Large Paper Copies are obviously larger in format (14.5 x 10.25 inches) and have other differences from the small paper copies: 1. many of the plates are printed on separate sheets of paper and are mounted in the large paper copies; 2. has a number of the plates printed horizontal on the page rather than vertically as the larger page size allowed that. Savage was a printer known for his superb craftsmanship and certainly demonstrated that ability in producing this book. Many of the plates are in the most stunning color, especially noted are the title and dedication pages. Contains chapters on the history of printing, printing materials, press work, printing in colors and 10 sections in the appendix devoted to different aspects of the printing industry as it stood in 1822. Only 227 copies were subscribed for from a projected edition of 325 copies. Some of the plates required as many as 29 block to produce the final color printed version. With such legendary figures as Ackermann, John Bell, Thomas Bewick, W. Bulmer, Henry Caslon, George Cruikshank, Allen Dalziel, and T.F. Dibdin listed as subscribers. In a signed binding by Clarke & Bedford elaborately tooled in gilt (Ramsden, London Bookbinders 1760-1840 pp. 50). John Clarke was a highly skilled and prolific binder who joined Francis Bedford in 1841 and worked with hiim until 1859.         The Complete Angler, or Contemplative Man's Recreation ?

London: Printed for James Smith, 163, Strand, 1822. Smith edition. 15 engraved plates. Pp. [i]-lx, [1]-388 pp. Printed by W. Lewis, Finch Lane. 1 vols. 8vo. Bound in full black polished calf by Thomas Gosden, the front cover with a portrait of Isaak Walton in the top panel and "The Greeting" in the lower panel in blind, back cover with portrait of Charles Cotton in top panel, with view of "Boat House" in lower panel also in blind, the whole surrounded by emblematic tooling in blind with gilt roll borders, spine stamped in gilt, a.e.g. Rubbed, with loss of detail on boards, joints and spine ends rubbed. Good. Smith edition. 15 engraved plates. Pp. [i]-lx, [1]-388 pp. Printed by W. Lewis, Finch Lane. 1 vols. 8vo. This is sometimes called the Gosden edition because it was believed to have been published at the expense of the famous sporting bookbinder, due to the Gosden imprint on most of the plates. This copy is closest in size to Coigney's copy e; the binding serves as an example of Gosden's art but the rubbing has softened the detail in the tooling that characterizes his work; the portrait of Cotton shows sharper detail.

By Jean-Pierre (Abel) Remusat. xxxii, 214, [2] pp. Illustrated with 2 folding plates and innumerable Chinese characters executed in woodcut throughout. 8vo., 230 x 155 mm, bound in contemporary calf with the front wrapper, printed on yellow paper, bound in. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1822. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition, a fine copy of this early Chinese grammar book which features both Literary Chinese and Mandarin. It was a major achievement of Chinese philology in the early nineteenth century, as well as being one of the earliest successful books with movable Chinese and Roman types. The folding lithograph plates were executed by Charles Philibert de Lasteyrie de Saillant. Rémusat (1788-1832), along with Julius Klaproth, is recognized as one of the founders of modern Oriental scholarship in the West. In 1811 he produced an Essai sur la langue de la literature chinoise, and a paper on foreign languages among the Chinese, which procured him the patronage of Silvestre de Sacy. In 1814 a chair of Chinese was founded at the College de France for Rémusat. From this time he gave himself wholly to the languages of the Far East, and published a series of classic works, among which his contributions from Chinese sources to the history of the Tatar nations claim special notice. Rémusat became an editor of the Journal de Savants in 1818, and founder and first secretary of the Paris Asiatic Society in 1822. Between 1821 and 1831, Rémusat's heated scholarly correspondance with Wilhelm von Humbolt on the Chinese language is well documented in Lettres édifiantes et curieuses sur la langue chinoise: Un débat philosophico-grammatical (1999). Lust 1027. Brunet IV, 1216. See Walravens, China Illustrata p. 269. Not in Cordier.

Segrare i Derby & Oaks [Winners at the Derby & Oaks].[England and/or Sweden], ca. 1835?-ca. 1855. 4to (24.5 x 18 cm). 36 pencil drawings of English thoroughbred race horses (7.5 x 11.5 to 11 x 16 cm), 1 finished in ink washes and a few touched up with white or light brown. Each drawing mounted on (or occasionally drawn on) a card, loose in a Swedish blind-blocked, textured red cloth portfolio (ca. 1860?), title in gold on front board, decorated endpapers, red cloth ties.

