Colombia: being a geographical, statistical, agricultural, commercial, and political account of that country Miranda's contribution comprising this long political commentary), adapted for the general reader, the merchant , and the colonist

1822 - First edition. 2 vols. 2 engraved portraits & Humboldt's handsome large folding engraved map. 8vo. Original grey papers boards, with modern paper spines retaining the original somewhat rubbed printed labels. Two inch tear to head of title page to the second volume, without loss and not affecting text. cxxiv, 707; vi, 782pp. Baldwin, Cradock & Joy. London, This work is an account of the new minted country of Colombia. ?Bounded on the north, by the province of Costa Rica in Guatimala and the Carribean Sea; on the east by the Atlantic and Dutch Guiana; on the south, by Portuguese Guinea, the river Maranon, and Peru; and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. The eastern portion of this vast region was formerly called Venezuela or Caracas; the western portion, New Granada or Cundinamarca; and the south western extremity of the later Quito.? It is an ambitious piece of promotional literature for even as the author wrote he assumed the rebels' total victory. Battles and skirmishes raged throughout 1822 and it was not until November 10th 1823 that the articles of capitulation were ratified and the royalist troops were allowed to march out of their stonghold in Puerto Cabello. The incomplete history of the Independace movement could be considered a book within a book as it occupys a section of some 405pp in volume 2. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Zt. mit Rückenschildern (2 Bde.) Slg. du Prel 699; Graesse S.45; Ackermann II/234 (zur 2.Aufl. 1826): "Sehr selten und gesucht"; Crabtree 310: "Kieser was a strong supporter of animal magnetism and heavily involved in investigating the clairvoyant qualities of magnetic somnambulists. He called the essential agent of animal magnetism 'telluric power', associating animal magnetism with a generalized force. In this lengthy and important work, he describes mineral, vegetable, and animal magnetism, attempting to provide a foundation in physics for animal magnetic phenomena. Kieser says that sleep is a general expression of magnetic life and that somnambulism is a natural product of the application of animal magnetic techniques. In describing magnetic healing, he places some emphasis on the power of belief as supplementary to the healing power of animal magnetism itself. The second volume contains a history of animal magnetism and a good bibliography". - Dietrich Georg von Kieser (1779-1862), deutscher Mediziner u. Psychiater; u.a.         Manuscript Document on Vellum, Entitled "Taynton Inclosure Award", With Large Colour Map. Land Granted to Wales Politician, George Talbot Rice, 3rd Baron Dynevor.

Taynton in Oxfordshire, 16 May 1822. - Manuscript Enclosure Award on vellum, being a type of land grant approved by the Parliament of England, which doled out parcels of land previously termed "common" and collectively controlled and farmed by everyday citizens, to subsequently be privately owned by wealthy British peers and the like, complete with the original accompanying survey map, hand-drawn on vellum, delineating the new acquisitions of British politician, former MP of Carmarthenshire in Wales, George Talbot Rice, 3rd Baron Dynevor, among others. Medium Folio. 25 pages including the commissioner's manuscript oath, written to rectos only, each page of the document bordered in red ink, docketed by a parliamentary court clerk, and labelling it 'Roll 415.' Accompanied the original large manuscript folding map of the Parish of Taynton, tipped in at the front of the volume, with roadways and rivers hand coloured, measuring approximately 53 x 71 cm. Plan was drawn by Edward Webb of Stow on the Wold, land surveyor, and features a scale bar and decorative compass rose. Full calf binding consisting of the original boards tooled, titled in gilt to front, with two working brass clasps, secured with a recent professionally crafted leather spine tastefully tooled in gilt, with gilt with morocco label. Volume measuring approximately 45 x 33 x 2 cm. Wear to boards, reinforced at hinge, otherwise in very good condition, internally clean and bright, a fascinating and detailed document. Statistically, Oxfordshire was one of the regions most affected by the enclosure movement. Between 1758 and 1882, 190 parliamentary enclosure acts were passed for the county, affecting 51% of its acreage, while 1/3 of parishes changed through no-parliamentary enclosure. The "enclosure" movement was the process by which the common fields, vast shared pastures and scattered tracts of arable land of rural medieval England, were consolidated and distributed to the wealthy and elite - resulting in the demise of the small farmer and the increase of national agricultural trade. The legal documents which recorded the new ownership and delineated the distribution of land - as seen here - were called "Inclosure Awards."

A Tour in Pursuit of Ideas; being a picturesque view of all the Yarmouth public-houses: a humourous and descriptive poem. By Dr. Sigma.

