. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Lockwood, F. & R.
F. & R. Lockwood New York 1822 First Edition. Book Folio Unbound Good+ condition What is offered is the map portion only of the first American board game. Engraved map, hand-colored; measures 28.2x38.2 cm (approximately 11x15"). The map has been backed on board, the entirety is lightly to moderately browned and faded, there are several tears at the edge without loss, and there are two stains. This map is a whole sheet, which is unlike the three copies found on Worldcat/OCLC, which are instead cut into sections and backed in linen for storage in the slipcase. The map contains 139 numbered unnamed stops, to which according to the teetotum a player would advance, name the numbered city, state the population of the city or be penalized. Not present is the teetotum (a spinning top marked with numbers), game tokens called "traveller's" tokens, the letterpress text sheet, and the slipcase. This is a rare map, and shows two numbered stops in Michigan Territory, the North West Territory and Arkansas Territory but there is no number for Chicago! Map only.

Yarmouth: printed for J. Barnes for the Author; and sold by Cattermole, Beccles ... 1822 A few words, intentionally incomplete in print, completed in contemporary ms. Orig. printed buff wrappers; at some point bound in a larger volume but still a remarkably well preserved copy. In custom made green cloth fold-over case. Not in BL; Oxford only on Copac; no copies on OCLC. A humorous jaunt in verse in homage to the drinking establishments of Great Yarmouth: 'One day as Sigma with his friends was drinking, As mostly is the case the man was thinking; And tipsy folks have notions in their head, By malt and hops, and whiles by wisdom bred ...' The owner of this copy, evidently a resident of Great Yarmouth, has filled in some of the blanks deliberately left by the author:'Here comes the White Hart Coach! see what a load Of passengers, from off the Norwich Road! Speed to the Hart, and to the Coach also, Success to M[arti]n, S[mit]h, and W[arre]n too ... Come, come my cock, and take a glass of wine, M[ac] E[wa]n at the Wrestler's has it fine'. The tour, exploring the public-houses North of New-Street, was intended as the first part of two, the second part, advertised on the final page, was to be a tour of those South of New-Street. Fourier, Charles.
1822. 8vo. 3 vols. LXIV, 592 pp. VIII, 648 pp. (2), 8, 8B-8E, 9-16, (1329)-1398, B1398-1398E, 1399-1448, (1) pp. Contemporary green half calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt lettering, corners, gilt fillets on sides (some very light browning, first four leaves of the second work with a dampstain in the lower outer blank corner). First editions of Fourier's principal work, together with the very rare supplement. The first volume is signed by Fourier on verso of the half title. This is Fourier's most important work, containing "the essence of Fourier's doctrine" (D. O. Evans, Social Romanticism in France 1830-1848, p. 129.) The main thesis of the work is the discovery of "harmonie": the entire work endeavors to prove how this harmony can be established and how life and society should be designed so as to ensure success. In an attempt to garner further attention for his ideas, he published the "Sommaire du traité" in 1823, a supplement often lacking. Indeed, the work went virtually unnoticed. Although Fourier is often seen as a dreamer and fantasist, he anticipated Marx in many of his ideas: the theory of poverty and exploitation and their relation to the means of production can already be found with him, and the Marxist concept of the "all-round man" is an idea on which Fourier elaborately worked and which is the most important result of his "harmonie". Fourier was "emphatically a serious social thinker who contributed much of permanent value, not only to socialist and co-operative ideas, but also to the solution of the entire problem of work and of the incentives and human … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Trial; Buckingham, Joseph T, Defendant
1822. A Notable Nineteenth-Century Massachusetts Libel Trial [Trial]. Buckingham, Joseph T., Defendant. A Correct Statement and Review of the Trial of Joseph T. Buckingham for an Alleged Libel of the Rev. John N. Maffit, Before the Hon. Josiah Quincy, Judge of the Municipal Court, Dec. 6, 1822. Boston: Published by William S. Spear, 1822. 16 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet. Moderate toning, light foxing in a few places, minor chips and edgewear to a few leaves, early marks to margins next to a few passages. $450. * Only edition. One of the first accounts of a notable nineteenth-century Massachusetts libel trials. (It is the first of ten publications listed in Cohen.) "Joseph Buckingham, publisher of the New England Galaxy, was indicted on the charge of printing a libel on John Maffitt, a Methodist preacher (sometimes spelled Maffit). His defense was built on proving the truth of the alleged libel, and he was acquitted. Several works about the trial itself were published long after it took place; their intent was to damage Maffitt's reputation, as he was by then engaged in parochial conflicts. Maffitt's career was also a factor in a libel suit brought twenty-eight years later, in which his father-in-law, a judge, was sued by Maffitt's friend, the Reverend John C. Green.": Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 13280.

WADDINGTON, George; Rev. Barnard Hanbury.
London John Murray, 1822. First edition. 4to., vi, 333pp., 16 lithographed plates, one folding, 2 engraved folding maps, contemporary half calf gilt, an excellent example. Waddington and Hanbury, both Cambridge fellows, decided to embark on an antiquarian tour of Egypt. They were received by the Governor, Mohammed Ali, who gave them permission to travel into Upper Egypt. Dressed as Turks and accompanied by an Irishman, James Curtin, two Maltese, and a setter dog named Anubis, they ascended the Nile as far as Meroe. Whilst there they encountered the American traveller George English, and at Wadi Haifa met the French mineralogist Frederic Cailliaud, both of whom were described in offensive terms by Waddington who had little time for Westerners who appeared to have "turned native."