A collection of 36 pencil drawings of famous English thoroughbred race horses by at least three artists, including one signed "Harry Hall" and several others clearly based directly or indirectly on his paintings. Some horses appear in their stables or grounds, sometimes with a stable boy, groom or owner, others are shown carrying a jockey during a race at a track. The earliest horses shown include a beautiful pencil and ink-wash drawing of Camel (1822-1844), who raced from 1825 to 1827 and won the 1826 Port Stakes at Newmarket. He is better known as the sire of Touchstone (1831-1861), also shown, one of the most famous thoroughbreds of all time, who raced from 1833 to 1837. In very good condition, with only some minor wrinkles in one drawing and faint stains in another. Portfolio good. A charming collection of horse drawings, mostly from the early 1850s.

Original Theatrical Observer - First Irish Review & Playbill Collection ! 1821

J.J. NOLAN, DUBLIN - 4, SUFFOLK-STREET 1822 - In most of the antiquarian theatrical observers, the theatres are named at the top of each of the playbills, this was the case for the London theatres. In this book, the theatres are not named on the playbills, so I had to do some research before I could say with any confidence which theatre these reviews and playbills related to. The book was published in Dublin, Ireland. It seems that during 1821 and 1822, the time period for this book, there was only one theatre in Dublin that was in existence. - Here is a short history of my findings: The first Theatre Royal was opened by John Ogilby in 1662 in Smock Alley. The theatre was knocked down and rebuilt in 1735 and closed in 1787. - The Second Theatre Royal - In 1820, Henry Harris bought a site in Hawkins Street and built the 2,000 seater Albany New Theatre on it at a cost of £50,000, designed by architect Samuel Beazley. This theatre opened in January of the following year [1821]. In August George IV attended a performance at the Albany and, as a consequence, a patent was granted. The name of the theatre was changed to the "Theatre Royal" to reflect its status as a patent theatre. The building work was not completed at the time of opening and early audience figures were so low that a number of side seating boxes were boarded up. - The first review in this book is dated at: No. 1. Friday, December 21st, 1821. So, this must have been a review written before the theatre was officially opened the following month in January 1821. A bound volume containing [73] individual issues, of the Theatrical observer, which were published between: Friday, 21st December 1821 to Saturday, 16th March 1822. - Complete Volume VIII [8] consists of 37 individual issues. Complete Volume IX [9] consists of 36 individual issues. - This set is actually signed on the first blank endpage, it appears to say 'half bound putum': Half-Bound - (of books) having the back bound in one material and the sides in another. May well have been written/signed by the binder before it went on sale in 1822. CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: Two tone paper boards or [half bound putum] - bind the issues. They are not in a great condition but this is the original binding. Spine is a bit tatty with original newspaper binding below and the text seems to pertain to: 'superstitions, 'abolish all monuments of superstition', Sacrifice, God, the poor and needy', etc, so it appears to be a religious text on the newspaper used under the original binding, and this would have been printed pre: 1822. I have not repaired the binding, so it is still in it's amazing first state. There are a few small paper parts from the rear board binding which are loose but present. The issues are printed on lightweight paper so there is a fair amount of browning and foxing and light soiling. Page edges are roughcut throughout. The frontispiece [unknown creator/illustrator] is loose but present. It states: 'Engraved for Nolan's Theatrical Observer, MR. TALBOT, Monsieur Morbleau, It's a wonderfully, detailed engraving. The earlier issues are 191 years old and issues from the Original Theatrical Observer, are incredibly rare. --- POSTAGE OPTIONS: Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days.       Edinburgh, printed for W. and C. Tait, 1822.FIRST EDITION 1822 translated by JOHN BELLENDEN. 4to, approximately 245 x 180 mm, 9½ x 7¼ inches, pictorial and decorated initials, pages: xii, viii, 479, finely bound in full leather, triple ruled gilt border with corner motifs and small gilt armorial device in centre of covers, raised bands to spine, gilt decoration in compartments, gilt lettering, all edges gilt, double ruled gilt inner dentelles (turn ins), marbled endpapers. Hinges rubbed and darkened, one or two minor marks to covers, couple of light scratches on lower cover, front inner paper hinge cracked, binding tight and firm, armorial bookplate on front pastedown, another small bookplate to front endpaper, endpapers slightly foxed, very small pale brown stain to 2 margins of prelims, intermittent small pale damp mark affects upper inner corner on first 65 pages, otherwise contents very clean and bright. A very good copy in a handsome binding. John Bellenden (flourished 1533 - 1587?) of Moray was a Scottish writer born towards the close of the 15th century, and educated at St. Andrews and Paris. He was requested by James V of Scotland in 1535 to translate Livy's History of Rome into the vernacular language of Scotland but it seems he never proceeded beyond the Fifth Book. He had already at the king's request translated Hector Boece's Historia Gentis Scotorum as Chroniklis of Scotland and this was published in 1536. However apart from 2 short extracts the Livy translation had never been published until this edition of 1822. The Chroniklis and the Livy by John Bellenden remain the earliest existing specimens of Scottish literary prose. According to the Notice at the head of the book, the Livy "contains more of vernacular Scotch than the Chronicles of Scotland, which appear to have been contaminated by Latin phraseology, and perhaps too, by the emendations of a printer accustomed to the language of England".         Autograph musical quotation signed

