The Shipwreck

London - JohnSharpe, 1822. London - JohnSharpe, 1822 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An epic poem telling the final voyage of the merchant ship Britannia and her crew. In the original very decorative Regency binding. Includes numerous engravings throughout. William Falconer (bap. 1732, d. 1770), poet and lexicographer, was baptized in Edinburgh on 11 February 1732, which was possibly also the day of his birth. Nothing is known of Falconer's childhood except that he had some rudimentary schooling under one Webster before he went to sea as an apprentice, probably in the coal trade from Northumberland to London, about which he makes knowledgeable references in his poetry. Evidence for Falconer's seafaring life is to be adduced from his long poem The Shipwreck, which he claims to be autobiographical. If so, by 1749 he had completed his apprenticeship and had joined a British merchant ship in the Levant trade at Alexandria as second mate. The ship, homeward bound via Venice, was driven off course by a furious gale and was wrecked at Sunium in Greece. Falconer was one of three survivors. In 1751 he was in Edinburgh for his first publication, an ode on the death of Frederick, prince of Wales. His life for the next decade is obscure. He was almost certainly at sea in merchant ships, and there is evidence from The Shipwreck that he also served in the Royal Navy and may have been in Hawke's fleet at Quiberon Bay (November 1759). A surviving logbook records that in 1760 he was serving as mate on the Vestal frigate in the north Atlantic trade. DNBCondition: In an attractive calf-leather binding with gilt decoration. Externally generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with onlysome mild spotting to the first and last few pages and the plates due to the paper used. Copperplate ink inscription to thefront endpaper. . . Ferguson I, 854, 891 u. 892. - Schweizer Postkonto vorhanden. **

        The Life of Samuel Johnson

London - T. Cadell, F. C. and J. Rivington, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown etc., 1822. London - T. Cadell, F. C. and J. Rivington, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown etc., 1822 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. James Boswell's influential biography of Samuel Johnson. Complete in four volumes. The ninth edition, revised and augmented. The Life of Samuel Johnson is regarded as an important stage in the development of the modern genre of biography; many have claimed it as the greatest biography written in English. While Boswell's personal acquaintance with his subject only began in 1763, when Johnson was 54 years old, Boswell covered the entirety of Johnson's life by means of additional research. The biography takes many critical liberties with Johnson's life, as Boswell makes various changes to Johnson's quotations and even censors many comments. Regardless of these actions, modern biographers have found Boswell's biography as an important source of information. The work was popular among early audiences and with modern critics. With a portrait of Johnson to the frontispiece of volume I. Including two fold-out plates. Bookplate of Sir Baldwin Leighton to front pastedowns and his inscriptions to front blanks, dated 1825. Condition: In calf bindings. Externally, sound with wear to extremities and cracking to two rear joints. Only a small part of one leather spine label remains. However these could readily replaced at reasonable cost. Internally, firmly bound, bright with occasional foxing, especially to plates and first and last pages. Overall: GOOD.

View of the State of Europe During the Middle Ages. In three volumes

London - John Murray, 1822. London - John Murray, 1822 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Henry Hallam's brilliant examination of Medieval Europe. Third Edition, revised and corrected. Complete in three volumes. Henry Hallam (9 July 1777 21 January 1859) was an English historian. Hallam's earliest literary work was undertaken in connection with the Whig periodical, the Edinburgh Review, where his review of Walter Scott's Dryden attracted attention. His first major work, The View of the State of Europe during the Middle Ages, was produced in 1818, and was followed nine years later by the Constitutional History of England. In 18381839 appeared the Introduction to the Literature of Europe in the 15th, 16th and 17th Centuries. A volume of supplemental notes to his Middle Ages was published in 1843; these facts and dates represent nearly all of Hallam's career. Hallam's View of the State of Europe during the Middle Ages (2 vols. , 1818) surveyed the political development of the principal west European countries, paying particular attention to England's Anglo-Saxon and Norman constitutions. Though Hallam's reputation rests on his work as a historian, he made other contributions to Victorian intellectual life. Given the breadth of his interests, he was an obvious participant in the learned societies and literary clubs of the day. He became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1801, and held the office of vice-president from 1824 to 1851; he was also elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1821. He helped found London University, and sat on its council from 1828 to 1831, as well as being a founder member of the Statistical Society, and serving as its treasurer from 1834 to 1840. During the 1830s he also worked with the sixth record commission, appointed in 1831 to organize the national records, and he assisted the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, an organization dedicated to popular education. DNBCondition: In full calf bindings. Externally generally sound although rubbed with one cracked joint, backstrip of volume III coming slightly away, some marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with light scattered spotting, heavier to the first and last few pages. Overall: GOOD.

