Miguel de Burgos. 8vo (162 x 105 mm). 103 pp. Encuadernación en media piel con nervios y tejuelos en lomo. 6,000 $ First edition, translated from a manuscript by Father Thomas Gough (Sabin). “In 1810, these American settlers in West Florida rebelled, declaring independence from Spain. The United States asserted that the portion of West Florida from the Mississippi to the Perdido rivers was part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Negotiations over Florida began in earnest with the mission of Don Luis de Onís to Washington in 1815 to meet Secretary of State James Monroe Adams used the Jackson’s military action to present Spain with a demand to either control the inhabitants of East Florida or cede it to the United States. Minister Onís and Secretary Adams reached an agreement whereby Spain ceded East Florida to the United States and renounced all claim to West Florida. Spain received no compensation, but the United States agreed to assume liability for $5 million in damage done by American citizens who rebelled against Spain. Under the Onís-Adams Treaty of 1819 (also called the Transcontinental Treaty and ratified in 1821) the United States and Spain defined the western limits of the L … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boston, octavo, two separate volumes: [xii, 1-480; [ii], 481-818, [1] p., hand-colored geologic map of the United States and 5 copper-engraved plates of crystal drawings]. ***CONTENT: With the exception of Maclure's "Observations on the Geology of the United States" (1817), Cleaveland's "Elementary Treatise" was the most important early American geological publication. As the author notes in the preface, compared to his first edition (1816), this second edition is enlarged by 152 pages, incorporates descriptions of newly discovered minerals and localities, adds an appendix on "meteoric stones", and "[adds] more numerous, extended and accurate observations" on American mineralogy. Chapters treat crystallography, physical and optical properties, chemical characteristics, the systematic arrangement of minerals, nomenclature, a vocabulary of mineral terms, rocks and geological processes, and more. More than 600 pages are devoted to specific mineral descriptions, with locality data. The splendid colored map, extending from the Atlantic to Texas, was the most important American geological map issued after those of Maclure. The map contains great watershed detail and employs hand coloring to delineate five or six geologic units. This book was one of the most highly acclaimed and widely used reference works in the early 19th century. ***CONDITION: This is a VG+ set in contemporary polished tree-calf, rebacked in later brown cloth with the contemporary gilt-lettered red leather spine labels laid down. Save for moderate wear to the boards, the covers are … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bottom corner of first leaf trimmed, affecting no text, modest foxing, small later clipping tipped-in (disputing the claim that Roulstone had actually created the verse "Mary Had a Little Lamb" at the age of 10, a claim also disputed by the attributed author, Sarah Hale), overall very good. There seems to be some reason to believe that Roulstone wrote at least a part of the poem. OCLC locates eight copies; two in London, all of the others in New England.

[Forsyth, John; Onis, Luis de] [Florida & Texas].
First edition, translated from a manuscript by Father Thomas Gough (Sabin). "In 1810, these American settlers in West Florida rebelled, declaring independence from Spain. President James Madison and Congress used the incident to claim the region, knowing full well that the Spanish government was seriously weakened by Napoleon's invasion of Spain. The United States asserted that the portion of West Florida from the Mississippi to the Perdido rivers was part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Negotiations over Florida began in earnest with the mission of Don Luis de Onís to Washington in 1815 to meet Secretary of State James Monroe... Adams used the Jackson's military action to present Spain with a demand to either control the inhabitants of East Florida or cede it to the United States. Minister Onís and Secretary Adams reached an agreement whereby Spain ceded East Florida to the United States and renounced all claim to West Florida. Spain received no compensation, but the United States agreed to assume liability for $5 million in damage done by American citizens who rebelled against Spain. Under the Onís-Adams Treaty of 1819 (also called the Transcontinental Treaty and ratified in 1821) the United States and Spain defined the western limits of the Louisiana Purchase and Spain surrendered its claims to the Pacific Northwest. In return, the United States recognized Spanish sovereignty over Texas." 1822. Antique print, titled: 'Carte Reduite de la Mer Noire [ ].' - A chart of the Black Sea, in between Romania, Ukraine, Georgia and Turkey. This includes the Sea of Azov and Crimean peninsula. Numerous places along the coast are named, as well as depth soundings and the route of the survey ships. Published by the Depot de la Marine, based on the survey of Captain Gauttier in 1820. These type of charts are scarse as they were actually used at sea for navigation. Engraving on wove paper. Made by 'E. Collin' after 'Depot de la Marine'. Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine (1720 - present), often called the Depot de Marine, was a French hydrographic mapping organization founded in 1720. Much like the U.S. Coast Survey, the British Admiralty, and the Spanish Deposito Hydrografico, the Depot was initiated as a storehouse and distribution center of existing nautical and marine charts. Eventually the Depot initiated its on mapping activities in an attempt to improve and expand upon existing material. Some of the well known hydrograhers / cartographers in the development of Depot were Jacques Nicholas Bellin and Rigobert Bonne. Good, given age. Loosely attached to (modern cardstock) carrier, will ship w/o carrier. Sheet browned overall, and with five vertical brown bands across the image. Some minimal paper loss in the left margin (not affecting image). A small tear in the top margin. A few stains in the right margin and right image edge.