      - Sivori "studied violin with Paganini's former teacher Giacomo Costa. Between October 1822 and May 1823 Paganini was in Genoa, and, favourably struck by the young violinist, decided to give him lessons. Paganini regarded Sivori as the only pupil for whose formation he was responsible ('the only person who can call himself my pupil', he wrote in 1828). His virtuoso repertory was based principally on his own compositions and those of Paganini, but unlike his teacher, Sivori also became an exceptional performer of Classical and early Romantic chamber music. A stylish composer, who displayed a lovely melodic vein, Sivori composed around 60 pieces." Flavio Menardi Noguera in Grove online 4 measures encompassing the range of the violin, marked "Etendue du Violon," notated on a large oblong octavo leaf (167 x 227 mm.). Inscribed "A mon collègue [!] et bon ami A. Fischer. Camillo Sivori Paris 17 Février 1882." Very slightly foxed; slight abrasion to right-hand edge.

Historikern Nils Henric Sjöborg (1767-1838) blev professor i Lund 1799.

SEVENOAKS [TURNPIKE] TRUST - SPECIFICATION OF THE PARTICULARS OF EXCAVATION AND SUNDRY WORK TO BE PERFORMED NEAR SEVENOAKS KENT. John Millington Civil Engineer and Surveyor 6 Leigh Street, Burton Crescent, London. 4th. Febry 1822.

1822 - Manuscript, tied with tape. Folio. 16.25 x 13 inches. 5 leaves. The plans and sections mentioned in the text have not survived with this document. Originally folded in four, with some griming on title fold. Small tears on right hand edge, not affecting legibility. Some browning and extremities worn but otherwise in fine condition in dark legible script An engineering specification, detailing the excavations and earthworks required to improve the turnpike road in the area of White Hart Hill, where the road from Sevenoaks Town crosses the common in the direction of Tonbridge. This was the southern extremity of the Farnborough to Sevenoaks (Riverhill) turnpike, originally established in 1749, following the passage of the 1748 Act. The Specification has been drawn up by John Millington of London, the engineer appointed by the Trustees, to instruct a contractor who is to commence work in the spring and complete it by 1st August 1822. The contractor is to give financial securities for the performance of the work and is to be paid in instalments, any disputes between the two parties to be resolved by arbitration. The greater part of the Specification is a detailed technical account of the works to be carried out. The works were contiguous to those being carried out at the same time by the Tonbridge Trust which was responsible for the the southwards continuation of the road and it is suggested that the two trusts co-operate on the disposal and reuse of excavated soil. The new line of the road required the lodges and gate of Milton Lombard to be removed and rebuilt, at the Trust's expense, in a new location and his boundary to be planted with 'a quickset hedge consisting of 2 rows of young healthy quicks and to fence the same on the inside with rough split oak posts and rails.' The contractor is 'to find and provide all Labour Carts, Horses, Barrows Planks Screens and Tools of every description' He is also required to protect passing vehicles and cattle, by fencing the excavation and by stationing '2 careful watchmen' at each end of it, to 'be provided with Lanthorns and lights from dusk until day light to direct passengers into the proper track and prevent danger.' A valuable account of the engineering side of turnpike road construction. In spite of this new work in 1822, the line of the road to the south of Sevenoaks continued to cause concern to the Trust and, following two Acts passed in the mid-1830s, it was again planned to realign the road, taking land from Whitehart Farm, in 1852. John Millington (1779-1868) was born at Hammersmith and practised law before turning to civil engineering and being associated with the road-maker, McAdam in his construction work. He was a fellow of the Society of Arts (later Royal) and lectured at the Royal Institution and was briefly appointed to teach engineering at the newly founded University College, London. A dispute over his salary led him to emigrate, firstly to Mexico, where he oversaw silver mining, and later to the USA, where he held the chair of chemistry and natural philosophy at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, 1836-48 and was a professor at the new University of Mississippi, 1848-53.

