        Ocios sobre Bellas-Artes.

Madrid, Imprenta de D. León Amarita, 1822. - 6 parties en 1 volume in-12. 2ff. 16pp. (i.e.17). + 31pp. + 16pp. + 1f. 25pp. + 23pp. + 1f. 18pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Three complete sets of horse studies and two single plates.] Etudes de chevaux après nature. Paris, Gihaut, [1822-1823].

1822. Folio (368 x 272 mm). 30 lithogr. plates, including one title page. Bound in contemp. oblong red half morocco, spine bearing giltstamped title "Chevaux et Voitures". Three series of Gericault's horse studies, each complete as published and in excellent impressions on strong wove paper (not watermarked), bound together with a hitherto unrecorded depiction of a sheikh on an Arabian horse. The first series, published as "Etudes de Chevaux lithographiés" in 1822, shows various horse races, including the Arabian horse as well as Egyptian, English, and French horses. Second of at least four states throughout, stating the names of the artist and printer. The second series, published without a title in 1823, shows the various purposes for which horses are used (racehorses, military horses, cart horses and postillon horses, among others) and is complete as well with eight prints. The third series, likewise issued without a title in 1823, comprises seven prints depicting cavalry, trotters, a horse leaping over an obstacle, and a jockey on his horse, also including two oriental-themed plates: a lion devouring a horse and a fist-shaking "Giaour" (not from Géricault's Byron series). Three plates from this set are identified by Delteils as contemporary copies by Louis Courtin. The lithographed frontispiece of the first series was bound at the beginning of the present volume to serve as a title. The final leaves in this collection are the dead horse in the snow (an image inspired by Napoleon's Russian campaign) from Géricault's 1823 series "Quatre sujects divers" and a fine plate of a pistol-wielding Sheikh mounted on his Arabian steed, with an oriental desert settlement in the background (not recorded by Delteil). - Of the utmost rarity: while the British Museum holds the complete suite of the first series, we were unable to trace any complete copies of the other suites contained in this sammelband. While numerous separate Gericault lithographs sold at recent auctions, realising up to £3000 each, not a single complete suite is listed in auction records of the last decades. - All prints are of exceptional quality, with rich contrast on superior paper, occasionally showing various degrees of foxing in the margins; a minute tear to the lower edge of the title leaf. Attractively bound in red half morocco with sparsely gilt spine. Altogether a beautiful copy in excellent, crisp condition. Delteil 46-57; 58-65; 66-72; 77.

The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. Comprehending An Account of His Studies and Numerous Works, in Chronological Order; A Series of His Epistolary Correspondence and Conversations with Many Eminent Persons ...

Printed for T. Cadell;, 1822. Four volumes, complete Quarto Extra illustrated with over 400 plates and autographs, including Johnson's signature affixed by frontispiece portrait of him; also with two autographs, Mrs. Piozzi (H. L. Thrale) and Mrs. Elizabeth Carter, both of whom were contemporaries of Johnson three-quarter levant green morocco over green cloth, spine with raised bands, extra gilt, lettered in gilt, top edges gilt others untrimmed, marbled endpapers, by Bayntun The volumes include a chronological catalouge of Johnson's works, each entry with a brief description. Samuel Johnson (18 September 1709 [O.S. 7 September] - 13 December 1784), often referred to as Dr. Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and committed Tory, and has been described as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history".[1] He is also the subject of "the most famous single biographical work in the whole of literature," James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson. Born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, Johnson attended Pembroke College, Oxford for just over a year, before his lack of funds forced him to leave. After working as a teacher, he moved to London, where he began to write for The Gentleman's Magazine. His early works include the biography Life of Mr Richard Savage, the poems London and The Vanity of Human Wishes, and the play Irene. After nine years of work, Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language was published in 1755. It had a far-reaching effect on Modern English and has been described as "one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship". This work brought Johnson popularity and success. Until the completion of the Oxford English Dictionary 150 years later, Johnson's was viewed as the pre-eminent British dictionary. His later works included essays, an influential annotated edition of The Plays of William Shakespeare, and the widely read tale The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia. In 1763, he befriended James Boswell, with whom he later travelled to Scotland; Johnson described their travels in A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. Towards the end of his life, he produced the massive and influential Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, a collection of biographies and evaluations of 17th- and 18th-century poets. Johnson was a tall and robust man. His odd gestures and tics were disconcerting to some on first meeting him. Boswell's Life, along with other biographies, documented Johnson's behaviour and mannerisms in such detail that they have informed the posthumous diagnosis of Tourette syndrome, a condition not defined or diagnosed in the 18th century. After a series of illnesses, he died on the evening of 13 December 1784, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. In the years following his death, Johnson began to be recognised as having had a lasting effect on literary criticism, and he was claimed by some to be the only truly great critic of English literature Minimal rubbing of covers, interiors fine

1822. 4to. 1¾ pp. Bifolium with integral address panel. He called the essential agent of animal magnetism `telluric power`, associating animal magnetism with a generalized force. In this lengthy and important work, he describes mineral, vegetable, and animal magnetism, attempting to provide a foundation in physics for animal magnetic phenomena. Kieser says that sleep is a general expression of magnetic life and that somnambulism is a natural product of the application of animal magnetic techniques. In describing magnetic healing, he places some emphasis on the power of belief as supplementary to the healing power of animal magnetism itself. The second volume contains a history of animal magnetism and a good bibliography" (Crabtree 310). - Etwas berieben und leicht bestoßen.

