COOPER, James Fenimore (1789-1851)
London: Henry Colburn and Co. Public Library, Conduit Street, Hanover Square, 1821. First Edition. First Printing of the author's rare first novel (very rare, as here, in the British edition), complete in three volumes. 12mo: [2],307,[1]; [2],301,[1]; [2],315,[1]pp, vol. III, pp. 139 and 272 misnumbered 189 and 172). Contemporary half leather, marbled paper-covered boards, spines decorated in blind with gilt bands and lettering, blue marbled end papers, bookbinder's ticket on front paste down of vol. I (Hays, Book-Binder, 7. Richmond-street, Derry). An excellent set, with tight bindings (barely scuffed) and generally clean, bright pages. BAL 3825 (oddly, making only passing reference to this edition, although the Standard Novels edition [London, 1839] is given an entry of its own [BAL 3889]). Spiller & Blackburn, p. 18-19. Revision of first New York edition, "made apparently by the proof-reader and not by the author." (Spiller & Blackburn) Cooper wrote Precaution on a dare. Warren Walker (James Fenimore Cooper: An Introduction and Interpretation) records it this way: "In the customary practice of the day he was reading aloud to his wife one evening from a current English novel, but found the story dull. Throwing it aside, he declared, 'I could write a better book than that myself.'" To make good his boast, Cooper wrote Precaution, in imitation of contemporary English domestic novels, such as those of Jane Austen and Amelia Opie. In fact, when the novel appeared anonymously in New York (and later, London), it was credited to an English woman. The publisher, A. T. Goodrich, l … [Click Below for Full Description]

[COMBE, William, imitator; Thomas Rowlandson, imitator]
London / Edinburgh / Glasgow: Matthew Iley, Somerset Street / Bell and Bradfute; W. Blackwood / W. Turnbull, 1821. First Edition. First Edition. Tall 8vo: [4],251,[1]pp, with 20 leaves of hand-colored aquatints by William Read and C. Williams (after, but not by, Rowlandson, as often asserted). Text in verse. Contemporary red straight-grained morocco, covers bordered in blind and in gilt, richly gilt spine in six compartments, gilt turn-ins, red morocco lettering piece gilt, all edges gilt, period plain brown end papers. An excellent example of a handsome production, with marginal stains on paste downs from binder's glue and light offsetting from plates onto opposing pages, otherwise clean, bright, and unmarked. Tooley 433. Abbey, Life, 277. Prideaux, p. 334. Hardie, pp 168, 317. ¶ One of a "host of parodies and spurious imitations" (Hardie) of William Combe's series of Doctor Syntax books, and sometimes attributed to him (as well as to Rowlandson). Some of the incidents depicted are similar to those described in Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, with Samuel Johnson, and it may have been inspired by that book. N. B. DELORT, Joseph
One engraved map of Paris and its outskirts, four engraved plates & 24 folding facsimiles of documents. vi, 322 pp.; 2 p.l., 335 pp. Two vols. 8vo, fine cont. sprinkled sheep (foot of spine of Vol. I with minor defect), gilt borders on covers, flat spines gilt, green morocco lettering pieces on spines, marbled edges. Paris: Picard-Dubois, 1821. First edition and a fine copy of this guide to the outskirts of Paris. Delort (1789-1847), historian, worked in the French Ministry of the Interior. In the preface, Delort explains that he was engaged to explore these areas and record notable places and the stories of celebrated individuals who lived there. Divided into a number of "Voyages," which are then separated by related facsimiles of correspondence and their transcriptions, the book is written in a mix of prose and verse. He describes the lives of important historical figures such as Fouquet, Henri IV, Marie Antoinette, and Voltaire. Particularly interesting are the vivid descriptions of neighborhoods which were suburbs in the 19th century but have since been subsumed by the metropolis. There are lengthy accounts of numerous chateaux, churches and cathedrals, villages, aqueducts, and cemeteries, as well as etymologies and historical information about the outskirts. The map of Paris and its suburbs is exceptionally detailed. The four plates depict various landmarks which Delort encounters on his trips. A fine copy. ❧ N.B.G., Vol. 13, cols. 499-500.

REDOUTÉ, Pierre-Joseph (illustrator) and Jean Jacques ROUSSEAU.
Paris Badouin Frères 1821 - Folio (37.5 x 28 cm.), xi, 159, [1]pp., 65 stipple-engraved plates by Bouquet, Chailly, and other after P. J. Redouté printed in colours and finished by hand, original tissue guards, a little light foxing but plates generally clean, contemporary red half morocco gilt by Duplanil signed at foot of spine, lightly rubbed, a very good copy. Lovely example, in a signed binding, of Redouté's beautifully illustrated publication of letters on botany by the great philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), written in the years 1771 to 1773 and apparently first published in 1782. They first appeared with Redouté's illustrations in 1805, in both a folio and a quarto issue, the latter reissued in 1821 from the original plates. This scarce second edition was printed by Alexandre Baudouin and his brother on heavy wove paper. The book serves largely as a vehicle to display the botanical art of Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) who executed all the paintings or watercolour drawings. They were stipple-engraved and (except for that used as a title-vignette), printed in colour à la poupée and finished by hand. The plates show flowers, fruits, bulbs, leaves, etc. of flowering plants and trees, some showing whole plants and others showing details, sometimes cut away to reveal anatomical details. Cf Dunthorne 252; Great Flower Books, p74; Hunt Redoutéana, 15; Nissen 1688. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
