Gardel (1758-1840) was an important dancer, choreographer, and teacher; among his pupils was Carlo Blasis, who based his famous Code on Gardel's teachings. "As a choreographer, Pierre Gardel demonstrated 'as much imagination as taste,' according to Noverre, who added, 'His compositions were brilliantly successful, and (something quite rare) they have retained the charms and freshness of their first youth.' His musical knowledge complemented his mastery of the steps and determined their harmony... The present volume was reviewed by The Gentleman's Magazine as "a pleasing and useful assistant to the young student, affording much instruction in all departments of the art; with a short sketch of the various merits of many of the Old Masters, and most of the eminent modern ones". At the time this book was published miniature painting was considered an important accomplishment for young upper-class women, a demonstration of moral virtues and elevated aesthetic sensibilities. Münich: Lentner, [1822?]. First edition, the rare offprint issue, of the first quantitative discussion of the diffraction of light. Four years earlier, Fraunhofer had published his epochal discovery of dark lines in the solar spectrum, now called 'Fraunhofer lines,' which inaugurated the fields of spectroscopy and astrophysics. "In 1821 and 1823, shortly after Fresnel's studies of interference phenomena had received general attention, Fraunhofer published two papers in which he observed and analyzed certain diffraction phenomena and interpreted them in terms of a wave theory of light. In the 1821 paper [offered here] he discussed his examination of the spectra resulting from light diffracted through a single narrow slit and quantitatively related the width of the slit to the angles of dispersion of the different orders of spectra. Extending his observations to diffraction resulting from a large number of slits, he constructed a grating with 260 parallel wires. Although David Rittenhouse and Thomas Young had previously noted some effects of crude diffraction gratings, Fraunhofer made the first quantitative study of the phenomena. The presence of the solar dark lines enabled him to note that the dispersion of the spectra was greater with his grating than with his prism. Hence, he examined the relationship between dispersion and the separation of wires in the grating. Utilizing the dark lines as bench marks in the spectrum for his dispersion determinations, he concluded that the dispersion was inversely related to the distance between successive slits in the grating. From the … [Click Below for Full Description]

An uncommon catalogue. Miles (1774-1845), "typifies the new class of merchant, having made his money financing the building of railways and of the Avonmouth docks. Miles bought Leigh Court, near Bristol, for which he assembled an extraordinary collection of works attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, Correggio, the Carracci, Guercino, Van Dyck and a Giorgione now in the National Gallery, London, but his fame rests on the purchase of the Altieri Claudes from the Beckford collection. The pictures were later ruined by inept cleaning and by the time the American oil tycoon Lord Fairhaven bought them for Anglesey Abbey in 1947, they were only a shadow of the pictures that had caused such a stir when Beckford brought them to England."-Stourton & Sebag-Montefiore, The British as Art Collectors, p. 163. The collection of paintings was dispersed in two sales in 1884 and 1899.John Young (1755-1825), a skilled engraver who executed the present work's illustrations, was entrusted with the cataloguing of several other significant collections, including those of Robert Grosvenor, 2nd Earl Grosvenor; John Julius Angerstein; Sir John Fleming Leicester; and Lord Stafford. The 81 paintings are all illustrated on the plates.Very good copy, with prices, names of buyers, and, for some, extensive notes. Sabin 20413 “Highly eulogized by Coleridge, Southey, Charles Lamb, Lowndes, and Brunet. It is almost the only work relating to this almost unknown tribe of Indians, and is a memorial of nearly eighteen years of suffering and toil amongst a most savage race.” Moraes vol. 1., pp.228.'The work was held in high regard by Southey, who made much use of it. Brunet claims that the English translation was made by ‘Miss Southey'. He is mistaken, the translation was incontestably made by Sarah Coleridge (see Maggs, Voy. & Tr. volume 5-822). Sara Coleridge's translation was judged by Samuel Coleridge to be ‘unsurpassed for pure[?] mother English by anything I have read for a long time.' The author went as a missionary to South America where for eleven years he worked in the Guarany Reductions before spending seven years in the four colonies of the Abipones. Giving many details of their 'manners, customs, superstitions, military discipline, slaughters inflicted and received, political and economical regulations, together with the vicissitudes of the recent colonies...' He frequently takes occasion to refute and expose the erroneous statements of other writers respecting the Jesuits in Paraguay. Additional postage may be necessary US$572

Luigi ROSSINI (Ravenna 1790 - Roma 1875)
[Click Below for Full Description]

PHOTOGRAPHS SENT ON REQUEST. First Edition, extracted from The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1822 - Part II. Pp. 273-270. quarto, disbound, a very good copy, London, The Royal Society, 1822. First appearance of a founding paper in the science of alloys. "Beyond his work in analytical and pure chemistry, Faraday showed himself to be a pioneer in the application of chemistry to problems of technology. In 1818, together with James Stodart, a cutler, he began a series of experiments on the alloys of steel. Although he was able to produce alloys of superior quality, they were not capable of commercial production because they required the use of such rare metals as platinum, rhodium, and silver. Nevertheless, Faraday demonstrated that the increasingly urgent problem of producing higher-grade steel could be attacked by science. The later work on steel of Henry Sorby, Henry Bessemer, and Robert A. Hadfield was based directly on Faraday's work in the early part of the century." (DSB IV, p. 531-532). It was published in 1769 by William Falconer, author of the classic poem, "The Shipwreck." Falconer was drowned later that year in the sinking of the frigate H.M.S. "Aurora." The "Treatise of Naval Affairs" quotes heavily (without giving credit) from Falconer's "Dictionary" which was reprinted in 1771, 1780 ("A New Edition, Corrected" by Thomas Cadell, London), 1784, 1805, and 1815 (revised). While there were 12 engraved plates in Falconer's "Dictionary," many referred to in the "Treatise," none are illustrated.