Yarmouth: printed for J. Barnes for the Author; and sold by Cattermole, Beccles ... 1822 A few words, intentionally incomplete in print, completed in contemporary ms. Orig. printed buff wrappers; at some point bound in a larger volume but still a remarkably well preserved copy. In custom made green cloth fold-over case. Not in BL; Oxford only on Copac; no copies on OCLC. A humorous jaunt in verse in homage to the drinking establishments of Great Yarmouth: 'One day as Sigma with his friends was drinking, As mostly is the case the man was thinking; And tipsy folks have notions in their head, By malt and hops, and whiles by wisdom bred ...' The owner of this copy, evidently a resident of Great Yarmouth, has filled in some of the blanks deliberately left by the author:'Here comes the White Hart Coach! see what a load Of passengers, from off the Norwich Road! Speed to the Hart, and to the Coach also, Success to M[arti]n, S[mit]h, and W[arre]n too ... Come, come my cock, and take a glass of wine, M[ac] E[wa]n at the Wrestler's has it fine'. The tour, exploring the public-houses North of New-Street, was intended as the first part of two, the second part, advertised on the final page, was to be a tour of those South of New-Street. It states that 'Part the second; or Dr. Sigma's Southern Tour will be published as soon as one hundred subscribers have entered their names, to indemnify the printing'. There is no record of this being published.

London John Murray 1822 - First edition. 4to., vi, 333pp., 16 lithographed plates, one folding, 2 engraved folding maps, contemporary half calf gilt, an excellent example. Waddington and Hanbury, both Cambridge fellows, decided to embark on an antiquarian tour of Egypt. They were received by the Governor, Mohammed Ali, who gave them permission to travel into Upper Egypt. Dressed as Turks and accompanied by an Irishman, James Curtin, two Maltese, and a setter dog named Anubis, they ascended the Nile as far as Meroe. Whilst there they encountered the American traveller George English, and at Wadi Haifa met the French mineralogist Frederic Cailliaud, both of whom were described in offensive terms by Waddington who had little time for Westerners who appeared to have "turned native."

- 4°, contemporary plain wrappers (spine chipped, corner missing from upper wrapper, remains of contemporary orange wrappers). Woodcut Portuguese royal arms on title page. Woodcut vignette at foot of p. 23. Slight marginal foxing and very slight worming in lower margin, title-page lightly soiled. Overall in good to very good condition. 36 pp. *** First collected edition of this vindication of the actions taken in 1819 by the Conde de Villa Flor as Governor and Captain General of Pará against against Manuel da Costa and others. Villa Flor had attempted to crack down on an illicit trade in diamonds and the accused, in the course of their defense, made counter-accusations against the Governor. The Conde de Villa Flor (1792-1860), later Duke of Terceira and four times Prime Minister of Portugal (1836, 1851, 1842-1846 e 1859-1860), one of the most important Portuguese military and political figures of his time, served early in his career as Governor and Captain General of Pará (1817-1820). Here, by reprinting the relevant official documents, he defends himself against charges that he had unjustly detained and imprisoned a resident of Pará and searched his home for incriminating papers.*** Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 923.         Travels in the interior of Southern Africa.

London Longman -24 1822 - First edition. 2 volumes, 4to., viii, [iv] (verso blank), errata slip, 582, 4 (hints on emigration); iv (errata to verso), 648pp., half-titles to both volumes, folding map, 20 hand-coloured aquatint plates, 5 folding, wood-engravings in text, some offsetting from text to plates in vol. i as usual, contemporary half calf marbled boards, neat repairs to extremities, lightly rubbed, a very good example. "The most valuable and accurate work on South Africa published up to the first quarter of the nineteenth century, and embracing a description of a large part of the Cape Colony and Bechuanaland at this period."(Mendelssohn). Regarding hippopotamus meat: "If our English lovers of good eating could but once taste such a steak, they would not rest till they had caused fine lively hippopotami to be an article of regular importation". A skilled zoologist and botanist, Burchell set out from Cape Town in June 1811 on his travels in Africa, and covered four thousand five hundred miles in the interior, returning to the Cape in April 1815 with natural history specimens and five hundred drawings. Most of his observations describe the landscapes, natives, and Boers of the region, but there are also numerous accounts of hunting lion, rhinoceros, and buffalo.         Harmlose Bemerkungen auf einer Reise über Petersburg, Moskau, Kiew nach Jassy.

Berlin, [Johann Friedrich Starcke] for Schüppelsche Buchhandlung, 1822. Small 8vo. Contemporary Central European half-calf over marbled boards with gilt-stamped red moroco lettering piece on spine; pp. [iv], 248; spine and corners worn; internally very clean and fresh; provenance: contemporary stamp Bibliotheca Sceensis (Romania) on title-verso. Very rare first edition of an entertaining and infoRmative travelogue, written by a teacher, writer and traveler of Greek origin, born in Silesia in 1773, and living for some time in Altona, near Hamburg. Kosmeli wrote several books, all of which are extremely hard to find, with light and satirical undertones reminiscent of Jean Paul's romantic irony, or Heine. This is the account of his journey to Saint Petersburg, Moscow and to Iasi in Romania. Wherever he went Kosmeli observed with sympathy Jewish life, and moving through Russia to the South and Romania, the situation of the Greek minorities.
