Arago was the artist of the expedition, which visited Western Australia, Timor, Hawaii, and New South Wales. The original ship was wrecked off the Falkland Islands. Two months later the expedition continued aboard the Physicienne, which stopped for a time at Rio de Janeiro. Captain Freycinet's wife, Rose Pinon, was smuggled on board at the advent of the voyage and made the complete journey, causing some discord among the crew. Freycinet named an island he discovered after her - Rose Island among the Samoa islands." (Hill 28-9). "The Hawaiian portion of the text, contained on more than 150 pages, records impressions of the artist's stops on Hawaii, Maui, and Oahu. Extensive portions of the text also record the Arago impressions of Australia, Guam, and the Marianas Islands. The artist's main interest (as reflected by the plate subjects) are of peoples encountered. Several of the plates record somewhat gruesome aspects of Hawaiian culture" (Forbes 537).         Manuscript Letter of Virginia Slave Owner Barred from Taking Slaves to Ohio.

12 April 1822., Culpepper County Virginia: - Folded letter sheet, 1pp., signed. Some creasing and edgewear, normal aging and toning; otherwise very good. William Ramlin Withers (c1756-1834) was a Revolutionary War soldier that enlisted as a sergeant, but would be promoted to Lieutenant. In 1782 he returned to Virginia with a leg injury that seems to have left him lame for the rest of his life. It is unclear how he was injured. The letter is to a Mr. Sawyer of Frankford, Kentucky. The address can be seen faintly on the overleaf. Withers who was in his sixties when he wrote this letter was trying to sell some land he was given in Ohio. However, because he was "old a very infirm man" he needed his slaves to take care of him. Since slaves were not allowed in Ohio, Withers was forced to sell the land, which he offered to Sawyer. He offered the land for one dollar per acre, he also indicated "I will take part payment, four or five young horses at a fair price. "Withers had a somewhat colorful life, and after serving in the military he was also a sheriff and had four children. Somehow he ended up in debt, and even had his ex-wife suing him for unpaid alimony. As far as his slaves were concerned it appears he gave two to his son, and the others were sold to pay off his debts. Information on Withers can be found on various Revolutionary war websites, and from some local records supplied by a previous owner.

Dissertatio Inauguralis Physiologica sistens Commentarii de Phoronomia Animalium. Decano et Promotore A.Fr.Jos. Carolo Mayer.

Bonnae, Typis C.F. Thormanni, Decembris 1822, Kl.4, 44 pp., 1 Bl., 1 gefalt. lith. Tafel., OBrosch leicht wasserfleckig! Extrem Selten!

        Italian decorated Ketubah.

Ancona Italy 1822 - Illuminated and hand-written on parchment, calligraphic text in black ink within a wide-bordered water-colour depicting flowers and two large birds in the upper margin; some marginal defects, small tears, 62.5 x 43.2 cm. Mounted. An attractive example of a traditional Jewish marriage contract, fully manuscript and elegantly decorated with fine colours. An attractive example of a traditional Jewish marriage contract, fully manuscript and elegantly decorated with fine colours. This Ketubah was made for the Loni – Duranti wedding, celebrated on Sunday, the eve of the Jewish holiday Sukkot (14th of the month of Tishrey), year 5583 of the Jewish calendar (1822). Ancona is known to be one of the most prolific centres of Ketubah decoration in Italy. Jews started settling there around the end of the 10th century and by the mid 14th century they had become prosperous as an organised community, involved in the lending and banking businesses. After the city had fallen into the Papal state in 1429, Pope Martin V tried to develop Ancona as an Italian centre of commerce. In order to achieve that goal, the Jews were given permission to open banks and lend money with interest, which attracted immigrants from Germany, Spain, Sicily and Portugal. By 1550 the Jewish population of Ancona numbered about 2,700 individuals. The Ketubah is a nuptial agreement signed by the groom and presented to the bride as part of the traditional Jewish wedding ceremony. It formalises the duties and responsibilities of the groom towards the bride, including some basic obligations such as sustenance (food and clothing), marital relations and compensation in the event of divorce. The Ketubah is read aloud during the wedding ceremony, signed by two witnesses and usually handed to the mother of the bride for safekeeping. Ketubot are often hung in the home of the couple, as a reminder of their vows and mutual marital responsibilities. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