Tyranny Unmasked Only Edition Washington City, 1822

1822. An Important Southern Voice in the Political Debates That Followed the War of 1812 Taylor, John, Of Caroline [1753-1824]. Tyranny Unmasked. Washington City [DC]: Printed and Published by Davis and Force, 1822. 349 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5"). Recent period-style calf, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine, endpapers renewed. Moderate toning, light foxing in places, a few leaves have faint markings in pencil, two very faint tiny marks in pen to title page ("45549" and "c"). A handsome copy. * Only edition. Taylor's work is an essential part of the political and intellectual history of the South, especially Southern constitutional theories used to justify secession. Tyranny Unmasked expands his theories of society, government and the U.S. Constitution introduced in An Inquiry Into the Principles and Policy of the Government of the United States (1814) and expanded in Construction Construed (1820). Tyranny Unmasked discusses the effect of the Constitution on social policies, particularly taxation, banking, tariffs, protectionism and currency. Along with many other Southerners, Taylor feared centralized national government. He believed it would corrupt the virtue of the American people and upset the proper constitutional balance between state and federal authority. Sabin, A Dictionary of Books Relating to America 94495.         [Binding title:] Panorama von Neapel.[Naples, ca. 1822-1830]. With 24 gouaches on parchment, made by an artist working in Naples, mounted in an album in passepartouts. Near contemporary (?) embossed brown morocco (14.5 x 11 cm).

Cf. Collection of 24 watercolours showing Naples, including its surroundings, and Pompeii. Before the invention of photography, small paintings such as these were very popular with the many tourists visiting Naples, including young aristocrats making a grand tour. These views were manufactured in large numbers from ready models, by artists working in the workshops near the port in Naples. Many of them worked in the style of the School of Posilippo, who in their vedute combined the traditions of Dutch 17th-century landscape painting with the free brushwork of 18th-century Venice. As the largest city in Italy, Naples was an important stop for travellers on the 18th-century Grand Tour. This became even more so after the excavations in Pompeii began in earnest in the second half of the 18th century. Visitors to the capital of the Kingdom of the Two-Sicilies, collected images of the many highlights of their trip. In the present album this includes the market square (modern Piazza Dante), views of the bay, the palace of Casserta and the highlights of Pompeii, including the Temple of Isis. Two views show the eruption of Vesuvius in October 1822. Slightly foxed, with some discolouring of several images near the edges. An attractive album in good condition.

ROMAN ANTIQUITIES The series of views Antichità Romane, made of 101 plates, was realized with the proceeds of the sale of the plates used for Raccolta di cinquanta principali vedute di antichità tratte dai scavi fatti in Roma in questi ultimi tempi divided in 40 views, published in 1817. This is the work with which the artist wanted to become one of the most important artists in the Roman cultural life; we can state that if we consider the size of the work and the subject he choose. In this work Rossini tested himself with his predecessor, G. B. Piranesi, who was considered as a point of reference when it came to ancient views and originality. Rossini, was deeply influenced by Piranesi, as it can be seen in the title, the legends, the same points of views and framing. Another important element he took from Piranesi is the use of light and the contrast of chiaroscuro. In these plates Rossini reached the higher mastery of the technique, realizing also extremely particular framings and a new and complex organization of the space. In the plates quite common is the diagonal view of the subject, which gave him the possibility to elaborate more the chiaroscuro. However, since the work is made of many plates, it is quite discontinuous and some of the plates present some indecision in the perspective formulation and a little harshness in the mark. Always following the tradition of his time, Rossini's choice of the subjects does not present any kind of originality; he actually depicted all the main archaeological sites and monuments of Rome. The sole novelty is represented by the precise record of the excavation works and analysis. Quite interesting, from a documental point of view, are the last four engravings depicting the destruction of the Basilica of St. Paul outside the wall, after the fire of July the 15th, 1823. The will to give life to his views, the reinstatement of the monuments to their historic context and the fact that he was not good with figures, brought Rossini to start a partnership with Bartolomeo Pinelli, Roman engraver and costume illustrator of daily life. He was the one who realized the figures of Rossini's views. Sometimes Pinelli took the subjects from his previous collection Costumi pittoreschi romani. Roma Rome Luigi Rossini incisore. Roma 540 400