        Les Martyrs Ou Le Triomphe

Paris - Chez La Normant, 1822. Paris - Chez La Normant, 1822 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Franois-Ren, vicomte de Chateaubriand (4 September 1768 4 July 1848) was a French writer, politician, diplomat and historian. He is considered the founder of Romanticism in French literature. His descriptions of Nature and his analysis of emotion made him the model for a generation of Romantic writers, not only in France but also abroad. The notes Chateaubriand made on his travels would later form part of a prose epic, Les Martyrs, set during the Roman persecution of early Christianity. His notes also furnished a running account of the trip itself, published in 1811 as the Itinraire de Paris Jrusalem (Itinerary from Paris to Jerusalem). The Spanish stage of the journey would inspire a third novella, Les aventures du dernier Abencrage (The Adventures of the Last Abencerrage), which appeared in 1826. Includes an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Includes Volume I and II of a two volume set. Fourth Edition. In French. Condition: In a gilt and blind stamped cloth binding. Bracebridge Hall, or, The Humorists

London - John Murray, 1822. London - John Murray, 1822 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A copy of this classic collection of intertwining stories by American novelist Washington Irving. Bracebridge Hall, or The Humorists, A Medley was written 1821, while he lived in England, and published in 1822. This episodic novel was originally published under his pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon. As this is a location-based series of character sketches, there are a number of individual plots. The tales centre on the occupants of an English manor (based on Aston Hall, near Birmingham, England, which was occupied by members of the Bracebridge family and which Irving visited). Each chapter documents the story of a different character. BAL suggests that all copies issued by Murray under the date 1822 be considered with equal primacy until evidence is provided to the contrary. First Englishedition, with 404pp. in volume two. Condition: Rebacked in calf with original boards. Externally sound, though with some wear to the extremities and a few marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and mainly clean, with just the odd spot. Overall: GOOD with a VERY GOOD interior..

Historical Romances and Novels and Tales

      - Edinburgh - Archibald Constable and Co, 1822. - Edinburgh - Archibald Constable and Co, 1822 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Various volumes of Walter Scott's novels. With charming vignette titles. Five volumes of Historical Romances: volume II Ivanhoe, volume III The Monastery, volume V The Abbot, volume VI The Abbot, volume VII Kenilworth. Thirteen volumes of Novels and Tales: volume I Waverly, volume II Waverly, volume III Guy Mannering, volume IV Guy Mannering, volume V The Antiquary, volume VI The Antiquary, volume VIII Rob Roy, volume IX Black Dwarf, volume X Old Mortality, volume XI Old Mortality, volume XIV Heart of Mid-Lothian, volume XV Bride of Lammermuir, volume XVI Montrose. Archibald Constable (17741827). Walter Scott was initially one of Constable's customers in the business of scarce antiquarian books. It was the establishment of the Edinburgh Review in 1802 that made Constable a publisher who mattered. If the Review changed Constable into one of the most important publishers of the age, his association with Scott was intended to make him the most successful. Walter Scott was already established as the best-selling author of the day. Scott's Waverley saved Constable's floundering publishing business. Scott granted what was effectively a licence to publish an edition of 1000 copies of Waverley in return for receiving half profits. From this the publisher took half (and had to meet the costs of distribution and overheads from it), and paid the author half. By 1819 11,500 three-volume sets of Waverley had been sold, and the positive contribution to the publisher's income must have approached 3000 from that novel alone. Longer print runs on later novels, and higher prices increased their profitability. The first seven Waverley novels must have brought Archibald Constable & Co. over 20,000 by 1820. Scott well knew the value of his literary property, and he knew the power given to him by the wealth his novels generated. But he did not use this power to increase his share of the income. Constable needed Scott because Scott was the most successful writer of the age, and Constable promoted Scott by advertising heavily, and by keeping him in the public eye. Scott needed Constable because Constable was better at selling books than anyone else. The three great projects of Constable's first twenty years as a publisher were the Edinburgh Review, the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and Walter Scott. DNBCondition: In half leather bindings with marbled boards. Externally worn. One backstrip is missing, two arecoming away, and othershave significant loss. NEGRO PLOT. AN ACCOUNT OF THE LATE INTENDED INSURRECTION AMONG A PORTION OF THE BLACKS OF THE CITY OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