      - [Edo 1822-1834, Suharaya]. Brown stitched wrs., very good, 36 volumes main text + 9 volumes supplement, entirely wood- block printed on hand-made paper, Illustrated with prints of medicinal plants & phamamcopeia, title slips. R A R E The complete set in 45 volumes. Some minor rubbing to the corners, edges, most title slips intact, numbered 1-36; the supplement 1-9, ca. 18 x 26 cm. This work outlined hundreds of useful plants and how to utilize them for medicine. * The book is important in its translation of technical terms from Dutch into Japanese." Therefore its apparent to this cataloger that the Udagawa author is one and the same person with an error in reading his given name. There are also some fascinatingillustrations from the Dutch that show experiments using glass beakers and some are connected to each other in a chemical process. There are also many pages of plant illustrations, each named. * WHO WAS UDAGAWA: Udagawa was distinguished by making and publishing Japan's first copper-etched anatomical atlas NAISHOO DOOHAN ZU in 1808. See G. Mestler pp.315-317 for details on this most important and famous of all Japanese medical works. Another entry on Mestler p.325 cites this current work. Udagawa was a successful physician and also a Rangaku-sha [Scholar of Dutch learning] who authored many important medical works in Japanese either inspired by or translated from from period Dutch medical resources. The current book is his 'Sui Generis' of his medical botanicals. A great set, with supplement, illustrates hundreds of plants and examples for prescription of medicine. * CONDITION: Seldom found complete if at all, an excellent example, minor light marginal stain on a few else quite clean. A fine resource and fascinating reference source. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: G. Mestler: INTRODUCTION TO WESTERN INFLUENCES IN PRE-MEIJI JAPANESE MEDICINE. * G. Mestler: A GALAXY OF OLD JAPANESE MEDICAL BOOKS, pp.315-317. * H. Bartlett: JAPANESE BOTANY DURING THE PERIOD OF WOOD-BLOCK PRINTING. This work is strangely not listed in Bartlett, but a very close relative is cited on p.549. He lists: UDAGAWA Yuan: SHOKUGAKU KEIGEN. RIGAKU NYUUMON: INTRODUCTORY STUDY OF BOTANY, [1833] which is a text showing the beginning of Western influence of illustrations of exotic plants copied from European books and the early use of Latin nomenclature, the appearance of Dutch or Malay common terms, see exhibit 111 & fig.102. One could easily speculate, that ENSEI IHO was actually written by Udagawa [one in the same] as was SHOKUGAKU KEIGEN. Bartlett states: ".the author is notable for his pioneering efforts in introducing European science & modes of instruction. A very closely related item to our copy. * Not listed in E. Merrill: A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF EASTERN ASIATIC BOTANY. * W. Whitney in his: NOTES ON THE HISTORY OF MEDICAL PROGRESS IN JAPAN. He cites Udagawa's given name as Yoan or Genshin [aka Shinsai]. Its apparent that a student of Dutch learning has renamed himself to be Joan or Yoan is a Japanese corruption of John or as pronounced in Dutch as Yo[h]an. Whitney cites several entries for information about him, as well as five of his books. All of which are of a botanical nature, covering materia medica and pharmacopoeia. * Please inquire with us as we may have a copies of the above bibliographies in stock for sale. * Scans can be sent by e-mail

18, n°1, p. 98-122. (Einaudi, 5129. Goldsmiths, 23443. Kress, C.967). Très bon exemplaire, très bien relié.         The History of England; from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688...[and] from the Revolution in 1688 to the Death of George II.

London: J.F. Dove, 1822. Octavo, 13 volumes. Bound in contemporary red straight grain morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, all edges gilt. Illustrated with numerous steel-engraved portrait plates throughout. An attractive and profusely illustrated set, of which the first eight volumes are by Hume, with Smollett contributing the final five. The History of England is David Hume's great work on the history of England, which he wrote in installments while he was librarian to the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh. It was published in six volumes in 1754, 1756, 1759, and 1761. The first publication of his History was greeted with outrage by all political factions, but it became a best-seller, finally giving him the financial independence he had long sought. Both the British Library and the Cambridge University Library, as well as Hume's own library, still list him as "David Hume, the historian." Hume's History spanned "from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688" and went through over 100 editions. Many considered it the standard history of England in its day.

Edition Originale. Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica.

Glasgow: Andreae et Joannis M. Duncan. 1822. 4to. 4 vols bound in 2. Contemporary full brown calf, boards with gilt double fillet panels and acanthus and shell-motif blind rolls to borders, spines with gilt panels and red morocco gilt lettering pieces, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled; [4] + [vii]-xxx+ [2] + 431 + [1], [6] + 320, [4] + xxxvi + 344, [2] + vi + 202 + [2]; spines slightly sunned, occasional mild offsetting and foxing, one leaf with lower outer corner torn, otherwise very good in a handsome binding. Provenance: both volumes with inscription of James Gallichan, St John's College, Cambridge, to front flyleaf. Gallichan became the Chaplain of the Gaol, Poor House and Hospital in Jersey and died in 1859. First Glasgow printing of the 1739 Geneva "Jesuit" edition, so-called despite the non-participation of Jesuits; the two editors were Minim monks. This was a hugely influential reprint of the third edition of 1726, with commentary by the editors and Jean-Louis Calandrini, professor of mathematics and philosophy at the University of Geneva. This edition of the Principia became the most extensively used because of the brilliance of the notes, which are almost the same length as Newton's text and employ Leibnizian calculus, and ran through two more printings in 1760 and 1822. Brunet describes the Glasgow printing as particularly "belle et soignee, avec les figures inserees dans le texte". Babson 32; Brunet IV, 49.
