Hardcover, handsomely bound in modern quarter cloth, spines with matching decorative labels, gilt; entirely untrimmed, partly unopened; occasionally light sporadic foxing. In fine condition. A most attractive set. ~ Daniel Neal (1678-1743), English historian, minister, and Nonconformist divine, was educated at the Merchant Taylors School, and at the universities of Utrecht and Leiden. In 1704 he became assistant minister, and in 1706 sole minister, of an independent congregation worshipping in Aldersgate Street, and afterwards in Jewin Street, London, where he remained almost until his death. In 1720 he published his ?History of New England?, which obtained for its author the honorary degree of M.A. from Harvard college. He also undertook to assist Dr. John Evans in writing a history of Nonconformity. Evans, however, died in 1730, and, making use of his papers for the period before 1640, Neal wrote the whole of the work himself. This ?History of the Puritans? deals with the time between the Reformation and 1689. The first volume appeared in 1732, and the fourth and last in 1738. ?The History of the Puritans? was edited, in five volumes, by Dr Joshua Toulmin (1740-1815), who added a life of Neal in 1797. This was reprinted in 1822, and an edition in two volumes was published in New York in 1844. With the small oval stamp of New College London.

In fine condition. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION. In the chaos surrounding Brazilian independence, the author, who describes himself as "Tenente Coronel, e Commandante do 2º regimento de milicias da mesma villa" (Caxias, in Maranhão) describes how his superior there abused his power by meting out punishments not ordained by law. "Como he possivel a Regeneração do Brazil, cuja sorte está entregue a similhantes homens para quem os successos de Portugal de 1821 não merecem mais conceito, nem mais elogios, do que os successos de Pernambuco de 1817, que elles tratão por borracheira!!!" (The author's impassioned footnotes include no fewer than 20 exclamation points and 14 indignant question marks on pp. 12-13 alone.)---- Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 567-8. JCB, @Portuguese and Brazilian Books, 822/35. Not in Innocêncio. NUC: RPJCB. OCLC: 83556196. Porbase locates two copies, both in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal.       Parisiis: Apud Lefevre Bibliopolam, 1822. n. Hardcover. Unusually Delicate and Fine for Such Small Paintings. 108 x 76 mm (4 1/4 x 3"). Two volumes. Edited by Jean-Augustin Amar. Charming contemporary green straight-grain morocco, covers panelled with fine gilt and blind rolls, raised bands, spine compartments outlined in blind and with pretty quatrefoil gilt centerpiece ornament, gilt titling, turn-ins with decorative gilt roll, all edges gilt. EACH VOLUME WITH A LOVELY PASTORAL FORE-EDGE PAINTING, one depicting Fetherstone Castle, Northumberland, the other Lowther Castle, Westmoreland. In later green cloth chemises and a quarter morocco slipcase, its spine decorated in much the same fashion as the volumes. Front pastedown of both volumes with the armorial bookplate of Sir James Stuart, Bart.; front free endpaper of both volumes with the oval morocco bookplate of R. B. Adam; front free endpaper of first volume with the oval morocco bookplate of Mary Lecomte du Nouy. Brunet III, 1201; Graesse IV, 274. Joints just slightly rubbed, spines faintly and uniformly darkened, a touch of browning to edges of leaves, intermittent light foxing, otherwise a fine set, the text generally clean and fresh, the bindings lustrous, and the fore-edge paintings particularly well preserved, with rich colors. These lovely little volumes stand out on multiple levels. The book was finely printed by Pierre Didot of the renowned French firm; the delicacy and intricacy of the binding decoration is notable (partly because of the small size of the volumes); and the fore-edge paintings--which seem to be early, perhaps even from the time of publication--are particularly well executed. Characterized by serene bovinity, our two paintings each feature a massive castle in the background, trees sufficient to frame the scene, and just enough action (involving two gentlemen and their dogs in the Westmoreland painting) to diminish lassitude without extinguishing tranquility. The artist has exhibited impressive deftness in creating convincing natural and human elements, and the notable level of aesthetic achievement here is emphasized by the diminutive area that these scenes occupy: one just doesn't often see such excellent paintings on such small books. Lucan, the Spanish born nephew of Seneca, was famous for his precocious literary achievements, but all that has come down to us is his "Pharsalia," the last of his poems, published after his death. This epic, the greatest in Latin other than the "Aeneid," chronicles the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, whose forces were defeated at the battle of Pharsalia. Our volume has very distinguished provenance. It was once owned by Sir James Stuart (1780-1853), an English lawyer and bibliophile who served as Chief Justice of Lower Canada. (It is listed on p. 121 of the catalogue of his library published in 1987.) Robert B. Adam (1863-1940), a member of the inner circle of bibliophiles that included Jerome Kern, Chauncey Brewster Tinker, and A. Edward Newton, assembled what was considered to be the finest collection in America of material relating to Samuel Johnson; a catalogue of his collection was published by Oxford University Press in four volumes in 1929. And Mary Harriman Lecomte du Nouy (d. 1974) was the American wife of French biophysicist and philosopher Pierre Lecomte du Nouy, with whom she shared a zeal for book collecting.

Color Plate] Chrysal, or, The adventures of a guinea: wherein are exhibited views of several striking scenes : with interesting anecdotes of the most noted persons in every rank of life through whose hands it has passed, by an Adept [12 hand-colored plates]

Printed for Samuel Richards and Co. 3, Grocers'-Hall Court, Poultry; and T. Mason & Sons, 2, Great Russel Street, Bloomsbury, London 1822 - Complete in three volumes. 12mo; viii, 319; 321; 326pp, plus 12 hand-colored plates engraved variously by Maddocks, E. F. Burney, and W. Read. Uniformly rebound to style by Fitterer, with period marbled paper-covered boards and modern paper labels; top edges gilt; end papers renewed with laid paper. Binding pristine; some gatherings foxed in volume I, otherwise a very good or better set with only sporadic foxing and offsetting from the plates, which are generally fresh and bright. Originally published pseudonymously in 1760 in 2 vols., then in an octavo color-plate edition, "To which is now prefixed a sketch of the author's life" (spelled here Johnston or Johnson; elsewhere Johnstone) in 1822, which Tooley (no. 283) calls the "best edition" of the "best scandalous chronicle of the day." OCLC Number: 187449866. This, Johnston's chief work, "appeared in four volumes between 1760 and 1765. The first and second volumes were written during a visit to the earl of Mount-Edgcumbe in Devon and had already gone through three editions before Johnstone was prevailed on to write the last two volumes, and the whole work was frequently reprinted during the eighteenth century (and translated into French). An excoriating satire that won Johnstone respect as a wit but few friends, the novel is set roughly during the period of the Seven Years' War (1757–63) and pretends to reveal political secrets, and to expose the private profligacy of many of the well-known—and highly colourful—public characters of the time."
