Henry Charles Carey & Isaac Lea
This hand-colored map engraving was part of the atlas titled A Complete Historical, Chronological, and Geographical American Atlas, being A Guide to the History of North and South America, and the West Indies: Exhibiting an Accurate Account of the Discovery, Settlement, and Progress of their Various Kingdoms, States, Provinces, &c. together with the Wars, Celebrated Battles, and Remarkable Events, to the Year 1822. It is considered an indispensable American atlas and represented the beginning of the hand-colored commercial atlas business in the United States. It was particularly noted for its early maps of the states and territories of the United States. Of particular note was Stephen H. Long's map of Arkansa(s) (the American West) as it showed the trans-Mississippi West and the lands of the Louisana Purchase. --- Overall Excellent. AMBERT Lieutenant-General Jean-Jacques
First edition. 8vo. Recent quarter morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt, errata slip laid down on last page. 58pp. Paris, Imprimerie de Guiraudet, A very good copy of this scarce work by Jean-Jacques Ambert (1765-1851), a French naval officer who saw action in both the American and French Revolutionary wars. He later served as military governor of Guadeloupe, though was recalled in 1808 after an outbreak of civil unrest. He remained active and interested in the island, and in this 1822 pamphlet, he responds to a speech given in 1821 by Jacques Claude Beugnot, which he considers detrimental to the interests of the colonies. As ever, the work focuses on the sugar industry and Ambert cites relevant import and export figures in Havana and Brazil by way of comparison with Martinique and Guadeloupe. He broadens the remit of the discussion and complains of the dominance of the English empire with its colonies in New South Wales, New Zealand, Hawaii, Tahiti and the Cape of Good Hope. He also takes aim at Spain's colonial outposts in Peru and Chile. The work provides much insight into the competing factions and debates in France, which mirrors the similar struggle that English abolitionists faced with their own colonies in the West Indies. In 1847, Ambert was appointed president of the its Colonial Council, whose purpose he declared ?should be a double action of enlightening the authorities and directing public opinion.? On July 10 the same year, he reported to the King that Guadeloupe was ?prepared to advance with France 'down the path of emancipation' if this were accompanied b … [Click Below for Full Description]

Highmore, Anthony
Published by George Lamson, J.J. Williams Printer, Exeter, N.H, 1822. 8vo. x, [2], 194 pp. Contemporary American quarter sheep over drab boards, smooth spine, green lettering piece. Trifle rubbed, minor foxing here and there; overall a very nice copy. Pasted inside the front cover is a small slip of paper on which has been written: "Dr. Edwd. Gillespie. / Comp. F.W. Putnam July 1929." So important is this text, and so scarce are first editions of it, that no less than two facsimile reprints have been published. Highmore's "Treatise" is one of the earliest legal works on insanity and the law. Written by an English barrister, the text examines an unusually broad array of legal cases involving persons who are mentally impaired, or who profess to have been temporarily insane. There are legal definitions of "ideot" (sic), non compos mentis, and lunacy, as well as legal disputations on the custody of lunatics; commission of the insane to hospitals or asylums; Habeas Corpus; disability and recovery of lunatics; regulations of asylums; criminal cases involving the insane. This first American edition has a 27-page Appendix with valuable information on the insanity plea and the American criminal justice system at that time. The Appendix replaced that of the 1807 English edition which related to the English courts exclusively. Anthony Highmore (1758-1829) was an advocate of social justice and an abolitionist; he was a great supporter of charities and hospitals for the poor. For the two facsimile reprints: Lawbook Exchange in 2007 (reprinting the first American edition) and Gale's Maki … [Click Below for Full Description]

ALKEN, Henry (1785-1851)
Thomas M'Lean, London, 1822. 16pp. 6 hand-colored aquatint plates. Later red morocco, by Riviere & Son, covers panelled in gilt, upper cover lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. Neat repairs to hinges. Lovely English colour plate sporting book. Accompanied by a narrative in verse, the plates illustrate a six-day shooting trip in idyllically rural Suffolk. Peter Pop, the son of a pawnbroker, and his friend and neighbour Sam Slop, prove a danger to the peace. Popping their guns in every direction except the right one, they hit men, women and dogs, but never birds. On the last day, as illustated on the final plate, a justice orders them to pay an enormous fine and never touch guns again. These plates show Alken at his best: a master in control of his medium. The fine plates have humour, offer an insightful glimpse into the near-forgotten fashionable world of the 1820s and illustrate why Alken is considered one of the great sporting artists of all time. Tooley 22; Schwerdt I, p.12; Abbey Life 382; Mellon/Snelgrove p.48. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Good antique condition with some fading watermarks. An elegant early 19th century five panel french historic scenic wallpaper depicted in the Odile Nouvel catalogue raisonné, titled as "Les Incas" depicting the Pizarro and his comrades disembark and Inca family near their tent next to an indian corn plant. Edition of Joseph Dufour & Leroy circa 1822. Acquired at Sotheby's New York. Sale 6744 1995 lot 54. The catalogue raisonné In 1904, the brothers Paul and Andre Carlhian took over the Carlhian-Baumetz Company, a firm of auctioneers. In 1907, the Dauveen brothers, prestigious art dealers with showrooms in London, New York, and Paris, asked the Carlhian brothers to become involved in decoration, on the assumption that a painting by a French master could only be hung in a French-inspired setting. Working with architect, Rene Sergent, the Carlhian brothers found this new direction to be a success. At their premises on the Rue du Mont-Thabor, Paul and Andre Carlhian began to accumulate an important stock of paneling, chairs, fabrics, and so on. Andre Carlhian soon acquired the reputation of being one of the top experts in scenic wallpapers. The Carlhian firm's documentation of scenic wallpapers is currently the most complete in existence, containing more than 500 photographs, complied in the catalogue raisonné edited by Odile Nouvel-Kammerer. The catalogue identifies the piece offered in this listing. The pictures of the compilation and pictures of the complete length wallpaper is shown in the images included in this listing. Bewick, Thomas
Newcastle: Printed for Emerson Charnley by S. Hodgson. 5 volume set. 1822 edition of the Works of Bewick. No. 11 of 150 "Royal" copies with "thumbprint" leaf bound into the Fables of Aesop (dated Jan. 1, 1824, with handcolored seaweed and hawthorne leaf, and numbered and priced in ink. All volumes have the Charnley 1822 title page as well as a secondary title page for each volume, with the Quadrupeds title page dated 1824 and Aesop's dated 1823. The Quadrupeds features as its frontispiece the large woodcut of a lion commissioned especially for this edition and only seen in the Royal and Imperial editions. Tattersfield, in his bibliography of Bewick, states that only 150 of the Royal-sized editions were published, at least 80 of which were remaindered and sold to Bohn many years later and issued without the thumbprint leaf; thus, this is likely one of only 70 such sets. Royal 8vo, bound in full dark green leather gilt, all edges gilded, old bookplate in each volume, coated yellow endpapers, contents fine, minor rubbing to edges and joints else fine bindings; the rear board of Quadrupeds shows some neat japanese paper reinforcement to both the inner hinge and outer joint. See Tattersfield p. 69-70 (TB 1.36 & TB 1.37) for a more thorough exposition of this set. Digital images available upon request. Near Fine / No Jacket.