Boston: Printed and published by Joseph W. Ingraham, 1822.. Boston: Printed and published by Joseph W. Ingraham, 1822.. 50pp. Modern three-quarter morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Head of spine with near repair. Evenly tanned, spotting throughout. Very good. First and only northern edition (denoted "second edition" on the titlepage) of the primary contemporary account of the 1822 slave uprising in Charleston, South Carolina, written by James Hamilton, the Intendant (Mayor) of Charleston. This Boston edition was published the same year as the Charleston first edition, which was followed by two more Charleston editions in 1822. All are scarce. The demand for this text in Charleston is obvious, the fact that this edition was printed in far-away (abolitionist) Massachusetts is curious. Perhaps the harsh attitude evinced by the white South Carolinians in the text was meant to further stoke anti-slavery passions in the north, or perhaps the intention was to reinforce the threat of a bloodthirsty slave population. Led by Denmark Vesey, a former slave who had fought for his freedom, the planned uprising was exposed by one of the conspirators before it even began. Vesey and thirty- four other African-Americans were convicted of conspiracy to seize the city of Charleston and executed. Several others who were arrested and were found guilty were imprisoned or sent out of the state, while some were found not guilty and returned to their owners. The first thirty-two pages give a narrative how the plot was uncovered and an account of the trials. The appendix includes summaries of testimony, confessions, a table of the defendants, and the sentence of defendant Jack Pritchard, also known as "Gullah Jack." Vesey receives the lion's share of the blame in the conspiracy, driven by "a malignant hatred of whites, and inordinate lust of power and booty," though the leaders of the local African Methodist Church (several of the insurrectionists came from their ranks) also receive some blame. In a note "to the public" at the start of the text, Hamilton writes that he has, at the request Charleston City Council, brought together all the evidence of the plot and the account of its aftermath to show that "there can be no harm in the salutary inculcation of one lesson, among a certain [i.e. slave] portion of population, that there is nothing they are bad enough to do, that we are not powerful enough to punish." The Vesey uprising and the Nat Turner rebellion in Virginia in 1831 terrified white southerners, especially slaveowners, and led to more repressive treatment of slaves. SABIN 12032, 30013. The Pirate Fight (The Action of 9 November 1822)

The National Intelligencer, Washington, D.C. 1822 - A complete four-page newspaper of 5 December 1822 recounts the battle between the American Schooner USS Alligator, commanded by Lieutenant William Allen, of the West Indies Squadron and three pirate ships, probably commanded by Diabolito, off the coast of Cuba on 9 November 1822. It occupies over 18" of front page column space and has a large, capitalized headline. The paper reports details of the encounter. At the time of battle, the pirate force had in its possesion five US merchant vessels. The Alligator, although out-gunned and out-manned, had an experienced crew, which had recently captured another ship after a bloody battle, and commander; Allen had also commanded the USS Argus when it engaged the HMS Pelican during the War of 1812. Allen and his crew manned launches from the Alligator in an attempt to board the principal pirate vessel, the Revenge, which fired upon the Americans with grape and roundshout. Rather than attempt to fight off the boarding attempt, the pirates abandoned the Revenge and fled to their other two ships. As Allen turned his boats to continue the attack, they came under withering fire from the pirates. In an attempt to rally his men, Allen stood up and was cut down by musket fire. The two remaining pirate ships fled the battle during the resulting confusing, leaving the Revenge and the five merchant ships the Alligator. Allen became an immediate naval hero, and his name was used as a rallying cry a year later when the navy defeated another pirate force and killed Diabolito in the same area The paper is toned but supple; generally clean with some staining at the upper right. The spine appears to have been neatly mended. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall [Attributes: Soft Cover]