Bronze medal, 50 mm, extremely fine. Duperrey's Coquille voyage. An excellent example of the very uncommon bronzed copper medal commemorating the first voyage of Duperrey to the Pacific. A similar example of this bronze version is held in the Rex Nan Kivell collection of the National Library of Australia.Duperrey's voyage was one of the greatest of the French grands voyages to the Pacific. The expedition set out from Toulon on 11 August 1822, with the intention of collecting scientific data and specimens, but also instructed to report on the possibility of establishing a penal colony in Western Australia. Duperrey, who was thirty-five at the start of the voyage, had been on the crew of the previous major French Pacific voyage, that of Freycinet. He had as his second-in-command Dumont d'Urville, who was to become the most experienced French commander in the Pacific. While science led the expedition, there was also an unspoken goal of discovering where France might carve out an empire in the South Pacific. His voyage was of some 73,000 miles, with major destinations including Australia, New Zealand, and New Guinea.By far the greatest contributions of the expedition were scientific, cartographic and ethnographic, and the Duperrey voyage account is a famously sumptuous production, with exquisite coloured plates.

Folio, with lithograph frontispiece portrait of Count Romanzoff, 104 hand coloured lithograph plates, folding map of the voyage and two plans (on one sheet); with text in 12 separately paged sections and with plates also separately numbered; original crimson morocco spine and corners, crimson glazed paper boards, title in gilt on spine; occasional foxing to text leaves as in nearly all copies, some browning to a few plates. The most beautiful colour plate book of the North and Central Pacific. A superb copy of this amazing book, "a spectacular and early lithographically illustrated travel account that has always been considered one of the most beautiful and important colour plate books of the Northern Pacific. It contains more early coloured views of Hawaii, Alaska and California than any other work of the period..." (Forbes).Choris, a Russian of German stock, was just twenty years old when he was appointed as official draughtsman on the Kotzebue expedition of 1815-1818. During this voyage he produced a vast number of important sketches and watercolours, and on his return to Paris was encouraged to produce this great work, which was first issued in 22 parts between 1820 and 1822. Most of these views did not appear in the official account of the expedition published in Germany and in Russia, and some of the copper engraved plates in the official account were re-lithographed to suit the artist. Overall, this publication reflects Choris' personal interests and preferences. It has a rich and exotic point of view not seen in any other voyage book. Over the years copies of this wonderful book have been broken up for sale as separate prints which helps to account for its exceptional modern rarity. This copy contains the Norblin version of the Queen Kaahumanu portrait, the preferred Langlume lithograph of Kamehameha and the first state of the female dancers (Plate XVI) with the plain background. The many beautiful plates include views and scenes of native life, artefacts, plants, shells and animals. Twelve relate to California (including several of San Francisco), nineteen of Hawaii (with the first view of Honolulu), twenty-three of Alaskan interest, and twenty-one of various parts of Micronesia. Lada-Mocarski calls it "one of the very valuable and fundamental works on Alaska, California and the Hawaiian Islands". The list of subscribers, which accounts for only 188 copies, includes the Emperor of Russia, and the King of France. This most attractive copy has the armorial bookplate of the Swiss count Frederic de Pourtales (1779-1861, to whose eldest son, oddly enough, Charles La Trobe served as tutor in the 1820s) and subsequently formed part of the great Carlsmith library in Hawai'i (sold by ourselves in 1985).

The District of Albany formerly t'Zuurenveld, being the eastern frontier of the Colony of the Cape if Good Hope, shewing locations of the settlers lately arrived from England.

1822 - Handcoloured engraved map measuring 605 x 890 mm. (sheet size); lower blank margin chipped (but well outside plate mark), a very good copy. "Fine pasture country, uninhabited and considered as neutral ground" Detailed topographic map of the Albany district (present day South Africa) presenting a wilderness mapped but largely untamed. This map was published by William Faden (1749-1836), one of the more prolific cartographic publishers of the later eighteenth-century who began his trade with Thomas Jefferys. In 1783 Faden was appointed geographer to the king and by 1796 'he assembled an unrivalled stock of large-scale maps of the British counties'. Over the coming two decades Faden served the emerging market for maps of the colonies, of which this chart of the Cape of Good Hope is a good example.A sense of the frontier nature of this country is given in note engraved in a blank section to the northeast corner: 'fine pasture country, uninhabited and considered as neutral ground since to convention with the Caffre chiefs, after the last disturbances in the Year 1819'.
