MACQUARIE, Governor Lachlan.
Sydney: 25 July 1821. Folio; manuscript in ink on vellum, 303 x 390 mm; in fine original condition, with suspended paper seal. A good, early grant by Macquarie as fifth governor, with the signatures of Charles Whelan as witness and Frederick Goulburn as Registrar. Of special interest is the signature of the second witness: Hector Macquarie, the governor's nephew, affectionately known to his uncle as the "Hero Hector". This land grant dates from just after the period when Hector accompanied Macquarie and his wife on their official tour of Tasmania. By this grant Nathan Elliott received seven hundred acres of land in the district of Jarvis, Van Diemens Land, on the Strathallan Creek. The area, which became known as Tea Tree Brush, is to the north of Hobart between Brighton and Richmond. Here Elliott built an important early house, Strathallan, and the grant is today a heritage property at the centre of a working farm. This land grant is on vellum, with a good signature by the governor, and is complete with Macquarie's seal of the colony of New South Wales. When it was issued in 1821, Macquarie had already lost his fight against John Thomas Bigge, the royal commissioner and the man who forced his resignation as governor. History has treated Macquarie more fairly since: the colony can be seen to have enormously prospered under his leadership from 1810 to 1822, and it is now celebrated as the Age of Macquarie and the period when New South Wales found its independent entity. Nathan Elliott arrived as a free immigrant in Van Diemen's Land 11 October 1819 on the David Shaw (his fel … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Jones and Co., , 1821-2. or, the Rambles and Adventures of Bob Talyho, Esq. and His Cousin, the Hon. Tom. Dashall, through the Metropolis; Exhibiting a Living Picture of Fashionable Characters, Manners and Amusements in High and Low Life. By an Amateur. Embellished and Illustrated with a Series of Coloured Prints, Designed and Engraved by Messrs. Heath, Alken, Dighton, Rowlandson, &c. 2 volumes, octavo (280 x 130 mm). Bound around 1900 by Riviere and Son in red crushed morocco, lettered in gilt direct to spines with title, volume number and date, gilt floral decorations to compartments within five raised bands, gilt French fillets to covers, all edges gilt, green endpapers. Red slipcase. Illustrated frontispieces, engraved titles, 30 plates including the two additional plates which are generally present; all hand-coloured. The spine of volume II is incorrectly dated 1824. Pencilled addition to list of illustrations identifying the additional plates. Slipcase slightly rubbed and faded. An excellent set. First edition, third issue of both volumes, with volume II bearing the false "1821" date (actually 1822) on title page. The incorrect 1824 date on Riviere's binding of volume II was due to the book being erroneously identified as the fifth issue. "An imitation of Egan's Life in London. Though not the equal of the latter, it has considerable merit, serves as a foil to its illustrious contemporary and is an interesting and useful guide to the social history of the period" (Tooley).

Anon. [Re: Sir William STRUTH (1763 - 1850)].
Manuscript, brown ink on wove paper (Very Good, some minor remains of former album backing to verso), irregular dimensions (due to protruding title register), maximum: 22.7 x 28 cm (8.75 x 11 inches). - [St. Vincent, W.I.], 1821. A well-executed and highly attractive manuscript view of Prospect Plantation, St. Vincent, presented to Sir William Struth, the estate’s proprietor and subsequently the island’s governor; a unique and historically important graphic artifact from the twilight of slavery in the British West Indies. - This beautifully rendered original pen and ink drawing captures Prospect Plantation, one of St. Vincent’s prime estates, as it appeared in 1821, during the island’s last great sugar boom. The property was owned by Sir William Struth, the former mayor of Bristol and the future Acting Governor of St. Vincent. The view is taken from a perspective looking southwest, from a height above the plantation, which is location on the southernmost tip of St. Vincent. Prospect’s Great House, windmill (for grinding cane) and supply buildings occupy the top of a rise, surrounded by palms, while the cane fields cover the slopes below. The sea beyond features several sailing vessels, while Bequia, the northernmost of the Grenadines, about ten kilometres distant, appears in the background. The anonymous artist, who dedicated the work to Struth in the lower register, was clearly not a professional draftsman, yet managed to create a highly attractive work, in the style of a line engraving. Sir William would certainly have treasured this gift from "an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quite a good copy overall. First Edition (?later issue). OCLC no. 21451812. Göthel p. 347. Zemire und Azor, to a libretto by Johann Jakob Ihlée after Jean François Marmontel's comédie-ballet Zémire et Azor, was first performed in Frankfurt on April 4, 1819."The opera contains some of Spohr's most charming melodic writing and some effective coloratura, influenced, Spohr admitted, by the popularity of Rossini. Zemire und Azor held a small place in the 19th-century German repertory, and individual numbers were frequently performed in the concert hall. The popularity of Zemire's Romanze, 'Rose wie bist du reizend und mild' ('Rose softly blooming') continued into the 20th century. As in Spohr's Faust, but less pervasively, musical motifs are used. Both operas have a supernatural element, but Zemire und Azor is an altogether lighter piece, engaging rather than gripping. It was revived in Kasse … [Click Below for Full Description]

SHERIDAN, RICHARD BRINSLEY
London: J. Murray; James Ridgway; and Thomas Wilkie, 1821. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. This is an especially appealing set of the first collection of Sheridan works, edited by his biographer Thomas Moore, and offered here in the rare original boards. Sheridan (1751-1816) was one of the most intriguing figures in 18th century Britain. After a brilliant career as playwright and theatrical manager at Drury Lane, he entered Parliament in 1780, became Undersecretary of State in 1782, and Secretary of the Treasury the next year. According to Day, "most of his political life was spent in the Whig opposition, where he was the recognized equal of Fox and Burke. Sheridan was an intimate of the Prince of Wales, even composing the love letters dispatched by his royal highness." This set includes his plays "The Rivals," "St. Patrick's Day," "The Duenna," "A Trip to Scarborough," "The Camp," "The Critic," "Pizarro," and (his comic masterpiece) "The School for Scandal." Sheridan's "Verses to the Memory of David Garrick," the great actor and impresario, is also found here. DNB tells us, "Sheridan's wit, his sense of fun, and his mockery of sentimental comedy underpin his depiction of the contrast between appearance and reality. His comic invention exposes folly and hypocrisy through dramatic crises in a timeless way, and this has meant the plays remain alive, not only on stage but in radio and television productions as well." The dramatist died in poverty but was buried, with elaborate ceremony, in Westminster Abbey. Our former owner Robert Bruce Æneas Macleod was the son of Scottish w … [Click Below for Full Description]
